Départ de Bayonne demain pour un nouveau chemin… aujourd’hui c’est la SNCF qui nous balade depuis Lyon

1ère étape St Jean de Luz

C’est dimanche il fait beau beaucoup de monde sur la plage. Dormons à l’accueil pèlerins qui est tout neuf .ambiance cosmopolite et sympathique

2ème étape Pasai doniba

Face au port de San Sebastian où on accède par bateau. Très sympa : le soir seuls les pèlerins de l’albergue sont là

Confort sommaire dans le logis collé à l’église : 🔔 toutes les 1/2 heure 🥴

3ème étape Zaraust grande ville balnéaire où nous avions déjà dormi

Il fait toujours un beau temps frais et le chemin est superbe

4ème Mutriku

Toujours aussi beau

5ème étape Bolivar

Dur dur le chemin

Passons la soirée avec un couple de l’Essone, pas de restaurant : sandwich tortilla au menu

6eme étape quelque part après Guernika

Bonne ambiance à l’albergue 3 pèlerins de Béziers et 2 charentaises

Ambiance festive dans les rues en plein après-midi

A Visit to Guernika - Sobering Reminder of the Slaughter of War

The Spanish Civil War tore the country apart from the bungled coup in 1936 to 1939 when Gen. Francisco Franco’s Republicans secured victory and appointed him as dictator until his death in 1975.

One of the areas that most vehemently opposed Franco was the Basque region and, in April 1937, the city of Guernika (pronounced: gairNEEka) was bombed and destroyed by the Nazi German Luftwaffe’s Condor Legion with help from the Italian air force. The attack destroyed 85% of the homes in the town.

Fascists Helping Fascists.

The news was brought to the world by the journalist George Steer in The Times and inspired the graphic work by Pablo Picasso that shows the chaos and slaughter that was wreaked on this town.

The original massive work in oils by Picasso was done in Paris and is now in Madrid. The mural here is a ceramic tile copy, the same huge size as the painting, that is beautifully displayed; not ostentatious but calmly powerful with space around to take time and contemplate what it says.

We also passed by the Museum of Peace where the square is decorated with graphic photographs of the aftermath of this attack.

“Franco ordered a lie. During four decades of dictatorship, it was denied that Gernika had been bombed and it was said that the town had been burned down by “the reds”.”

The obvious first thought when looking at the total destruction, is to think of Ukraine today; towns simply leveled as acts of terrorism. I think a better comparison is with Syria; where Russia was not involved in the Civil War there, but simply showed up to help Assad, a fellow dictator, stay in power with the same tactics by flattening Aleppo.
