Song I'm listening to: one of my two favorite tracks from the debut album of siraph (who also just put out a new ep i gotta jam), a group formed in part by former members of school food punishment, one of my fav bands. that unexpected break into a salsa vamp 2/3 of the way through always puts a grin on my face lol
Show im watching: aura battler dunbine with a friend (it's uh...extremely uneven and has been more boring than good for awhile), rewatch of the more recent dororo adaptation with a partner (still excellent), and the og 80s urusei yatsura solo off and on (kinda just waiting for the oshii/ito influence to really start showing itself since I'm still early on but it's cute)
Book i'm reading: aberration in the heartland of the real: the secret lives of timothy mcveigh by wendy s. painting. discovered via one of my fav podcasters, sean mctiernan (go listen to sf ultra and support his patreon), and while it's outside my usual wheelhouse I'm about ~100 pages in and finding it v interesting thus far! painting seems to have her head on straight and I admire the skill and clarity with which she navigates the accumulated bullshit surrounding the topic; strikes me as more or less "left" in approach if not necessarily like historical dialectical materialist or what have you
Current obsession: other than my crush (not anyone I know from here so dw lol), I guess making decals in armored core 6? I'm stuck at the end of chapter 1 boss fight against balteus and need to grind for money to buy more parts and create a new build but I've been putting it off lol
tagging @halftype @assaultmystic and @phallomedusa plus anyone else who sees this and wants to participate!

I M,EANT TO SEND YOU AN ASK LAST NIGHTBUT I FELL ASLEEP. AND THEN I WAS GONNA SEND YOU ONE EARLIER BUT THEN I HAD TO GO DO SOMETHING AND FORGOT. I CAN FINALLY FREAKING SEND YOU ONE BUT YOURE IN POST LIMIT HELL SO I GUESS YOU CAN ANSWER THIS LATER BUT TELL ME ABOUT THE BLUE FROG FREAK. DORORO? I DONT HAVE THEIR NAMES DOWN YET. THE DAD ONE
IT HAPPENS. i live *covered in blood* I love Lance Corporal Dororo. Everyday I wake up in a dream that never ends because of my undying love for him. If that’s a problem for you, then you can go to hell. I LOVE Dororo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
hope none of that is too hard to read i had uh, Thoughts. thinking about it this dude is probably like… THE. ultimate favorite character. of all time. he fundamentally altered my brain chemistry and i would do anything in the world for him.
so like, dororos family is super rich. thats literally why he n keroro became friends in the first place, bc they went to the same Military Prep Elementary School and one time keroro went to dororos house and saw that his family was LOADED and that he had all the COOL toys so he immediately went WERE FRIENDS RIGHT? so he could hang out w dororo to play w the cool toys. and dororo had had very few friends in his life before that so he went Yeah of course! and then spent his entire childhood doing pretty much whatever keroro asked so they would stay friends. but anyway, i don’t think his family being rich counts for anything at present, since he’s on earth, and i dont know if he like… has. any money. that is viable on earth. he must get some money somehow since he & koyuki like, have a house and are alive? but she doesn’t seem to have like, a job or anything, and i doubt he steals from the invasion budget so like. i dont know where the money comes from and there can’t be very much of it.
ALSO I OOVE THAT THE BLORBO BLINGUS ASK GAME LETS ME THINK ABT CHARACTERS PLAYING MINECRAFT. I know dororo canonically knows how to use a computer bc i just rewatched the episode where the platoon tries to make their own anime today and he uses a computer to do the coloring digitally but like. Dororo does not know how to use a computer. He first learned about stuff on earth from koyuki who spent half her life in a completely isolated village and only got out after she met him and he hasn’t branched out much since. I don’t know if we ever see him play video games or anything like that. I don’t think he would know how to do that. I think the tiny crappy radio he & koyuki have is the most technology hes comfortable with. “i don’t really like using these computers they freak me out” “Dororo you’re from a society with technology way more advanced than this. which you use.” “yeah well this is different”
Anyhow point is i want to see the keroro platoon play minecraft. Dororo keeps trying to build peaceful little houses with nice farms and they keep getting accidentally blown up or burnt down by everyone else. Tamama is in the caves trying to befriend slimes and when he finds out he can’t he just starts killing them en mass. Everyone goes to check out what Kururu is doing and he’s made one of those fully functional redstone computers, for fun.
ALSO ID ALWAYS CALLED DORORO KOYUKIS DAD BUT I NEVER REALLY REALIZED WOW HE LEGIT DOES ACT LIKE IT HUH. hi welcome home how do you like your new school :) its so sweet… i bet he has like 3 backup plans for attempting to homeschool her if anything happens that keeps her from going to public school. i bet they make lunches together. god, this is sweet, but also really funny to imagine, because he is less than 2 feet tall, and round. i watched an episode today that starts w koyuki coming home and dororo is just on the ground loudly sobbing and shes like oh did you fight with your friends again? and then thinking about friends makes her flashback to her childhood best friend & when she met dororo So Hard that she just falls asleep. while hes still there on the floor loudly crying about how he wonders if keroro even considers him a friend. theyre so funny
ok i guess thats all thanks for coming to my dororo talk <3 This post is so long. Tee hee!

Some Anime recs for beginner? And ANYTHING related to it Pleaseeeeeeeeeee
Hmm. I'll list what comes to mind genre wise.
Slice of life.
1. KIMI TO BOKU
Tumblr media
Kimi to Boku is a relaxing anime about high school boys basically doing normal things I guess? But it was so sweet and cute. Also. Short girl represention 😂😂
2. 3-GATSU NO LION
Tumblr media
This was very heart wrenching and sweet. All the characters are so kind and nice. It's about an orphaned shogi prodigy who basically finds family in 3 poor sisters. It's about found family and friends. And battling with loneliness. Also I love the animation style.
COMEDY
1. THE DAILY LIFE OF HIGH SCHOOL BOYS
Tumblr media
Ok. This had me splits. I watched this when I was in school. And no anime had ever made me laugh so hard. Just high school boys doing silly things. We've probably done some of those things as a kid too.
2. THE DISASTEROUS LIFE OF SAIKI K
Tumblr media
okay this is another gem with wacky characters that you'll love. It's funny in every way possible and it suits my sense of humour.
3. ASOBI ASOBASE
Tumblr media
Real representation of preteen girls. No other words needed. Must watch. (you can watch this on the Yt channel muse Asia for free or just rip it off from gogoanime)
ROMANCE
1. LOVELY COMPLEX
Tumblr media
Tall girl meets short boy. Another gem I discovered in school and rewatched during lockdown. Just a funny and light hearted romance about 2 friends falling in love.
2. HORIMIYA
Tumblr media
I'm an honorary manga reader so I haven't kept up with the anime. But it's my favorite romance manga of all time. So sweet it'll give you cavities.
3. FRUITS BASKET 2001
Tumblr media
okay I specifically mentioned the 2001 version as opposed to the 2019 version cause the older one was the one that Ive seen and loved. The 2019 version just doesn't hit the same.
SHOUNEN
1. KIMETSU NO YAIBA
Tumblr media
MUST WATCH. It's written by a woman so it's obviously pretty damn great. Tanjiro is the best shounen protagonist of all time.
2. DORORO
Tumblr media
This just got me all emotional. I binged watched it in 2 sittings.

FairyTailWzard’s New Annual tradition!
2020’s Top 10 List Part One!
So here’s a list that no one asked for of the top 10 anime series I watched this year. I wanted to put this in no particular order but I figured I might as well.  I’ll also be doing my top 10 fanfics from this year and my top 10 books I read this year so stay tuned for parts 2 and 3!
10.) RWBY
Uuuggghhh I really didn’t wanna put this on here… but I really didn’t watch much this year so I had to I guess :(((
I’m really not liking this right now… if my blog wasn’t sort of popular because of my rwby oneshots I’d consider just dropping the anime all together….
(I’m seriously debating on whether to watch the new season or not)
Honestly, the only thing bringing me back is my unhealthy love for Ozpin, Torchwick, and Ironwood.
Honestly, I’d give this show about a 3 or 4/10…
I used to love it so much but I think the quality of writing is going down and the show is trying to be too many things at once that I’m just losing interest.
9.) My Hero Academia
Why is this so low you may ask? Well, cause I think my main hype coming from this is the manga.
Yes I love the show, the animation studio is freaking amazing and the quality of animation never ceases to amaze me. But I love the manga a bit more.
This will probably jump up in rating around season 5 or 6 but for right now I’ll leave it in the 9th spot :)
8.) Sirius the Jaeger
Oh my GOSH, I want a second season so bad. One of my favorite OC’s I’ve ever made was for this anime (it’s Idris Tana btw) and I actually commissioned artwork for her recently and it’s SO PRETTY.
Anyway getting off-topic, the animation of this show and again with the dark and grittiness of it is what drew me in.
Actually, my late grandma and also my great aunt tagged me in a Facebook post with the trailer when it first came out cause they saw vampires and thought I would like it and that's what got me into this show in the first place.
So thank you grandma and auntie!
But I absolutely adore the soundtrack, the mix of orchestral pieces mixed with the more electro-kinda-vibes is my life (seriously go listen to “The Beginning of the Hunting” it changed my life, as an orchestra and cello geek it made my heart so happy)
7.) Tokyo Ghoul season 1-3
Ok, I’m currently reading the manga after I’ve seen the anime and lemme tell you I wish they didn’t censor the anime so much.
I can’t even find an uncensored version anymore and it makes me so upset.
The darkness and goriness of the manga is what appealed to me in the first place (yes I get weird looks for it, no I will not change my mind)
Kaneki is my CHILD and he CANNOT do any wrong. I don’t care who you are I love him
6.) Ajin: Demi-Human
Uuuggghhh to be honest the anime is kinda meh but my love for the manga is so great I am legally obligated to put this here.
Don’t get me wrong, the animation and soundtrack for this show is phenomenal and I think they got Satou down pat.
But they did dumb down and cut out a lot of interesting scenes. Scenes like how Satou takes down some of his opponents (which I can see why... many American viewers would most likely get offended by it… you manga readers know what scene i mean)
Nagai Kei turns into a bit of a whiny character instead of the smart but exasperated teenager I know and love in the manga is the anime version of Kei going to bite off his own fingers in order to climb a wall into a military base?? Definitely not. Would manga-Kei do that? Well, he already did… so... yes..,
Nakano Kou is still kind of funny but he is so much more fascinating in the manga (his backstory breaks my heart).
5.) Bungou Stray Dogs
Another new one that I was actually recommended by my friend @bright-like-the-sun-00 :) I ended up watching it originally in dub but then went back and rewatched it in sub because I love my children so much.
Chuuya is my bean and I love my OC that I created Charlie Dickens :)
(if you guys could go read her story I’d be eternally grateful).
Anyway!
This show has a fantastic cast in both Japanese and English and the music score is one of my favorites. The characters are so wonderfully hilarious and interesting and fhajxbqbaka I love this show okay??
4.) Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
I actually put this off for YEARS because my oldest step-brother kept saying I should watch it. At this point, I was refusing out of spite cause I’m petty like that. But I finally started watching and-
HOLY-
GUYS
I have never gotten so attached to a character (cough cough Giyuu) so quickly.
I have been listening to Gurenge and Kamado Tanjiro no Uta on repeat for literal weeks now and I still grin like an idiot when listening to them. I also have a potential OC/crossover coming out soon sooooo…. stay tuned??
I also broke my sister cause I showed her a post that said national donut day and had a picture of Rengoku on it… I didn’t understand it until she explained it to me and now I cackle every time I think about it.
3.) Jujutsu Kaisen
@plusultranerd got me into this blame her for the future spamming of your dashboards
GUYS GOJO SATORU IS MY LIFE NO QUESTIONS ASKED
He could literally murder me and I’d thank him. He is the prettiest anime character I have EVER SEEN and I love him so much.
Anyway anime. The show got my attention from the get-go. Itadori is such a fun main character and Megumi is me cause you know dogs.
I think I saw an ad for it and since I have Crunchyroll I figured why not and fell in love with it
AND THE ENDING SONG
BEST ENDING EVER YOU CANNOT CHANGE MY MIND
I put it on sometimes so me and my sister just start jamming out to it and we get the stupidest looks and it is amazing
2.) Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Another anime that I will rewatch over and over again until literally the end of time. Also, another series that I’ve already read/or am reading the manga.
Alphonse Eric is my cinnamon roll you can pry him from my cold dead hands.
I have cold hands and no heart by holy heck my BOY
I actually am buying the special edition hardback manga covers that are coming out and I LOVE THEM
THEY ARE SO PRETTY
Am I talking about the characters or the manga?
My answer is yes
Anyway, all of the characters in this are so wonderfully complex and have motivations and i fall in love with 99% of the characters (except for Shou Tucker, I even like Father actually)
1.)  Death Parade
This has got to be one of my top favorite anime of ALL TIME.
I rewatched it early this year and this is one of the very few anime that will get me to cry and this makes me cry every freaking time.
The music is stunning, the animation is magnificent.
For being based on an animated short film, this has such potential for a second season and such a complex storyline was packed into 12 episodes.
I will forever recommend this anime to literally anyone who is looking for something new to watch.
I’m also noticing I have a thing for white-haired male anime characters with really pretty eyes….. Kaneki… Gojo… Decim...
Honorable mentions!
Darker than Black
I didn’t rewatch the whole thing this year but this anime is literally my life. Hei is such a bean and I love him.
Hunter x Hunter
Another anime i didn't rewatch completely but still adore :) I heard they’re continuing it and I’m excited for the dark continent arc!
Dororo
Technically i watched this late 2019 but whatever; I do what I want. The animation was absolutely gorgeous and I loved the gritty darkness of it. Mio will forever be my favorite character; you cannot change my mind. Some parts I did find a bit boring but overall I’d rate this a solid 6/10!
The Devil is a Part-Timer!
I rewatched parts of it and not the whole thing, I also have the first two volumes of the light novels and I forget how funny it is until I actually watch it. It has me laughing every time and never fails to put a smile on my face :)

Spring 2019 Anime SUPER Short Takes
so yeah i have zero percent energy and time, so these aren’t official reviews or overviews for the anime i watched, just messy general “did i like it” thoughts for each anime. not even telling you the premise! you’ll have to look it up yourself.
Tumblr media
Dororo (end)- There was a lot of pretty interesting and strong stuff leading up to like, the last episode and a half... Hyakkimaru being consumed by obsession and not really being able to articulate why he wanted his body parts back so badly other than “because they’re mine”, his touching reunion with the person who raised him (he!!! called him mama!!! it was genuinely cute wtf), questions about what makes someone human, revenge, etc... but I felt the ending episodes were kinda a weak letdown in comparison- it felt rushed, the whole show was about building up Hyakkimaru and Dororo’s bond, then they were barely together for the last two episodes, despite the final ep being named...Dororo and Hyakkimaru. There was also a kinda awkward part where Dororo and everyone had a drawn out conversation where they figured out the themes of the show while all this other shit was happening that felt just a little stiff.
Also as I put it on Twitter:
Hyakkimaru's mom: it'll be ok hyakkimaru will be able to remain human bc he has that child by his side!!!
 Everyone: yeah!
 Hyakkimaru: *leaves dororo immediately*
Priest guy: no see he had to leave you to go on a journey to regain his humanity
 Dororo: uuuuhhhh
And yeah, the series was as boring as possible with Dororo’s gender, very deliberately erasing a trans reading- I had a sinking feeling when they omitted Dororo’s “I AM a boy” line from the manga in the scene with the bandits (JUST that line too, it was so blatant), and indeed the last few seconds of the show make sure to assure us Dororo has grown up to be Appropriately Feminine. It’s so disappointing and insidious, they had the ability to update the story in a way that took out the gross gender essentialist comments from the manga while keeping a gnc/trans-coded character but instead they not only squandered that, but deliberately went out of their way to burn that bridge.
And even outside "going out of the way to erase a trans reading" I'm so tired of scrappy afab children always shown to grow up to look ~appropriately~ fem in media.
Nice animation at least though.
Tumblr media
Fruits Basket Brotherhood- (ongoing) watching this with a friend, so I’m behind, but it’s been fun so far. There’s some Questionable 90s Gender and Comedy Stuff they’re keeping intact from the manga, but overall its still a sweet, moving story to watch and the adaptation is pretty faithful from what I remember (and pretty lookin’!). And honestly I don’t remember a ton of the manga’s plot, just that there were Feels, so I’m ready to be surprised again. BRING ON MORE ZODIAC ANTICS, CRANKY CATBOY AND AWESOME GOTH AND SUKEBAN GIRL BFFS.
Tumblr media
Sarazanmai: I enjoyed it! It’s Ikuhara so it’s wall to wall Weird Queer Shit, gotta love that. PREPARE FOR MANY BUTT JOKES. the messy dramatic disaster teens that sucked me into their relationships by the end, and the adult mlm couple was treated very sympathetically, so I felt for them (plus I read the prequel manga and it was cute). The series was stubbornly optimistic in a way I appreciated in these troubled times, focusing on how hard it is to connect with others but how meaningful it is. Lots of interesting visuals too. I enjoyed reading everyone’s takes on it. I think it should have been longer (or perhaps not spent so much of its first half doing formula stock footage but THAT’S HOW IKUHARA ROLLS) and felt the last episode especially was a little rushed. It’s no Utena (what is) but it was interesting and I look forward to rewatching it sometime soon. Would probs be my pick of the season if we were actually ranking things.
Tumblr media
Carole and Tuesday (ongoing): Cute girls playing music, a fun, diverse cast, some nice wlw guest starring for an ep- honestly, it hasn’t blown me away with the characters or plot or anything, but it’s a mostly relaxing series to watch with an interesting setting, the animation is very nice, and hearing all the english songs is cool.
I am a bit concerned about where it might be going with its “martian androgyny syndrome (?)” subplot- I honestly have no idea what they’re trying to do with it and there’s some troubling implications with how they’re presenting the characters “afflicted”...but I guess we’ll see where it goes. That’s really my only big niggling concern there.

2019: Year in Review, I guess?
Or at least for the fan part of my life
All of the things that nobody asked, lol, but it’s kind of more for me to go back Dec 31, 2020 and be able like ‘Huh’
Top 3 Fics by Kudos
1. Ready Player One--it’s so funny that the fic I drunk wrote last January would be my most popular one from this past year.  While we were still relatively sober, I would grind out the establishing part of the scenes, with my partner in crime chipping in, and then as we got more drunk the two of us would try to come up with absurd options for the game.
2. Blood Inheritance--it was kind of a beast (I started writing last January and finished writing mid-June, and now it’s been 5+ months to edit & post like 2/3 of it) and parts of writing this were absolutely brutal, but with any big project I try to take some pride in the fact that I got the damn thing done
3. Cost of Valour--this was another beast that I put a lot of time into, kind of expecting that no one else would be interested in a Tortall AU for YOI, so it was nice to encounter the (super lovely) people out there who were also really into both of those fandoms.
And then my favourites for 2019...
Fics I wrote
1. the to be posted Ymir/Krista fic--it’s cute and fluffy and it it was just so much fun to write
2. Blood Inheritance--see above
3. Hearth--I just really loved writing about victuuri being bad ass fighters while still kind of soft and fluffy, and having a little family with Yurio
Shows
New
1. Dororo--this show broke my heart.  It’s gorgeous and painful and so damn good.
2. Demon Slayer--I was not expecting to love this as much as I did.  It kind of overwhelmed me with how good it was, and exceeded the hype.  It’s sad and funny and exciting, and the sort of thing that I wanted to rewatch the moment I’d finished the first season.
3. My Roommate is a Cat--I don’t know how, but this show made my cry.  When I try to explain to people at work why it was so good, I can hear how ridiculous I sound, but I don’t care.  This show is soft and cute, has so many feels, and the theme song has been on my main playlist for months.
New to Me
1. Anohana--oh god, this just...this just was so good and so sad.  But a good sad? And like a good painful?
2. March Comes in Like a Lion--so   his is gorgeous and comforting, but in a sort of somber way.  I had kind of a super shitty fall and this show was the thing that slowly made me feel a little more okay.
3. Food Wars--it is the pervy food school-days romp that I hadn’t realized I needed in my life until I watched it.  It’s funny, it’s OTT, and the characters are all just precious beans.
Non Anime Shows
1. Terrace House: Tokyo 2019-2020--oh god, this is the show that keeps on giving.  Like with just the first part it was amazing, and then the second...I watched Part 2 in like an afternoon the other day and jfc...how am I going to wait for Part 3???
2. Derry Girls--not sure if this came out this year or last, but I watched it this year (and we definitely got the second season on Netflix here this year).  This was so funny.  Like way funnier than I had anticipated, and made me nostalgic in a weird way for the sort of shit that used to go on during my undergrad days. It also has a great soundtrack and these serious moments that work so well.
3. Drag Race All Stars--s4 was so epic. SO EPIC. I am still crushed that Manilla went home the way she did.
Books
1. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson--the writing is gorgeous and sinister in this low-key, restrained way.  And the story/character is the sort of thing where I have a huge urge to write some sort of
2. A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahreh Mafi--beautiful writing and this voice that just kind of grabs you
3. With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo--so between this and The Poet X, Acevedo is officially on my automatically buy list whenever she next has a book out.  Her writing is SO DAMN GOOD, and she has this way of developing a voice that’s so wonderfully endearing and complicated, and viewing the world in these ways that skate between beautiful and painfully real
Manga
1. House of the Sun--it’s soft shoujo that has a kind of found family thing going on, and just really sort of explores the feelings of being left behind.  It’s sweet and cute, and unexpectedly funny in parts (though it kind of teeters on the edge of having the manga age gap issue, though it’s one where the context and how it develops make it feel like it might be okay)
2. Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun--I read this towards the start of the year and I still periodically try to explain certain funny bits from it.  Like, it’s the deadly combination of cute, dumb, and funny.  This is one of those series where I don’t really care how many volumes it take for it to wrap up, I kind of don’t want it to end.
3. World’s Greatest First Love--so...part of me feels like this is something that needs a lot of caveats before I explain why I like it.  It has some problematic elements to it (the usual that you would expect for BL), but it just has so many feels that it still kind of sweeps me along (especially for the the side story The Case of Shota Kisa).  Really, almost any manga that’s about writers/editors and I am there.
For this I feel like there need to be some honourable mentions because I read so much manga this year: My Hero Academia, Haikyu!!, Demon Slayer, Mars, Horimiya, The Way of the House Husband)
Looking forward to what 2020 brings

THE GREAT CRUNCHYROLL NARUTO REWATCH Has a Large Hairy Son in Episodes 183-189
Welcome to THE GREAT CRUNCHYROLL NARUTO REWATCH! I’m Joseph Luster, back in record time, and I’ll be your host this week as we barrel on through all 220 episodes of the original Naruto anime adaptation. In last week's episodes 176-182, we spent most of our time in the Hidden Star Village, but that arc comes to a swift end this week. Even more filler lies beyond, though, including the start of the Peddlers Escort Mission arc in episodes 183-189.
As you may be able to tell by the tone of some of these questions, I'm feeling a little deflated at this point. The filler can be overwhelming at times, but at least we have the occasional one-off to brighten our week. In this case, the highlight for me was most definitely the gag episode in which Naruto has to avoid laughing during a funeral despite every possible attempt to get him to crack. It might be the series' most successful attempt at straight-up comedy to date.
The rest of the batch was mostly disappointing, but there were a few ups to go along with the downs. As Crunchyroll user OrichalcosTwin1 said in last week's comments, "I enjoyed the Hidden Star Village filler, though as you're about to find out this week, I feel it could've concluded sooner and stuck around longer than it should've." I couldn't agree more. Let's find out what everyone else thought!
Do you love Sumaru's Mom's Ghost and her two-hit multi-target attacks? Did the finale of the Star Guard arc surprise you in any way, or was its ending written in the stars from the beginning?
Paul: It was good that the main resolution to the Star Village story involved the children and the other villagers rebelling against Akahoshi after he went Full Crazy-Eyes and freely confessed his evil plans to everyone within earshot, but for the ultimate confrontation, it should have been Sumaru receiving his mother's spiritual energy to deliver the final blow. This arc was Sumaru's story, and tacking Naruto onto the end like that feels like a missed opportunity.
David: Agreed. Ending a village’s internal political strife by punching the bad guy is one thing, but letting Naruto do it instead of the character most closely affected by the whole thing is pretty lame.
Jared: I basically laughed when Sumaru’s mom gave her power to Naruto instead of Sumaru. Way to bury the kid both figuratively and literally. Other than that, the arc ended basically how I expected with Akahoshi getting his comeuppance and being real dumb.
Kevin: The ending was predictable, aside from the stuff that made no sense. Of course the star was going to be destroyed, that way no one can try to bring it up as a power source later. Also, apparently ghosts exist in Naruto. I guess Orochimaru could’ve had a shortcut in creating the Reanimation Jutsu.
Danni: The whole thing just fell way off the rails, honestly. I’m so tired of evil villains in this show maniacally cackling about how evil they are while trying to kill a bunch of children.
Kara: I realized right as we were closing out that the Village Hidden in the Stars was literally just Naruto’s excuse to have fairies, after which point I kind of gave up on it making sense at all.
Noelle: It’s a very typical villain cliché, but I can’t say it doesn’t work. Some of that fantasy stuff sure did happen though.
Carolyn: It was definitely… weird. I have to agree with the above, that giving Naruto the power was a very odd choice. It also just feels like really weird and awkward writing. I know we’re in the land of filler, but this series is backflipping over the shark at this point.
It took putting Akamaru in great peril to make me realize nothing can ever happen to Kiba's sweet pee-spraying baby. Which Naruto characters would you defend with your life at this point?
Paul: The easy answer is Rock Lee, who is much more of a good boy than Akamaru. It's weird that Akamaru can have a full-on “An American Werewolf in Leaf Village” episode in which he severely injures numerous shinobi, including his own master, and yet he's allowed to continue his ninja-dog training like nothing happened. I figured they'd pull a trick where Akamaru wasn't infected and there was some other werewolf running around, but nope. Straight up Cujo.
David: Over the course of all this filler I’ve gotten even more attached to Neji and Tenten. Maybe I should go back and rewatch some episodes of that Rock Lee spinoff…
  Jared: ROCK LEE.
Kevin: Anime, if you ever try to hurt my ninja son Rock Lee ever again, the Five Great Nations are going to become the Five Great Craters.
Danni: ROCK LEE DEFENSE FORCE, ASSEMBLE! [sfx: Kamen Rider transformation noises]
Kara: Rock Lee, as the rest of the room says. And Hinata. Dear God, I can’t wait ‘til 50% of her lines aren’t “Naruto-kun…” She deserves better than she gets in pretty much any part of her life.
Noelle: As with everyone else, Rock Lee protection squad unite.
Carolyn: Hahaha, did we ever expect anything less than a giant chorus of people loudly cheering on good boy Rock Lee?
The Hidden Leaf Legend episode about Onbu made me think about all the aspects of the Naruto world of which we're not aware yet. From legends to history and beyond, what are you most curious about, and what would you like to see expanded upon in future episodes?
Paul: There should be an episode where Naruto and the other young ninja of Leaf Village get sent on a snipe hunt mission by Tsunade in search of the legendary tsuchinoko, only for Kakashi, Might Guy, and the other Jonin to prank the heck out of them. Then they actually find a real tsuchinoko during the third act, and it grows angry over them invading its territory, and hijinks ensue.
David: I was and am still interested in essentially anything that doesn’t have to do with ninjas. How does the rest of the world operate on a day-to-day basis, and how much, if at all, are they even aware of these ninja villages that seem to constantly be at war with each other?
Jared: I’m kind of surprised there hasn’t been more backstory on the early Hokage, unless that’s being saved for later in Shippuden. Outside of that, I think it’d be good just to dive into character backstories or just go full slice-of-life at some points.
Kevin: Honestly, I’m most curious about jutsu creation. We’ll get at least some insight into that later in Shippuden, but even then I’d still like to know a lot more.
Danni: I just wanna know why everyone in the Hidden Leaf Village loves the SEGA Dreamcast so dang much.
Kara: Considering weird ninja magic is essentially part of day-to-day life, I want to know what their escapist entertainment is like. What the heck do you read action comics about when you’re already halfway to a superhero? I’m guessing they have, like, Archiemaru or something where the escapism comes in the form of severe normality.
Noelle: Even knowing some of the stuff that comes later, there’s a lot of things that aren’t really that expanded upon. The discrepancy between technology and how that clashes or interacts with ninjutsu is one, and how ninja society seems to be something both out in the open but not something that everyone can do is another. We might get to why ninjutsu happens later, but what of the people who aren’t ninja, in a world so heavily slated toward magical powers and how those with magic seem to rule society?
Carolyn: We see villages with normal, non-ninja people fairly regularly, but we have no idea how they live. How do the government and ninja work together? Do they work together or do the ninja sort of work on their own laws/volition? Maybe that’s been answered, but I certainly don’t remember it.
As episode 186 reminds us, there's nothing more powerful than a forbidden laugh. Can you recall any particularly gut-busting "church laugh" moments in your life where you really lost it when you shouldn't have?
Paul: One time my sister got busted for accidentally cracking up during Christmas dinner because the decorative plates we were about to eat off of had a drawing of a little hobo Frosty the Snowman, complete with patches on his snow-suit. I guess the contrast of cloth patches on a suit made out of snow was too much for her, and she burst out laughing during what was supposed to be a solemn moment. She got grounded, and the Legend of the Hobo Snowman went down in Chapman family history.
David: I don’t remember the details but I do recall actually being sent to the principal in elementary school for being unable to control my laughter one day.
Jared: I can’t remember the specifics, but I’m pretty sure mine was an actual church laugh moment. Something must’ve made me have the giggles or I was just in a mood but I did that when I was going to church at the time and got in a bit of trouble for it.
Kevin: I was watching Dororo, and one episode in particular had a guest animator who apparently is known for his… unique art style. Hyakkimaru “running” (ice skating) uphill between trees forced me to pause the video so that I could stop hysterically laughing.
Danni: I have a rather subdued laugh usually, so I can’t think of any moments where laughing got me in trouble. However, a childhood spent watching a lot of America’s Funniest Home Videos has led to an adulthood full of instinctively laughing when people hurt themselves pratfalling.
Kara: I was on a bus in Cardiff a few years ago and there was a guy who refused to sit down or hang on or anything. The driver braked and the dude went sliding comically. A few people snickered but I busted out laughing way too big and He Did Not Appreciate That. I got off at the next stop to avoid having my head punched down my own neck. (As an aside, I’ve gotta express my appreciation for Naruto basing an entire episode around the concept of the Giggle Loop from Coupling.)
Noelle: Admittedly, I’m not the kind of person that bursts out laughing, even if emotions show on my face. My friends saying particularly wild things in public will always get me laughing, though.
Carolyn: Actual laugh or defensive laugh? I worked as a ride operator at an amusement park as a teen and some kids tried to run on the ride AS IT WAS MOVING. I had to use the emergency shutdown and started laughing like a maniac. The kids' parents were very angry at me for that, but some co-workers and other customers assured them it was a nervous laugh, which it was. They could have gotten very, very hurt and I didn’t know how to react to that.
As for an actual “wow that was funny” laugh … well, this story is a bit mean but it got to me hard. Outside my apartment one day, I saw a kid that was about 11-13 riding a bike and just toppled over and started laughing immediately. It was the way the bike fell. Usually, you imagine some wobbling, the handlebars going back and forth as they lose control or something. This was literally straight up to straight down in one immediate motion. It caught me by surprise. Also, the kid was fine.
That Brings Us to the Land of Gree— you know what? Forget these veggie peddlers, we're way beyond the point of no return in Filler Purgatory. I hardly remember what it was like when Naruto was good, and the writing is at an all time low for most of this batch. Could you ever recommend this show past episode 140 or so, and has this changed the way you feel about it as a whole?
Paul: I'm a completionist, so if I'm going to recommend something, I'm going to recommend all of it. You don't get to skip the boring or mediocre bits if you want to claim you've experienced a work of entertainment. The filler hasn't broken my spirit yet, and there are individual parts of it that I find compelling, although I admit nothing we've seen here compares to Naruto at its apex moments.
David: I’d just recommend skipping all of it, but if you’re gonna watch any of it, the second best thing is probably to skip the arcs and watch some of the one-off episodes instead. The best part about the filler has been the focus on some side characters who didn’t get much time before, and the mostly silly single-episode adventures get you that without having to sit through nonsense stories that just make you wish you were watching the actual story instead.
Jared: I might not necessarily recommend watching all of the filler, but maybe some of the better parts if they wanted to check that stuff out. People will watch what they watch and I’m not their dad, but I don’t think it’s necessarily all terrible like some people will lead you to believe. It certainly hasn’t changed my overall opinion of the show, it just makes me want to get back to the actual story. Although, if you want a test of endurance, then yeah, people should watch all the filler.
Kevin: The only way I can realistically recommend Naruto after Filler Purgatory started was if I was trying to talk about all of the interesting character interactions that come from unique team combinations. Unfortunately, even the filler arcs have turned into the same few teams on a loop, and the plots aren’t nearly interesting enough to carry 100 episodes. So in all honesty, unless you just want to full Naruto experience of waiting forever to get to Shippuden or REALLY want to know everything that happens, even if it’s filler, no, I can’t recommend watching past episode 140.
Danni: I refused to listen to anyone telling me to skip certain arcs of Dragon Ball since they were filler. I said that if I’m gonna watch it, I’m gonna watch all of it. That being said, I really wish I could just skip ahead to Shippuden right now.
Kara: This week of episodes has just been a hot mess. Not gonna lie. I’d been coasting because at least I could joke about them. But between this weird double-bluff veggie ninja story and the episode about Naruto adopting the kind of mascot character they’d add to a cartoon adaptation of a live-action 80s sitcom, I’m feeling anywhere from weak to done.
Noelle: I skipped over most of the filler in my original run of Naruto, and I’d say-- yeah, I’d still rather do that. Nothing here worth noting.
Carolyn: I don’t think I would recommend Naruto, as a whole or just cutting off the filler parts. There have been shows I couldn’t get into and people will say to wait for season 3 or 4. I just don’t understand highly recommending something that has so much not-good in it.
Finally, let's wrap up with the HIGHS and LOWS for this week.
Paul: My high point was everyone trying to make Naruto laugh, especially with how the humor-assassins would take one look at him and decide that anyone with such a foolish face would be an easy mark. I appreciate the low-grade shade that reminds us that Naruto is kind of a maroon. My low-point was the end of the Onbu episode, which concludes like a mash-up of the Tribbles episode of Star Trek and Gremlins. That joke didn't so much land as belly-flop.
David: High point was the preview for next week’s first episode - I’m excited to see Hinata getting to handle a fight on her own; hope that’s as neat as it looks. Low point was the ending of the star village arc for the same reasons I said in the first question.
Jared: High point for this week would probably be the end of the funeral episode with the ridiculous reveal, fake out, and then reveal of the dad being alive. It was probably one step away from going full “IT’S ME AUSTIN” in terms of that. Also, Shino just getting up in Naruto's face like NEVER TELL ANYONE ABOUT THIS PLEASE. Low point would probably be basically everything else. Land of Greens is just not great and the other episodes were pretty much just there. Glad we finally get to meet Boruto though, even if I thought he came later on in the series.
  Kevin:
High - The plan to take down the first of the enemy ninja in the Land of Greens. Sure, it’s a pretty short moment and not too difficult to figure out (he’s using his weapons as dowsing rods, so break the weapons and lure him to a place without water), but this is Filler Purgatory, and characters not being completely dumb is enough to be one of the better moments of the week.
Low - The Onbu episode. I like getting some worldbuilding, but like I said in my High, I also like characters not being excessively dumb, and practically every decision in the Onbu episode was some level of dumb.
Danni: High point was the entire funeral episode. It was such a solid comedic concept and the payoffs all landed perfectly. It’s exactly the kind of stupid I want out of all this filler. Honorable mention to the Onba episode, which was maybe a tier below but still some good dumb fun. Low point would have to be watching another arc end with a villain maniacally cackling while trying to murder a bunch of children with a crossbow. Low LOW point was when that one kid’s dead mom became a ninja ghost who just kind of held Naruto in the air like a limp cat.
Kara: High point was honestly Magnet Ninja. Like seriously that’s one of the most resourceful Jutsu sets I’ve seen: just grab those headband nerds by the headband. Secondary high point was the puns in the funeral episode that didn’t get translated in the subtitles (as a former subtitle editor, though, I don’t blame them for not trying). Low point was the wrap-up of the Village Hidden in the Seelie Court.
Noelle: High point, the funeral episode and how everything in it works pretty well. I wouldn’t say it’s all my kind of humor, but it’s functionally fairly solid. No complaints there. Low point… we’re just not going to address how fantasy elements in the afterlife are a thing now? No? Okay, I guess.
Carolyn: The uniforms and Naruto’s not-amused reaction to them were pretty great for me. The low point? I guess the weird ghost stuff. The last Scooby-Doo ghost episode was silly, but it also knew it was silly. They sort of took this seriously and that’s quite bizarre.

Note
Im literally pointing into the air with my finger randomly for your episode opinions cuz i like your thoughts. 39 and 169 and 300
ihad. a whole thing written out about ep 39,. and tumbltr glitched and deleted it. sigh. lets do this again
39 - the first christmas ep (A part) and The One Where Teaches Everyone How To Clean (B part) !!! This one is just a fun time. its got the aliens not knowing what chrismtas is bc theyre aliens,. tamama being a kid. whatever kururu and aki have going on. Tangent but like it’s really funny that kururu like,. Thinks Aki is hot? I guess? Because its established. in canon. that to keronians humans look weird as hell and kind of creepy. because like. duh. they look drastically different. Like. It’s not supposed to be “Kururu has weird as fuck taste” that’s not the joke they didn’t even think about that it’s just oouuu aki sexy big boob mom etc. But. Kururu canon alienfucker. Anyway what was I saying? Oh yeah it also has Keroro’s deep passion for Cleaning the House, which is always good. He loves that shit. Keroro probably reads blogs belonging to moms and housewives to look for cleaning tips. Its got all that what’s not to like. Fun episode.
169 - PART A IVE OMLY SEEN ONE TIME BUT I LOVE IT. urere is my best fuckin g friend in the whole wide world and it has dororo’s weird thing with driving and it has giroros train autism and it has a good gag and its a good episode. big fan. The b part is the giruru episode but I saw “giroro” and “beautiful girl” in the episode title and opted to only half pay attention when watching lmao
300 - OH THE ONONO ONE!!! i like this episode :) id almost forgotten its yet ANOTHER “Kiruru Going Haywire” story god. Well actually that kiruru system might have been working as intended. Well. They do work as intended half the time it’s just that how they’re intended to work is “kill a bunch of stuff real good” so it just kind of. They go bad no matter what. Ouuu kirurus are so interestiiiiiing!! Also there’s an old guy. i jest onono is cool but ive only seen the episode one time. He and darere - thats the name right darere? Hard to get the names of side frogs straight. Anyway - they would sure as hell have stuff to talk about. “Keron soldiers who have firsthand seen the keron army using vastly unnecessary destruction and violence and they did NOT fucking like it”. Boo keron everyone still hates your pussy!! I dont remember a ton of stuff that happened in this episode i just skimmed thru a few parts to remind myself but its a good episode i gotta be sure to rewatch it :)
