A successful couple of months for Luke Donald

Captain

Henrik Stenson was appointed Europe Ryder Cup captain for Rome 2023. Stenson snubbed the chance to captain Europe as he joined LIV series in July 2022. My opinion is that he could of waited until after the Ryder Cup to join LIV but could not turn down the money they offered him. The DP World Tour announced in August 2022 that Luke Donald would step in to captain Europe in Rome. Due to LIV the Europe team will change in Rome as Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Sergio Garcia and Paul Casey all joined the rebel golf league.

Strong core

The core of Europe’s team for Rome 2023 will be strong which includes current world number one, 2022 FedEx Cup champion and DP World Tour rankings winner Rory McIlroy. 2019 Champion Golfer Of The Year Shane Lowry returned to form in 2022 as he won the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. Lowry’s performance at Wentworth was remarkable as he had no bogeys for the entire tournament. Jon Rahm was one of the rare heroes at Whistling Straits in 2021 and showed he is still one of the best players in the game as he won both the Spanish Open & DP World Tour Championship in 2022. McIlroy is not the only European in the top ten of world golf rankings with Rahm in fifth and two-time Hero World Challenge winner Viktor Hovland in ninth. My opinion is that Hovland, Rahm, McIlroy and Lowry will be massive if Europe want to win the Ryder Cup in 2023.

English

Tommy Fleetwood was outstanding in the last Ryder Cup to be held in Europe as he won four out of five matches at Paris National. Fleetwood won the Nedbank Golf Challenge in 2019 but held onto the title for nearly three years due to covid-19. The Nedbank returned to the schedule in 2022 were the Englishman won his second title at the Gary Player Country Club in three years. He finished in the top five at 2022 DP World Tour Championship and has finished second in two majors in The Open at Royal Portrush in 2019 & the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in 2018. My opinion is that 2023 will be a big year for Fleetwood with been involved at 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome. Fleetwood won’t be the only Englishman on Donald’s team as you also have 2022 U.S. Open champion at Brookline Matt Fitzpatrick and runner-up at 2022 DP World Tour Championship Tyrell Hatton.

Other winners

Robert MacIntyre returned to the winner’s circle at the 2022 Italian Open at Marco Simeone Golf Club. This is the same course were the 2023 Ryder Cup will be held. It was an impressive win for the Scotsman as he defeated Fitzpatrick in a play-off. In 2014 Stephen Gallacher played at the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles but there has been no Scottish player on the team since then. MacIntyre has a chance of making the team as either automatically or through a pick for Rome due to winning on the same course.

French Open

Guido Migliozzi finished in the top five at 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. The Italian has been quiet but returned to the winner’s circle as he won the 2022 French Open. This was a good victory as winning on Paris National is not easy due to the course having plenty of water. If Migliozzi continues to impress in 2023, he might make the team as a wildcard due to been Italian.

Seamus

The Irishman won his second tournament on the PGA Tour at the 2022 Bermuda Championship. He has started the 2022/2023 season in great form as he is leading the FedEx Cup standings. He also has an outside chance of making Donald’s team next year.

Conclusion

Seven certainties in Donald’s team which are McIlroy, Rahm, Hovland, Lowry, Fleetwood, Fitzpatrick and Hatton. The other five places are up for decision and Donald will have all of next year to make up his mind. It’s between Power, MacIntyre, Migliozzi, 2022 Honda Classic winner Sepp Straka, 2022 Irish Open winner Adrian Meronk, Denmark brothers Rasmuis & Nicolai Hoejgaard. Also throw five points winner from Paris National Francesco Molinari and 2013 U.S. Open champion Justin Rose if they both find form again in 2023. Maybe you might see 2018 Ryder Cup player Alex Noren come back into the fold as he finished tied second at the recent 2022 DP World Tour Championship. How can you forget big hitting Belgian Thomas Pieters as he won the 2022 Abu Dhabi Golf Championship and played at 2016 Ryder Cup.

Finally

It will be tough for Europe in 2023 as USA are still extremely strong with beating the Internationals by a score line of 17.5 to 12.5 at 2022 Presidents Cup.

Changing of the guard for Team Europe

Whistling Straits

The 2020 Ryder Cup was a disaster for Europe at Whistling Straits as USA won by a score line of 19-9. The 2020 European Ryder Cup Captain Padraig Harrington went with experience by picking Ian Poulter (The Postman) and Sergio Garcia as wildcards for Whistling Straits. These picks backfired as 2012 Medinah hero The Postman only won one game at the 2020 Ryder Cup. The Postman wasn’t the only European to disappoint as fellow Englishman and 10-time European Ryder Cup player Lee Westwood also only won one point at Wisconsin. Europe had no answers for the fantastic form shown by the USA superstars which included 2020 US Masters Champion Dustin Johnson winning five points from five matches.

Breakaway

A lot has happened both on and off the course in the last 12 months since the 2020 Ryder Cup. LIV stands for 54 in roman numerals which equals the number of holes that will be played at each LIV event. LIV was first set up in October 2021 with 1986 & 1993 Open Championship winner Greg Norman who was confirmed as their Chief Executive Officer (CEO). LIV is funded by Saudi Arabia. There is 8 events scheduled in 2022 with each winner receiving $4 million and earning $120,000 for finishing last in an event. LIV was set up to rival the PGA Tour and in my opinion LIV is not competitive and lacks motivation.

Contract

Ian Poulter is famous for his role in Europe’s incredible comeback against USA at Medinah in 2012 as they came from 10-6 behind to win the Ryder Cup but he joined LIV for a reported figure between $20 and $30 million. Poulter wasn’t the only European to join LIV as fellow Englishman Lee Westwood joined for $30 million and 2017 Us Masters Champion Sergio Garcia joined for $125 million. Fellow Europeans Paul Casey and Martin Kaymer also joined LIV. The biggest disappointment for the DP World Tour was when 2023 European Ryder Cup Captain Henrik Stenson jumped ship to join LIV instead of been the leader of the team in Rome next year.

On the course

Rory McIlroy continues to be the spokesperson for keeping the traditional tours strong and used this as a motivator to become the first golfer to win the FedEx Cup three times. BMW PGA Championship was the first tournament to count for points towards the 2023 Ryder Cup. Shane Lowry was one of a few highlights at Whistling Straits in 2021 and the 2019 Champion Golfer Of The Year finally won his first event in three years. Jon Rahm had an extraordinary finish at the BMW PGA Championship when he shot a round of 62 to post 16 under. Rory continued to be consistent but left his eagle putt on the lip at the 18th hole which ruled him out of a play-off. Lowry then went on to win the flagship event on the DP World Tour. If Lowry continues that form he will be a huge part of the 2023 Ryder Cup team next year. The Irish had their win at Wentworth but then it was Scotland’s turn as Robert MacIntyre won the Italian Open.

Conclusion

It will be a different team next year without the stalwarts that joined LIV but Europe still have a strong core of players which includes Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton,  Matthew Fitzpatrick and Victor Hovland. The second half of the team will include the likes of Shane Lowry, Robert MacIntyre, Thomas Pieters and Victor Perez. Pieters is returning to form after his top three finish at 2022 Open de France and Perez has a point to prove after not making the 2020 Ryder Cup team. Danish brothers Nicolai and Rasmuis Hojgaard will also have a say about making the team as they are both exceptional. With the Ryder Cup in Rome, Italian Francesco Molinari will also be looking to return to form or you might see the rise of 2022 Open de France winner Guido Migliozzi make his debut in Italy. USA still have a strong team as they beat the Internationals by 17.5 to 12.5 at 2022 Presidents Cup and Europe will need their best players playing well at 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome.

Niall Horan's management company gets first European Tour win

With Guido Migliozzi’s win at the Kenyan Open on Sunday, Niall Horan’s Modest Golf Management earned its first European Tour victory.

Migliozzi, 22, from Italy, shot a 2-under 69 with four birdies and two bogeys to finish the tournament 16-under 268. A third-round 64, in which he totaled eight birdies and a lone bogey on No. 18, helped Migliozzi take a share of the lead heading into the final round.

Migliozzi finished his first Euro Tour win one stroke ahead of a three-way tie for second. A graduate of qualifying school, the Italian was playing in his 14th European Tour event. Until Sunday his best finish this year was a T-56 at the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

“I like this moment,” Migliozzi said. “I like the pressure, it’s like a drug. I love pressure, I love playing with a lot of people looking at me and a lot of cameras.

Horan, an Irish musician and former member of One Direction, founded the company less than three years ago as a division of One Direction’s agency, Modest Management. The 25-year-old is credited with being “the driving force” behind Modest Golf.

Horan responded to Migliozzi’s win and Modest Golf’s accomplishment Sunday on Twitter.

Horan, who enjoys playing golf himself, has worked closely with Drive, Chip and Putt in the United States, a playoff that works to teach the benefits of golf to children aged 7-15. Gwk
