#RoyalVisitPakistan Review

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s official visit to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan has come to an end after five days of engagements, fashion, and last-minute weather disasters. This was the Cambridges’ most high-ranking and complex tour yet, as they visited the country while they are in a state of near-war with India.

Day One - Arrival

Number of engagements: 1 (Arrival at Nur Khan Airbase)

The Duke and Duchess arrived in Pakistan at 9:30pm, local time on Monday 14th October, where they were received by the British High Commissioner to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan (His Excellency Mr Thomas Drew). The Duchess wore a Catherine Walker ensemble, which appeared to have been inspired by the Pakistani shalwar kameez. She also wore her Rupert Sanderson ‘Malory’ Heels, Zeen Woman Earrings, and carried her Zeen Woman Clutch.

Day Two - Education

Number of engagements: 5 (Visit to the Islamabad Model College for Girls; visit to the Margalla Hills; called upon The President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Mrs Arif Alvi; called upon Mr Imran Khan; attended a Reception at the Pakistan Monument given by the High Commissioner to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan)

On their first full day in Pakistan, the Duke and Duchess remained in Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan. Their first visit was to the Islamabad Model College for Girls (a public school for children from nursery-age to adult), where they learnt more about the Teach for Pakistan programme. Teach for Pakistan is modelled on Teach First, a programme which focuses on improving quality of teaching in schools in the UK. They then went to The Margalla Hills, which is found at the base of the Himalayan Mountain Range. They helped children set up a leopard camera trap, and identify different species of plants. During these engagements, the Duchess wore a Maheen Khan shalwar kameez in Royal Blue, as well as her Zeen Woman Earrings.

The Cambridges then met with President Arif Alvi and, later, Prime Minister Imran Khan. While meeting President Alvi, the Cambridges learnt about Mrs Arif Alvi’s work with breast cancer, and the Duke had the idea to wear breast cancer pins in the photos released from the events. After meeting with Mr Khan, the couple remained and enjoyed lunch with the Prime Minister. Catherine wore a Catherine Walker tunic (in Pakistani green), as well as trousers from Maheen Khan and a Satragni dupatta. She also wore her Zeen Woman Earrings, Emmy London ‘Rebecca’ Shoes, and she carried her Emmy London ‘Natasha’ Clutch.

For their final engagement of the day, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge atteneded a reception at the Pakistan Monument. The reception was celebrating the very best of Pakistani music and culture, as well as highlighting the UK-Pakistan relationship. William shocked everyone by wearing a Pakistani sherwani, while Catherine wore a sparkly green Jenny Packham gown, as well as Jimmy Choos and new Onitaa Women Earrings.

Day Three - Conservation

Number of engagements: 5 (Visiting a retreating glacier; visiting Bumburet village; watching a Search & Resuce drill; meeting with Kalash people; meeting with General Qamar Javed Bajwa)

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge travelled to Chitral, in Northern Pakistan, for a day focused on the climate and on conservation. For their first engagement of the day, the Duke and Duchess visited a glacier in the Hindu Kush mountain range. There they learned about how climate change is impacting the glacial landscapes. They then travelled to a Bumburet Village, which suffered from severe flash flooding as a result of nearby glaciers melting. William and Catherine then watched a drill conducted by volunteers from the local Emergency Response Team, which is supported by UK aid, as well as a drill by a local Search and Rescue Team, who demonstrated their ability to evacuate casualties across a river. Before leaving Chitral, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited a settlement of the Kalash people, to learn more about the Kalash community and their unique heritage and traditions. During these events, the Duchess wore an understated outfit made up of two different UFO dupattas, as well as a UFO skirt and a pair of UFO sunglasses. She also wore a Mint Velvet dress (as a shirt), her Really Wild waistcoat, and her Really Wild boots.

After returning to Islamabad, the Duke and Duchess received General Qamar Javed Bajwa, the Chief of Army Staff, and Mrs Qamar Bajwa.

Day Four - Communities (Culture)

Number of engagements: 6 (Arrival in Lahore; SOS Children’s Village; National Cricket Academy; Badshahi Mosque; meeting faith leaders; Shaukat Khanum Children's Cancer Centre)

For their final full day in Pakistan and the best day of their tour, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge travelled to Lahore, a city known as Pakistan’s city of culture. After arriving and being received by the government of Lahore, the day began in earnest at SOS Children’s Village, a charitable organisation in the heart of the city. The village, which is attached to a school, provides a home and family structure to over 100 children. The Duchess gave her first speech on the tour during this event. The couple then visited the National Cricket Academy, where they joined a match with children who are participating in the British Council’s DOSTI programme. During the morning, the Duchess wore a Gul Ahmed shalwar kameez, along with a Maheen Khan Shawl, new J Crew Pumps, her Asprey Oak Leaf Earrings, and she carried her Mulberry ‘Bayswater’ Clutch (she changed into Hampton Canvas trainers for the cricket match).

In the afternoon, the Duke and Duchess visited the Badshahi Mosque, the most iconic Islamic site in Lahore. The couple toured the mosque and courtyard, before joining a discussion with faith leaders to understand how they are promoting interfaith harmony within their communities. Afterwards, they travelled to the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, a state-of-the-art cancer facility located in the centre of Lahore. The Duke and Duchess visited the children’s ward to spend time with patients undergoing treatment at the hospital, and will spoke to a number of their families. Catherine wore a Maheen Khan shalwar kameez, her Catherine Zoraida Fern Hoop Earrings, and the J Crew Pumps she first wore that morning. While at the hospital, Catherine also donned her only tiara of the tour.

Day Five - Military

Number of engagements: 2 (Army Canine Centre; Departure from Pakistan) THIS IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE WHEN THE CC IS RELEASED

The final day of the tour was disrupted somewhat, after the Cambridges were forced to spend the night in Lahore due to an electrical storm. Because of this, they were forced to miss a planned trip to the Khyber Pass. The Duke and Duchess were sighted leaving Lahore in the morning, with the Duchess wearing an Elan embroided kurta, J Crew pumps, a Maheen Khan dupatta, Accessorize earrings, and carrying her Smythson bag.

For the new first engagement, the Duke and Duchess visited the Army Canine Centre, where they joined dog handlers as they train dogs to recognise and scout out hidden explosive materials. They then supported some of the puppies who were undertaking the an agility training course. Shortly afterwards, the Cambridges departed from Nur Khan Airbase. Catherine had changed into a Beulah London coat and Russell & Bromley shoes, while still wearing her Maheen Khan dupatta and Accessorize earrings.

Ghotki Train Accident: Death toll mounts to 43, rescue operation underway

At least 50 people lost their lives and 70 others sustained injuries as Sir Syed Express train collided with a Millat Express between Reti and Daharki railway stations in Ghotki.

According to the railways’ officials, the accident occurred when a Sargodha-bound Sir Syed Express collided with a Millat Express that was already present at the track after the derailment, said sources.

As many as 14 boogies of both the trains were damaged out of which four were completely destroyed.

DC Ghotki, Usman Abdullah confirmed the death of at least 50 passengers and added that over 70 people sustained injuries. Getting the information about the incident, the police and rescue teams reached the spot for the rescue and relief operation.

DC Usman Abdullah said heavy machinery and cutters are required for the operation. Following the major train accident, up and down railway traffic has been suspended.

The driver of the ill-fated Sir Syed Express train, Aijaz Shah said he was rescued by the local after two hours of the collision.

Detailing the train incident, the engine driver said the train was running at its normal speed after leaving Reti station and later he suddenly saw the derailed bogies of Millat Express train at the track.

Due to the short distance the train rams into the derailed bogies of Millat Express.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said relief and rescue efforts are underway at the train accident site and Army and Rangers troops are assisting in the relief and rescue operation.

A military doctor and paramedics, along with ambulances, moved from Pannu Aqil has also reached the incident site, the ISPR statement read.

It said that engineer resources have been moved to carry out necessary relief and rescue work. The army s special engineer team Urban Search and Rescue is being heli-lifted from Rawalpindi to the crash site to speed up relief and rescue efforts.

The district administration has released the names of the injured admitted to Sheikh Zayed Hospital. The injured include Muhammad Aslam son of Gumer Khan, Maqbool Ahmed son of Iqbal, Khalilur Rehman son of Abdul Aleem, Aasia daughter of Muhammad imran, Rubina daughter of Ahsan Elahi, Azra daughter of Allah Rakha are admitted to Sheikh Zayed Hospital Raheem Yar Khan.

Naseer, Aijaz Hussain, Mumtaz Bibi, Sami, Hussain Rabbani, Allah Ditta, Basheer Ahmed, Aftab, Babar, Hafza, Gul Shabir, Muhammad Ishaq, Khudadad, Kainat, Kosar, Abbas, Javed Akhtar, Gul Sahab, Musharraf and Dilawar are also among the injured passengers.

The process of identification of the injured is underway, said the hospital administration.

Last August, the unthinkable occurred. Just as the very first civil case involving CIA torture was about to go to trial, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced a settlement in the lawsuit against two psychologists, James Mitchell and John “Bruce” Jessen, who designed and implemented the agency’s brutal program.

The ACLU brought the lawsuit on behalf of Suleiman Abdullah Salim, Mohamed Ahmed Ben Soud, and the family of Gul Rahman, who froze to death in a secret CIA prison. The three men were tortured and experimented on using methods developed by Mitchell and Jessen. Although the full terms of the settlement agreement are confidential, the outcome shows that those who engage in torture on behalf of the United States government can and will be held responsible.

Mitchell and Jessen have a sordid history in government-sponsored torture. In 2005, they founded a company that the CIA contracted to run its entire torture program and were paid $81 million for their services over several years. The psychologists tortured prisoners themselves, trained CIA personnel in their methods, and supplied interrogators to the agency’s secret “black site” prisons.

Until this historic win, every lawsuit against the CIA torture program had been dismissed at initial stages because lawyers for the government argued that letting the cases proceed would reveal state secrets. But not this time. Not only was the CIA forced to release secret records, but the doctors and high-ranking CIA officials Jose Rodriguez and John Rizzo had to testify about torture during depositions.

When it comes to obtaining crucial information from masterminds of terrorist attacks, what should officials do when U.S. Army Field Manuals methods dont work and American lives are at stake?

That’s the question James E. Mitchell, psychologist and architect of the CIAs controversial enhanced interrogation program, hopes the administration of incoming president Donald Trump takes on – and then opts for the less politically correct answer.

During the presidential campaign, Trump sanctioned torture, suggesting that he would bring back techniques like waterboarding and much worse. However, his pick to head the Department of Defense, Gen. James Mattis, is an opponent of harsh interrogation methods preferring more humanitarian means such as building rapport.

Mitchell contends that rapport is more likely to work on regular jihadists, but that top-tier planners are ultimately counting on Americas political correctness and going soft on them to make the terrorists mission easier.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (K.S.M.) really thought that Sept. 11 was a law enforcement matter that would get turned over to the FBI and would give him time to launch more attacks, Mitchell, 64, told FoxNews.com. He was stunned when Bush said, No, this is a war. He would froth at the mouth talking about that cowboy George W. Bush.

Mitchell and fellow psychologist Bruce Jessen were brought on as CIA contractors after 9/11 to devise and carry out the enhanced interrogation techniques (EITs) used on the most high-value prisoners, including chief 9/11 planner K.S.M. and senior Al Qaeda member, Abu Zubaydah. Mitchell spent countless hours with these prisoners at a number of CIA black sites.

He also stressed to FoxNews.com that the full closure of Guantanamo Bay, where the likes of K.S.M. and Zubaydah are being held, would be a mistake.

The ones that are left are the worst of the worst, Mitchell said. Closing Gitmo is one of those things some politicians believe will make the world like us more and give us the moral high ground. But in the mind of K.S.M., us seeking the moral high ground is a sign of weakness.

Mitchell recalled one afternoon sitting around with K.S.M. when the detainee admitted that while jihadist outfits do use Gitmo as a recruiting tool, if the off-shore prison were closed they would just find other fodder such as the treatment of Muslim women in Europe or the presence of infidels in the Arabian peninsula.

But what most surprised him about K.S.M. was how charming and likable he could be.

He would hold your hand, trying to manipulate [you], Mitchell said. It is easy to recognize evil when it looks evil and acts evil. It is harder to recognize evil when it looks appealing.

Mitchell came under fire in late 2014 when the then Sen. Dianne Feinstein-led Senate Select Committee on Intelligence released an exhaustive report on interrogation techniques used on detainees. Feinstein called the program a stain on our values and our history.

However, Mitchell argues that the Senate cherry-picked documents to suggest that the CIAs use of such harsh techniques was ineffective at collecting accurate intelligence.

In his experience, Mitchell said, the agency gathered useful information not during the duress of an actual EIT but in the moments in-between, when detainees knew what was awaiting them.

He also told FoxNews.com that the public unveiling of the indictment and banning of previously DOJ-approved techniques like waterboarding and sleep-deprivation plays into the terrorist playbook.

It made us look divided, that we are weak, Mitchell said. It signals to them that there are people in our government who are only concerned about preserving the moral high ground. And K.S.M. did say that (Americans) dont have the stomach to do what needs to be done, and that is what this signals.

Mitchell has since sought to set the record straight about his involvement in the program and late last year released the book, “Enhanced Interrogation: Inside the Minds and Motives of the Islamic Terrorists Trying to Destroy America,” written in conjunction with former CIA spokesperson Bill Harlow.

In 2015, two former detainees held at secret CIA prisons Tanzanian Suleiman Abdullah Salim and Libyan Mohamed Ahmed Ben Soud as well as a representative of Afghan citizen Gul Rahman, who died in custody likely from hypothermia, filed a lawsuit against Mitchell and Jessen for allegedly violating their human rights. The plaintiffs are seeking compensatory and punitive damages. 

Human rights groups also have called for the contractors to be prosecuted.

While some CIA personnel may not have acted with government approval during interrogations, Mitchell said, he is adamant that he and Jessen are merely fall guys.

The lawsuit trial is slated to begin in June and if they are found liable, it would be the first time that a U.S civilian court has held any individuals accountable for widely condemned interrogation methods like waterboarding.

And the irony of this is that the only two people who really tried to get Rahman medical care, Mitchell stated, were me and Bruce.
