A Muttsy aka Mutsy story

It's been a little while since I told a story about a Gund Muttsy (spellings may vary). There are a lot of them out there, each with there own story, and well loved by their person.

Of course, by the time they get to me, the leather has worn through on their paws, or the fur has compressed, or they're balding. They're pretty thin to begin with and they get really skinny as they're hugged over the years as well.

The most recent Mutsy to visit the hospital came from New York and had an interesting balding pattern. Here are his diagnosis photos:

His footpads were surviving quite well, and he has that one inner leg that's in great shape (there's also healthy fur inside an ear) but most of him was very bald. It was important to keep as much original as possible, including the well loved eyes and nose, but to treat the balding so he could continue to go on adventures with his 8 year old human. There were concerns that he'd be too different (they didn't want him to look new) so while the plan was to recover him everywhere he was bald and give him new stuffing, I agreed to send photos after the first new fur was on for approval. If they didn't like it, I'd take it off, no harm, no foul.

There were several fur options:

I also sent swatches so they could feel the fabrics. They chose a furry fleece because it was a very good color match, and visually in between his surviving long fur and his bald skin.

Meanwhile, he got restuffed with his heart of original fabric:

That's all one panel of fabric. The answer was "Looks good!" so surgery proceeded.

And here he is all better, ready to fly home:

His family wrote:

Gund 10 inch Muttsy dog (1985)

One of the smaller Muttsys in my collection, this one is the same size as Jane but in the more common golden colour.

Although she's small, she's very nice to hold and pet!

#Spudnik made a new friend - Muttsy the dog (Gund)! One of my earliest childhood memories was of a stuffed dog named Muttsy. Muttsy belonged to my big sister, but I absolutely adored him. The exact details are a bit fuzzy, but I believe I snafooed Muttsy from my sister one day when I was about 3 or 4, and managed to bring him to school with me. At the time I was in Casa (Montessori Kindergarten). My best friend and I brought out Muttsy to play during recess. I has ALWAYS loved dogs and I adored Muttsy. We were playing with him, and we put him in our favourite tree for a moment. Well, when I went to get Muttsy, Muttsy was not there. We looked. We hunted. We got the teachers to help. Muttsy was no where to be found and I was heartbroken. I loved Muttsy, but what was worse was he belonged to my sister and I took him without permission (big sis may need to confirm this but I don't believe she let me borrow him). A few weeks later, my parents bought me a new Gund stuffie named Puddles. Never again was I allowed to bring my toys to school. When I went to drop off groceries to my mum's this week, imagine my surprise when I opened the door to see Muttsy (looking better than ever!) and a note. Apparently he went on a trip around the world, but my mum was able to get him back. Now he's come home and will stay here forever. 🐶💗 Do you have any cute or funny stories about when you were a kid? I have another story about a stuffed dog too when I was a bit older (6? Maybe), and it also involved me taking the dog without asking 😬 but this stuffed dog belonged to the nursery school at church. My mum found out and while I tried to fib my way out. She was having none of it and made me return the dog and apologise. Muttsys

Have you ever seen muttsy dogs? I may have talked about some here. Most are a tannish color, about 15" long, with faux suede pawpads. They look like they're reaching their arms up to be hugged when they are young. They're never really plump... they're a skinnier breed. Well, today I thought I'd tell you the story of a Muttsy dog from Canada, with a bonus at the end of a giant Muttsy (the biggest I've seen at least) who went home last week.

First up, Joey the Muttsy from Canada. He was a pretty typical muttsy in size and shape, though no animal is typical in memory or history, and Joey was no exception there. Every animal holds the memories and stories of their person or people.

As you can see, he had some significant balding on his back and pawpads, a bit of balding in front, and quite a bit of weight loss from stuffing compression due to age and hugs. His person is one of you dear readers, and she was starting to worry about him.

Now given the localization of his balding, some people opt for fur transplants just on bald spots. But Joey's person felt, after 35 years, he deserved a full spa and a full new coat of fur, to make him sturdy and clean and plump and fluffy again. So that was the plan. We scheduled an appointment and he flew down from Canada.

The first step was the spa, so he of course had a bubble bath photo:

I think he kind of looks like he's doing a doggie paddle here. :-)

Once he was dry, it was time to choose his new fur. I wait till after the spa so you can see the fur in comparison to his own fur in a clean and as fluffy as possible condition. There were a couple of options:

His human opted for the slightly darker fur. I went ahead and started restuffing and recovering him. Of course he got a heart preserving a bit of his original stuffing. I like to think the hearts help them hold all the memories:

Now as I mentioned, Muttsy style dogs usually have a faux suede or faux leather (or sometimes real leather) footpad. Joey's surviving footpads showed they weren't real leather original, so these were the options for the soles of Joey's feet:

His person went for the faux suede. Here he is, all better and once more reaching out his arms for hugs:

Joey flew home to Canada, and his person wrote:

He just got home! Looks fantastic, thank you so much for your careful work!

But I did promise a bonus at the end of Joey's story. The largest Muttsy I've ever seen in the hospital.:-) This Muttsy is named Mutsie, and she is 28 inches long, 38" including her tail, which is also stuffed!

You can see her here next to her warm blooded sibling, which gives you an idea of both her size, and the compression of her stuffing and flattening of her fur which were concerning her person:

She was in pretty good shape otherwise, so her person was looking for a spa for her. Here she is starting her bubble bath:

Of course she got a heart with some original stuffing when she got restuffed:

And here she is getting her chubbiness approved: clean, stuffed, fur fluffed but with an open seam to adjust as needed:

Her person said:

Yes she looks perfect! It's so nice to see her all cleaned up and refreshed, thank you so much!

So I closed her up and she flew home to Arizona (in a much bigger box than she arrived in, because she was so much plumper and fluffier!).

1985 Gund Muttsy dog 🐶

I tracked down one of these because I love their retro look. This one is older for a plushie- her tag says 1985, so she's around 39 years old!

Her fur looks a bit grey in places, but she smells strongly of washing powder, so she was washed before being sent to me and isn't dirty. I think her fur just looks this way because she's old, which isn't a bad thing!

I've named her Jane. A nice classic literary name for an older girl. 💖

I totally fell in love with the design of the Gund Muttsy dog. I didn't plan to, but in a short time, I've acquired three! ❤️

The golden ones arrived together yesterday. I used a name quiz for temporary names, but they're sticking I eventually thought of my own.

The big golden dog is called Geneva Kelly, the smaller one is called Lyric Marie, and the white dog is Jane who's been in some of my posts already 🐶
