I haven't had time to write a proper review so all I'll say is this is better than Mexican Gothic, with a likeable male protagonist. He and the female main character didn't interact till the end, which is a letdown since that was promised but I enjoyed this story. Synopsis: Mexico in the 1970s is a dangerous country, even for Maite, a secretary who spends her life seeking the romance found in cheap comic books and ignoring the activists protesting around the city. Hey everyone. I just want to let everyone know what's happening with this account. As many of you know this acct was originally about books but I wanted to branch out and find more inspo, however that's proving to be hard when my parents STILL don't want to understand how social media marketing works, plus WFH doesn't help in the creativity dept, so I've gradually posted less. As a result I won't focus as much on SMM and blogging. I'll continue but lack of creativity withholds me from doing what I enjoy daily. My new goal is to post as much as possible on Stories and at least once a week on the feed. I'm also going to stick to more non-literary content such as college advice. Hello everyone! How's the weather where you live? It's too hot where I am; I hate how Spring (where I live) consists of cold days, a FEW warm one's, then the rest of it hot 😡 Most of you probably know this month is Asian-American & Pacific Island (AAPI) Heritage Month in the U.S. As an Asian myself I'm happy to celebrate my race and culture while uplifting other Asians. I'm a mixed South Asian and Chinese Caribbean (which also means the celebrations continue for others like me in June for Caribbean Heritage Month), a fusion that's kind of rare in the U.S., but nevertheless one I struggle to relate to. Most Asian literature and entertainment focus on those from the mainland (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, etc) so I couldn't sympathize or empathize with the characters 100%. I always felt like a bystander, constantly feeling left out or denied due to the fact I look racially ambiguous; only until I came across the Guyanese community here did I begin to feel more at ease with myself. I honestly don't know too much about Indo-Chinese-Guyanese culture but I know there are similarities. Right now I'm working on a list of Asian books I'll read for this month and can't wait to post my review of a contemporary novel that I can (finally!) closely relate to! It's an Indo-Guyanese-Canadian YA novel called In the Key of Nira Ghani by Natasha Deen, dealing with assimilation, culture-clash, and being a first generation Canadian. Remember last NYE when people captioned and posted Peaky Blinders memes and pics saying "The roaring '20s are back!" with excitement for this year? Hello everyone, Happy June! How was your reading progress last month? I'm STILL going through a reading slump, now with a dash of mood reading, but I guess it wasn't as bad as I thought. My average monthly reads are usually 3, so I didn't fall behind. May was definitely Star Wars month for me! 2 out of 3 reads are part of that franchise; I set aside 1 read for AAPI Heritage Month and planned on reading a collection of short stories that falls under that same category, but I had to DNF after my mind decided to focus on The Last Jedi.
