I haven't had time to write a proper review so all I'll say is this is better than Mexican Gothic, with a likeable male protagonist. He and the female main character didn't interact till the end, which is a letdown since that was promised but I enjoyed this story. Synopsis: Mexico in the 1970s is a dangerous country, even for Maite, a secretary who spends her life seeking the romance found in cheap comic books and ignoring the activists protesting around the city. When her next-door neighbor, the beautiful art student Leonora, disappears under suspicious circumstances, Maite finds herself searching for the missing woman-and journeying deeper into Leonora's secret life of student radicals and dissidents. #velvetwasthenightnovel #velvetwasthenightsilviamorenogarcia #velvetwasthenightbook #velvetwasthenight #silviamorenogarcia #latinaauthor #latinaliterature #latinalit #latinabook #hispanicliterature #hispanicheritagemonth2022 #latinheritagemonth2022 #guyanesegrammer #guyaneseamericanebookstagrammer #mexicanliterature #mexicanlit #mexicanstory #mexicannoir #noir #historicalfiction #basedontrueevents #historicalfictionnoir #latinnoir #hispanicnoir #ereview #ebookstagrammer #ebook #bookreview https://www.instagram.com/p/CkHtbckrJOF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Trees, women and children

Voices, affections, brightness, joy,

Indeed. Me and my ten fingers.
Now the sun isn’t horrendous like a cheek that’s ready:
it isn’t a piece of clothing or a speechless flashlight.
Nor is it the answer heard by our knees,

To my friend Mr. Doctor José Ignacio Escobar.
this lonely life
that I carry here,
With my wife and with my children
and my dogs,
I don't change it for life
Of the towns...
I do not lack or tobacco,
Nor food;
From my palms is the wine.
More than good,
And the juice of my canes
Great!…
Here no one stuns me ;
the prefect
And the police troop
They live far…

It rains outside the window (Verlainesque
rain, if not in my heart:
my heart ran away one morning
in pursuit of another song).
It rains outside the window (melancholic
rain, in some ways so poetic
– but less, prosaic, or so symbolic . . . )
It rains, it rains, nothing more . . . dismal Rain.
I never knew how to watch the rain
outside the window – philosophic trance –
more often…

-Mexican poet
Your essence will not have changed,
but your path is fearsome;
although you were born peaceful,
living you have become unhinged.
Today you are already exorbitant
and in gray confusion you advance;
to the abysses you throw yourself
and you proclaim heights.
Dust, why are you rushing
exterminating hopes?

In the port, a forest of containers replaces the seagulls,

Where are the prostitutes that the sailors are looking for,
the prostitutes with bare backs, swinging their dyed hair?
And where are the children blinding their eyes in the noise of the street, to

Happy Hispanic/Latin Heritage Month to the Hispanic and Latin community! I'm reading 3 Hispanic/Latin books that may or may not change, depending on availability at my local library. My API reads for Asian & Pacific Island Heritage Month changed after some were unavailable so this heritage month's reads might go through the same. First up is Velvet Was the Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. This historical fiction thriller set during the '70's in Mexico was all the rave last year, plus its sitting on my TBR so why not finally get to it? It's also a noir so I'm not expecting a happy ending but I hope it's better than Mexican Gothic. My Year in the Middle by Lila Quintero Weaver will be my 1st Middle Grade read as an adult. This story is about an Argentinean tween living in Alabama during the height of segregation; I've never read any stories about non-Black and White POC living in states that practiced segregation, which is why I chose to add it. And finally, Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sánchez. I've heard about this book since I was a child but never read it, so I also added it too. This is a coming of age story about a Mexican teen who's looked down upon by her parents because she's not like her "perfect" sister Olga, however she discovers secrets about Olga after her death which opens up a lot of questions for the protagonist. Which books are on your TBR? #notyourperfectmexicandaughter #myyearinthemiddle #velvetwasthenight #velvetwasthenightnovel #velvetwasthenightsilviamorenogarcia #velvetwasthenightbook #hispanicliterature #hispanicheritagemonth #happyhispanicheritagemonth #hispanicheritagemonth2022 #happyhispanicheritagemonth2022 #latinheritagemonth #latinheritagemonth2022 #happylatinheritagemonth #latinbooks #latinabooks #latinauthors #hispanicbooks #hispanicheritagemonthtbr #latinheritagemonthtbr #hispanicreads #latinreads #latinacharacters #latinacharactersinbooks #ebookstagrammer #bookreviewer #audiobookstagrammer #guyanesegrammer #readersofig #readingcommunity https://www.instagram.com/p/CiiwKiZrMyR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
