2S1 Gvozdika vs M109 Paladin - Which Is Faster ?
The 2S1 Gvozdika (Russian: 2С1 «Гвоздика», "Carnation") is a Soviet self-propelled howitzer based on the MT-LBu multi-purpose chassis, mounting a 122 mm 2A18 howitzer. "2S1" is its GRAU designation. An alternative Russian designation is SAU-122 but in the Russian Army it is commonly known as Gvozdika. The 2S1 is fully amphibious with very little preparation, and once afloat is propelled by its tracks. A variety of track widths are available to allow the 2S1 to operate in snow or swamp conditions. It is NBC protected and has infrared night-vision capability.
Tumblr media
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The M109 is an American 155 mm turreted self-propelled howitzer, first introduced in the early 1960s to replace the M44. It has been upgraded a number of times, most recently to the M109A7. The M109 family is the most common Western indirect-fire support weapon of maneuver brigades of armored and mechanized infantry divisions.
The M109 has a crew of four: the section chief/commander, the driver, the gunner, and the ammunition handler/loader. The chief or gunner aims the cannon left or right (deflection) and up and down (quadrant).

INTENSE BATTLES AS RUSSIAN FORCES BREAK THROUGH UKRAINIAN DEFENSES NEAR ROBOTINO IN ZAPOROZHYE
📹 Ukrainian footage showing the breakthrough of Russian Forces of Ukraine's defensive belt near the village of Robotino in the Zaporozhye sector.
Russian Forces from the Southern Military District and Airborne Forces launch a powerful attack on the Ukrainian defensive belt, pushing more than 2km into Ukrainian-held territory, won through great sacrifice during last year's Ukrainian offensive in the Zaporozhye direction.
In the footage, Ukrainian forces destroy several pieces of Russian equipment and systems, though it does little to slow the Russian advance, with one tank being hit directly, only to storm forward mostly undamaged.
Russian landing forces then disembark from armored vehicles under BMP suppressive fire and secure several enemy positions.
Russian Forces manage to breakthrough into the village of Robotino, capturing positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and capturing or killing many Ukrainian militants.
In another operation, Russian Forces also announced the capture of the village of Pobeda, south of the recently captured city of Marinka in the South Donetsk direction.
“In the Donetsk direction, units of the Southern Group of Forces liberated the village of Pobeda,” the Russian Ministry of Defense said.
According to the Ministry of Defense, Ukrainian forces in the South Donetsk direction lost over 410 servicemembers, one tank, three armored vehicles, five military vehicles, one Polish-made Krab and one Bogdan self-propelled artillery systems, one D-20 howitzer, and a self-propelled Gvozdika artillery system.

9K33 "Osa" (NATO Codename: SA-8 Gecko) 9K33  is a Russian-made  highly mobile, low-altitude, short-range tactical surface-to-air missile  system. "9K33" is its GRAU designation. The development program was  protracted with major redesigns of both the missile and launch platform  required. Extensive range testing of the Osa for the Land Forces was  conducted at a test range in Kazakhstan in 1965 where many of the faults  of the original system were discovered. The modified system was named  Osa-M with most of the individual systems having to be redesigned and  also many of the developing agencies changed. The Russian Army accepted  the OSA-M for service in 1972. Series production of the system began in  1971. The SA-8 Gecko is intended for defense of troops on the march and  in mobile combat, as well as of strategic ground facilities against  airstrikes delivered by manned or unmanned air vehicles flying at low  and medium altitudes. All versions of the SA-8 Gecko feature all-in-one  9A33 transporter erector launcher and radar(TELAR) vehicles which can  detect, track and engage aircraft independently or with the aid of  regimental surveillance radars. 🇷🇺 Graphic of the Russian Airborne Self-Propelled Artillery Battery, equipped with 2S9 Nona-S self-propelled mortars. These are the main artillery for Airborne and Air Assault Regiments (as an 18-gun battalion, 3 batteries), possibly for Airborne Battalions part of Air Assault Brigades (1 battery), and are part of the Airborne divisional artillery (Artillery Regiments). The VDV also make use of D-30 towed 122mm howitzers in brigade and divisional artilleries.
⚔ The structure overall is very similar to a standard self-propelled artillery battery, except with the air droppable Nona-S instead of Msta/Akatsiya/Gvozdika howitzers and 1V119 artillery command vehicles based on BTR-D airborne APC rather than MT-LBu variants. The HQ includes a command vehicle for the Battery Commander (typically primary forward observer in a battery, setting up a command outpost) and Senior Battery Officer (stays with the battery and leads the FDC). The Battery Commander is supported by scouts while the Senior Battery Officer is supported by a fire calculator. The rest of the HQ is more rear echelon oriented, like the Senior Technician, Starshina, and Medical NCO.
⚔ The battery has two firing platoons, each with 3 mortars, and is supported by an ammunition section with 3 trucks.

[Night fiery hell near Avdeevka. The Russian Aerospace Forces launch a massive strike with FAB500s on the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.]
🇷🇺🇺🇦 🚨
💥 UPDATE ON THE RUSSO-UKRAINIAN WAR, EVENTS OF DAY 629💥
General direction:
According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, in the course of the counter-battery warfare, three Polish-made Krab self-propelled artillery systems, two Gvozdika self-propelled artillery systems, and one Grad MLRS were neutralised.
Operational-tactical and Army Aviation, unmanned aerial vehicles, missile troops and artillery of the Group of Forces of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation destroyed one command and observation post of the AFU 79th Airborne Brigade near Antonovka (Donetsk People's Republic), as well as manpower and military hardware in 82 areas.
Air defence units intercepted two HIMARS MLRS projectiles and one U.S.-made JDAM aerial guided bomb.
Moreover, 23 unmanned aerial vehicles of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were shot down near Raigorovka, Lisichansk (Lugansk People's Republic), Lipovoye, Pervomayskoye (Donetsk People's Republic), Novaya Zburyevka, (Kherson region) and Mirnoye (Zaporozhye region).
📊 In total, 534 airplanes and 254 helicopters, 8,904 unmanned aerial vehicles, 441 air defence missile systems, 13,392 tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, 1,184 combat vehicles equipped with MLRS, 7,084 field artillery guns and mortars, as well as 15,253 units of special military equipment have been destroyed during the special military operation.
🔹 Russian Defence Ministry
In the Kupiansk direction:
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, units of the Zapad Group of Forces supported by aviation and artillery repelled eight attacks of the AFU 32nd, 57th, and 67th mechanised brigades near Sinkovka and Zagoruykovka (Kharkov region).
The enemy lost up to 155 Ukrainian troops and two pickup trucks.
Russian Forces were clearing the trenches and assaulting Ukrainian positions in the vicinity of the trench networks east of Ivanivka, with video published by Russian sources showing the Russian operations there.
#source9
Though as Military Summary Channel acknowledged, this for probably the fifth time, and though there's absolutely attritional damage being done to Ukrainian Forces in the region, the Russians have had difficulty holding this area as Ukrainian Forces keep counter-attaking here.
Fighting continues in the vicinity of Pershotravneve, with Russian Forces heavily assaulting the area between Pershotravneve and Petropavlivka.
Ukrainian sources have published countless videos in recent days showing the destruction of Russian armored vehicles and soldiers in this direction with no changes in territory recorded.
In Krasny Liman direction:
According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, units of the Tsentr Group of Forces, helicopters, and artillery repelled six attacks of assault detachments of the AFU 12th Special Operations Brigade near Kuzmino (Lugansk People's Republic).
The enemy losses amounted to up to 210 Ukrainian troops killed and wounded, one Bradley infantry fighting vehicle, three motor vehicles, as well as one U.S.-made M119 Paladin self-propelled artillery system during the day.
According to geolocated video evidence published by Russian sources, Russian Forces were bombing Ukrainian air defenses in the vicinity Nevskoye, Lugansk People's Republic.
#source8
In the Donetsk direction:
According to the Russian Federation's Ministry of Defense, units of the Yug Group of Forces supported by aviation and artillery repelled five attacks of the AFU 22nd and 24th mechanised brigades near Maloilyinovka and Kleshcheyevka (Donetsk People's Republic).
In addition, strikes were delivered at manpower and hardware of the AFU 30th Mechanised Brigade close to Vasyukovka and Kurdyumovka (Donetsk People's Republic).
The enemy losses in this direction amounted to 300 Ukrainian troops killed and wounded, two armoured fighting vehicles, three pickup trucks, and one Msta-B howitzer.
Today, Russian sources published video showing the very heavy bombing of Ukrainian positions inside Avdiivka using FAB500 strikes in the direction of the chemical plant in the northernmost section of Avdiivka. The industrial zone, if you will.
#source2
According to sources on both sides, very heavy Ukrainian counter-attacks persist throughout the Russian-controlled territory east of Stepove.
Sources with Russian Forces published video today showing the very heavily bombing in the north of Avdiivka, on the fortified positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine southwest of the village of Vesele. According to the caption of the video, the bombing took place on Nov. 8th.
#source3
Since then, Russian Forces have been assaulting the area where they had previously been bombing heavily, some sources say progress has been made in that small industrial area southeast of the landfill, however it is expected Ukrainian Forces will counter-attack overnight.
According to Russian news source RYBAR:
In the north, Ukrainian forces, under heavy Russian artillery fire, were compelled to retreat from the village of Petrovskoe (Stepovoe). Currently, the settlement is in a gray area, with Russian Armed Forces units having established a foothold on the eastern outskirts, thereby expanding their zone of control along the railway track.
Progress has also been made on the waste heap side: the Russian army has cleared the treatment facilities southeast of the ash dump of the Avdeevsky coke plant. However, there has been no advance from the commanding heights into the city, nor an assault on the plant itself.
#source4
In the south of Avdiivka:
Russian Forces continue assaulting Ukranian positions in southeast by the far south of Yasynuvatskyy Ln before the highways using tanks and armored vehicles with air and artillery support, video evidence published by Russian sources show.
According to the source:
Southern flank: battles for the southern flank intensified. The advance of the RF Armed Forces in this area is approximately 100-150 m.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces are trying to snap back, but it’s getting worse. Fighting intensified on the south-eastern side of Avdeevka, west of the Yasinovatskaya junction.
There, the fortified areas of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are no worse equipped than in the territory of the coking plant, but the lack of ammunition and losses are gradually taking their toll, due to which this area is defended a little worse and less densely than the rest.
#source5
The important point in the current Russian assault in the south of Avdiivka is to establish control over the heavily fortified positions of Ukrainian Forces in the southern industrial area.
Capturing this area would give Russian Forces access to penetrating fortified barriers between Russian-controlled territory and the residential areas of southern Avdiivka.
Counter-attacks and attempts to bring in reinforcements is expected from Ukrainian Forces in the coming days.
Ukrainian Forces published video showing how they were heavily bombing two Russian artillery systems and one armored vehicle in the vicinity of Vasylivka, to the east of Avdiivka.
#source6
In the Artemovsk Direction:
Heavy fighting continues in the north of Klischiivka, where Russian Forces have made advances in recent days, however, no evidence yet that Russian Forces have entered the village.
The purpose here is to keep Ukrainian Forces engaged in the Artemovsk direction, rather than allowing Ukrainian Forces to concentrate their troops and equipment in Avdiivka.
In the north of Artemovsk:
After a week of heavy fighting south of the Berkhivka Reservoir area, Russian Forces have established control over the fields and trench networks south of the reservoir as Russian Forces work slowly towards Khromove.
Ukrainian Forces were heavily dependent on FPV drones in this area to bomb Russian Forces conducting clearing operations south of Dubovo-Vasylivka and west of Berkhivka, with video showing the successful targeting of a Russian armored vehicle in this area.
#source7
According to some sources, the entire Ukrainian defensive belt in the northern Artemovsk area, consisting of Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Hryhorivka, Bohdanivka, Khromove, down to Ivanivke is at risk of being penetrated by Russian Forces in the coming weeks if the Ukrainian Armed Forces are unable to stabilize the frontlines in this area.
In South Donetsk direction:
According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, units of the Vostok Group of Forces, helicopters, and artillery inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of the AFU 79th Airborne Brigade near Novomikhailovka (Donetsk People's Republic).
In addition, strikes were delivered at manpower and hardware clusters of the AFU 128th Territorial Defence Brigade near Staromayorskoye and 58th Motorised Brigade close to Urozhaynoye (Donetsk People's Republic).
The enemy losses amounted to up to 60 Ukrainian troops, two armoured personnel carriers, two motor vehicles, as well as one Akatsiya self-propelled artillery system.
In Zaporozhye direction:
According to the Russian Federation's Ministry of Defense, units of the Russian Group of Forces supported by aviation and artillery inflicted losses on manpower and hardware clusters of the AFU 33rd Mechanised Brigade near Rabotino (Zaporozhye region).
The enemy losses amounted to up to 75 Ukrainian troops, two armoured fighting vehicles, and two motor vehicles.
In the course of counterbattery warfare, one U.S.-made M777 artillery system, one M-46 towed gun, and one D-30 howitzer were wiped out.
In the Kherson direction:
According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, as a result of artillery and aviation strikes near Antonovka and Shlyakhovoye (Kherson region), the AFU losses amounted to up to 95 Ukrainian troops and four motor vehicles.
Russian Forces continue bombing and shelling the Ukrainian foothold in Krynky as Ukrainian Forces expanded their zone of control to include further sections of the southwest residential areas previously in the grayzone.
Video evidence shows the Russian Forces heavily bombing the area, targeting concentrations of Ukrainian manpower, geolocated to the southwest suburbs of the village.
#source1
Bombing by Russian Forces continues on concentrations of Ukrainian manpower throughout Baryslav, Inzhenerne, Mykilske, and Kherson, up and down towns, cities and fortified positions on and near the river bank.

Business daily Kauppalehti reported that the Crown Bridges (Kruunusillat) project in Helsinki is not just breaking records for being the tallest and longest bridge in Finland, it's also breaking the budget.
In September 2021, Helsinki taxpayers were told that the series of bridges would cost 326 million euros. However, the project's price has risen as construction has progressed over three years.
Contractors YIT and Kreate added index-linked clauses to the contract that would increase the budget if external factors inflated prices.
According to information obtained by KL, the indices have increased the original contract amount of 326 million euros by "several tens of millions" of euros.
Taxpayers have yet to see how dramatically the cost of building the bridge has risen, KL wrote.
"The original contract price for the bridge was linked to three different indices in the contract, so the increase in construction costs will have an impact. The contract price has increased significantly," Aleksi Laine, executive vice president of YIT's infrastructure segment, told KL.
The 10km project includes one 1.2km bridge projected to be ready by 2026 with tram service beginning in 2027. It was originally controversial, as it has tram tracks and space for cyclists, but no road for private cars.
Scam scheme
Tabloid Iltalehti noted a new scamming method via online marketplaces that the police are warning the public about.
In this scam, criminals have emailed a seller who listed a product on a website like Tori.fi or Facebook Marketplace under their real name. The fraudster then manages to guess the seller's personal email address and bypasses the website's own communication channels.
The scammer sends an email saying that they are willing to buy the product for sale, and sends a link to a scam website that phishes payment card and online banking details.
Websites like Tori forbid sellers and buyers from sending links, in an effort to help prevent these types of scams. However, the fraudsters take advantage of the sellers' ignorance of the platforms and circumvent the safeguards altogether.
IL added that various delivery scams are also circulating in online marketplaces. Scammers have sent messages to sellers asking them to use a specific delivery service to send a product and to click on a suspicious link.
From East Germany to Finland to Ukraine
Helsingin Sanomat wrote that a self-propelled howitzer previously belonging to the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) was spotted in a Ukrainian frontline video posted on the social media website X. The video was first reported by the military magazine Suomensotilas and is noteworthy because Finland has not disclosed much of the contents of its Ukrainian military aid packages to the public.
According to Suomensotilas, the self-propelled howitzer seen in the video can be identified as Finnish in origin by the heat shield built around the exhaust pipe and the muzzle velocity radar mount on top of the gun barrel.
In Finland, these self-propelled howitzers are known as the 122 PSH 74, which means they have a 122 mm barrel. It is a howitzer, or artillery gun, mounted on a tracked platform, used in Finland by mechanised and motorised combat units.
Tumblr media
However, the self-propelled howitzer in question is originally a Soviet one. In Russia, the tracked vehicle is known as the 2S1 'Gvozdika'. They came into service in the Soviet Union in the 1970s.
In Finland, these pieces of military hardware were acquired in 1992 and 1994 from Germany, which was selling off its old East German surplus.
