throwback thursday
I missed last week’s. Anyway, here’s something short and silly. Writing this was what led to my “Duo vs Nature” headcanon hehe. :) It was supposed to be for a 2009 gw_dark prompt “Duo and tentacles” but obviously it didn’t end up being very dark, so.
It’s set just before Episode 2.
It was darker than space down here; no stars, just inky blackness in every direction. It was a tempting thought to switch on his outside headlights, just to see what was out there -- it was creeping him out a little, his Gundam powered down and all that cold, black water just pressing in on them. But the time for attracting attention would be later; right now he just had to lie low and let OZ lead him to their (soon to be his) prize…if they ever showed up, that is. He fidgeted, and tried not to think about what would happen if Deathscythe were suddenly to spring a leak.
Instinct made the back of his neck tingle. Had he just moved? He strained forward in his seat, trying to see something -- anything -- but it was impossible. The sensors picked up nothing -- no trace of metal, no Alliance craft in the area, so, presumably, no danger. But sitting there in the dark, listening to his breath echo, Duo was sure that something wasn’t right.
Aw, what the hell. There was no sign of the Alliance yet. Just to set his mind at ease.
He tapped the keyboard in front of him, bringing the system out of hibernation and releasing just the tiniest possible glow…
Duo choked on a scream.
There was a giant fucking eye looking right at him!
"What the hell—What the hell is that thing?!"
With it right in his face like that it was hard to remember that his viewscreen was not a window, that he could not in fact be seen, could safely observe at his leisure. But he kept reminding himself, and after the adrenaline shock wore off it didn't take him long to notice the tentacles -- the giant fucking tentacles feeling up his 'Scythe! -- and put two and two together. It was a squid. A giant fucking squid.
"Get offa me ya creep!" he shouted at it, gave his Gundam just enough juice to move its hand, try to push the monstrous thing away. No such luck. The ugly beast just wound its nasty body round his hand and stayed put. Duo felt sick. Fifteen years living in outer space and he'd never seen an alien. Not even a week spent on Earth and here he was being confronted by the most inhuman…thing…he could imagine.
Movement to his right! Was it OZ? Had he been detected?
He flinched into readiness as well as he could with a giant bag of guts and slimy tentacles wrapped around his Gundam, but realized even as he did so that the approaching object was a) not showing on his sensors and b) moving way too fast to be a mobile suit on patrol.
For the second time in as many minutes his heart jumped to his throat and he choked on nothing but air.
The thing was big -- like mobile suit big! -- but it was alive! -- and it was heading -- straight -- at -- him!
This was so not his day.
He put up his free arm in a defensive block just as the whale rammed him, sending his whole Gundam into a slow-motion fall, the cockpit juddering and shaking around him.
That was it. No more Mr Nice Guy. Duo didn’t care if these things were innocent baby puppies, he didn’t care if they were space aliens, he was done letting them mess around with him and his suit. It was time for them to meet their maker.
He groped for his thermal scythe even as he struggled to maneuver himself upright in the unfamiliar environment. That damn squid had propelled itself away from him during his fall so he didn't have the pleasure of crushing it with the fist it had so gleefully been sucking on -- but he could see it, the creepy bastard, squirting through the water with practically supernatural speed.
And then he saw that whale coming round for a second sweep -- and then -- CHOMP.
Duo gaped, weapon forgotten in his hand.
Bits of tentacle floated past him on the current.
The whale swam off. He watched it go until it disappeared, and then continued staring for a while just in case it decided to come back. But apparently dinner was enough. Finally, shrugging, he powered down his Gundam once again and went back to waiting for OZ to come.
This planet was fucking weird.

throwback thursday again
Another 2009 gw_dark prompt - the first and only one I ever successfully completed on time and posted to the comm! “Noin & technology.” It’s super short, but it probably remains one of my faves from what I’ve written? I was always a bit disappointed more people didn’t read it haha. Oh well. What can ya do except post it to throwback thursday, eh?? :D
This was, btw, the seed that eventually turned into my Noin/Trowa fic, which eventually turned into this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072TMQN51
Despite a life spent on Earth, Noin was well-versed in the history of the space-colonies -- had spent much of her life, in fact, somewhat in love with the idea of them. She knew that two hundred years ago, when the first mad, brilliant pioneers began stretching science to achieve the practicalities of life in outer space, they had resurrected a term from an ancient nation’s past: manifest destiny.
It is mankind’s destiny to live among the stars.
From beginnings riddled with failure, from financial scandals and budgets hugely overdrawn, to the price paid in blood by engineers and laborers during the colonies’ construction and by civilians following their launch, humanity had indeed carved out a place for itself outside the safety of Earth’s atmosphere. Noin had spent her life seeing in the space colonies lessons about humanity’s ability to overcome the worst in its nature and achieve its best. She had seen hope.
But Mars… Mars was different.
The whole planet was telling them No.
It was not that she failed to see the political sense of Relena’s conception of the project -- on the contrary, a common goal large enough to unite the minds of the people was, she thought, admirable. A fresh start full of idealism, necessary.
But attempting to ground that start on a planet with warfare in its very name, with Fear and Dread looking down on the people from the sky -- where, indeed, the process of making a world fit for human habitation required a violence all too reminiscent of a battle, that was a cruel irony. Perhaps that was why Zechs chose it for his home.
“It’s early days, Noin,” he was fond of telling her. He could see she was depressed, perhaps felt guilty, responsible for her being here.
“I know,” she would respond, obliged in turn to reassure him that her presence was her choice.
She tried to reassure herself by thinking of the colonies, the doubts and outrages and injustices so many must have suffered during their birth, simply forgotten by virtue of being in the past, erased by clever politicians and historians with agendas to sell. But she couldn’t help but feel the differences, the differences that made her doubt.
When mankind first launched itself into outer space, it was building something out of nothing, a vacuum. It was not fighting against a planet that did not want to be tamed. It was the creation she admired, the destruction she deplored. Terraformation reminded her of a more ancient, more sinister colonization, one that felt all too imperialistic and reeked like Romefeller.
All this and, God, they hadn’t even landed yet. A permanent ground base was years in the future yet; for now the terraformation team remained space-bound, with the exception of frequent one- and two-man expeditions to the planet to monitor progress of the seeded atmosphere, the magnetization process at the poles, the great changes demanded of this angry planet with its solar radiation, its wild dust storms, its freezing winds.
Noin had been to Antarctica, and she had to wonder: If people had yet failed to conquer that final outpost of their own planet, how would they ever survive even the tamest tract of Martian soil? Humanity had become accustomed to beating all forms of life into submission, but Mars, like Antarctica, was dead. What kind of vanity was it to believe they could bring it to life? What kind of arrogance to claim it as their right?
When Noin took control of one of the mobile probes and saw barren red dirt stretching away from her in every direction, and when she looked up at the dull, dirt-colored sky, she felt her wrongness here more keenly than she ever did in space. And she knew, she knew that mankind’s only destiny here was to lose.
