Ribbons 101- Combining Prints

I often get asked how I know which ribbons to put together when making bows. I have always loved combining prints that most people wouldn’t think of putting together. My favorite trick is to add a contrast ribbon to the mix as well. This jazzes your bow up and gives it an interesting twist. As you can see in the sample image, my contrast ribbon is the white zebra stripe printed ribbon. See how the prints differ but somehow still seem to go great together?

Here are a few easy rules to help you put print on print and have your project look really cohesive.

Choose your main printed ribbon that will be the dominant part of your bow. In our sample, I have chosen the hot pink 1.5" ribbon with apple green dots as my main ribbon.

If you have two or more colors in your main ribbon, find other ribbons that have some of the same colors in them. For example, since my main ribbon has apple green dots, I have chosen another dotted 1.5" ribbon that has the apple green in it too.

I have a combination of 4 different ribbons. If I chose only dots as my print for all 4 ribbons, it would get boring and be too much. So, to change it up a little, I added a 7/8" striped ribbon that has both the hot pink and the apple green in it. It also has a bit of orange in it down the center, which really gives it a neat dynamic. Most people might think that orange and hot pink would clash, but as you can see, they go together nicely when one of them is dominant and the other is just a minimal secondary color.

Finally, I have chosen to spice it up by adding a contrast ribbon that is white with black zebra stripes. If you are not sure about what colors to add as a contrast, always choose a black and white print. Zebra stripes are my go-to contrast print because it seems like everything goes well with it, just like blue jeans go well with any shirt!

If you stick to these few easy tips, you will not go wrong when matching up prints! The most important thing to remember is to have fun and go with your instincts!
