This translation is from 薄桜鬼 遊戯録弐 秋の新選組大運動会！which was originally published in the booklet that looks like the following image.

This is probably one of my favourite misc stories... because it shows how Saito is the best boi.

No, I will not be accept any arguments to that statement. hahaha. i shalt abuse my power as a translator and focus on Saito content if anyone dares to argue otherwise (maybe. not really. who knows hahaha. perhaps i really am that petty...)!

anyway, this is the first part of this silly story... enjoy!

Hakuoki Yuugiroku 2 - 《Autumn Shinsengumi Sports Day!》—— Opening Ceremony?

Autumn of book reading, autumn of appetite, and also ——the autumn of sports.

To express the joy of finally getting through the hottest season of the year, the trees in Kyoto became brightly coloured, and it formally became autumn soon after.

Looking at the members divided into two teams by red and white headbands, the chief of the Shinsengumi, Kondou Isami, made an announcement in a loud voice in a courtyard of Nishi Hongan-ji.

Kondou: "Good, everyone's here…. Then I announce that the start of the Shinsengumi Sports Meet is officially open!"

Hijikata: "Kondou-san is really something, all of a sudden he's talking about holding a sports meet… even if it's on a whim, it needs to be done in moderation."

Saito: "But Vice-Commander, I believe that this is a good opportunity to relax everyone's tense nerves after such a scorching summer."

Harada: "Furthermore, the winners get to make a wish, right? What sort of wish should I make…"

Hijikata, Saito, and Harada, who each had headbands on their heads that were as scarlet as red maple leaves, were discussing——

Heisuke: "How can you be talking as if you've already won, Sano-san! We're not going to lose to the red team!"

Souji: "By the way, Shinpat-san, have you already decided what prize you want if you win?"

Shinpachi" Of course it's going to be sake!"

Heisuke and Okita, who had pure white bandanas, like white clouds, on their heads, and also Shinpachi, responded.

Seeing how the two sides already seemed to have sparks colliding between them before the competition started, Kondou nodded with satisfaction.

Kondou "Hmhm, it seems that everyone's quite motivated, that's wonderful. Then, without further delay, let's start the first competition——"

Kazama: "——Hold a moment!"

Hijikata: "Hm?"

Kazama: "Are you saying the winner gets what they want? I heard that just now with my own ears."

Hijikata: "Do-Don't tell me this arrogant voice is…"

There was no one else who was this arrogant and spoke with such an egotistical tone, apart from a certain someone.

Hijikata and the others quickly looked around, and the sight of three people, standing with their backs to the sun, caught their eyes.

Kazama: "Hmph. With all these wild dogs gathering, I thought something was happening…"

Hijikata "Kazama and Amagiri, Shiranui... you bastards, what the hell are you doing here!"

Kazama: "What the hell are you doing here? This pack of wild dogs really aren't able to discern facial expressions to figure out the other party's intentions. Could it be that you aren't even able to see this?"

Saito: "I don't want to be told by you about not understanding someone's intentions from their body language…"

Souji: "I mean, you guys are being hindrances, so why don't get out of the way? You're being too much of a hindrance."

As Saito and Souji glared at him, Kazama paid them no attention, as if nothing had happened.

On the side, Amagiri and Shiranui sighed and took a step forward to translate Kazama's words, which had only been half-spoken.

Amagiri: "Actually that is the case. Simply put, we stopped by while scouting out nearby…"

Shiranui: "That guy Kazama was saying "Isn't this the best time to show off the gap in abilities between me and the Shinsengumi in front of my wife". What a pain."

Harada: "Hey. That's to say, you three want to participate in this sports meet?"

Heisuke: "What a joke! Why obligation do we have to compete with you guys!"

Harada scratched his head while Heisuke puffed up his cheeks.

Then Shiranui shook his head impatiently and spoke earnestly.

Shiranui: I got it, I got it. This should be fine, if we come in last, we will never approach Yukimura Chizuru again, what do you guys think?"

Kazama: "What!? Shiranui, you bastard, making such a statement without permission..."

Shiranui: "What? I mean, as long as we win, it'll be fine. Or are you saying that a certain leader of an oni clan isn't confident that they can win?"

Kazama: "Hmph, what a stupid thing to say. As if I could lose to some insignificant humans. There isn't even a one in ten thousand chance of that happening."

Amagiri: "….That's how it is. What do you all think? Everyone from the Shinsengumi. If this is how it will be, bloodshed can be avoided. I believe that this is beneficial to both sides."

Hijikata: "......A word once spoken cannot be taken back. If you lose, you won't go looking around for excuses, will you?

Kondou: "Ah, if Toshi agrees, the I won't disagree. In that case, I officially approve of your team now!"

With that, the members of the third team, the oni team joined in, and the Shinsengumi sports meet finally kicked off after a number of twists and turns before the games officially began——

Exploring videos that replace Touken Ranbu's music with Hakuoki's Hanamaru version 🌸🌸🌸

Personally, I found that some of Aika's songs fit some of the Hanamaru endings better than the original ones. Since some of the imagery of the EDs is so melancholic while the song is so upbeat just didn't seem to fit very well together

My personal favorites are the Toshirou siblings, Mikazuki's and Kashuu, and Yasusada's ED.

The song in the Toushirou siblings' ending fits with the imagery really well and highlights really well how much the siblings miss Ichi-nii.

The song for Mikazuki's ending is called Sora no Kagami meaning "Mirror of the Sky" or "Sky's Mirror". There is a lot of reflection and night sky imagery in Mikazuki's ending and it honestly fits so perfectly together. 🌙

The song for Kashuu and Yasusada's ending talks about destiny and being born to meet. Souji in Tsukikage talks about destined swords for a samurai and how he wanted Yasusada because he felt that Yasusada was his destined sword. Also when the music swells into that guitar rift and shows Yasusada standing proud with the sakura petals falling around him, leaves such an impact. ❤

also yeah...the person who made the video didn't know how to edit out the Tourabu OST during the scene where they fight the Keiibishi before replacing it with the Hakuouki OST. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ eh, it is what it is

Hakuōki Shinkai Ginsei no Shou is the newest game in the Hakuouki series, and the second fandisk to Hakuōki Shinkai.  Images/headers above are from the official website (c) IF/DF

Hello! I have a request can you tell me which of hakuouki games are released in english and on which platform and and which are in japanese?(since you are an expert on hakuouki games I thought I should ask you) Thank you

The Hakuoki Wikipedia listing actually has a rather nice list with all of this information, though I know it can be a little confusing to look at, it’s pretty accurate. 

There was also a really nice post floating around about 2-3 years ago that specified what English games related to which Japanese titles but for the life of me I can’t find it and it’s probably buried somewhere in my mess of a blog. Anyway, I’m going to try to recall what I remember, so here’s what we have:

Hakuōki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom 

Localized version of Hakuouki: Shinsengumi Kitan, which was released for the PlayStation Portable on February 14, 2012.

Hakuōki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi 

Localized version of Hakuouki: Bakumatsu Musouroku, which was released for the PlayStation Portable on February 19, 2013.

Hakuōki: Memories of the Shinsengumi 

Localized version of Hakuouki: Zuisouroku, which was released for the Nintendo 3DS on September 19, 2013.

Hakuōki: Stories of the Shinsengumi 

Localized version of Hakuouki: Junsouroku, which was released for the PlayStation 3 on May 6, 2014. 

Note: Junsouroku is the combination of Shinsengumi Kitan and Zuisouroku.

Hakuōki: Kyoto Winds

Localized version of Hakuouki Shinkai: Kaze no Shou which was only released on PlayStation Vita on May 15, 2017.

All dates listed are North American release dates, I apologize I’m not certain on when all the games were released in Europe outside of Kyoto Winds.

Looking at all the Japanese releases is probably the most confusing thing though so it’s no wonder people get lost. Even I still haven’t gotten it all down honestly (so please don’t call me an expert ^^;;; I’m not even close), but you have to keep in mind things have been repackaged, combined, and/or ported to different systems frequently since Hakuouki first debuted in 2008. And each time they’ve tried to add a little something new to entice fans into buying the new versions, but at this point if you have a Vita you have access to basically everything you need either English or Japanese, as far as physical copies (not downloads) go.

The only games we don’t have localized are Hakuouki: Reimeiroku, which is the prequel game featuring Ibuki Ryuunosuke and his experiences with the Shinsengumi before they were the Shinsengumi, and one I would personally love to see localized. Along with the three Yuugiroku games which aren’t really so much story as a collection of mini-games and challenges to unlock festival related events and CGs. Then there’s Hakuouki SSL ~sweet school life~ which is completely AU and has no bearing on the main story.

Of course! I have the 2016 PS Vita version of Yuugiroku, and will get right on it after the rest of the Souma/Sakamoto/Iba CGs are posted (hopefully in the next few days - life happened :( .. ). Kazama’s are really cute in this one!

Hakuoki Yuugiroku 2 - 《Autumn Shinsengumi Sports Day!》—— The First Event: The Borrowing Items Race

Forgot to this mention last time, but this story is split into 5 segments....

Also, some of the lines I saved are missing a speaker, which likely meant that the original tl I saw was colour-coated (that person did that a lot, which usually meant that I had to manually type in who was saying what, though I didn't always do that for everything). I suppose I'll mark the lines I'm not entirely sure about with "[?]"s, though that only happens once in this post, and I'm pretty sure it's fine (it costs too much to double check since that would involve purchasing the booklet and I don't want to do that when I think what I have is more than enough).

Hakuoki Yuugiroku 2 - 《Autumn Shinsengumi Sports Day!》—— The First Event: Borrowing Items Race

In front of the starting line, three men representing each of the teams, stood next to each other.

There was still a little bit of time left before the race began. A golden headband fluttered in the wind, and Kazama revealed a confident smile, as if victory was already in his grasp, to Saito and Heisuke, who were standing next to each other.

Kazama: "Listen, you two are only here to contrast my gallant demeanour that I'll be revealing before my wife. Just put in some effort while you struggle onward."

Heisuke: ""How many times does it have to be said before you can understand? We're all telling you that Chizuru isn't your wife!"

Saito: "Speaking of which, in regards to what has and has not been exposed, Yukimura isn't present because she's a member of the relief team today."

Heisuke[?]: "Whatever you say to this man will be a waste of energy."

Heisuke and Saito weakly sighed. At that moment, Kondou's powerful voice echoed through the sky.

Kondou: "Alright, is everyone ready? Then the first event, the 【Borrowing Items Race】——begins now!"

The moment the signal was given, Saito and Heisuke ran forward like a gust of wind, while Kazama took unhurried steps on the ground.

Shortly after, several slips of paper that had been placed on the ground caught the eyes of the three of them.

Kazama "Hm. What is this? Hey, you two, explain this to me."

Saito: "You really didn't listen to any of the competition rules… the first person to obtain the item written down on their slip of paper wins."

Heisuke: Then hurry up and take a look, I'll be choosing this note! Hm, let's see, let's see… Chi-【Chizuru】!?"

Saito: "Then mine is… uh? Wh-Why is this item…!"

Kazama: Hmph, it appears that you've been met with bullshit [the literal tl of the noun here is canine excrement aka dog shit]. Then, upon examining my note, this is…"

——Inside the first aid room that was prepared for the sports meet, steam slowly rose from some boiling water.

Chizuru, who was taking on the responsibilities of an emergency relief member, was relaxing, and took a sip of tea and let out a sigh of relief.

Yukimura: "It would be great if no one comes to the first aid room. I hope that everyone doesn't get hurt because they're trying to show off too much…"

While she quietly talked to herself, and listened carefully, she suddenly heard a racket in the corridor.

Chizuru heard the sound of footsteps getting closer and closer, and looked incredulously at the source of the sound.

Heisuke: "Oh, she's here. Hey——Chizuru!"

Yukimura: "Heisuke-kun? What's wrong, are you injured...?"

Heisuke: "No, I haven't been hurt. Come with me… uh, coff!?"

Kazama: bastard… To actually hit on my wife while ignoring me, how outrageous. My wife, come with me. Your future husband needs your help."

Yukimura: "Huh? W-Why is Kazama-san....!?"

Heisuke: "What are you doing, Kazama! Why are you following me!"

Kazama: "A rhetorical question. My note read 【someone who admires you】. My wife is naturally the perfect choice."

Heisuke: "There is no one in the world that admires you!"

Yukimura: "Th-The two of you, wait, please don't fight in the infirmary…!"

What was happening in this situation. Chizuru, who had no idea what was going on, looked in horror as the two were pinching each other's cheeks.

At this time, someone suddenly quietly pulled Chizuru over from the side.

Saito: "Yukimura."

Yukimura: "Eh... Saito-san?"

Saito: "Hurry, come with me right now."

Yukimura: "Uh, yes...."

Kondou: "——That's the end of this match! The winner is Saito-kun of the red team!" [tl was missing the -kun so I added that in]

Under the crisp autumn sky, as the name of the winner resounded through the sky. Heisuke and Kazama glared indignantly at Saito, who had reaped the benefits of a fisherman [in reference to the clam fighting against a snipe or a sandpiper proverb, where the fisherman catches both and profits from the fighting].

Heisuke: "You're too cunning, Hajime-kun! You actually took advantage of our fighting to secretly take Chizuru away!"

Saito: "There was nothing cunning about it. I merely accomplished my task, that's all."

Kazama: "Although I am upset that you won, I am still curious about what your slip of paper said."

Kazama then quickly snatched Saito's note, and opened it up to the sunlight.

Seeing the words 【beautiful woman】 arranged before him, Saito immediately turned his face away.

Kazama: "You bastard, what the hell is going on?"

Saito: "Uh, no, that was, uh. It goes without saying that there's only one woman at headquarters..."

Kazama: "Ah. Meaning you used that to eliminate other potential targets. That means to say that the one being described here is not necessarily my wife."

Saito: "I, I didn't mean it like that! Uh..."

Yukimura: “…………？”

Listening to the above conversation, Chizuru, who was completely confused about the circumstances of what was going on, showed a puzzled expression.

ugh i hate summer. ive been extremely unmotivated for a while because of the heat... and that's just not something i can help given how badly i do in hot weather.

anyway, this is the third part! also it's of six not five parts! kept missing the "Awards Ceremony?" section which follows 2 events.

Hakuoki Yuugiroku 2 - 《Autumn Shinsengumi Sports Day!》——Lunch Break

Exercising is a way to promote relationships between people, who was it that said this sentence——

Yukimura: "Everyone on the white team, please eat more."

Shinpachi: "Oh, thank you, Chizuru-chan!"

The first event was over, and it was now time for an hour's break.

In a corner of headquarters, Chizuru's homemade bento boxes had been set in an area where there wasn't a lot of space, and Nagakura and Heisuke were hurriedly reaching out with their chopsticks.

Heisuke: "Hehe, meals taste better after moving/exercising!"

Shinpachi: "Whether you were exercising or not, you're ashamed to say that you lost."

Heisuke: "Uh… I-It's all that bastard, Kazama's fault for block me…."

Shinpachi: "Your excuse totally sucks, Heisuke." In order to make you properly reflect, this egg shall be dedicated to me!"

Heisuke: "Th-This and that don't have anything to do with each other!"

Souji: "Ah, Chizuru-chan. Leave those two alone, can you get me a cup of tea?"

Seeing how Okita and Nagaura were bullying Heisuke, Chizuru forced a smile as she handed over the hot tea.

Then, she walked over and delivered the bento boxes to the red team, who were sitting beneath a sakura tree/some sakura trees.

Yukimura: "Harada-san, Hijikata-san, and Saito-san, please eat slowly."

Harada: "Oh my, this looks delicious. I won't be holding back."

Hijikata: "However you elegantly won the first competition, Saito. It doesn't matter if we lose to the white team, but losing to that group of oni would be completely unacceptable."

Saito: "Half of that was due to Heisuke and Kazama self-destrucgint… In short, if Harada wins the next competition, victory for our team will be assured."

Harada: "Alright, leave it to me. Although I don't know what sort of competition it will be, I won't lose."

Harada and the others talked cheerfully laughed while they focused on finishing off the meals in their bento boxes.

Grilled fish, and dry roasted veggies…. While watching the three people eating their food, Chizuru suddenly her head and pointed into the distance and then spoke.

Yukimura: "Speaking of which, um, Hijikata-san. Over there..."

Hijikata" Leave it alone."

Yukimura: "But..."

Hijikata: "Listen to me, and leave it alone."

Kazama?: "Nori grilled fish/Nori wrapped fish... [? literally seaweed boiled or grilled fish. the word here is identical to the one before Chizuru's "Speaking of which..."]"

Shiranui?: "Kamaboko and fried eggs..."

Kazama?: "Fried bean tempura... [or this might be fried beans and tempura.]"

Shiranui?: “…………”

Kazama?: “…………”

Amagiri: "Oh, What's wrong, Kazama, Shiranui? Don't you want to eat?"

Shiranui: "....No, I was just thinking, although our food is more luxurious compared to what the humans have, why do I feel that we've somehow lost..."

There was an absolute difference between what a girl personally cooked and not. Eating from the bento that Amagiri poured his heart's blood into, Shiranui's gaze shifted to their neighbours, where they had been noisy just now.

Kazama: "Unhand me, Amagiri…! My wife's homemade cooking is waiting for me!"

Amagiri: "Give it up, Kazama. I feel that you must learn the skill of retrating retreating sometimes."

Shiranui: "This man is still so annoying…."

Turning his gaze away from Kazama who was being supressed/pressed down, Shiranui leisurely put boiled beans into his mouth by himself.

Hakuoki Yuugiroku 2 - 《Autumn Shinsengumi Sports Day!》—— The Second Event: Manjū Eating Competition

Shinpachi: "Uoah——I'm stuffed! In this state, I'm ready for the next competition, which I will naturally be winning!"

Harada: "That said, you ate too much, Shinpachi. You even took portions from Heisuke and Souji."

After he finished eating a delicious lunch, he touched his stomach, which was bursting.

Harada and Nagakura, after fully satisfying their appetites, were slapping their bellies to prepare for the next match, and then stood up.

Harada: "Alright, let's go, Shinpachi. The next match is our turn——"

Sannan: "——Ah, Harada-kun, Nagakura-kun, please wait a moment. If you don't mind, please eat this."

Sannan smiled as he handed both of them fragrant and soft manjūs.

Seeing the fragrant manjūs, Nagakura's eyes lit up.

Shinpachi: "Oh, this is the after-meal dessert!"

Harada: "Pardon me, Sannnan-san. I won't hold back."

Sannan: "Hehe, I'm honoured that you both feel so happy eating. So how about eating another one?"

Shinpachi: "Hm? Of course I'd be happy to… but it's really strange that Sannan-san's in such a good mood today."

Sannan: "Is that so? Then since I'm in a good mood, i've give you both another one."

Harada: "Ah, uh, but if I have another..."

Sannan: "Two, three, four, five..."

Shinpachi: "Wa-Wait! Please wait, Sannan-san!"

Nagakura hurriedly spoke to stop him, but it was too late. Sannan ignored the two's attempts to stop him, and brought one manjū out after the other.

The other party's behaviour was completely unstoppable, and in an instant, the two could only a see a mountain of manjū in front of them.

Harada: "H-Hey, Sannan-san, no matter how you put it, isn't this too many…?"

Sannan: "No, no, you don't need to hold back. In any case, this is the next competition——【Manjū Eating Competition】".

Both: "......What?"

The two looked in the direction the smiling Sannan was pointing towards, and saw Amagiri seated in front of an equally huge pile of manjū, silently eating them in large mouthfuls.

Sannan: "Oya, you two have already eaten a lot."

Harada: "Wh-Wh-What...!"

Shinpachi:"Wa-Wait! Why should people be eating manjūs right after they've finished eating! This is absolutely not normal!"

Sannan: "Hehe, this is a special medicine to deal with those who always steal food from other people's bowls. In any case, both of you, please do your best."

After saying what he wanted, Sannan turned around and immediately left.

Besides, although the taste of the manjū wasn't bad, but regardless of the number eaten, it was only natural to be disgusted by only eating manjū.

*long T/N: So... I'm not entirely sure what this "空签" is in the text here, and I don't know of any English words that would be appropriate when the first Chinese word can mean "empty / air / sky / in vain" while the next one can mean "visa/ inscribed bamboo stick (used in divination, gambling, drawing lots etc) / small wood sliver / label / tag"

After saying that, Sannan turned away and left again.

Squinting at the miserable Nagakura whose soul already seemed to have departed out of his mouth, Harada and Amagiri were dumbstruck as they stared at each other for a while.

——Incidentally, the competition ended with Amagiri's victory, who still continued to eat with his dignity as an oni [not entirely sure about this the word for 'demon' can also mean 'ghost' so this could possibly be interpreted as '...eat with a ghostly figure', which could mean that he was really not doing well, but I think what I put is fine].

Just in case, manjū are steamed sweet buns with some sort of filling inside.... and I have no idea how the word should be treated for its plural form.

Also I feel that Amagiri would think that Shinpachi and Harada are insanely normal compared to Kazama and Shiranui... though Sannan's in a league of his own.

Hakuoki Yuugiroku 2 - 《Autumn Shinsengumi Sports Day!》——Closing Ceremony?

I apparently have bad allergies of some sort that causes irritation in my eyes according to my optometrist... also Toronto Fan Expo's this week so expect me to not respond to messages in a timely manner.

Anyway, here's the last part of this story! I mention what I'll probably translate next in the notes.

Hakuoki Yuugiroku 2 - 《Autumn Shinsengumi Sports Day!》——Closing Ceremony?

The quiet fall of night gradually erased the traces of the fierce fighting from the day.

After the matches were over, Chizuru, who had finished tallying the scores, turned towards Kondou and spoke.

Yukimura: "Kondou-san, please look at this. Although the results has been decided, this…"

Kondou: "……Oh." It appears that each team has the same score? This is completely unexpected."

As a result of the competition, the three teams of red, white and oni, had all tied. Kondou, who was serving as the referee, crossed his arms and contemplated for a moment before slapping his palms.

Kondou: "Oh, since the competition ended in a tie, there's no way around it. There's no need to distribute prizes…!"

Heisuke: "Wa-Wait a sec, Kondou-san! How can there we not get prizes after working so hard!"

Shinpachi: "That's right, that's right, we put in a lot of sweat!"

Heisuke and Nagakura made a noisy argument in protest. Seeing this, Kondou had an embarrassed at this breakdown, and finally shook his head gently and compromised.

Kondou: "Oh, I'm a man too! Even if I have to pay out of my own pocket, I have fill everyone's wishes! Yukimura-kun, help me collect everyone's wishes!"

Nagakura: "I said it at the start, of course it's sake! I don't want the cheap ones that I normally drink, I want to drink good sake!"

Yukimura: "Okay, then we'll prepare some good sake for you to drink later! Um, then Amagiri-san..."

Amagiri: "I also have no desires. If insisted upon, then I hope that Kazama can become a bit more calm."

Yukimura: "That's not something that I can accomplish….. Next, um, is Kazama-san's turn…"

With a face full of worry/horror, Chizuru looked at Kazama.

Kazama revealed a wicked expression that was difficult to describe in words, and spoke with a crooked mouth.

Kazama: "Then allow my wife to spare a day for a tryst with me. I originally wanted you to hand her back over, so you should thank me for being so magnanimous."

Yukimura: "Tryst……. uh, ehh!?"

Souji: "Put your hands up——Chizuru-chan. My wish is to have that oni's babbling nonsense made into a scroll then thrown away."

Yuimura: "Th-Thrown away...?"

Saito: "Then give me the right to be Yukimura's bodyguard for a day."

Yukimura: Saito-san is going to be my bodyguard....?"

Heisuke: "Ah, you're too cunning, Hajime-kun! I was just about to say that!"

Yukimura: "He-Heisuke-kun, you too!?"

Harada: "Then let's just go take turns. That is to say, schedule Saito for the morning, Heisuke in the afternoon, and my turn in the evening. Please arrange it like this, Chizuru."

Hakuoki Drama CD Book Volume 6 Kazama

this is likely going to be my last hakuoki translation for the year. next month i mostly plan to focus on subtitling, getting a start on filling up my queue with yuugiroku content, and hopefully catching up to the deemo manga raws... 

also.... hakumyu sannan-hen. really? 

I know he’s popular, but i rank sannan below souji and heisuke... and as i’ve still yet to watch okita-hen (most i’ve seen is certain clips) and toudou-hen, i don’t know if i’ll be interested in watching sannan’s route. 

in my defence, i did saito’s route first (sannan betraying the Shinsengumi and I don’t like traitors), harada’s second (sannan being creepy because of him wanting chizuru’s blood), and then hijikata’s route (i rarely do the ‘official route’ first). lol. i can’t help that i don’t like him. hahahahaha. suppose this just means i’m more likely to look at getting live 3.

Hakuoki Yuugiroku 2 - Hijikata Chapter 7

Last week, I was thinking that if i wanted to be terrible... I could have changed the password of my other blog to the name of my dad’s old comic book store. It was actually in an old issue of the X-men (from Chris Claremont’s run!)... but it’s such an inside joke that I sincerely doubt that anyone would be able to tell what sort of store it was from the name alone if they saw it.

Lol.

Admittedly, I can’t deny that prospect of being unnecessarily mean in a super petty way doesn’t sound appealing at times.... Also, if I didn’t skim through the ova last week, I would probably be under the impression that Souji sniffing a cat is pretty much the only major thing that happened in it hahaha (okay there was also how i still haven’t any mention of shiranui being in the new ova anywhere and i kinda think that’s a bit disappointing).

Hakuoki Yuugiroku 2 - Hijikata Chapter 7

Beneath the string/cord that Hijikata-san had in his hand, a transparent glass bowl gently swayed. 

A brightly coloured goldfish was calmly swimming inside the glass that had been filled with water. 

My eyes were drawn to the goldfish's beauty/beauty within the fishbowl, and I looked up towards Hijikata-san.

Yukimura: We've already patrolled the entire area... From what I’ve seen, it doesn’t  seem like anything unusual occurred.

Hijikata: Yeah.

Although it had been a while since the start of the festival, no fights/disputes had broken out, and we hadn’t found any suspicious people.

Hijikata-san likely felt that it was time to go back so he lightly nodded as he looked at me.

Hijikata: It's about time, we should head back.

Yukimura: Huh/Ah....

Hijikata: What's wrong. Haven't you played enough?

Yukimura: N-No, that isn’t the case. 

If possible, I had hoped that I would be able to continue going about the festival with Hijikata-san, but I couldn't allow myself to cause trouble.

Although I did feel a bit regretful, I still decided to return to headquarters with Hijikata-san.

As we walked, the joyous atmosphere of the festival gradually became more distant from us.

After passing through some streets and around a corner, we couldn't even hear the music from the festival anymore.

Finally, Hijikata-san turned towards me to ask a question.

Hijikata: Chizuru. What did you think of the festival?

Yukimura: Ah, yes. It wasn't anything special——

Hijikata:......I didn’t mean that. Rather, I'm asking if you had fun.

Yukimura: Ye-Yes! Thank you for taking me! I really had fun walking around. You also bought me dango and fruits...

Hijikata: What? Is food the only thing you remember?

Yukimura: No, it's not like that! There were also other things, like drawing fortunes and going to some of the stalls...! [???]

He was speaking with a light tone, so I do believe that Hijikata-san had a great time at the festival.

As I recalled how the two of us had been strolling through the stalls while we ate and walked through the festival, I inadvertently glanced at the goldfish.

Yukimura: Oh/Ah, by the way/speaking of which, what are you going to do with the goldfish? Even if you bring it back to headquarters, there won't be any space for it...

Hijikata: And you can’t eat a goldfish.  I could release it into a nearby river though.

Hijikata-san was a bit worried as he gently lifted the goldfish up to prevent the water from shaking.

Hijikata:...But, even once a goldfish is released into a river, they won’t live long.

Yukimura: Won't live long... Is it because its appearance is too eye-catching?

Hijikata: Yeah. There might be other reasons though. 

Although the colours of the goldfish swimming in the fishbowl were very bright, they seemed somewhat ephemeral/illusory.

The water filled glass seemed so fragile that it would break if it reflected sunlight cast a shadow onto Hijikata-san's face.

The sight of Hijikata-san narrowing his eyes/concentrating looked far more beautiful than the swimming goldfish...

I couldn’t help but admire his eyes, which had been drawn elsewhere, while we chatted about the goldfish.

Hijikata: Perhaps the more bright and eye-catching something is, the more enemies there will be... No, maybe it's because of how life is so short that makes it look so beautiful.

Just as Hijikata-san finished saying those words.

Hijikata: What!?

As if to refute HIjikata’s words, the goldfish suddenly jumped up.

Yukimura: Hi-Hijikata-san? Are you okay?

Water had splashed onto Hijikata-san's face, and he lowered the fishbowl with a forced smile/wry laugh.

Hijikata: What an unexpectedly stubborn guy.

Chizuru: Why don't you give/What about giving the goldfish to Yagi-san's children? I’m sure that they should be able to take good care of it.

Hijikta:...Right, that's not a bad idea.

As we talked, our feet, which had stopped, continued moving.

The distance between the shrine for the festival and headquarters, was not very far.

The two of us continued to talk as we walked, and we were almost at headquarters before we even realized it.

After going around one or two corners, we would reach the street that led directly to headquarters...

Hijikata-san halted in his steps.

Yukimura:...Huh? Hijikata-san, why did you suddenly stop? Did something happen?/ Did something happen to make you stop so suddenly?

Hijikata; Shh. Just hide in the shadows over there.

Upon hearing the agitation in his voice, I immediately realized the seriousness of the situation, and nodded nervously.

After hiding ourselves in the cover of a nearby building, I followed HIjikata-san's gaze.

In the distance, I could see a familiar figure in among the crowd.

Kazama:…………

Yukimura; Hi-Hijikata-san, that person is/that's...!?

Hijikata: Yeah. What the hell is he doing in a place like this...? We can't ignore this. We’re chasing him, Chizuru.

It was likely because we were too far behind for him to notice, that Kazama-san was leisurely walking down the street.

In order to not be discovered by him, we hid in the shadows of the buildings as we followed him.

As we walked down the road/streets and turned around the corner, the sounds of the festival gradually became louder.

The path/route Kazama-san took was the exact opposite of the route/one/opposite direction we took just now.

Hijikata: To have already gone this far, don't tell me/could it be that...?

Yukimura: Th-The festival venue...?

Hijikata: Damn it, there are too many people! Did we lose him...!

As we couldn't find Kazama-san as he disappeared into the crowd of people from the festival, Hijikata-san and I looked at each other in dismay.

HIjikata: What's going on? Why would that guy come to some place like this...

Yukimura: I don't know, but since there are so many people here, it'll be difficult find him again..

Hijikata: Who knows/I don't know if he's still even at the shrine. Maybe he was just passing by... is that even possible?

After Hijikata-san and I walked through the torii gates, we were drawn to the vibrant stalls that had been set up on both sides of the path to the shrine.

Hijikata: Having seeing this myself, there really are more people than I expected.

Yukimura: Yes. Regardless if you look to the right or the left, there's nothing but people... [Regardless of where you look, there's nothing but people].

Hijikata: There's so many people, so it'll be a pain if you get lost. Don't go anywhere without my permission.

Yukimura: I-I won't.

Just as Hijikata-san said, the shrine grounds were full of people enjoying the festival.

Although there had been a lot of people when we came in, it seemed like there were even more than before...

Yukimura: Even though this is a small festival, it's full of energy/quite lively.

Hijikata: Apparently there are many stalls here too.

Yukimura: Yes. There are many stalls you normally don't see selling handicrafts and also woodblook prints/nishiki-e... There are so many vibrant stalls here that I can't help but feel that it's as expected of the capital of Kyoto/that it's worthy of Kyoto, as its the capital [reword later?].  

Hijikata: Yeah. While I prefer Edo festivals, festivals like these aren’t bad either...

...It's about time to go to the next area. I said it earlier, but] you didn't forget the purpose of our outing is to patrol, right?

Yukimura: Y-Yes. I know!

After narrowing his eyes as he warned me, Hijikata-san began to walk down the bustling path.

As I made my report to Hijikata-san, while I was looking around——.

I inadvertently stopped upon seeing the box of omikuji had been placed near the worshipping area.

Yukimura: Omikuji... ?

Hijikata: What's wrong, you seem restless. Did you want to try drawing a fortune?

Yukimura: Uh.... Y-Yes, just a bit.

Hijikata: Since these opportunities rarely come by, just go on ahead. 

Although these sort of things depend on your luck, don't blame me if you draw something bad.

Yukimura: I, I know...!

At HIjikata-san's urging, I walked over to omikuji that had been set up on the left and right.

Now, which omikuji one should I choose?

Selecting Option 1——Omikuji on the right side

Yukimura: Hmm... this one then.

After deliberating for a while, I reached for the omikuji on the right.

Yukimura: Please give me a good result! 

Hijikata: Even if you try hard, the result will not change...

HIjikata-san's exasperated voice echoed in my ears, and I took a deep breath as I shakily reached for the omikuji.

After softly sighing, HIjikata-san suddenly came up/moved behind me for some reason.

Before I could even ask what was happening, I felt a pair of hands touching my waist——

Then my feet slowly left the ground.

Yukimura; Hi-Hijikata-san!?

Hijikata: How is it? Is this high enough?

Hijikata-san was holding me by the waist, and had lifted me up high//lifted me up into the air.

For some very strange reason, I decided to watch the xxxHolic stage. i mean, i don’t even remember the plot of the manga (or the last time i even read it for that matter), and since my understanding of spoken Japanese is worse than abysmal, I didn’t really understand what was going on so it probably wasn’t a good idea to watch in the first place... though in fairness, i just had it played in the background as I was mostly focusing on something else at the time. lol. yeah, im weird.

Hakuoki Yuugiroku 2 - Hijikata Chapter 5

There was steam wafting from the tea that had been placed on the tray, and it tickled my nose [reword later].

After a trip to the kitchen to secure the pickles and tea, I headed straight towards Hijikata-san's room.

Yukimura: It would be nice if Hijikata-san could enjoy this.

I muttered quietly with anticipation, and stopped at the door in front of Hijikata-san's room.

Although it wasn't a bad idea to bring food, what if I got in the way of his work and he kicked me out?

While worrying about this, I took in a deep breath and opened my mouth to speak through the closed [im assuming it's "sliding". check later] doors.

Yukimura: Um, Hijikata-san. It's Yukimura.

Yukimura: I'm sorry to disturb you while you're busy. I made you some tea...

After asking several times, there was still no response/signs of movement from the other side of the door.

Yukimura: As expected, it wasn't good to bring tea over......

I was hoping this would make him happy/cheer him up, but the tea had now become cold/had cooled down.

As I listlessly hung my head as I looked down at the tea leaves floating in the teacup——

Hijikata: Hey.

The voice that I had been expecting to hear suddenly came from behind me for some reason.

Yukimura: Ye-Yes!

As soon as I entered the room, the first thing that came into view were the documents and letters scattered all over the place.

After gathering up the things that had scattered to the floor, HIjikata-san sat down.

Hijikata: Well, I just wanted to ask you about what you're carrying in your hands right now...

Yukimura: Ah, yes. I was thinking that it was about time for you to take a break, so I prepared tea and some snacks for you.

Hijikata: You specifically prepared it for me? I'm sorry for troubling you.

After I put down the tray, Hijikata-san immediately reached for the pickles.

After he put the pickles into his mouth, he seemed to be chewing them carefully, as if to taste them slowly/slowly savour them.

Hijikata: Hm? This taste...

Yukimura: Yes. I heard these pickles were brought/sent over from Hino.

Yukimura:...It must have been a friendly dojo.

Hijikata: That's because the owner of the dojo is/was a good person. Thanks to that/him, the number of freeloaders increased while it became more and more poor... 

Hijikata: At the time, all you could eat for a meal were sliced pickles. 

Hijikata: How about it, Chizuru, why don't you try a slice too?

Yukimura: Is that okay/Can I?

Like Hijikata-san suggested, I brought a slice to my mouth.

When I bit into it, a salty taste spread inside my mouth.

Yukimura: They're/It's delicious/Delicious......

Seeing how my eyes had widened, Hijikata-san smiled.

Then/After, as I saw Hijikata-san stretch by lightly turning his neck, I nervously opened my mouth.

Yukimura: Um, speaking of which, Hijikata-san, you've been working all day... If it's alright with you, can I massage your shoulders?

Hijikata: No need to massage my shoulders. Rather, I wouldn't want such a sight to be seen by Souji [reword later? awkward]. 

Hijikata: If he saw that/you doing that, he would definitely say something to me about retiring/about how I should retire.

Yukimura: Yes/I see...

I lowered my head.

Perhaps it was because he couldn't bear to see my pitiful appearance, but Hijikata-san bitterly smiled and shook his head.

Hijikata:......I changed my mind. Well, in fact, my shoulders are [feeling] very stiff/sore.

Seeing his wholly relaxed/comfortable and defenceless expression, I couldn't believe that this was the same Demon Vice-Commander.

Yukimura; You seem really stiff. Thank you for all the hard work you do every day. So, will you be continuing to work after this?

Hijikata: Yeah. I was originally going to work all day today.... that's how it was supposed to be.

Yukimura: Supposed to be?

Hijikata-san glanced at me again with another meaningful look in his eyes/Hijikata-san glanced at me with the same meaningful eyes he had before.

As I blinked my eyes, not knowing what he meant, Hijikata-san's lips lifted into a smile.

Hijikata: In fact, I was going to ordering uniforms, estimating the cost of repairing the leak in the roof... But it seems like the work I was supposed to do was done by someone else. 

Yukimura: Th-That/Th-Then...

I finally managed to figure out the situation.

Then, almost as if he were waiting for it, Hijikata-san gently put his hand on the top of my head.

Hijikata: I rarely have free time.... but it wouldn't be bad to go out.

Yukimura: Ye-Yes!

well... i mostly drove op.3 and souma-hen out of my head with some of the original hakumyu musicals. i had to re-rip all of my hakumyu cds since the files got lost cuz my passport stopped working... then i started to distract myself by listening to the Kazama-hen soundtrack and a bunch of BGM tracks from Saito-hen, Hijikata-hen and Reimeiroku, which resulted in way more music being stuck in my head. lol *insert pitiful laugh here*. maybe i’ll finally be able to motivate myself into finish my score for kazama-hen’s yaisa this time around (it’s hard to stay focused on a +10 min song that’s reaaaaallly not meant for the piano though i was able to match most of the notes to when they played when compared to the actual song starting from the 4th measure, which i consider to be insanely good considering how there are 333 freaking measures or roughly 46 pages in my damn score. still need to fix a number of sections though)... and i know ive done a ton of procrastinating on it.

I stepped into the room.

What immediately came into view was the sight of Nagakura-san pressing both of his hands together to apologize.

Shinpachi:——That's how it is! Sano, I'm sorry! I didn't expect for for this to happen!/things to get to this point/develop to this stage!

Harada:......In other words, I was almost banned from going out because of something that you did? Shinpachi.

Shinpachi: We-Well...... if you look at the outcome, it should be fine...... right...... 

B-But, that’s it. I just put the sake in your room because I wanted to share some delicious sake with you——

It was just bad luck that things ended up that way... [i think?]

Harada: I get it, I get it. I know exactly what happened.

Harada:......But, for me to have been accused without any/for no reason, it's not to much to think that I'd lose my temper, right?

Harada-san cracked his fingers as he spoke.

He was smiling, but his eyes weren’t happy at all. 

Shipnachi: U-Uwaaah...!. calm down, Sano! Why are you hitting me!

Harada: Shut up! You should be thankful that I'm just hitting you!

It seemed that Harada-san was quite furious as he looked genuinely angry.

What should I do......!?

Stop Harada-san <-

Evacuate/Get away

Yukimura: Pl-Please calm down, Harada-san! You can't use violence/Violence is not allowed/Don't use violence!

I hurriedly grabbed/hugged Harada-san to try/and tried to stop him.

Seeing me appear so suddenly, Harada-san was startled, but shortly after, he regained his original scowling expression.

Harada: Don't stop me, Chizuru! That guy, Shinpachi, has earned a good beating!

Yukimura: But, but rather than saying that it was Nagakura-san's fault, wouldn't it be better to say that this was just a coincidence/this was an unfortunate misunderstanding......! 

Harada: You're someone who doesn’t try to offend anyone... .However, Shinpachi. In the end/first place, this incident, were it not for your love of sake/alcohol addiction, none of this would have happened!

Shinpachi: Guh......

Yukimura: But, but starting/engaging in privates fights is punishable by seppuku, so please, please calm down......!

However Harada-san forced me aside and walked over to Nagakura-san, and then smiled.

Harada: Don't worry, Chizuru. This isn't a private fight. I have no intention to start a fight/fight with him.

Shinpachi: Th-That’s right! Although I was prepared to get beaten, won't/cant you forgive me/I was prepared to get beaten, but you’re actually prepared to forgive me...!? No, as expected of my best friend! The broadness of your mind is comparable to Hijikata-san [reword later. sounds archaic lol]!

Looking at the smiling Harada-san, Nagakura-san let out a sigh of relief.

Is that how it will work out/Will that be how this ends......?

I caught the sight of Harada-san's smile deepening as he clenched his fists behind his back.

Harada: Right, I'm not going to fight you——

Harada——But I'm going to punish you! Grit/Clench your teeth, Shinpachi!!!

Shinpachi: GUAHHH!?

Nagakura-san's depressed screams could clearly be heard even outside of headquarters......

Afterwards, Harada-san and Nagakura-san went to Hijikata-san's room......

Seeing Harada-san smile, I couldn't help but also laugh/smile.

Harada: So/Anyway, if you want to go to the festival, just call me at any time/call me whenever. As thanks/As a gift, can I accompany you/keep you company then?

Yukimura: Yes, thank you.

I’m really glad that Harada-san's ban on going out was lifted.
