Q : What do you think is the charm of "Hana Doll"?

Yuuto (Kaoru) : It doesn't end up with a simple idol story, it shows us various stories between people, hope and doubt. It makes us realize that the world is beautiful including all of them.

Q : What's your favorite "Hana Doll" song titles?

Yuuto (Kaoru) : My fav is "BIRTH"!

This is the song where Anthos is "Born" and the lyrics of the song express the determination of members who participated in "Hana Doll Project", yet it is  somewhat disturbing and represents the work of "Hana Doll Project"! I love it!

Q : If there is a new recruitment for "Hana Doll Project", would you give it a try? (More like is they want to participate the audition IF Hana Doll Project is a real thing)

Yuuto (Kaoru) : I don't think I can't tolerate living under someone else's control, so I'm not going to participate in it! (Laugh) 

I want to live freely once in this single life! (Laugh)

Matryoshka

The largest doll looks like it was made of paper mâché. It has poetry and lyrics plastered across it, Robert Frost and Ai Otsuka, Itoki Hana and Matchbox 20. Blue paint has been smeared haphazardly on top, and pieces of origami paper in flowers and polka-dots. The texture and size suggest it has been plastered over many times.

to my dear friend Noah, you asked me what I am listening to right now, so let's go

It's december, good time to still feel [alive], or at least half alive. Apparently I am super late to the party as per usual, but the lyrics are giving strong sound of silence vibes but with extra spite - and who doesn't appreciate spiteful aspiration. The sound is fat but not overproduced, the singer knows when it's time to yell and like I said - everyone knew about this song except for me and hopefully you too haha.

Can you believe it's been over a year since I first listened to Fujii Kaze (藤井風)? Given how wholly his music has taken over my life and the fact that 4 of his songs are still in my top 10 most played songs of all time (and yes, that one live version is still part of it, the corresponding studio version is in 12th place), it's no surprise what comes next. 花 (hana, flower) comes along in 2 versions - a delightful 80s pop version and the ballad. I think you'll really like this one

Amanda is putting out an EP in January and probably not too long after that - there will be a new Dresden Dolls album. They're touring, recording, writing, right now; you know I'm really excited about that. This one is one of the Aotearoa, New Zealand singles featuring Julia Deans. Oh I owe you, little island. Little island - bigger than the sun! Some of us are proud of what we fought for, some of us are proud of how far we could run. [...] Some of us are proud of where we came from. Some of us have to settle being proud that we got away.

I saw Yunchan Lim (임윤찬) winning one of the most important piano competitions and he immediately became my new favorite pianist. This Liszt piece is Liebestraum Nummer 3, based on the poem "O lieb, solang du lieben kannst" (link)

Yonezu Kenshi (米津玄師) has also become a new favorite of mine. His grasp of arrangement both using electronic sounds and orchestration is really unique. I had a hard time selecting just one song of his but I settled on these two with distinctly different sounds:

優しい人 (yasashii hito, kind person), with a deep somberness

まちがいさがし (machigai sagashi, find the difference)

and no list would be complete without everybody being worried about Owen. Alexandria Burning from their album from this year is still in my permanent rotation

Loïc Nottet finally went all french for his latest album. This entire album feels less like a departure from his previous stuff (although it IS substantially different) and more like an arrival - everything falls into place with this one and he is both diverse in his sound and fundamentally recognizable - this song really exemplifies his artistic range (no, the high singing notes are somewhere else, you know I love those).

I don't know if I can get you with Bear Ghost but they are whimsical, fun and unreasonably talented + they made a song about being in love with yourself (or the voice in your head? the jury is still out) and ending a relationship because of it: relatable content. They call their genre adventure rock and yeah, I can see that, it's theatrical, there are influences from various rock genres and it almost dares you to imagine it as a rock opera, haha

13 ! tell me what you’re doing with that other guy

as soon as you enter the venue it was already packed with people. you notice a few bands that you’re familiar with, and you already spot suna & and the rest of the band. quickly you turn towards your bandmates, not wanting to make eye contact with suna.

a small flier is handed to akaashi, he goes over it before speaking. “according to the setlist we go third, after..” he pauses. his eyes cross yours before continuing.

“after riot blck.”

of course, we would have to go after them.

you know why he hesitated. each band introduces the next band. they can quite literally say anything, nothing is against the rules when introducing the next band. to say you are afraid is an understatement. you just hope that they’ll go easy on you.

“everything's okay, we’ll show them up with our performance anyway.” reo says, noticing your nervousness. she wraps her arm around your shoulder, pulling you close to her.

your conversation is interrupted by the loud feedback from a microphone, that makes everyone wince.

“we will begin shortly, with velvet dolls. our favorite girl group.” the speaker smiles.

there is an empty feeling in your stomach as you realize your performance isn’t too long from now. you’re never this nervous, but the last time you were here you were performing with your old band. this is almost like a new experience.

“wait, i should probably go check us in.” bokuto says with a paniced look on his face. akaashi sends him an unamused look before slapping him the back of the head. sending him a look that almost says “how could you forget.”

as bokuto scurries away, clutching the back of his head kuroo wanders in.

“okay our equipment is backstage.” he says, pulling reo into his side before giver her a quick kiss on the forehead.

now you all are just standing around waiting. velvet dolls are making their way on stage, preparing their equipment.

“oh this will be good.” reo says excitedly.

the loud chime of an electric guitar fills the room as they began playing.

“thank you! and up next is Riot Blck, good thing their song didn’t get stolen this time.” hana, the lead singer of Velvet Dolls smirks.

reo looks over at you and notices that your expression falls. she unwraps herself from kuroo’s grasp and grabs your hand, giving it a comforting squeeze.

riot black makes their way onto the stage with their equipment and begins setting up. seeing yui standing in the spot that you used to stand in made your blood boil.

“hi everyone, today we’ll be performing a song called friends written by suna rin.” Yui speaks loudly into the microphone before a guitar rift begins

the first lyrics already catch your attention, “girl, tell what you’re doing on the other side.” rin’s beautiful voice fills the venue. his eyes wander the crowd possibly looking for you. he finds your eyes before singing the next lyric, “and tell, just tell me what you’re doing with that other guy.”

that’s when you realize. this song is definitely about you.

the song continues, and tears spring to your eyes as each lyric relates to you.

“just give me some time and space to realize that you were busy lying, sleeping ‘round with other guys.” he still really thought that

“hey shouldn’t we head back stage to prepare for our performance.” you know she's just trying to prevent you from hearing the rest of the song. she notices your tears.

“yeah.” bokuto replies sadly.

he knows too. they all know this song is about you.

01. how did you find out about anime? I would watch Dragon Ball Z as a child with my older brother in the very early 00’s. It was what we bonded over and everyone at primary school would talk about dragon ball. I was so young then but I remember glimpses. Around this time I also remember getting into Sailor Moon as well.

02. What’s your favourite anime? As much as I have my ups and downs with the final arc I would say Shingeki no Kyojin. I adored the plot twists, suspense, story, thrill, sadness, the emotional journey, character growth and arcs, honestly it’s a great ride. And I still wholly love Levi, Eren, Erwin and co. It was fascinating to see their motivations, journeys (and not always agreeing lol). I also really love fma brotherhood, still have a soft spot for the Dragonball franchise too.

03. Do you have a favourite J-music/k-pop group/singer? Ahhh I adore Hiroyuki Sawano <3 and Yiruma.

04. When is your birthday? And how old are you? May 11th, 27

05. Currently, what is your favourite fandom anime? Idk I guess Shingeki, but it’s more of me engaging with a smaller selection of people. I also like talking about bnha, jjk and kny from time to time. Larger fandoms in general tend to be messy imo.

06. Despite the ups and downs of tumblr, what motivates you to stay here today and do your best? Honestly it’s nice seeing so many talented people and creations here I’m always in awe. And even sharing my own when I feel up for it. And honestly despite that yes tumblr doesn’t feel as lively as other social media, but there is a general respect for content creators on here compared to other platforms. Also there’s always super nice and supportive people on here.

This lists may change one day, but for sure the no. 1s are my all time favorites!

Most of my Anthos* faves are from 1st season. Don't get me wrong, I do love the other seasons too, but the 1st season songs hit different(?), like I can simply say that all 1st season songs are bop! Maybe because they had been around me longer than the other seasons and I got used to them haha(?)

(No, I don't hate other season's songs because of Setsuna (FYI he was added to the team after the 1st season ended). That sheep was sus at first but I don't hate him akskskkd)

The song that glued to Anthos, Birth! I literally sing this to every Hana Doll* friend that I have on their birthday on an app HAHA The beat is *chef's kiss*

I first knew Anthos when they released Unknown MV, but what got me hooked on them was not that song but Birth, and then Stay Away🫰 (Unknown is awesome too)

Next! Stay Away! This song, and Birth! Really love them including the remixes! This song is just too good to be missed. The chorus is addictive. I love this song the moment I listened to the intro lol

And maybe it's weird but I cry everytime I listen to Me Against Myself. As Ryoga oshi, Ryoga's voice in that song is...(I'm going to be corny here) quite emotional imo. And the lyric akakskkdkskd

As for Shine On, I can't explain how or why but I just love songs like this one (well so are people out there) It was like so smooth and calm, and everything hsjwjdkf I love this song especially the melody🫰

The last from my Anthos list is Umbilical Lover! Anthos*'s costumes here are LITERALLY AWESOME. AND BRUH THE CHORUS! GO LISTEN TO IT! I can still feel Lihito's vibrato from that song lmao

My all time Loulou*di fave (I don't think it will ever change lol) is Empty Dream! I remember when I first listened to its teaser (man, it was around 2 years ago??) I instantly thought "This is the kind of 2D idol song that I longed for!" and I was overjoyed lmao

I mean Birth made me think like this also, but in a different way(?) (I guess Birth gave me what I seek in an upbeat song, and Empty Dream for holy-ish(??) song? Bruh I don't know how to explain it sjjsjsjs)

I really love Empty Dream that I still regularly leaving comments on the MV from time to time, and I even have a plan (imagination lol) on how Loulou*di's stage and performance will be if they ever present this song on concerts and all (I'm too addicted please send help)

About Abortive Flower. Ah, yes, a one month old song. I've been listening to it everytime I get the chance since I got the album. Its teaser didn't give it justice(?) about its angsty-ness. The parts after 1st chorus are just so so depressing---I wonder what kind of direction Tosshi-san got when recording the "Kono yo ni ikiru kachi wa nakatta" part and also the last chorus? :") As for Yamashita-san, maybe it's because Toki was---oops. No, I won't spoil the drama part to you :) TakeP did a very great job on potraying Rui-san, he sounded so beautiful--- but empty imo, so Rui-like(?)

And then, Immortal Tale! That song gave me a "a song from a distant, sacred(?) land" feel. The vibe definitely fit the lyrics and all :) That upbeat tempo is something unusual from Loulou*di but they sang it so well, I have no complain🫶

I am a sucker for slow, dark songs, so Black Pulse is a hit for me. The harmony and adlibs and all are so awesome🥺 (I don't know what to comment anymore, that song is just beautiful)

And the last from my Loulou*di list! Is either Final Direction or Perfect Pride (man I couldn't choose ahsjskdk) I love both the same, I just couldn't pick one so I just put them both on the list. Final Direction imo sounds so dramatic (and I love it lol). Perfect Pride's bridge (actually not sure if that part called bridge) is addicting.

If I can say anything, Hana Doll*'s songs are as great as their stories and character designs🫶

Fushi no Hana (An Immortal Flower), Yukiko Kai, 1979

The ‘Fabulous Year 24 Group’ and the shōjo manga revolution

The Year 24 Group’s name refers to the 24th year of the Showa era (1949), which approximates the birth dates of the young women pioneers. It wasn’t a title that its members gave themselves and nor were they a coherent group: according to the translator Matt Thorn, the term includes anyone who contributed to the shōjo manga revolution. But Moto Hagio, Keiko Takemiya and Yumiko Oshima are always acknowledged as among the movement’s most significant artists. Born in the aftermath of the Second World War, these women grew up against the backdrop of the global youth counterculture of the 1960s and sought to transform manga into a new form of self-expression for women.

The decorative illustrations and dreamy jojōga (lyrical pictures) that had been developing in girls’ magazines since the 1920s also influenced manga. The art nouveau- and art deco-inspired fashion drawings of Jun’ichi Nakahara, with their elongated limbs and huge, long-lashed, doll-like eyes, were popular with teenage girls (Nakahara was also an amateur doll-maker). According to Thorn, when Yoshiko Nishitani wrote some of the first boy-girl school romances in the mid-1960s, she drew her characters in this style, which quickly became the convention.

The manga historian Yukari Fujimoto writes that the exaggerated twinkling eye (which expresses emotion and encourages reader identification) was popularised by Macoto Takahashi in the early shōjo manga of the 1950s. Also inspired by Nakahara’s lyrical illustrations, he drew his characters with huge eyes and filled them with glittering stars. Others have attributed the exaggerated eye to Tezuka, who produced the first long shōjo manga, Princess Knight in 1953. Many Western writers assume that he was influenced by Disney, but Tezuka himself said that he was inspired by the eye make-up of the Takarazuka Revue performers, who were based in his hometown.

Your tags poured a little ray of sunshine into my desperate days and reminded me of those good old times when I was a new fan full of enthusiasm and motivation to do something useful for the fandom and raise the awareness about one of the most unique and thought-provoking bands in the world. Thank you ♥ May I ask, for how long have you been a fan of them and do you have a favorite song or album that has a special place in your heart? I became a fan in summer 2013, at first I really loved Razzle Dazzle and Yume Miru Uchuu, but the older I get the more I find relatable some songs on Six/Nine.

Hello! :) Oh gosh, I’m so glad I could’ve helped you maybe smile just a little bit. I really am. :) Ohh, I’m a very, VERY new fan. It’s been barely around two months since I’ve discovered them. But I fell hopelessly in love! I agree that they are very unique and thought provoking, I swear I haven’t heard anything like that before. Surely I can hear the influences by other bands in their music, but the way they do their own thing, the writing, the singing, the lyrics... It feels like something so fresh, so new to me I’m in awe.

Some of my favourite albums are: Kurutta Taiyou, Sexy Stream Liner, Six/Nine, Memento Mori, Juusankai Wa Gekkou, No. 0... Darker Than Darkness is also amazing.

About the songs, there are so many... But some of my absolute favourites are Jupiter, Coyote, Gesshoku (I can’t even express how much I adore that song!), Kirameki no Naka De, Brain Whisper Head Hate is Noise, Aku no Hana, Rakuen, Kimi no Vanilla, Thanatos, Doll, Babel, Romance, Sapphire, Muma the Nightmare, Zangai, Gessekai, Misshitsu, Cum uh sol nu, Victims of Love, Memento Mori. That’s a lot, I know. :D

Six/Nine is a great album. I appreciate it more with every listening.
