I've been watching most games this year, despite timezones, and I thought it would be fun to spotlight each of the teams a little with a daily match preview. Today's games (2023-08-08 in Japan) are Hanami Higashi vs Ube Kojo at 19:00 EDT, followed by Gunma Maebashi vs Clark International at 21:35, NichiDai Yamagata vs Okayama Sanyo at 00:10, and Ogaki Nihon Vs Omi at 02:45. Details under the cut!

For Hanami Higashi vs Ube Kojo: According to the data I have available, Ube Kojo was last in a national tournament at the 2017 Haru no Koshien. Hanamaki Higashi, on the other hand (despite recent struggles) has some bona fides. Their program produced some fairly recognizable names: Kikuchi Yusei (TOR), and Shohei Ohtani (LAA). Expect the Hanamaki Higashi program to continue to shine at least in this matchup.

For Gunma Maebashi vs Clark International: Again, according to stats I have, this is Gunma Maebashi's first national tournament. They're fairly evenly matched with Clark International, a team that has put up some decent performances on the national stage, but has not won a game in both Haru no Koshien they've been invited to. I'm expecting a fairly close game here, but it's HS baseball so anything could happen.

For NichiDai Yamagata vs Okayama Sanyo: NichiDai Yamagata made it to the round of 8 in 2021, which means many of that season's 1st years are now graduating 3rd years. They have an experience advantage over Okayama Sanyo, who last appeared in 2017's Nasu no Koshien losing in the first round. It's worth keeping an eye on NichiDai Yamagata. They have some potential for late round upsets.

For Omi vs Ogaki Nihon: Omi is a Nasu no Koshien powerhouse, making it to the semis for the last 2 years in a row. With experienced 2nd and 3rd years, expect a strong team. On the other hand, Ogaki Nihon's last Nasu no Koshien win was 2017, with a 2nd place finish in 2007 as their best result. This is a program that is itching to win again. This, despite being the game i'm least likely to be awake for, is the one to watch. Omi has an excellent program that could go all the way.

He’d snuck over to your house for the billionth time, launching a rock at your window after seeing the light in your bedroom was still on. You and Makki had once decided to spontaneously take a trip to the edge of town gas station that had a small, usually empty parking lot. It was a normal occurrence for the two of you now, the regular night clerk recognizing you both immediately, offering a small wave like usual. The familiarity of it all made you smile.

The fluorescent neon lighting shown on the grubby pavement, dozens of moths flickering around the bright lights above. The empty parking lot filled with laughter, random curses, the harsh scuffing of sneakers on skateboards and concrete, and the dull hum and hiss of the neon awning lights. The sky was dark, with hints of purple complimenting the yellow tinged moon.

It was slightly chilly out, and you regretted not changing into more suitable clothing for your late night skateboarding with the strawberry head. Not without a sly smirk and a sarcastic pick up line, he offered you his sweatshirt, seeing as you were cold, and he always wore an extra layer because he knew you’d forget to consider the weather- he enjoyed seeing you wear his clothes, and often found himself purposely leaving them around your house when he’d stay over. Mattsun, another of your close friends, had told him countless times over the years that you felt the same way, but he never could shake the feeling of his anxiety. What if he lost you? What if you rejected his feelings and nothing was the same? What if you two would grow distant?

He had a million questions running through his head- maybe it was the tiredness getting to him, maybe it was bravery, he didn’t know, but he couldn’t stop the words spilling from his lips in that moment. He had to tell you, and you looked so perfect right now. Now was the time, he wouldn’t brush it off with fake confidence and a smirk, he was going to face you.

Your opened your eyes slowly, feeling his breath hitch, you raised your head to face him, only a few inches away from each other. Cocking a eyebrow, you asked him if he was just making a stupid joke again- you always felt your heart squeeze whenever he’d brush off his flirty comments as a joke, so you really hoped that for once, he wasn’t kidding.

He wasn’t, and neither of you could really believe what he said. You sat there, staring at your best friends face intently, and you felt your heart race at the distance between you.

In a surge of bravery, you placed your hands on either side of the boys cheeks, pulling him to meet you halfway for a -probably a little too passionate for an empty gas station parking lot at almost 3am- kiss.

Pulling away after what felt like not long enough, you both stilled again. Shock evident on both your faces. Did you really just do that? It was a question running through both your heads, but you found yourself mirroring the smile on his face after you came back to your senses.

“Well that’s one way to say you feel the same way.” With another one of his signature smirks, you both laughed. It was genuine, though. Intense happiness surging through both of you.

You spent the next few hours laying on the pavement, looking at the sky, nuzzled into Makki’s side. Content was the only word you could use to describe how you felt in that moment.

How you met: I think Hanamaki seems like a dog kind of person, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you kept bumping into him whenever you were walking your dog around the neighborhood. Maybe there are a few instances where your dogs are very enthusiastic about meeting each other and the leashes get very tangled and you and Hanamaki end up dancing around each other trying to untangle them at least once a week. He notices that you always stop by the coffee shop to get an iced americano before you go home and one day he just shows up and hands you a cup of coffee when you bump into each other. 

Your first date: Your first date happens at an amusement park! I feel like Hanamaki is an absolute chaotic parkgoer - you guys are that one couple who spins the teacup way too fast on the ride and rides the carousel unironically. You guys also keep repeatedly going on one ride to get the perfect photo + you make it a game to see who can do the weirdest pose for the camera. However, expect Hanamake to sneak in food that he packed himself. No way is he buying/making you pay for shitty amusement park food when he can bring high quality cooked food himself. And of course he has a thermos of iced coffee for you. 

Your first kiss: I feel like he’s the kind of guy to text you at 2 AM being like “hey can i come over” and by the time you’re awake enough to text back he’s already banging on your door. At this point your 50% annoyed, 20% confused and 30% amused. When you open your door, he says “hey I just realized I haven’t kissed you yet and I think it’s high time we fixed that.” It takes you a minute to respond bc IT’S THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT SIR but you giggle and tell him to kiss you. Steps into your apartment and wraps his arms around your shoulders before kissing you deeply. You make him sleep on ur couch bc it’s late at night and he shouldn’t be driving/walking home this late. The next morning he cooks breakfast for you and sheepishly apologizes to you for waking you up with coffee + another smooch.

Anniversary: Hanamaki is one of those people who writes down funny/dumb quotes and jokes that you two share in his notes app. He has iconic sentences you’ve spoken before you’ve had coffee + multiple science jokes and other puns that you’ve both made. For your anniversary he makes a little cute flip book with hand lettered quotes from his notes up, which makes you crack up. He also takes some time off work to maybe go on a weekend trip to Mt. Fuji or something! Also gets your dog new accessories - ties + sweaters, boots etc. He is fully invested in your future as dog parents. 

How they propose: Planned everything out - there are little surprises scattered throughout your day. He starts by waking you up and treating you to breakfast in bed. Sends you/drives you into work, where there is a bouquet of flowers waiting for you. Your PI/supervisor hands you a new coffee mug as a gift. The coffee shop where you usually grab a light lunch gives you your coffee order for free/on the house. Hanamaki gets off work early and shows up to pick you up and treats you to dinner at a fancy place downtown. Finally, when he opens the door to his apartment you’re surprised by his friends (aka the Seijoh 3rd years) who throw confetti at you before holding up signs that say “will you marry me?” You turn around and Makki is kneeling with a ring in his hand. 

What your wedding looks like: Happens in Tokyo, since it’s where both of you live and have made new friends! Of course all of Seijoh is invited (even the coach shows up) + any friends or family as well! I feel like you guys would have an indoor wedding that is themed around your two loves: science and your dogs. There are cute science theme decorations + the cocktails/drinks are served using beakers, syringes, flasks and testtubes (for some extra fun). Your dogs are obviously part of the ceremony - maybe as the flower dogs or ring bearers1 And of course in addition to the regular drinks there is a very extsravagant coffee bar with many condiments and when you two leave for your honeymoon your guests through coffeebeans intead of rice at you!

Newlywed/domestic hc: Now that you guys are a little older you can finally afford a house with a larger backyard + extra room for your puppers to play. You spend an entire weekend rennovating one room in your house to be a doggo play room.  You guys paint a cute mural on it + add different dog beds + towers/playground items + toys to the new room (also a gate if you two need some private time without your furry companions. It’s the best feeling in the world when your dogs run around the room in excitement the next day. Also you have a little placard on your front door that has both your names + the names of your dogs.
