Working on making rubber headed arrows I can use in the basement. Betula Papyrifera aka Paper Birch. It's a delicate wood that requires a gentle touch, proper design and loads of patience. I fell short on all three with this one. I decided to attempt making a classic heavyweight ELB design out of this wood, then toned it down to a midweight. It just didn't pull through and I'm left with this massive fret on the belly. As requested, a little more on the way I steam bend. Laughably basic, no fancy jigs or forms unless I'm doing a tight static recurve. Just hands, eyes, and the way it 'feels'. If a bow is roughed out to a smooth floor tiller it often wants to straighten itself out when bent backwards. This one took a lot of steam and work to get into shape. Each limb had opposing twist and the handle section had a sideways kink but I kept at it and wound up with a pleasing profile. It'll be a lightweight bow, perhaps even just an art piece, but I love how it turned out. Making bows n' arrows is one thing, shooting them is another. In the making process, for me, it's a practice of patience, focus, intention, a clear acceptance of the character of each piece of wood, learning how to work with it, what it is, what it can be, and if I can manifest it with the tools I have. In the shooting, it's a practice of being in tune with myself more than the wood. If I don't know myself, if I don't create a consistent draw, if I don't shoot with a clear mind or steady hand, and if I don't give myself the opportunity to see how I interact with these things, I won't be able to see how the arrow is interacting with the bow, and I won't be able to give myself what I need to improve. The whole world is a mirror. Steam bending some reflex into these bows. For those who don't know what reflex is or how it works, it's when the limbs of the bow extend outward from the handle when the bow is unstrung... bent backwards, if you will. This allows the bow to store more energy when it's strung because the limbs have to travel farther to get there. Finished up a 60lb ELB style longbow. I haven't shot many heavy bows and learned a lesson today.
