Headcanon boxer names part 2! Electric boogaloo! (Snes Edition)

Explanations for the meaning and some history behind their names and stage names included too!

Gabby Jay: Gabrielle Eugène Jay

Gabrielle is the french feminine form of Gabriel, meaning "God is my hero". Eugène is the french form of Eugenius (Eugene in English), meaning 'Well born". Jay is an English name coming from founding father John Jay, whose surname derived from the jaybird.

Gabby was named after his aunt, Gabrielle Eugénie Jay. Because she cared for him so much after he transitioned, as a way to continue honoring her after her death, he chose to only masculinize his middle name and change his surname to Jay.

His original surname, Durand, means stubborn.

Gabby is cool with any spelling or nickname he's given. This has led to many of the younger boxers calling him 'Gibby' (Although the shortening is incorrect).

Piston Hurricane: Raúl Palomo-Aguado

Raúl is the Spanish form of Radulf, which comes from Ráðúlfr, meaning "Wisdom wolf". Palomo means "pigeon", from Latin palumbes. Aguado is derived from Spanish agua meaning "water".

A lot of people consider his first name to be 'fancy' which he doesn't understand whatsoever.

The 'Piston' in his stage name comes from his interest in cars- particularly the unique car culture of his home country.

If you call him Ralph, he'll punch you.

Bob Charlie: Robert Stuart Charlie

Robert comes from the Germanic name Hrodebert meaning "bright fame". Stuart comes from the Scottish occupational name Steward, derived from Old English stig "house" and weard "guard". Charlie comes from Charles, the French and English from of the Latin name Carolus, meaning 'man'.

Bob doesn't like his full name very much- he thinks it's stiff and formal. He shortens it whenever and wherever he can.

He goes by "Stu" just as much as Bob.

In an Ironic twist, "Charlie" isn't short for anything, that;s just his last name lol.

Dragon Chan: Hejian (A.K.A Dagon) Cheung

Heijan comes from the characters 河 and 健, which mean "River" and "Strong, healthy" respectively. Cheung is a Cantonese version of Zhang, meaning "stretch, extend", a name given to bowmakers.

Heijan prefers to either have his name said as a single word, or to go by 'Dagon", a name he picked up from a friend's DnD campaign.

He was suprised to learn the name Dagon actually comes form HP Lovecraft. Knowing it's the name of an eldritch god makes it 600x cooler for him.

Dragon got his stage name from tourists mishearing "Dagon" ans "Dragon", he stuck with it as his name means 'strong river', which Chinese dragons are associated with. 'Chan' just comes from his admiration of Jackie Chan and Kung fu movies in general.

Masked Muscle: Antonio Carrillo-Maldonado

Antonio is the Spanish and Italian form of Antonius, which has no known meaning. Carrillo means "cheek, jaw" in Spanish. Maldonado comes from a nickname meaning "badly given, ill-favoured" in Spanish.

He doesn't mind the name Tony, but prefers to be called Antonio.

Most of the time, he only writes his last name down as Maldonado.

Every time he meets someone else with the same name, he takes them out for drinks.

Aran Ryan: Airyn O’Ryan

Airyn is a misspelling of Aaron, which comes from the Hebrew name Aharon which doesn't have a known origin, though common theories state it means "High mountain" or "Exhaled". O'Ryan is anglicized from Ó Riain, meaning "Descended from the little King".

Airyn was bullied for the spelling of his name, to the point where he used to hate his name, instead wishing he'd been named something else.

If he's grateful for one thing, it's that he never got a middle name. His mum told him that had she given him one, it would've been after his father's name Bartholomew. Bullet dodged.

His stage name "Aran Ryan" was a mistake by the WVBA. Although he pointed out that His name wasn't written down correctly, it never got fixed and Airyn decided to ignore it.

Heike Kagero: Hisoka Shiraishi

Hisoka is a name and word that literally means "Reserved, Secretive" in Japanese. Shiraishi is from Japanese shira meaning "white" and ishi meaning "stone".

Hisoka was named after Ayaka Hibiki's stage name.

Whenever he makes Narcis mad, Narcis calls him His-sock-uh. Hisoka has embraced this as a nickname.

They got their stage name from the tale of Heike, the name Heike meaning "House of Tiara" and Kagerō the Japanese word for 'heat haze' and 'mayfly'

Mad Clown: Otello Sordi

Otello is the Italian version of Othello, which has no known meaning. Sordi comes from sordo meaning "deaf" in Italian.

Otello adores his name and is quite proud to show it off.

Funnily enough, being named Otello is what got him into opera, as Otello is also the name of an opera based on the play by Shakespeare.

Mad Clown was meant to be a placeholder name, but he ended up keeping it around long enough that it stuck. He mildly regrets it.

Narcis Prince: Narcissus Aiolos Helios Prince

Narcissus is the Latinized form of Greek Narkissos, possibly derived from narke meaning "sleep, numbness". Aiolos means "quick-moving, nimble" in Greek. Helios means "sun" in Greek. Prince comes from a nickname from Middle English, Old French prince (Latin princeps).

Narcis loathes his name and finds it extremely pretentious. His entire family has a naming convention after Greek words, particularly mythology.

The Name Narcis itself is a Catlan variant of Narcissus and the Catlan name for the Narcissus flower, which makes it more tolerable for Narcis.

If he were to change his name, he'd choose Živan, which is a slovak name meaning living/alive.

Hoy Quarlow: Bai-Wei Zhu

Bai-Wei comes from the characters 百 and 伟 meaning 'One hundred" and "extraordinary" respectively. Zhu means "Vermillion red".

Bai tends to only go by the first part of his name, unless around family or akin to family, who call him Wei Wei.

All of his siblings share the second half of their name "Wei", which isn't an uncommon practice for siblings in Chinese culture.

The name 'Hoy Quarlow' means twice-cooked pork, one of his favorite foods.

Rick Bruiser: Richolas Nadford Broesder

Richolas and Nadford are misspellings of the names Nicholas and Radford respectively. Broesder has no meaning or clear origin I could find.

Rick wasn't expected, so his parents panicked and named him... that.

Rick never found his name odd. Not until high school when a teacher read his full name aloud and asked who the fuck would name their kid that.

Though Rick lieks the name Broesder, he often struggles to spell it. This is why he tends to write his name as Rick Bruiser more often.

Nick Bruiser: Nicholas Radford Broesder

Nicolas comes from the Greek name Nikolaos meaning "victory of the people". Radford comes from many English place names, whose meanings vary from Old English read "red" + ford "ford" to a derivative of Old English ridan "to ride", with the meaning "ford that can be crossed on horseback". Broesder has no meaning or clear origin that I could find.

The brother's parent's also have names ending in -ick, Vick and Dick Broesder.

Nick is insistent that Radford is also the source of the word 'radical', no one has managed to change his mind yet.

Nick doesn't like his surname much, which is why him and Rick started calling themselves 'Bruiser'

Peter Punch/Birdie: Peter Andrew Jaskólsk

Peter derives from the Greek word Petros meaning stone. Andrew comes from the Greek name Andreas, meaning "Manly". Jaskólski is a Polish place name shared by many towns, coming from the name for swallows jaskółka.

In boxing, he uses the name 'peter punch', which his mom came up with.

He also goes by 'Birdie' which comes from the fact that when he whistles, he sounds like a bird.

Peter was born with Jewish ancestry but wasn't very close to Jewish culture. As he gets older and more connected, however, he ends up adopting the Hebrew name Yaron ben Avraham v'Sarah

Best-loved fragrance by far, and it has so much in it, so versatile, a bit of everything intriguing; vanilla, bergamot, amber, and of course, woods. The scent depends on what you want it to smell like, at certain times of the day. K would wear this with great elegance and confidence. This perfume is such an all-rounder, a pleaser for everyone included, he would totally enamor any crowd and audience with this!

HONORABLE MENTION • Chanel Bleu de Chanel; a fan-favorite oldsport scent but it would be a shame to call it grandfatherly — it's anything but that! It delicately embraces masculinity with a fresh, clear, green, woodsy aroma before turning it into a bright burst of citruses, empowering one's confidence. It stays on for quite long, not even a sweaty dance practice can make it go away! Entrust this to K as a second choice, he would greatly wear it for a cooler autumn day to show off his charm!

TOP PICK • Ralph Lauren Polo by Ralph Lauren Cologne for Men; This is a classic, sleek, smooth, and has been a favorite for decades around men, rightfully so. It has a lot of spin-offs, true, but nothing compares to the original mix of wood, tobacco, and leather feel. They say it comes with a tinge of American nostalgia but let the wearer decide that. It's a strong scent for Fuma every day, but when you come to realize how much it suits him you'll miss the aroma tickling your nose whenever you're near him, so anyone who asks him to change his cologne probably hasn't been around him for long enough. But luckily Fuma trusts his judgement and knows this is a killer combo!

HONORABLE MENTION • D.S. & Durga Bowmakers; It was hard to choose between these two which matches Fuma better, but it came down to this. I'd say this is better for special occasions, in the end, this combination can be too extra for ordinary days, sometimes you just wouldn't be able to handle it, just like Fuma himself! It's outdoorsy, woody, with hints of maple, cedar, even cypress, and mahogany... which makes me remember a lumberjack but it's a pleasant scent nonetheless! Maybe during a walk outside it can lift the mood, but definitely not inside.

TOP PICK • Aramis Eau De Toilette; One of the longest-lasting ones on the list, but it's to be expected from Nicholas. But this staying time is because of strong fragrance notes, such as; starting with bergamot, then myrtle, sage, and pepper so it can morph into a spicy, musky intoxicating aroma packed further with clove bud and patchouli too. If Nicholas is on the line, it has to be extra and demanding, attention-demanding and he does it so well, honestly. The base has a bit of sandalwood, as well as vetiver and oakmoss, so all-in-all this perfume boasts such a presence behind it that projects self-confidence at all times.

HONORABLE MENTION • Le Labo AnOther 13 Eau de Parfum; If it's about Nicholas he has to go for it hard, again, overdoing and provoking everyone's expectations with a scent like this because no one will compare to this perfume! It's intoxicating in a good way, you want nothing else just to smell it until it's gone to try and decipher the cologne's components. Mysterious, but loud and clear! Putting heavy emphasis on the musky feeling here, mixed with traces of jasmine, a feeling of moss from the woods — you just want to feel it, touch it, devour this crazy combination! It will have you coming back very soon; either for Nicholas himself, or just another spritz from the perfume bottle.

TOP PICK • Gucci Guilty Pour Homme; Don't judge a book by its cover! The bottle is very simple and sophisticated but the scent can bring some surprises. Very citrusy, fruity, and sweet-smelling with the lavender and orange blossom additions! A perfect combination of comfort and adventure in just one sniff. EJ is the sweetest in all aspects so it felt right giving him something like this! You feel like you're in a beautiful flower field while enjoying some rare tropical fruits, a never-ending sugary feeling flows through you and the only thing left from the picture is Euijoo himself. He would wear this with great confidence!

HONORABLE MENTION • BOUTONNIÈRE NO. 7; Living and thriving proof that floral scent on men can be good, especially for EJ! True gardenia being the main element of flowers set against a strong string of citruses and lavender, this cologne is a walking garden of surprises. Instead of allergies, it brings clearness and joy, and of course, Euijoo! Perhaps he would be hesitant at first, wouldn't even think about discovering something like this on the perfume aisle but make him believe in the sheer magic of men wearing strong floral scents with a fancy shirt, it's a sight to look at!

TOP PICK • Burberry Mr. Burberry Indigo; It's bold, it basically speaks for Yuma! I honestly think this is my best match-up, I don't know why, but I'm just really feeling the vibes with this one. It has such a wild range of audiences for admiration; because of its crispness, and evergreen combination of strong citrus at first, then dying down to a pleasant blend of rosemary, violet, and some amber it's an extraordinary choice for everyday use. But Yuma would love this!

HONORABLE MENTION • Hermès Terre d'Hermès Eau Intense Vétiver; I admit this choice may differ from the first one a bit too much but I can imagine this on Yuma on a late night out, attracting stares and looks, left and right with this captivating perfume. It's an interesting combo; very verdant, delicate orange-scented original, then it takes it up a notch with a harsh punch of Sichuan pepper! Too spicy for everyday use, this is more of a once-in-a-while-scented bottle of surprise, with the exciting fruitfulness of a new adventure on the horizon! Yuma would rock this on his own, I'm sure!

TOP PICK • Heretic Dirty Grass Eau de Parfum; The name is a bit weird but it's an absolute natural, earthy, green scent with a dash of oil in it, and some juicy lemon to add a smidge of flavor and interest to the wearer, but otherwise it's perfect for business-casual, and all-time-casual occasions. You might only smell it if you're very close to Jo, and even then you feel like questioning your senses, but it makes you embark on a bigger, longer journey on finding out Jo's secret, so it's definitely a win. You'll surely want to taste more than just a spritz of the cologne!

HONORABLE MENTION • Acqua Di Gio From Giorgio Armani; Great for the daytime in any hot weather! Incredibly natural scented light perfume; its watery, citrusy, and even more mysterious aroma makes you question if anything's present on your body while wearing it. Far from fancy, it brings out the best when one wants to seem effortlessly put-together and this inoffensive scent is the icing on the cake for Jo's laid-back persona!

TOP PICK • Jo Malone Black Cedarwood & Juniper Cologne; This is a polished, perfected, deep scent. It's cool, makes the wearer calm and collected with its earthy cedar — you already know this is a reoccurring theme —, juniper berry to ease the mind, and a touch of cumin and surprisingly, chili! Perhaps a bit spicier in the end than you would like, but surely unforgettable and outstanding, matching Harua's talent and visuals!

HONORABLE MENTIONS • Tiffany & Co Tiffany & Love Eau de Toilette for Him; the definition of fresh, cool, and airy smell, very light and natural by carrying both the refreshing scent of woods and the sky together. Combined with a couple of intricate fruits and blue sequoia — which can be found in Tiffany & Love for Her, basically the perfect pair for this cologne! All in all, it's a perfect second choice for Harua and his calm, collected, and endearing persona!

TOP PICK • Acqua di Parma Blu Mediterraneo Cipresso di Toscana; This was one of the hardest that I had to look after the most, but now I'm confident! This screams holidays, fun, and the fresh feeling of seawater with a bit of salty aftertaste. Cypress, balsam, and pine blend all with bitter orange and lavender, creating a refreshing repackage of an Italian countryside! It felt so right for Taki, it just made me remember his bright smile, so summer crush feels it is!

HONORABLE MENTION • Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle Bigrade Concentrée Parfum Spray; transparent and fresh but nothing like an ordinary scent! Zesty and delicious with orange and light traces of rose, but down-to-earth mixed with spice by the additional taste of hay and cardamom. Adds such an unforgettable extra flavor, the way you'll never miss Taki's outstanding skills and personality in any video-filmed content!

TOP PICK • Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille; It radiates warmth and calmness, a spark of sympathy, without being outdated — this scent is forever! This is another one where you'll probably want to go back to have another sniff from the perfume bottle but Maki's got you! When he's covered in this — most days — a hug is sure to come your way any time during the day! It's spicy, but not in a heavy way, just the right amount! And if you stick around too much, maybe another hug is bound to find you!

HONORABLE MENTION • Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Pour Homme; Another sunny scent, for another sunshine of the group! A lot of citrus notes; mandarin, bergamot, and grapefruit but still a bit earth-bound with a whiff of rosewood and musk, maybe a tinge of juniper in there. It's that feeling when you're on holiday and you're in your hotel, away from the sea, but you can still feel it on you; yet you're surrounded by a man-made environment. Also, I can totally imagine these slightly stronger, woodier scents for Maki, I think it would make him stand out even more!

Day 23 - Knowledge

Halt sat with his elbows on his knees, watching the steam rise from the small hole in the ground in front of him. It twisted and turned through the chill air until it dissipated into the cold afternoon above him. Making bows was a contemplative task, contemplative enough that Halt had been avoiding it for several weeks now. But as he sat waiting for the steam to soften the wood strips he had carefully prepared the day before, he couldn’t help his thoughts wandering with the steam in the direction of Castle Redmont, and the boy residing somewhere within. He knew very well that this bow could end up being for nothing. It was unlikely that Sir Rodney would take the boy for Battleschool due to his size, and Halt was certain that Baron Arald wouldn’t deny his request to apprentice once he made it. But the boy could always refuse his apprenticeship. Perhaps he preferred the idea of farming to spending all day with a grumpy old Ranger. Maybe Halt’s own natural inclination towards the Ranger lifestyle was just that—his own inclination.

He rose abruptly, shaking the leaves off the cuffs of his pants, and crossed to the wooden board that covered the small pit he had dug to steam the bow. He pulled the board aside and turned his face away from the billowing steam within as he reached for the strips of wood. He had learned this trick from Temujai bowmakers many years before, when he had lived among them for a time, before they had declared him an enemy of the people. The steamed wood would bend easily, and when it was glued into place and dried, it would retain whatever shape he twisted it. He set one strip of wood against the toe of his boot and began to gently warp it with his hand. He would recreate the S-curve of the Temujai recurve bows, something he had practiced over and over. The boy was small, he knew, and it would take some time before he could pull a full sized longbow.

That is, if he could even pull a bow at all. Perhaps Halt wouldn’t be able to teach him effectively, even if he did choose an apprenticeship with the Ranger. He had good luck with Gilan, but Gilan was a fast learner anyways. His success as a Ranger was likely due to his own natural skill, not Halt’s instruction, and if he was honest with himself, it was more than likely just a fluke that Gilan turned out as well as he did. Halt’s hands moved automatically to the next strip of wood and the small jar of glue next to him. At this point, he barely even needed to think about what he was doing as he shaped the bow piece by piece. What if the boy went through his training and ended up dying to some mission due to Halt’s inadequate teaching? He had told Crowley that he didn’t want an apprentice more than a decade before, and yet here he was, choosing to take on another. Tempting fate, that’s what he was doing.

He shook his head slowly, looking at the half-formed bow in his hands. The sun was beginning to descend below the horizon, and Halt had reached a point in his craftsmanship where he needed to let the bow dry before adding the rest of the strips of wood. The bow was still rough, nowhere near complete. It lacked the grace of a fully formed bow, and it likely wouldn’t hold an arrow in its current state. Yet Halt studied it intensely, turning it over in his hands again and again; he had made dozens of bows just like this one, and he knew that his craft was sound. He could see the completed bow in his head, with the upturned tips of the string nocks curving gracefully into the grip. He knew it would shoot well too, once he was done with it. Halt looked slowly from the bow to the red walls of the castle in the distance, gently gleaming in the red sunset, and the faintest hint of a smile began to curve the edge of his mouth. The boy within was just as unfinished, a restless ball of energy with no training and no discipline. But he’d done it once before, hadn’t he? It had taken time and effort, and a great deal more patience than Halt liked to think about. But the knowledge Halt could give the boy might shape him into a Ranger worthy of joining the Corps in his own right. He set the bow in the crook of a nearby tree and began to walk back to his quiet cabin. Tomorrow was Choosing Day, of course, but Halt had already made his choice. Alright Will, he thought, Let’s see what you can be.

WELL. ive been putting off a proper character introduction post for katsu due to lack of sufficient motivation but HERE WE ARE FINALLY. my silly boy katsu. my darling son. my lizard kitty thing. lil long under the cut :)

favorite color: he's a sucker for blue, but also likes a nice bright red. favorite food: unadon (bbq eel over rice) romantic interests: had brief crushes on martyn and aymeric that he never pursued. also developed an attraction to his then-best friend thancred in post ARR. did not pursue him either until post HW, but even then kept it relatively unofficial. it wasnt until late STB that they made things official between them. classes: -had some sojutsu (spear arts) training as a teenager as part of his education, so he uses polearms as his weapon of choice for all of ARR til SHB. begins his dragoon training in ARR as well. -picks up BLU during post ARR just for fun. -picks up DNC during post SHB initially on a whim but later as an outlet for expressing his emotions. -picks up BRD post EW for similar reasons, and also as a way to have a "fresh start" after everything that happened to him during MSQ. -picks up DRK directly after 6.4. initially just wanted to learn swordplay in general while trying to conjure a blade of light at will to defeat zeromus, but his dark magic is warped by the lightcrystal given to him by yshtola in 6.2, essentially becoming a custom class. never actually named by anyone in game (i think?) but my name for it is arch knight, or ARK, based on the ff tactics class.
