Chapter II - "Family"

Hwa is sitting in her room, working on her own little project. She had been asked to do a solo stage at SBS Gayo Daejun, where she´s finishing up the song she's about to perform. None of the other members knew about this, except for Jongho, who basically figured it out on the second day after her getting the call and agreeing. During her preparations, Hwa had asked some select ones of her friends to help her, mainly Soobin and Eunkwang, and she asked her friend Hyunjin for advice on her outfit. 

With SBS coming closer, Hwa has the pressure of working on two performances, one being her solo stage and one the official performance of Ateez as a whole. Even though she's often exhausted to no end, she's pushing through, sometimes working late into the night and then being carried to her room by one of the members, because she fell asleep in the living area of the dorms. Tonight is again one of those nights, Jongho walking into the living area just to see Hwa sitting leaned against the sofa, her open laptop on the coffee table, while her head is tilted down, her headphones hanging off her ears by now. “C’mon moonpie, let's get you to bed,” he whispers and takes her headphones off her head before closing the laptop, not without checking if she's saved everything properly first though. He then picks her up gently and carries her to her room, Hwa snoring quietly.

The next day, she does seem sleepy throughout the day, but nothing could dim her determination for the performances, happy and excited to perform every single one of them on the SBS stage. “Guys, I´ll head over to meet with Hyunjin and the boys at their dorms, I´ll be back for dinner,” Hwa says with a bright smile, a little breathless after they went through all three performances for that day. The boys smile and wave at her when she walks out, not before placing a little peck on their cheeks. Jongho decided to accompany her down to the entrance of the building, wishing her luck, because he knows what the meeting will be about. Hyunjin and Minho already waited in the car at the entrance to the KQ building, Hwa almost jumping into the backseat in excitement. 

“Hey guys! Thanks so much for helping me, I just have to go over the dance a few more times and with your help, i´ll be ready for this weekend!” She exclaims happily, her cheeks blushed in excitement. The day with her two friends feels like time runs out way too quickly and soon, they went over the dance a few times and when stepping out of the practice room, they all noticed that it got dark already. “So, the boys don't know anything about the song or your solo stage? They haven't heard it yet?” Hyunjin asks, nudging Hwa´s side gently and Minho chuckles. Hwa just shakes her head, grinning. “Only Jongho knows that i´m doing a solo stage, but he kept shut about it and he hasn't heard the song either. I´m so nervous, but also excited!” She giggles, getting into Minho´s car once again, so they can drive her back to Ateez´s dorms, where Hwa hugs her friends and says goodnight before heading inside where the boys wait at the table, dinner already prepared. 

“Oh- did you really wait for me now? You could've eaten already boys,” Hwa mumbles, quickly dropping her bag to sit down with the others for dinner, smiling happily. “Nonsense, jagiya. Binnie sent me a text to let me know when you´ll be home, so we prepared dinner for us all.” The wide grin on Wooyoung´s face gets even wider when Hwa places a kiss on his cheek and hugs him tightly. “You´re the best, Woo, thank you.” “Okay okay, stop it guys, we´re all hungry! Sit down princess, pleeease!” Laughing at Mingi´s whiney voice, she sits down and already reaches for her chopsticks. The food Wooyoung prepared does smell heavenly and when her stomach growls loudly everyone starts laughing. The nine of them have a fun dinner together, even doing the cleaning after this in teams before they all drop onto the sofa in the living room. “How was your day with them, little one? Are you ti-” With a look over at the girl, Seonghwa chuckles, seeing her cuddled up against Yunho, already passed out into a deep slumber as it seems. 

The next few days until SBS fly by and when the day starts, Hwa´s alarm is set to snooze every five minutes until Seonghwa enters the room with a slightly annoyed sigh. “You know, when you press snooze all the time, why not set the alarm for an hour later? Come on, Hwa get up, you should shower before Wooyoung uses up all the hot water again,” he says, pulling back her blanket and opening the curtains in front of her window. When he looks at the sleepy Hwa, who slowly gets up and slurps towards the bathroom, he frowns, grabbing her pillow and smells it. Another deep sigh escapes Seonghwa as he hurries to find Hongjoong taking the pillow with him. 

“We´ve got a problem, Hongjoong,” the older one says, throwing the pillow over to the captain, who raises an eyebrow in confusion. “What´s up? Whose pillow is this?” The younger asks, closing his laptop to give Seonghwa his full attention. “It´s Hwa´s. Did staff again wash our bedding and such? Her skin looked very irritated when I woke her up just now, and the bed linen didn't smell like our usual detergent.” Seonghwa´s suspicions get confirmed, when they hear some sneezing down the hallway, it seems like Hwa does react to the detergent once again. “Okay, you go and help her, make her shower more than once if necessary, I ́ll call manager-nim and try to figure it out. I really hope they didn't use this for our stage outfits as well…” Before he even finished speaking, Hongjoong already got out his phone to call their manager, hushing Seonghwa out of his room and to the bathroom. 

After knocking on the bathroom door, Seonghwa waits patiently for her to answer him, Yeosand walking by as the oldest stops him. “Yeosang, can you tell the others to please remove the bed linen of every bed? And can one of you do that for Hwa´s bed as well please?” “Wrong detergent again?” The younger one asks and Seonghwa just nods, looking at Hwa when the bathroom door opens and both men can see the girl's face. Yeosang doesn´t need any more info and hurries to fulfill the task given by his eldest while Seonghwa gives Hwa a soft smile. “Come, we´ll wash your hair. Don´t worry, it was only one night, so it won't be too bad with the allergy.” Following Hwa inside, they leave the door open, this had been an unspoken rule from the beginning and now it´s a mere habit that whenever one of the boys is in the bathroom with Hwa at the same time, the doors stay open then. “My eyes are itchy…what if I can't wear contacts, Seonghwa?” She mumbles, leaning over the bathtub, so the oldest could help her wash her hair, his slender fingers massaging the shampoo into the girl's scalp to calm her down. “Then you can wear your glasses, little one. I promise, it´ll all work out, okay?”

After almost an hour, Hongjoong had finally gotten all the information on what happened, thankfully it was only the bed linen the staff had washed, and Seonghwa had managed to help Hwa to wash her hair and skin properly, so that almost no traces of the slight allergic reaction were left. However, Hwa´s eyes kept getting irritated whenever she tried to put in her contacts, which made her tense all morning. She's still quite insecure about her glasses and her freckles, so she's even more nervous for this performance day. Yeosang also had called Hyunjin to let him know what happened, so he´d be prepared to cheer up his best friend when they arrived at the building for the show. They all wore rather casual clothes on the way to the building, so the first way they have to go is to their dressing rooms to get ready with the first outfits, thankfully Stray Kids and Ateez had the rooms right next to each other this time, so it was easy for Hyunjin to join and encourage Hwa a bit.

“Ohh, you look pretty! Even prettier than Yeo!” Hyunjin exclaims when he enters Ateez´s room, drawing an “Oi!” from Yeosang. Hwa giggles slightly, even though she still feels terribly insecure about it, especially since the stylists couldn´t really put the usual makeup on the girl, and now her freckles are very visible. “Sorry Yeo, but she's just prettier than you, face it.” Hyunjin laughs, nudging his friend's arm while the stylists still help Hwa with getting ready completely. “Yeosang always will be the prettiest, Jinnie.” Hwa´s words actually draw a slight blush from Yeosang and behind the girl, Hyunjin can see the other members smile thankfully, grateful that he calmed Hwa down. 

“Ateez, you´re on stage in five, everyone hurry!” From outside the room, they hear the managers call everyone to get ready and out to get ready for their first performance. When they're on stage, Hwa feels quite confident, even if her own solo performance lingers in the back of her mind. She does her best, smiling through the performance this time, since it's a Christmas song. When this one ends, her and the boys go backstage to get changed already, then sit down in their designated sitting areas for a while, watching the other performances. When it's time for their next performance, Ateez once again gets on stage, performing ‘Deja Vu’ and ‘The Real’. Hwa does struggle a bit, sometimes almost mixing up some steps, but it's almost unnoticeable for the fans, the only ones who might have noticed would be her members and possibly Hyunjin. Without any major mistakes from Hwa, Ateez once again crushed the stage, happy about all the fans cheering for them. When the music ends, they all walk down from the stage, gathering backstage to talk for a few moments and hand over the microphones. Before they head back to their spots though, Hwa announces that she's going to the bathrooms for a moment and will meet them at the table. At first, the boys don ́t want to leave her alone, since they know that she ́ll get lost, but Jongho was able to convince them. 

When they all sat down, Seonghwa and Hongjoong exchange surprised looks when the MC announces a solo stage from ‘Choi Hwa Young from Ateez’ with her first own song ‘Family'. the other boys also stare at each other for a moment, only Jongho chuckling quietly since he knew, quickly shushing his members when they started to ask him questions. It's visible for them, and also for Hyunjin and Lee Know, that Hwa is very nervous as she ́s standing on the stage. 

When the first notes start and some video clips from their dorms, recorded by Hwa herself on the big screen in the background start to play, the whole hall gets quiet. Then, Hwa starts singing, rapping and even dancing her own choreography. The song is about the boys, how thankful she is for them to have accepted her in this little found family. About how they always help each other, how she trusts them and that she would never want to exchange this happiness for anything in the world. Some clips show peaceful afternoons, some chaotic dinner-scenes or just them having fun and enjoying each other's company. Hwa even managed to include every member´s name into the lines, thanking every single one of them personally and telling every member how much she loves them. When she looks at the table with her boys, she can see some of them cry, all of them with a proud smile on their faces. ending the song on a high note, she can't hold back some tears, bowing to the audience as she finishes. Hwa had to close her eyes for a moment, but when hearing a commotion near the stage, she opens them, gasping when she´s suddenly engulfed into a hug between eight other bodies; the boys had just climbed the stage to hug and cuddle her, even Jongho hugging her tightly. “We love you, little one, and we´re so proud of you,” Seonghwa mumbles, the traces of tears evident on his face when the young woman looks up at him with a smile. She doesn't even hide her own tears at the moment, only laughing quietly as the MC has to interrupt their little celebration on stage, to ask them to clear the stage for now.

Mayfly and Their Larvae Part 1

BtoB learns some things about their dongsaengs

I'm only a little sorry for the title. Anyway, this chapter is really just set up. I don't know how long this is going to be, but here's part one

The members of BtoB were currently gathered in one of the conference rooms at the Cube Entertainment, in the middle of a group writing session. Or at least they were trying to write. None of them really had any ideas for lyrics right now, so it was mostly six men frustratedly staring at paper before scrolling through their phone for a bit. The unproductive writing session was interrupted by both Peniel and Minhyuk's phones ringing. Both men looked somewhat confusedly at their phones before answering. The other four men watched as the two answering their phones stood up and went to opposite corners of the room to talk.

Minhyuk and Peniel both returned at roughly the same time. They were both still wearing a confused expression on their faces. "That was Stray Kids' Bang Chan. He said that some of their schedules got changed at the last second and he's wondering if we can hang out with some of his dongsaengs. Or something like that" Minhyuk explained.

"Huh weird. That's almost exactly what Ateez' Seonghwa told me. Except he sounded kind of frantic and specifically asked if we could watch his dongsaengs. I told him I'd ask." Peniel said. A confused silence fell over the group.

"I think it's a bit weird that the eldest of these two groups don't seem to trust their dongsaengs to be alone, but I missed the unit performance in Kingdom. I say we agree to it.” Said Changsub. The others were quick to agree and Minhyuk and Peniel sent texts to the people that had contacted them. While waiting for their dongsaengs to arrive, the six men began to get the room ready for company.

The six men decided to move to the room that had the entertainment system. They’d be able to hook up karaoke or put on a movie. Eunkwang and Sungjae also had a couple of gaming systems stored in the room and they began to look through their stash of games to decide which games their hoobaes might enjoy. Changsub, Hyunsik, and Sungjae were the most nervous to hang out with the younger groups. While Changsub had met them briefly at the beginning of Kingdom, he had to drop out of the competition after their Backdoor performance. As such, he hadn’t been part of the Mayfly performances. Meanwhile Hyunsik and Sungjae were doing their military service, so they hadn’t even really met the groups on a basic level.

Around half an hour later, Peniel got a text from Seonghwa, saying that he was at the door. Minhyuk went to go to the door to let Seonghwa in as the Company was technically closed today, but BtoB had full time access to the building because of how long they’ve been a group under the company.

While Peniel knew that Seonghwa was bringing his dongsaengs with him, the sight before him was not one he was expecting. Seonghwa was holding Hongjoong on his hip and the leader of the group seemed to be staring at the building in wonder. Yeosang and San were seemingly arguing with Wooyoung, who was stomping his feet on the ground and generally didn’t look happy. Jongho was kind of hiding behind Seonghwa, looking far more shy than he ever did during Kingdom. What really caught Peniel off guard though, was the fact that Yunho and Mingi were about to walk into the street. Yeosang stopped them at the last second by quickly grabbing the backpacks on their backs and pulling them back to the group. San and Seonghwa were also carrying large duffel bags that were full to the brim. Peniel went to the door and quickly unlocked it so he could let the eight men in.

“Thanks so much for agreeing to watch them today. We were originally planning on spending a quiet day in the dorms, but Yeosang, San, and I apparently have a couple of interviews lined up that our manager neglected to tell us about. I promise that they won’t be too much trouble. There’s some food and toys in the bags for them. There’s also a blanket or two if one of them wants to take a nap.” Seonghwa handed the bags he was holding to a confused looking Peniel before also handing over Hongjoong. San did the same. Yeosang and Seonghwa ushered Hongjoong, Jongho, Yunho, and Mingi into the building and Peniel winced as the screaming from Wooyoung got louder.

“Young-ah.” San said in a very stern tone. “I know that our plans today have been changed, but that is no excuse to be throwing a tantrum. Now, I need you to be good for Peniel and the other hyungs. I will ask him how your behaviour was, and if he tells me you were a good boy, we can get ice cream or go to the toy store” Wooyoung sniffled a bit, but seemed to calm down a little. He walked into the building, but he was clearly not happy about it. Before Peniel could ask any questions, Ateez’ manager was honking the horn of the car, signaling that Seonghwa, Yeosang, and San needed to get going. They quickly said goodbye before leaving a very confused Peniel with five dongsaengs acting strangely.

“Okay, let’s go to the elevator I guess.” He said after he relocked the door. He led the group over to the elevator and he wasn’t expecting Yunho and Mingi to start fighting over who gets to press the buttons and he sighed. “Yunho how about you press this button and Mingi, you can press the button inside.” The compromise was enough for the two and the six men got into the elevator. Shortly after Peniel wrangled the five men into the elevator, MInhyuk received a text from Chan saying that they had arrived. Minhyuk went down to greet them.

Like Peniel, Minhyuk was met with a sight that he wasn’t expecting. Jeongin was somehow carrying Hyunjin on his hip while also holding Seungmin’s hand.  Both Hyunjin and Seungmin were looking up at the sky and pointing at something. Minho looked, done, for lack of a better term. He had Changbin and Felix on child leashes as the hyper actively ran around. Chan had Jisung on his hip, and he was also holding a very full duffel bag. Minho had another one.

“Thanks for agreeing to this hyung. I got called in for an emergency meeting with the CEO that starts in half an hour. You’re a lifesaver.” Chan said as he placed the bag he was holding on the ground in the entree way. Jeongin placed Hyunjin down and nudged him and Seungmin inside. Minho sternly told Changbin and Felix to go inside and they did. Minho just kind of dropped the leashes so they were trailing behind them. Minhyuk grabbed them, although he wasn't sure why he did. Chan spoke up one more time.

“Everything they need should be in the bags. If you have any questions, there’s a notebook in one of them. I need you to please take Jisung now.” Minhyuk felt very confused as Chan handed him Jisung. The three that weren't staying left as fast as they could, which confused the rapper even more, until Jisung began crying loudly.

"Changbin-ah, Felix-ah, help with the bags please?" Minhyuk asked. He didn't know what was going on, but those two seemed eager to help. Changbin picked up one bag and grinned.

"Look, I strong." Minhyuk didn't know how to respond to this before bringing the group to the elevator. The ride up the elevator wasn't the slightest bit pleasant. Jisung would not stop screaming and he kept wriggling around. Minhyuk tried placing him on the floor of the elevator, but he continued to scream while trying to pull himself up on Minhyuk's pant leg. Minhyuk picked him up again just before the elevator doors opened and sighed as he tried to come up with any kind of explanation to give the others.

Fortunately or unfortunately, Minhyuk and the five SKZ members walked into a room of chaos. Wooyoung was crying and was trying to open the door which Peniel and Hyunsik were both blocking (Minhyuk had to knock in order to get inside). Hongjoong was crawling around on the floor and almost put his hand in an electrical socket (Sungjae had never moved so fast in his life). Yunho and Mingi were running around like maniacs, tackling each other to the ground in the process. And Jongho was sitting on the couch coloring in a book.

The SKZ members added to the chaos of the room. As soon as the group was inside the room and Peniel and Hyunsik were blocking the door again, Wooyoung once again was trying to run out of the room. Changbin saw what Wooyoung was doing and immediately went to help him. Hyunjin for whatever reason sat on the floor and began crying. Seungmins went over to Jongho. Jisung was still crying with no sign of stopping. Felix tugged on Minhyuk's shirt. Minhyuk looked at the younger.

"Huck, I poopy." Unfortunately, Felix said this in English and Minhyuk had no clue what he had said. Minhyuk, Jisung, and Felix were farther into the room and not within Peniel’s earshot. Minhyuk quickly put Jisung down on the ground, ignoring how his crying got louder. He grabbed Felix’ hand and brought him over to Peniel, who was leaning against the door along with Hyunsik. Although Wooyoung and Changbin had gone from actively trying to leave the room to playing with each other.

“Felix, can you tell Peniel what you told me?” Minhyuk asked. Peniel looked questioningly at Felix, expecting some complex concept that he would need to try to explain.

“Penny, I poopy.” Felix responded happily. Peniel also wasn’t sure how to respond. He didn’t even know what the younger was talking about.

“Did Chan explain anything to you? Cause, Seonghwa didn’t explain anything to me.” Peniel said. The question prompted Minhyuk to run over to the bags Chan had left with him and look for the notebook that was in one of them. When he found the notebook, he opened the notebook and went over to where Changsub and Eunkwang were sitting. He waved over the other three and they quickly looked over the contents. Unfortunately for five of the six members, most of the notebook was in English. Peniel’s face paled a little when it got to a certain part.

“Felix, come here real quick.” Felix happily bounded over and Peniel made a disgusted face while he quickly pulled back Felix’ pants a little. “I will explain things as best I can in a few minutes. First, can one of you find diapers and baby wipes please?”

[COVER STORY] Never Ending Story: Actor Seo Eunkwang

As the leader of an idol group, as a vocalist who gets recognition, as a 10-year musical actor, Seo Eunkwang never treats any dream recklessly and shines today.

In the defining number 'A Musical' from musical "Something Rotten," famous musical numbers are wittily melded together. You may wonder why we're bringing up a past work, but the start of this story was 2 years ago. Back then, in a video interview with Theatre Plus, we asked if there was a musical parodied in that number that Seo Eunkwang would want to participate in, and without hesitation he answered "Jesus Christ Superstar." "It would be so great if I could do that musical with Michael (Lee)," he said and in two years that has become reality.

The musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" was created fifty years ago by the musical world's virtuoso composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice. It interprets the story of the seven days before the death of Jesus from an unconventional perspective, and became a topic as it stood at the center of several controversies. It was a work so ahead of its time that even now, a long time later, you can still feel how unconventional it is. One wonders what kind of message it will throw to the audiences of 2022. We asked Seo Eunkwang, playing the role of Judas, to tell us about this work which is being performed again in Korea after 7 years.

You mentioned that your dream work was "Jesus Christ Superstar" in a number of interviews. How does it feel to have that dream come true?

Like I've said, this is one of the works I wanted to try doing the most, so it makes me want to do a really good job. While I've been doing musicals, I think this is the first one that's made me feel this much pressure. And the thing that adds even more pressure is that this is the 50th anniversary performance. It's even the first time it's been performed (in Korea) in 7 years. Since I know that so many people have so much interest, I'm working very hard to prepare. It's such an honor to be able to participate. I'm very happy.

You mentioned that your dream role was Jesus, but this time you ended up with the role of Judas.

I wondered what kind of feeling it would be to stand onstage as Jesus, and that kind of expectation led me to say I wanted to play Jesus. I'm still not good enough for that role, so I think I'll have to build up more years of experience first. And Judas is very impressive and has a lot of charm, so I'm really into him. The Judas numbers are very intense, so on one hand it's very difficult.

Like you said, this work has a reputation for having very difficult musical numbers. You're famous yourself for being good at singing, but it must feel very different to be engaged in this work.

Since the Judas numbers "Heaven on their Minds" and "Superstar" are so famous, a lot of people probably know them, but as I've actually been starting work on the show, there are also a lot of other difficult songs. I was shocked the first time I started practicing. The number "Judas' Death" which he sings just before dying is incredible. And besides that all the other songs are hard, too. Three or four songs are in the range of the top of the second octave, even playing into the third octave, which is just ridiculous for a male role. It makes me wonder what the composer was thinking when he composed them.

And also all the different Judas actors have interpreted the songs in their own different ways.

That's why practice was so hard. The work itself is very free. The melody line is set, but everyone has sung it with their own style. So after absorbing the sheet music, changing it to fit my own style was really extremely hard. It was my first time doing such a free work, so it was very new for me.

Recently on a livestream you showed yourself practicing "Heaven on their Minds." It was like getting a taste of Seo Eunkwang's Judas.

Now I'd like to delete the video. At the time, after practicing a few songs including Western ones, I started livestreaming because I wanted to show that, but I really regret showing this song in advance. Since I was just practicing, there were a lot of parts that were lacking. It's a relief that the fans like it, but next time I'll have to be more thorough.

Even though it was practice, that in itself makes you feel like it was lacking, I guess.

When singing, I want to show a perfect side of myself. Compared to the past, I've let go a lot. When I was young, I felt that way strongly, but lately I've thought that I wanted to show my growth through even the imperfect side of myself. That's why I showed myself practicing, but afterwards as time has gone on I've felt regretful about it. "I could have done it better," I think.

There are a lot of videos where your fellow BTOB member and musical theater actor Lee Changsub sings the number "Gethsemane." It makes me wonder if the two of you might do this work together someday.

We tend to sing for fun, and we both really like that song. If someday Changsub could play Judas and I could play Jesus and we could stand on stage together, that would be a dream come true. Wow, just imagining it is amazing.

Judas is a person who's remembered as a betrayer. But in this work, he's drawn as a revolutionary, which became a hot topic.

I also only knew Judas as a betrayer. But while preparing for this work, the other day I asked my mom while we were eating. My mom is an elder and is very devout. I asked, "What do you think about Judas?" and what she told me is very similar to how I'm interpreting Judas now. Most people think of him as a betrayer, but how much must he have worried and thought over his decision up until he sold Jesus out, and what kinds of thoughts must he have had when he heard Jesus predict that he would betray him. She told me that must not have been an easy decision, and that put part of my mind at ease. I thought that I could express Judas as much as I wanted and the people watching would fully accept that. I had a lot of worries, but thanks to that I became a bit freer.

What kinds of things were you worrying about?

The hardest part was that the character of Judas isn't explained very well. In the Bible, he's mostly portrayed as a traitor, so most of the audience will come in with only that background for him. You can't help but come in with those biases. But within this work, rather than being a betrayer, he loves Jesus so much and reveals his own beliefs so strongly, and those beliefs are so clear. So my homework was to portray that well. Also my own image tends to be strongly of someone very bright and happy, on top of my build being on the small side, so I worried about how best to capture the character in order to explain him well.

In the role of Jesus, actors Michael Lee and Im Taegyeong have returned. What is the difference between the two Jesuses?

We're still in the practice stage, but I feel like Michael Lee sunbaenim's Jesus feels more like a friend. He mentioned that this season he wanted to show a more human side. So when we practice, I feel those parts and there's a closeness to it. I think Im Taegyeong sunbaenim's Jesus feels a little more divine. Rather than a friend, he feels like a teacher or a father.

It's been 50 years since this work was shown to the world for the first time. Yet the modifier of "unconventional" always seems to follow it even now.

Actually, I had never seen this musical before, myself. It's being performed in Korea for the first time in 7 years, and there aren't a lot of videos. I had only heard of it indirectly, and the reviews of audiences who saw it in the past were quite cutting. People say it's very serious and can be very polarizing, and due to the fact that it's all sung-through people could get bored, and as a rock musical the songs can be unfamiliar. I was also very nervous when practices started, but everything was a lot more fun than I expected.

In particular, I think there are a lot of reviews that say it can be polarizing.

I saw a lot of those reviews, too. But when it actually came down to doing it, it was very fun. Is that because I'm on the "liking it" side of the polarizing divide? (laughs)

Then please appeal to the audiences and tell them why you ended up liking it.

First of all, the development is very clear so the storyline progresses well on its own. The musical numbers are very convincing, as well. Seeing Jesus' more human side is very fresh and shocking, so it's not boring and has a lot of new charm to it. At first when people I knew told me they were going to see this musical, I, too, responded by saying "It's so polarizing, and it can be unfamiliar because it's sung-through." But now I say "Guys, this is so fun! You can expect good things from it," to people. It's a work that's snappy and full of charm.

Have you ever felt, like your character, that you are being led by a fate you can't refuse?

With my personality, I tend to accept things rather than try to refuse them. Even when I'm exhausted, I tend to think that if I can just get through this time then things will get better later. So I don't think I've had very many times when I feel like things are so hard that I break down. I live happily and enjoyably. I like living.

Just because you say you're happy, I'm sure you've still had hard times. How do you get through those times?

Of course I have hard times, too. When that happens, I try to work things out in a good direction, and I think that someday things will get better.

You must have what they call a good mentality about things.

I do think that I do. I've never doubted it.

This year BTOB reached their 10th anniversary. And you're also in your tenth year of doing musicals.

My debut in the group and my debut in musicals were just about a year apart. I've been doing musicals since I was 23, and back then there were a lot of things that were hard. Because I was young and an idol, I got a lot of various attention, and because of that I felt a lot of pressure to do a better job. Now I'm finally in the hyung line! [Someone with relatively more experience who is relatively older.] As I've been consistently working, now there are more people junior to me, so I'm a lot more comfortable now. I've always been the style to be less reserved with people younger than me. And now that I can work again with actors and staff I've already worked with, the practice room has also become more comfortable and I feel like I can try doing more new things.

When you look back, what is the most memorable period for you?

The thing that comes to mind the most is the practice room for my first musical, "Monte Cristo." I remember being so nervous I was shaking like a leaf. Back then I played Albert and Im Taegyeong sunbaenim played the Monte Cristo role with me, so I was so happy to see him again this time. It had been a long time, but I was so thankful that he greeted me so happily.

You've been consistently appearing on the musical stage. What kinds of charms do musicals have that they keep leading you to the stage?

I think the best thing is that through a musical work, you can live as various different people. I don't think I could really perceive it clearly until now, but this time thanks to this work I could strongly feel it. I thought "Wow, the works I've done up until now were really amazing." The thing that played the greatest part in leading me to realize that was Director Hong Seunghui, who is directing this time. The director always tells me to do things the way I want to, and asks me how I feel about each scene. The director tells me to follow my emotions and move the way I feel. I think I was able to immerse myself more in the role when I practiced because I was able to fully become Judas. So with this musical, I think I felt the good points of musicals even more.

So when you approach your character, what point do you start from?

Of course with each character you have to show a different side of yourself, but at first I work hard to find things that go well with me. When I look at myself, the nice way of saying it is that I have a strong identity, and the not-so-nice way of saying it is that I am a person who sticks out a lot. Because Seo Eunkwang is that kind of person, I think that if I only try to match things generally without melding more thoroughly, then I can't blend with the character well. So I try to find and bring out the most Seo Eunkwang-like parts of myself.

So then of the characters you've played so far, who was the most Seo Eunkwang-like one?

The character who fit me best was Nick Bottom from "Something Rotten." I barely had to add anything. I didn't need to immerse myself, he was just me so it was very easy. However, the tap dancing and other dancing, as well as the large amount of lines I had to memorize did make things harder, but when I think of the character it was so much fun. I think it might have been the only work I've done that was that comfortable for me.

With this work, you've achieved a dream of yours. What's your next goal?

I want to try something really shocking. Like Lola in "Kinky Boots."

You always have precise goals. And it seems like your goals are designed to challenge yourself.

I think you should always make goals for yourself. You need to have goals in order to prepare thoroughly and make progress. It's not just for musicals, I can only grow as a vocalist and singer when I make goals for myself, as well. And I always like a challenge. That's more fun, and I think I'm more proud of the result, as well.

Is that the reason that you appear on so many singing competition shows, too?

I went on a lot of them for that reason, but to tell the truth because of that I've been considering things a lot. I feel like I've been showing myself too much lately, and now maybe it's time to take a break for a bit. I asked my vocal teacher about these worries, but my teacher said "Eunkwang, you need to do these in order to grow." A person like me has to make goals and run towards them, as my teacher also knows. In order to even reach the general ballpark, I have to set clear goals and move towards them.

You're the kind of person who whips yourself into shape, I guess.

That's right, that's how I live. That can be my driving force. When I hear compliments, it feels nice, but it doesn't really help me to improve. So I also seek out negative comments. It lets me know what I need to work on. If it's not a helpful comment, I do pass it by, but for some negative comments I feel like if I can take them in, then I can make it so that I won't hear those comments anymore. I try to use them in a positive direction. When I do musicals, I look for a lot of audience reviews. I really look at everything. Be careful, everyone. (laughs)

You'll reach your 10th year anniversary of being a musical actor next year. What kind of musical actor do you want to be remembered as to audiences?

I want to be a truthful actor. An actor whose sincerity can be felt on every stage. And I want to continue to show my growth in the future. Of course I will continue to work hard and do my best. Since I'll continue to stand on stage and pour my heart into it, please continue to support me. And I'd like it if a lot of people could get good energy from me. As someone who is living through this time, I want to show that I'm living my life to the fullest. Let's all live the best we can.

We finally have a NCT bday to celebrate, the messiest queen to come from NCT as my sister likes to call him. November 22nd, 2001 we were blessed with his appearance into the world. Not even getting into his vocals, without him we wouldn’t have some of the most convoluted relationships in NCT. He’s somehow both Taeyong and Kun’s child, but Mark and Daegal’s dad, which makes him Haechan’s father in law. Does it make sense? No. Do we care? Also no!

November 22nd seems to be short vocal king day, because we also have Eunkwang from BTOB (born 1990), Kihyun from Monsta X (born 1993) and Woozi from Seventeen (born 1996). We truly have been blessed this day.

There are a few other bdays today, but we’ll keep it short and only mention poor sweet naive Dongwoo from Infinite. Buddy, I hope you still maintain your innocence even after getting scammed three (three!) times the exact same way. Don’t ever change.

A ⇴ ATTENTION

It was pretty much a guarantee that if you were around, then Eunkwang would be watching you. If he couldn’t spot you, he’d be up on his tiptoes and looking around the room until his eyes landed on where you were.

B ⇴ BICKER

You were childish anyway, but Eunkwang’s childish nature definitely made things ten times worse with you. You loved to try and annoy one another and squabbling with each other was one of the biggest ways that you did that, deciding to go on and on until eventually you ended up running out of breath.

C ⇴ COMFORT

As much as you both loved to laugh, when things got serious, Eunkwang would be the perfect support for you. He knew that he could easily make you laugh, but actually what Eunkwang wanted to do more was be there and be someone that you could talk to and turn to for advice more than that.

D ⇴ DISAGREEMENTS

You both hated disagreeing with one another, and when you did, your arguments never tended to last too long. You would go quiet for a little while and not talk to one another but with how close the two of you were it wouldn’t take long before one of you had to cave. Usually, it would be Eunkwang who would end up spamming your phone with texts and calls until you eventually decided to reply to him.

E ⇴ EARLY YEARS

Everything just seemed to click for the two of you pretty much from the off. You could hardly even remember getting to know Eunkwang as he just made you so comfortable when you first met almost as if the two of you had known each other for years. He made getting to know him the easiest job in the world because Eunkwang just knew how to make you relax, but most importantly he made you smile.

F ⇴ FAMILY

Eunkwang’s family got along with you incredibly well, they all loved seeing the dynamic between the two of you especially. You were wary to meet them at the start of your friendship because you knew how close Eunkwang was to all of them. But actually, as soon as you met them those nerves disappeared as they warmed to you straight away, chuckling almost immediately at how silly you and Eunkwang were.

G ⇴ GETTING TOGETHER

Although you didn’t mind going out when you hung out, a part of Eunkwang would always be wary as he couldn’t help but protect you. His eyes would never be able to concentrate for too long as he’d worry about someone getting too close or saying something to you when you decided to head out together.

H ⇴ HABITS

The two of you had a habit of teasing the other boys and trying your best to wind them up. Eunkwang was usually the one that got teased, but when you were around things usually changed as you knew exactly how to push the buttons of the other members which Eunkwang joined in with as well.

I ⇴ INSIDE JOKES

It was inevitable for the two of you to have inside jokes, you both knew the perfect way to tickle one another. You were constantly laughing around Eunkwang, and although most of your inside jokes were about someone else or something you’d seen, you definitely had someone where you’d laughed at him too.

J ⇴ JEALOUSY

He didn’t like to show you that he felt jealous at any time, but you could definitely tell when Eunkwang was a little bit rattled. He would get a little bit shorter and a little bit snappier when he was jealous, usually with the person that was winding him up. The thing that always made you laugh though was the fact that Eunkwang was often in denial about the fact that he ever got jealous when you asked him.

K ⇴ KICKS

Eunkwang got a kick out of making you smile, he loved cheering you up and seeing you happy, especially if you were laughing too. He didn’t need anything grand to get a kick out of being with you, just simply being able to brighten up your day even just a tiny little thing was just about the only thing that he needed.

L ⇴ LOVE

He loved spending time with, it was just the simple things for Eunkwang when hanging out with you. It was almost a feeling of content that came for Eunkwang when he was with you, almost as if he didn’t have a single thing to worry about in the world. He didn’t need to do anything to get a satisfaction from spending time with you, in fact doing nothing was exactly what Eunkwang needed sometimes.

M ⇴ MEETING

The two of you first met when you both started as trainees, joining the company on the very same day together. Although your careers took slightly different paths once you started taking different classes and meeting some of the other trainees too, neither of you ever ended up forgetting about one another.

N ⇴ NONSENSE

There was no difference between Eunkwang on camera and off camera, what everyone else saw was exactly what you got as his best friend, some thought maybe he was a character, but he was anything but.

O ⇴ OBSESSION

Eunkwang was obsessed with your friendship and how well the two of you were there for one another. He definitely never imagined himself having a best friend who was as close to him as you were.

P ⇴ PRECIOUS MOMENTS

Nothing made Eunkwang prouder than when he was able to see you doing well, especially when you were performing. He tried to make it to as many of your events as possible to be able to cheer you on, and if he couldn’t, he’d take the time to watch a video of a fan cam at home to watch you perform instead.

Plenty of random questions came your way from Eunkwang, you were like a dump for all the nonsense in his brain. Your eyes rolled most often when he asked questions because of how silly some of them were.

In his apartment, Eunkwang had a drawer in his wardrobe filled of your things so that you always had the essentials there for when you stayed over. He didn’t mind too much as he didn’t have too many things himself, but also, he loved it because it meant that he never had to share his belongings with you.

Your support was something that Eunkwang never took for granted, he always made sure to thank you and appreciate your support. Sometimes he would just simply tell you thank you, other times he would surprise you with a treat or a gift to let you know just how much he really does appreciate your support.

Whenever the two of you had the time, you’d go off on an adventure together. You loved escaping for a little while and finding a new spot, even if it was just around Seoul, that you could spend some time in.

U ⇴ ULTIMATE

As much as he didn’t like to admit, Eunkwang knew how lucky he was to have a best friend like you always looking out for him.

Both of you had a habit of visiting each other. If you were around and knew Eunkwang was working, you’d try and stop by, just like if he was free and knew that you were in the studio, he’d definitely pop in too.

Eunkwang himself was so welcoming and fun, never afraid to break the ice, his kindness, caring and experience really shone so bright. He’s so talented, charismatic and humorous, he has vocals to die for and his leadership skills are top notch.
