diluc ragnvindr x reader
warnings: none, just fluff, diluc just raising my standards higher by the second.
happy birthday, mr husband. thank you for making me simp so hard that i can't even concentrate on studying for my semester exams tomorrow. WHAT IS THAT BIRTHDAY ART?! IT'S ILLEGAL.
Tumblr media
the whole of mondstadt witnessed how their uncrowned king fell in love.
for them, it was like watching a romance movie, seeing how the main character slowly changed, bit by bit.
at first, the glance that was directed at you was of indifference, diluc just noting what drink you wanted as you stuttered it out from beside lisa, pushing your drink towards you before tending to another customer.
then was the look that showed acknowledgement when lisa introduced you as a junior from sumeru, who came to mondstadt to work under her. all he did was nod, sparing you a glance. nothing more, nothing less.
the next change in the way he looked towards you was something a lot of people noticed, but only one witnessed. the way he looked and acknowledged you with respect everytime you passed him, giving a small nod whenever your gazes met. the reason will always remain a mystery to the people of the city of freedom.
not to a certain cat allergic archon, though. he did not mean to pry, but who in their right mind would ignore a scene that played straight out of a novel when you happened to stumble upon it? not him, definitely.
so he watched, slowly sipping from his bottle as you patched the cat that diluc was holding, eyes blown wide with panic but hands as steady a mountain. he did not know what happened before, but it wasn't hard to guess.
though, even the bard wasn't so nosy as to look on when diluc's gaze shifted from the cat to you.
the change from respect to adoration was gradual, but not subtle by any means.
the more the time the two of you spent together, the stronger the gaze grew. it still held the respect from before, but the adoration just settled in alongside it, never to leave.
it was kaeya who got to witness the addition of absolute tenderness in his brother's eyes. he was heading back towards his quarters after a stroll with sister rosaria, that's when he noticed you both, lost in each other's embrace. so much so that even as a drunkard passed you, loudly singing, neither of you even showed a sign of breaking the hug.
the tenderness directed towards you when the hug finally broke sent kaeya back to his childhood, when his big brother had almost the same look but directed towards him. that was when he knew that the dark knight hero did not have any plans to let you go.
affection that made it's way into the eyes of the eldest son of ragnvindr was what adelinde noticed first.
the night was cold, strong winds and heavy rain hit mondstadt. she was waiting for the winery's master to come back, towel ready in hand.
soon enough, he did return but with his hand clutching onto a figure behind him, both panting heavily as their clothes dripped the water down onto the carpet.
ever the gentleman, diluc thanked her politely before grabbing the towel from her hands and leading you towards the fireplace, making you sit in front of it while drying your hair with the towel in his hands.
the head maid was about to leave but the look in her young master's eyes made her feet freeze to the ground, heart fluttering as she witnessed them shine after almost 4 years.
adelinde hoped with all her heart that you would never leave the red haired man behind before she strolled back to her bedroom.
the love that spread into his gaze was for only you to witness.
love that sent your head reeling as soon you your eyes fluttered open, still in his embrace as he slowly cupped your cheek. the small, soft smile that settled onto his face was enough to send your heart into a rampage, feeling both as if you're drowning but also as if the you took a breath of the most fresh air this world possibly had to offer, simultaneously.
the chuckle that left him when you cuddled into his embrace, hiding your face in his chest, did not make it any better.
your situation only worsened when he pressed a sweet kiss onto your head and pulled you closer, whispering;
'wish i could stay like this forever.'
this man was a hazard to your heart.

Happy Birthday, Diluc
character x gn reader | diluc drabbles
warning:  sfw-fluff-birthday wishes <3-pre-relationship because I’m a sucker
Tumblr media
You wanted to be the first person to tell him Happy Birthday which was why you woke up before the sun to trek across Mondstadt toward Dawn Winery. It was a chilly morning. Spring had come weeks ago but the cool wind of winter still clung to the trees, the grass. You shivered and pulled your light jacket around you more.
Initially, you planned on leaving it at the front entrance but when you got close you noticed a figure standing above the vineyards and somewhere in the back of your mind you knew it was him. You’d know Diluc for years now, loved him just as long, so you knew his Birthday wasn’t enjoyable for him. If there was any place for him to brood, or contemplate another passing year, it would be far out of sight of those whose expectations of him were extensive.
The climb didn’t take you very long but it still winded you. You definitely wanted to have your breath back before approaching him. Unfortunately for you, there was something else in the woods that’s plans were very different from your own.
Carefully, you placed the present on the roots of a large tree as you took in deep breaths. Your face was hot you were appreciative of the cold air. You were about to pick yourself up when a shadow shot through the treetop, snagged the carefully wrapped package and flew off into the distance. You yelped, startled by its sudden appearance before dashing after it. “HEY!” Sprinting, you chased after the shadow when you realized it was headed in the direction of the figure you noticed below and, as your assumptions panned out, the shadow soon landed on the arm of Diluc Ragnvindr.
You skidded to a halt which kicked up dust and rocks beneath your feet. The disruption caused the eagle to screech in alarm before flying off - your present still held in its talons. “Ah -- wait ---” you lamented as the bird soared into the sky, out of your reach.
“Huh?” Diluc turned toward you and you did your best to compose yourself, push aside the sorrow you felt about your gift. “When she suddenly flew off, I thought she had discovered a hidden foe. Turns out ... it was just you,” he was standing beside a large boulder and appeared to have been leaning against his based on how he repositioned to look at you. The eagle called out to him and he glanced into the sky to find her.
“Sorry, I think I startled her or something --” you explained and moved toward him, “though ... your present ..” you mumbled.
“Present?” he asked, confused by the idea you’d bring him something - that’s when it seemed to click in his mind, “Oh.”
“Yeah.”
The two of you looked into the sky, though it was hard for you to find her, Diluc didn’t have any issues as his head tracked her across the darkness above. “Hah, I guess she really likes you. I hope you don't mind that it took off with the present you brought. Thanks.”
His reassurance put you at ease and, even though you weren’t sure when his eagle would return with the gift you got him, you felt there was a high chance he’d get it in the end.
“You’re welcome. Um, --” You weren’t sure what to do with yourself. This wasn’t the original plan. Your intention was to drop of the gift as his home and leave but now you were left alone with him and it seemed presumptuous to overstay your welcome. Diluc was a private person. He kept to himself and you made sure to give him space. There were never any social expectations you had - in fact, you rather enjoyed just sitting in the same room with him without a single word being shared. You wanted to excuse yourself, but weren’t sure how. “Um --”
Diluc turned back toward the horizon, his gaze contemplative, “Since it's still early,” he started, interrupting your thoughts, “why not take advantage of the time to watch Mondstadt's sunrise together? Long nights are always followed by a magnificent sunrise,” he hummed with a slight smile. Even thought the sun had barely touched the horizon, you swore there was a sparkle in his eyes. A burning flicker that only he could comfortably hold. When he turned to you, your heart flipped - by the archons you loved him so. “I think you'll enjoy it.”
“Of course,” you practically beamed, your heart thumping in your chest, smile stretching your lips. A soft laugh spilled from you as you eagerly moved toward him.
With ease, Diluc extended his hand. There was no question in taking it. Soon he escorted you to the other side of the rock so you could sit beside him. You noted how observant he was, how he steadied his weight to ensure he could catch you if you tripped, that he could steady you if you were to wobble. He was always looking out for you as if it were the most natural thing in the world to do.
“Steady,” he reminded you while you took up the spot next to him. His warm breath spread across your cheek, you squeezed his hand a little more at the sensation.
“Okay... thank you.”
“Mmm,” he kept his fingers loose, palm up so he could push against your weight as you sat down. His thumb pressed against the back of your hand and you wished you could take hold of it completely. You weren’t sure how close you could sit, but the rock wasn’t that big so you ended up bumping against his leg.
“Sorry, I’m too close-”
“It’s alright, I don’t mind,” he cut you off, holding your hand so you couldn’t move away. “Are you comfortable?” You nodded so he looked toward the sunrise, his lips turned up ever so slightly. Nervously, you stole a glance at him - you were hardly ever this close, so it seemed a waist not to look at the man who held your attention every hour of every single day of your life. His cheeks were tinted pink, most likely due to the chill of the morning air; when he breathed there was a puff of white mist that dissipated quickly. You took in his every feature and made yourself shiver.
Suddenly, he picked up the long red jacket laying behind him and carefully draped it over your shoulders, “Take this, it wouldn’t be good to let you catch a cold.”
“It’s still chilly in the morning, I should have thought to wear something better,” you laughed, embarrassed that you didn’t come prepared. Though you didn’t intend to spend this much time outside. It was hard enough brining him the gift you fussed over for weeks; now you were next to him, watching the sunrise draped in his scent.
Warmth spread across your back as he assisted you in putting it on. You wrapped it around your chest, contemplated putting your arms through the sleeves but found that too intimate. While you were thinking, Diluc slipped his fingers under the coat near the based of your neck so he could fix the collar, making sure it wasn’t snagged anywhere.
Your insides caught on fire so much that it burned away your ability to reply to his question, “Does it fit alright?” You nodded, “Good.”
The wind blew up from the cliffside, a rush of cold and wet from the water below but you weren’t affected by it in the slightest. Instead, you felt engulfed in heat that only occurred because of him.
The two of you sat in comfortable silence for a while. The quiet of the morning mixed with sounds of creatures rising from their sleep. Every once in a while you’d hear the gentle clink of Diluc’s clothes in the wind. Even though it was cold, and the rock you sat on wasn’t that comfortable, you wouldn’t trade this moment for anything in the world and, when the dawn came, you felt it in your chest.
Emboldened, you twisted so you could look at him. Every fiber of your being was screaming but you fought through the nerves and worries. Your hand pushed against the rock so you could reach his cheek and press a gentle kiss against it. He was so warm, or maybe that was you. Slowly, you moved back just enough for him to turn his head. Your voice shook but you spoke anyway, “Happy Birthday, Diluc.”
He searched your face as if looking for an answer you weren’t sure you could give him. Though an apology was bubbling to the surface with every passing second. You wished he would look away, wished he would close his eyes so you could breathe - so you did.
Anxious, you looked back over the horizon and soaked up the view, “I - um - wanted to be the first to tell you and, well, since my gift was spirited away, that’s the best I can give for now.” You could still feel his skin on your lips, it took everything you had not to touch them with your cold fingers. “You’re right by the way,” you said, hands gripping the rock, toes pushing into the dirt to keep yourself steady, head turning just enough to look at him with a side-ways glance, “it is a magnificent sunrise.”
Diluc was still staring at you but this time his expression wasn’t one of confusion. This time it was one of understanding, one of conviction, one that drew closer to your face until you tried to shy away from it. He wouldn’t let you go though, and with a simple push of his finger under your chin, he held you inches away in complete and total certainty. “Mmm, truly ... magnificent ...” he whispered above your lips before closing the distance.
When he pulled away you were left agape, frozen by the sensation of him. Only your quick breaths seemed to show you were still alive. No wonder fairy tells say a kiss from your true love can revive the dead.
Diluc pulled back to check on you, his thumb ran across your cheek, his breath warmed your skin. If your eyes were open they would have seen his examining every inch of you, “Are you alright?” he asked, concern in his voice.
You nodded and tried to speak, “mmhm, I’m just -- trying to catch my breath,” you explained breathlessly, a smile tugging at your cheeks from the giddy energy rushing through your veins.
“Take your time,” he reassured you, his forehead resting on yours, thumb still stroking your face ever so slowly.
“You know --” you gasped, shaking your head slightly, “you’re supposed to get gifts on your birthday, not give them.”
“Ah - well, you see,” he replied as he lifted your chin again, “this is a gift for me,” you sighed as his thumb passed over your lips, your fingers found his leg and held on for stability, “one I’ve wanted for a very long time.” He closed the distance but not before you sucked in cold air only for him to steal it from you moments later. Diluc kissed you, and didn’t stop until you whispered his name.
---
He never intended to let his feelings for you overflow the way there were now. Protecting you was his top priority. For so long he thought that meant keeping you at a safe distance. Watching you from afar, being present in a room where you existed was enough for him but, as soon as you kissed him he knew there was no more holding back - he was a man of strong will, but that will was unstable when it came to you.
As he pulled back from the fourth, fifth kiss - he lost track - he watched how you reacted to him, felt how you gripped his clothes, chuckled at how adorable you looked in the shifting colors of the dawn. He had loved you for so long, and to receive your love on this of all days - it was the best birthday gift he could ever ask for.
but
he wondered just how many times he could kiss you until it was too much. Until he’d have to let you go. Logically he knew that moment would come and, even though he rationally understood that now he could kiss you whenever he wanted -- it seemed an impossible task to stop once he started.

Also, I know the ages here aren't accurate to canon, but who can say no to baby Ragbros?

Diluc would rather everyone forget his birthday altogether. For him, there’s no excitement attached to it. It’s just another day at best, and a grievous day that pushes hurtful memories closer to the forefront at worst. And a part of you would really like to just respect his wishes and leave well enough alone. . . But there’s a feeling that eats away at you each and every time you think about letting the day pass by with nothing to offer him. There’s something inside that tells you to give it a chance, even against your better judgment.
You don’t have to specify anything, after all. There’s no rulebook saying you have to make everything explicitly about his birthday on that day. While it may be the driving force, there’s no harm in skirting around that little bump in the road! Insisting he’s been working too hard won’t be a lie, either. After all, Diluc seldom gives himself a break. It’s one thing after another for him, morning, noon, and night. So, this will be killing more than a few birds with a single stone. Who knows; Diluc might just as well let his birthday slip his mind, leaving you with all the freedom in the world to ease him down without a fight.
You float the idea by him a few nights before, just to give him a proper heads up. He doesn’t bite as quickly as you’d like, but hey, he’s always been a rather stubborn man. . . At least, he has been in the years that you’ve known him personally, anyway. You’re well aware that things have changed drastically since he was that starry-eyed eighteen year old knight.
“For the whole day?” He asks.
“Well. . . Yes, but doesn’t it sound nice? And besides that, you’ve been working yourself to the bone lately,” you comment in reply. “You’ve come to bed late five nights in a row now.”
“It’s springtime. This time of year is when Dandelion Wine is the freshest, so Dawn Winery always sees a spike in business,” he explains.
“I know, I know,” you assure him, “you’re busy, and I respect that! I really do! But even internationally renowned wine tycoons need a break every now and again.”
“Especially,” you add, slipping your arms around his neck in order to give him your very best attempt at puppy-dog eyes, “when they also double as Mondstadt’s Darknight Hero.”
If it were anyone else, he’d be scoffing at the title. But, even Diluc has to admit that it sounds appealing when it falls from your lips. Or, maybe he’s just too infatuated to think of it as anything less when it comes from you.
He sighs, and you can tell he’s weighing his options. His birthday seems to be the furthest thing from his mind, as much as you can see. If he’s caught on, he’s not letting it show, and either way you’re fine with it. If playing a little game of pretend from start to finish is what he needs to make himself feel secure, you’ll put on the performance of a lifetime! Just as long as it gets him away from the winery for the day.
“I’ll need to make some arrangements,” he says, and you catch sight of the softest smile as it pulls ever so slightly on the corners of his lips, “but if everything checks out, I’m all yours for the day. Alright?”
So much better than alright. You’ve been his lover for more than two years now, but you’ve come to the conclusion many times over that you’ll likely never get used to the way he looks at you like you put the stars in the sky with your very own hands. He still gives you butterflies.
“Okay,” you confirm.
Your arms fall away, but when you go to turn around, Diluc reaches out for your wrist. It confuses you for a moment or two until his head tilts just a centimeter or two and one of his eyebrows raises. You giggle, lighting up inside as you catch on. Diluc hums softly in delight when your lips brush his, as if saying thank you.
It was a lucky break that his birthday fell on a Saturday this year. Sleeping in with him at your side for what felt like the first time in forever was the perfect way to start the day off. His red hair tousled, falling over his eyes even more so when he sought your warmth, reaching out to pull you closer to his chest. . . There’s nothing quite like that feeling, and of that, you’re positive.
“I know you want to go out today, but really, I’d be happy laying here like this all day,” he admits, voice laced with sleep.
“Me too,” you answer, pressing a few feather-light kisses to the column of his neck, “but I requested a special breakfast, and it’d be rude not to go down and enjoy it.”
Ever the mannered man when it comes to the hard work of others, Diluc agrees, and soon enough the two of you sit down for a rather light breakfast. There’s a reason for that, of course, on account of the plans you have laid out for the day; but DIluc doesn’t mind either way, as he’s accustomed to going without breakfast completely on most occasions. You’ve asked him not to a number of times, but a workaholic like him often gets caught up in the hassle of it all, so you can’t blame him too much for not listening. Today, at least, you know he’s going to eat well.
“So,” he asks when the both of you head out the door, “what’s the plan for today?”
“You’ll see as we go along,” you assure him, “for now, let’s take a walk to the city! We can do some shopping if you’d like.”
Though Diluc is extremely wealthy, you didn’t know that at first. In fact, he doesn’t live a lavish lifestyle at all, which made it that much more jarring to learn that he’s actually one of the richest people in Teyvat. With his inherited winery selling bottles for as far as the land stretches, Teyvat’s undeniable love of alcohol, in spite of Diluc’s distaste for it, has given him more than enough Mora to live comfortably on.
He doesn’t tend to spend much on himself, which is why you’ve given yourself the mission of paying close attention to the smallest of interests he might show in anything at all today.
The walk there is refreshing. Spring air whispers by, and a few bright yellow butterflies catch your gaze. Diluc doesn’t seem to pay them much mind, but you can tell he’s relaxed by the loose grip he holds on your hand. He isn’t the most outwardly expressive person, but he feels a lot. . . Much more than the average person might expect of him, and you love that side of him.
“Flora’s flowers are pretty, don’t you think?” You ask, giving the redhead a sweet smile.
“I do,” he nods. “Actually, I’ve always wanted to add flowers around the winery. It looks a little bland during the warmer months, I’d like to spruce it up for everyone. I’ve wanted to since I took it over, but it always slips my mind when I have the time.”
It was one of those things that he just never got around to. Those aren’t as few and far between as he’d like to think.
“That sounds lovely,” you agree. “What kind of flowers are you thinking? Ones from Mondstadt, or maybe Liyue?”
“Mondstadt,” he confirms, as if he’d thought about it a million times over and had long since decided on the answer.
An answer that he just hadn’t ever gotten around to solidifying.
“The Windwheel Aster flowers. I’ve always liked the color, and the way they move when the wind blows by. I used to pick them when I was young. . .”
With Kaeya, he thinks, but doesn’t say it. Though their relationship is rocky, he loves Kaeya, and a part of him wishes they were still those little kids sometimes; watching Windwheel Aster flowers spin in the breeze. But that’s a conversation for another day entirely.
“I think they’d look beautiful,” you say, giving his hand a little squeeze.
It’s reassuring. It makes him think that even if you’ve seen right through him enough to know his thoughts, that you’re still willing to love him in spite of the rifts he’s played parts in forming. If nothing else, it soothes his aching soul to a dull ache. It drowns that guilty scream that plays on his tongue.
“I’m glad you think so,” he says.
As the two of you admire Flora’s collection of flowers, a buzz begins to hum about Mondstadt’s citizens. You already know what the cause of it is, but you play dumb for the sake of giving nothing away. Surprises are more fun when nothing is spoiled, after all!
“Should we go check things out?” You inquire, to which Diluc shrugs.
“If you’d like,” he answers.
There’s a glint of curiosity in his eyes.
“Go on ahead and I’ll catch up in a moment,” you say as you pull your hand from his grasp.
He looks confused, but doesn’t bother to question it. As long as you’ll be catching up with him quickly, he doesn’t mind; both because he trusts you and because he’s perfectly fine with it. He knows Mondstadt better than anyone, after all.
As soon as he’s out of earshot, you’re requesting a dozen or so Windwheel Aster flowers to be delivered to Dawn Winery. Flora obliges with a smile.
“Would you like a note to be written to go along with the delivery?” She inquires.
“Ah, yes please,” you nod. “Just some simple directions to plant them around the manor.”
You hand Mora over, and that’s that. Simple as can be, you smile to yourself as you make your way back to Diluc’s side. The buzz was created by a certain bard dressed in green with a set of braids framing either side of his face. As an avid lover of Dandelion Wine, Diluc knows Venti perhaps a bit too well. Still, despite their history, your lover has seldom heard Venti play songs on his lyre, and most of the time when he has, Venti’s been too drunk to play properly.
This time is different, though. Everything is going according to plan so far, and the bard seems to be as sober as you’ve ever seen him (and thankfully so.) Even when you’d requested this of him, he’d been a little tipsy; and you’d had to track him down at the tavern to top it all off. A part of you was worried he wouldn’t even remember the deal in the first place.
All worries placed to the wayside now, you’re left with Diluc at your side. Venti’s eyes scan over the gathered crowd, a smile gracing his lips when he catches sight of you. And then he begins; skilled fingers dancing about the strings of his instrument. It’s a beautiful melody, requested to be soft, but airy and happy. It’s the kind of music Diluc enjoys, though that might come as a shock to those that don’t know him very well. He may well come across as a jaded young man with a preference for all things rough around the edges, —but at heart, he’s a rather gentle person who just wants to keep those he cares for safe.
Venti’s song arouses something inside Diluc, —something he hasn’t tapped into since he was a young adult. Not that it was very long ago. . . Just a few years, but it feels like an eternity ago by now. He’d sealed that part of him away, maybe to protect it from danger, or maybe to force himself to forget that he’d been a person who could be easily scarred and wounded at some point in time.
His hand reaches out for yours before he has the mind to process all the feelings that run both icy cold and burning hot through him. Though he’d been certain the vein leading to his most tender spots had long since been mined dry, this moment is forcing him to reconcile with the idea that that bright, starry-eyed boy still lives inside him.
It scares him.
But the smile you give him when you intertwine your fingers with his leaves him wondering if it’s all that bad. Maybe it’s a good thing, in some roundabout way. Maybe it’s okay for that inner optimist to linger, as long as you love him as much as you love the realist and the pessimist that all coincide with him.
Diluc doesn’t say it, but he’s thankful you’re here with him now. He’s thankful for the warmth of your palm as it seeps into him, comforting him in ways he’s not sure words ever could.
Tumblr media
As the morning bleeds into late afternoon, you ask Diluc if he’s hungry.
“A bit,” he admits, “all this walking around has worked off breakfast, I think.”
Luckily for him, you’ve planned a peaceful picnic lunch for the two of you that you asked Sara from Good Hunter to prepare for you in advance. Sticky honey roast to share with satisfying salads to add some fresh, crisp flavors to the meal; with a bottle of Diluc’s favorite grape juice to wash it all down with. It might be a strange combination, but you couldn’t think of anything more fitting for the occasion than his favorite drink.
“Thank you for this, Sara,” you flash her a bright smile, “I really appreciate your help!”
“I think everyone in Mondstadt agrees that Mr Diluc deserves a nice birthday celebration that lets him rest and relax for the day,” she replies. “No need to thank me at all, especially when both of you have always been so kind. Please, enjoy your meal and the rest of your day, y/n.”
You are incredibly determined to do so. Even more than that, you’re determined to make sure Diluc enjoys his birthday, even if he actually did forget that it’s today. No matter; you’re keen on making memories with him that he and you alike will be able to look back on fondly! That’s the most important part.
“Let’s pick a place to sit down and eat,” you smile.
He returns it, albeit much softer than your own, and agrees. He chooses a place close to Windrise where the sun’s light doesn’t reach beneath a patch of trees. The warmth doesn’t cease there, however, it still seems to bubble up in lighter wisps from the Earth. You sit alongside your red haired lover as he munches down cutely on slices of sticky honey roast. The sauce pools along the side of his mouth as he chews, and you giggle at the sight. If he didn’t look so mature, he might be mistaken for a small child eating like that.
“What?” He blanks, mumbling around a mouthful of food.
You break into a grin.
“Nothing, nothing,” you reach out, cleaning the side of his lips with a few swipes of your thumb. “You’re just cute is all.”
He swallows.
“. . . Cute?”
It’s far from the first time you’ve said that to him, but it catches him off guard in a way no other time has. Though he doesn’t let it show, his heart is skipping beats in his chest. He loves you, and in moments like this, it washes over him like a heavy tide. It drowns him, pulls him down, deeper into the depths of these feelings that he still isn’t quite used to after all this time. All Diluc really knows for certain is that he cares for you in a way he’s never cared for anyone, and he’d go to the ends of Teyvat to keep you close to him.
“Very cute,” you correct yourself playfully.
His heart prickles, —swells with all the feelings he’s still secretly afraid of,— beating like a drum.
“I. . .” He pauses for a moment or two, as if questioning himself, but makes the quick decision to go through with it in spite of his hesitancy. “I think you’re cute as well. Very cute.”
It’s your heart’s turn to be flipped upside down and inside out.
He doesn’t say things like that often, which is fine, —but when he does, it always sets you on fire.
“Are you having fun today?” You ask him, hoping to ease your quickening pulse.
Diluc takes a sip of his grape juice.
“Yes,” he confirms. “I am. I’ll admit, I had my reservations about taking a day off like this, but. . . It feels nice. Even more so, this is the first time I’ve felt at ease on my birthday since my father passed.”
The comment catches you off guard, though you feel like it shouldn’t have. Diluc is good with dates, good with schedules, and it’s unsurprising that he knew all along what you were trying to pull. Still, the fact that he went along with it means more to you than you’d ever be able to articulate.
“I was almost hoping you didn’t realize,” you admit a bit awkwardly.
“I was dreading it, actually,” he says in that characteristically blunt fashion. “I have for several years now. It drudges up feelings that I’d rather keep buried. . . Feelings I’d rather avoid, even though I know I’ll have to face them head on eventually.”
“You don’t have to do that alone, you know,” you assure him. “I’m here for you, for better or worse. In sickness and in health and all that stuff.”
He lets out a low chuckle, and despite the sullen conversational topic, you find it incredibly attractive.
“You make it sound like we’re getting married,” he comments.
You’re fine with the way things are. Dating is enough, and marriage is something you’d be fine without in the long run, just as long as you can have Diluc by your side. Still, the mention of it makes your heart thud.
“Thank you, though,” he adds. “It. . . It means a lot to me. I know I don’t always make sure you know that I love you, and I should say it more. Actions aren’t always enough, and I’m learning how to mend the things I can’t fix with those alone.”
“Hey,” you nudge him lightheartedly, “it’s illegal to be sad on your birthday. I know it must be hard, especially after everything that happened but. . . It’s your day. Nobody should take that away from you. Your dad would definitely want you to be able to celebrate happily.”
Diluc smiles fondly. He knows you’re right. His father was a good man, —no way in Celestia’s name would he want his son to be broken and shattered on his birthday, incapable of celebrating the life his father cherished so dearly when he was alive.
“I know that,” Diluc acknowledges, pulling you closer to him.
You twist your body enough to wrap one of your arms around his neck.
“Thank you for reminding me.”
He places a gentle kiss on your temple, to emphasize his thanks.

“It’s getting late,” he says when the sun begins to make its way out of the sky. “We should probably be getting back.”
“Actually, there’s one more thing before that,” you say as you reach out for his hand.
He lets you take it, —lets you lead him with no complaints. It’s all part of that whole trust thing that he’s admittedly still getting used to.
This is undoubtedly going to be the best part. It was the one you spent the most time on, just for him. . . By the time Dawn Winery is in view, the sun has fully set and dusk has overtaken. Small, almost obsolete, stars shimmer in the sky overhead.
He looks at you like you put them there, saying: “I thought you wanted to go somewhere else?”
“The last thing is just up here,” you assure him. “This is where we had our first date, after all.”
He remembers it like it was yesterday. He remembers the way you laughed when he made poor attempts to tell jokes, hoping to lighten the anxious mood. His humor was dry, so much so that it took you a moment to realize he was kidding around. And then you faked a laugh. It was painfully artificial, but he was sold hook, line, and sinker right there. You matched his vibe, made him comfortable enough to lower his walls; if only a little. You seemed to see right through him in a way nobody else ever had.
He needed that.
He remembers that first date like the back of his hand. Diluc remembers the way he flushed red when his hand brushed against yours on accident, —when you mistook it for affection and took hold of his pinkie finger. Softly, so softly, like you were scared it would shatter if you held it too tightly. . . Like you were scared he would shatter if you pushed it too far. Somewhere between that fake laugh and that awkward finger-holding, he fell. Hard. Fast. Like it had all happened in the blink of an eye, and suddenly he didn’t feel so alone anymore.
“Y/n. . .”
The way he says your name makes your soul shiver. It drips with sweetness, —with the kind of exasperation that feels elating.
The glow of the Lamp Grass petals in the moonlight glimmers off his scarlet eyes, reflecting in his gaze like Starfell Lake to shimmering sunshine. Diluc can feel his heart thundering inside the cavern of his chest. It feels so loud to him that he wonders if you can hear it too.
“Mind doing me a little favor, Mr Pyro Vision?” You ask, holding a small matchstick up to him.
He doesn’t know what it’s for, but does as you request. The flame flickers.
“Look up,” you request.
A symphony of colors bursts into the open air: light pinks, pale oranges, soft yellows, and one very intense, deep shade of red. The fireworks explode in heart shapes, one after the other, giving the effect of a pulsing heart. It’s magical, just as Yoimiya promised you it would be. You knew your contact with her would come in handy eventually.
“Wow,” you hear Diluc whisper just under his breath.
He doesn't take his eyes away until the final spark has descended from the sky. He didn’t even notice that you’d slipped away for a quick few moments as the fireworks were going off. By the time he looks down again, you’ve got a perfectly wrapped gift in your hands. Marjorie really knows her stuff when it comes to gift wrapping. It was Mora well spent to have the present look so stunning for him.
“I thought you said there was only one more thing?” Diluc says, but a smile tugs at his lips.
“Little white lie,” you giggle. “But this is it. Promise.”
He unwraps the present to reveal a new chess board, one that looks far fancier than any one he’s ever seen before. The pieces are very obviously hand carved, and there’s a gentle glitter to them that seems to sparkle in the moonlight. At first, Diluc thinks his eyes are playing tricks on him.
“I hope you like it,” you say sheepishly, “I ordered it a couple of months back, but it took a while to get finished. I picked it up just in time, but I was worried it wouldn’t be ready at all.”
He toys with one of the pawns, admiring the craftsmanship.
“The board is made from Yumemiro wood I had imported from Inazuma. All the pieces are made from Starsilver. I noticed a while ago that your own set wasn’t in the best shape anymore since you’ve had it for so long, and I was worried it might get too scruffed up if you didn’t get a new one. . . I know your father taught you how to play on it, so I thought you could put it up as decoration instead if I got you this.”
Softly, he places the Knight back down. There’s a mist over his eyes that you don’t recognize. You don’t have long to stare before he pulls you in, hugging you tightly. He stills, waiting to feel your chest rise and fall against him.
“Thank you,” he says, mumbling the words into your hair.
You fully relax, sinking into his hold, bringing your hands up to clutch at the fabric of his coat.
“I love you,” he adds.
It’s so genuine that it makes your heart ache as his chest rumbles against you.
“I love you too,” you answer softly, basking in his warm embrace.
“Happy birthday, Diluc,” you tack on gently.
He says nothing, but doesn’t let go, allowing your words to whisk themselves along on the breeze that drifts by, spinning the newly planted Windwheel Aster flowers just a few feet away.

Diluc’s birthday was a tricky thing.
He was the richest man in Mondstandt, so anything you bought for him would pale in comparison to what he already owned, and
His 18th birthday was when, well, you’d rather not talk about the subject.
So what was one like Diluc’s lover to do? You wanted this day to be perfect- to go without a hitch. You could ask your friends, but they would probably say that you knew him better than anyone else. You could try asking the maids what he would like, or-
You’ve got it!
You’ll make him something hand-made! Something he’ll never forget and always keep close to him, as days pass on and the both of you grow older, he’ll always have this one object.
But what to make?
You wanted to make something that he could get use out of, but it also had to be cute and suited to his style. What could he need? He had almost everything he could purchase within his reach, so it wasn’t like he needed a new pair of gloves or something.
However, you do notice how often his fluffy red hair gets in the way of his work. Always asking for a spare hair tie whenever he loses his current one. That’s it! You could make him a lovely bandana, with little flowers decorating it to remind him of the lovely and blossoming bond that you share.
Tumblr media
You started to work on the bandana all throughout the day before his birthday, wanting to get it done on time and ready for him to wear. This bandana was your priority, almost no breaks were taken to get it completed. (of course for food and water an necessities those are important.) Stitch after stitch, the headwear was slowly coming together.
“Is Y/n alright?” “Shh! They’re focused!”
While the maids were busy questioning your odd behavior, Diluc had just walked into the room.
“Y/n? I’ve barely seen you the entire day, is something wrong?” Diluc was quite concerned for his lover as he can usually never get Y/n off of him. (not that he minded, of course)
“Oh!” You quickly scrambled to put away your work so as to not show him your surprise before his big day. Unfortunately, Diluc took quick note of this. “What was that item you just hid behind your back?” “Um, it was, nothing really. You shouldn’t worry about it- haha- um-” You were struggling to get him off your back to continue your project. Your heart raced faster as he made his way to sit next to you on the couch you were sitting on. “Anyways… I was wondering if we could have dinner tomorrow, just the two of us. The valberries are in season and I would love to make a drink out of them for you.”
Diluc was always so kind, even for his own birthday he was doing his best to please you. “That sounds wonderful, ‘luc! I can’t wait!” “I’m glad. I have some work to do at the tavern, so take care of yourself while I’m gone.” He stood up and gave you a quick peck on the cheek. “I love you, Y/n.” “I love you too.”
And with that, you were free to work on your project once more.
Tumblr media
Today, April 30th. Diluc’s birthday. Adelinde was able to supply you with a lovely orange gift box for the bandana. Speaking of the bandana, it turned out beautiful. It was black with white daisies to compliment his bright hair, and the intricate stitching would leave him wondering if you were secretly some sort of master crafter just like he was the Darknight Hero. You were proud of your work, and you tied up the box with a red ribbon to finish it off.
“Good morning, Y/n.” Diluc came down the stairs still in his nightly attire, searching for you. You had awoken first to finish preparations. “Good morning, Diluc. Happy Birthday!” You beamed at him with so much excitement that he couldn't help but smile.
As the day went on, he spent most of it with you. You were still waiting for the perfect time to give him his gift, and when you two were about to head off on an afternoon stroll, you knew it was now or never.
“Diluc, you mean the world to me. I find so much comfort and never-ending joy when I’m around you, that I wanted to give you something meaningful for your birthday. Something that could hopefully show just how much I love you every time you use it. I don’t know where I would be without you, Diluc. I love you so much.”
You handed him the orange box. He gave you a look of surprise. He slowly undid the ribbon and opened the box, to reveal a black bandana with intricate white daisies.
“Y/n- I-” Tears welled up in Diluc’s eyes. He couldn’t take it. Years ago on this day, his father and everything he had ever loved was ripped from his blood-stained hands. But now, it was filled with you. You who brightened up his days, who showed him that he was worthy of love. He wrapped the black bandana around his head and pulled out strands of his hair to frame his face.
You wrapped him in a massive hug. “Diluc-” He returned the hug and held you as tight as he possibly could. He never wanted to let you go- never. He wanted to stay like this forever, with your arms wrapped around him, welcoming his embrace.
Diluc used to see his birthday as one filled with regret. But now, he had a moment of peace.

“Say it again.”
“Y/N.” Diluc huffed but stopped dead in his tracks only to feel you run into his back. He wasn’t surprised since you were practically running after him, and why was that ...
“You said you liked me.”
Oh yeah.
“That’s not what I said.”
“It’s 100% what you said.” You reiterated as you fixed your clothes and smoothed your hair. “Of course I would think that way. I don’t care for them the way I do you.” You repeated in a deeper voice, one to emphasize you were mimicking him. When you finished, he didn’t look impressed.
“’Care’ and ‘like’ are different things.”
“I disagree.” He sighed before turning to continue toward the Dawn Winery. It was going to be a very, very long walk back.
“Either way, you’re missing the context of that conversation.”
“I don’t think so ...” You tapped your chin as you matched his pace and he shook his head.
“Did I not also say, ‘their compensation has already been provided,’ meaning my care was primarily one of financial support and not admiration?” He watched the pieces fall into place in your mind. The bits of understanding connecting to each other until the energetic smile you wore flipped into a pout.
“Oh ...”
He felt bad for your misunderstanding but it really wasn’t necessary for you to get so choked up about it. It shouldn’t surprise him that you’d get over-excited about something that he did; it was a common occurrence.
“It’s been an exhausting day. Once we return to the winery perhaps you should take a rest.”
“I guess, yeah.” The energy you had earlier deflated, even your pace was starting to slow. Really, there was no need for this but, by the archons, did he had an soft spot for you.
Diluc put his hand out in front of your body, a behavior he did when something unsettled him. You stuttered to a stop, hand finding his arm as you searched for the threat. “Wait here.” Diluc commanded and you slipped off to the side of the road while he disappeared through the thicket of trees.
There wasn’t anything amiss, no threats or worries to be had here. Especially since he had cleared this path the day before in preparation for your return. Instead, he was using this time for something else, something unexpected.
“Is everything okay?” You asked when he made his way to the dirt road. You had your weapon ready but there was no need to use it.
“Yes, nothing but a pack of boars.” He watched you ease into a relaxed stance before sending your weapon away. Even though he taught you ways to use it he was always reassured when you didn’t need to.
“Are you ready to go?” Curiously, you looked to his hand which he kept behind his back but he didn’t play his cards until he was close enough to touch you. With ease, he ran his fingers over your ear and watched your smile return.
“y/n,” He began as he carefully placed a trimmed flower in your hair, “I adore you.” With that your face lit up just as the sun does during the dawn, and the sight of it made his heart flutter.
Returning to the road, he heard your footsteps follow after him; a sound he found unbelievably comforting.
“You flat out admitted you have feelings for me.” You beamed, fingers touching the lamp grass. Sunlight flittered through the treetops like rippling water as you walked next to him. It was only because of you that Diluc looked away from the path; how easy it was when you laughed the way you did.
With a accepting huff, Diluc grabbed your fingers and brought them to his lips. A teasing tone spreading across your skin as he looked at you. “As husbands usually do.”
