Things Elliot Morrison Loves Dearly, In No Particular Order

Pressing flowers into the pages of his journal

Any book will do in a pinch but Elliot’s journal is his most favorite. It’s well beyond tattering by now, one of his only possessions left from before the outbreak, but he can’t help but smile as he runs a finger down the crumbling spine. The keeper of his thoughts and, Elliot thinks, his oldest confidant. He’s sitting in a field of flowers and weeds now, in the open but safe within the confines of the walls. Recently there’s been talk of possible endeavors to turn their little compound into an actual town, hurried whispers turned to excited scribbles in Elliot’s journal. He wrote for the earlier part of the afternoon and now the sun is baking down on him, no doubt darkening the freckles dusting the bridge of his nose. He’s feeling a bit lazy now, not unlike a cat spread out under a window with warmth seeping through the thin cotton of his shirt and hanging around his shoulders. Elliot’s given up on writing for the day, has dotted his last, content to languidly doodle a cat near the binding of his journal’s yellowing pages. Most are already stained with grass and the petals of whatever flowers Elliot can get his hands on but usually wildflowers, which are tenacious in nature and hardly mind being picked. As it is, the world has become majorly overgrown so he doesn’t feel very bad about using the flowers for his own gain. His clever fingers, gentle out of habit, pluck a nearby Oxeye Daisy from the ground. Elliot brings the flower to pass under his nose and inhales deeply; so far away from the mess of the end of the world but connected to the earth in a way he can’t explain — even in the pages of his beloved journal that he sets aside carefully. Elliot moves to his back, lying in the field, letting the long grass tickle his cheeks. He tells himself it’s only for a moment, that he’ll just spend a few minutes watching the clouds pass him by, but Elliot’s eyelids turn heavy before he can help it.

Fruitful supply runs

“Oh, thank goodness.” Elliot breathes out with an exhale he hadn’t realized he was keeping bated. His cheeks are tinted pink with relief, wide eyed as he watches the small team drive up to the gates with smiles spread across their faces. He tries his best not to hover as Weston and Charles give their compound’s leader a quick briefing on the state of things beyond the walls but that’s proving to be increasingly difficult. Thankfully, oh finally he thinks, Weston is as merciful as he is good at reading Elliot’s fretting and excuses himself to walk over in Elliot's direction. He can’t as much as open his mouth to ask if Weston had found anything on the list he’d given him before he’s thrusting a paper sack towards Elliot with a goofy grin. Elliot’s face flushes a deeper shade of red as he excitedly takes the bag and opens it, looking inside. Instantly, he thinks he could cry. “Oh my, oh Weston, this is wonderful.” Inside the bag are various items that will make the next few days around the compound considerably easier. A clean oral syringe and unopened bottle of children’s aspirin that will ease the discomfort of little Tommy Belson’s fever. There’s a roll of bandage, as well as a rusted pair of scissors that had once been meant for counting hair but could be sterilized and put to good work almost immediately. The final item does, in fact, bring a prickling sensation to the tip of Elliot’s nose. He clutches the bag closer to his chest instinctively and when he looks at Weston again his eyes are sentimental and watery. “Thank you. Thank you, so much. You don’t understand how much this helps.” He has to bite the inside of his cheek to keep himself from crying but Weston simply smiles and gives him a pat on the shoulder before returning to Charles and their leader. Elliot takes another peak in the bag, sniffling. At the bottom of the sack was a vial of Penicillin, something the compound’s infirmary had been sorely lacking. It had been common before the outbreak but might as well be liquid gold now and, Elliot thought with a shaky breath, would stop one more senseless death from happening.

Sunday mornings

They try to make an attempt to create something of a semblance of normality at the compound. There are those that think everything must be life and death but Elliot isn’t sure he can live like that, he stands by how desperately important it is to make sure these people feel safe and happy. That, he has passionately told their leader before, is one of the biggest ways a town differs from a compound. Because of this, Elliot and the other’s develop something of a routine in a world where time should mean nothing at all — Sunday mornings are his absolute favorite. A small congregation begins to gather early on Sunday to share their faiths but Elliot always declines his invitation with a kind smile and shake of the head. He can see where people might think he’s a man of God but religion has always hung too loose or too tight around his shoulders, never quite fitting the way it should. They share their baked bread with him anyway. Elliot warms at the thought of Marie’s baking from his spot under the Sycamore tree that had been there before the world ended and would be there long after. He has a hand splayed across his face, covering his eyes, and is counting to fifty diligently while the children hide. Well, almost all of the children. When Elliot hits fifty he feels a tug on his hand and opens his eyes to look down at Esther Adams who had deigned not to hide at all. “Oh dear,” he starts. “Have all the good spots been taken?” She shakes her head and tugs at Elliot’s hand again. He nods and leans down closer to her height, voice taking on a conspiratorial tone. “Do you want to help me find the others?” Esther blushes at that and looks down at the soil beneath them but nods earnestly. Elliot melts a little at that, like butter left out on a picnic table, going soft on the inside as he nods as well. “Okay, good, Tommy’s gotten so good at hiding. Don’t you think? I’m not so sure I’d be able to find him myself.”

And for prosperity sake

Elliot loves easily, he always has, but with life more precious than it’s ever been before he doesn’t know how he couldn’t keep his heart open. He supposes that the alternative does make sense. He isn’t completely naive to how badly it will hurt if the world takes away anything he cares deeply for. He chooses to love regardless, in spite of. The sycamore tree that he has taken naps under. Puzzles with Weston and Charlie that will never be completed, a handful of pieces missing, taking turns making up ridiculous things the picture could be. Elliot thinks of the compound’s leader and the things they carry with them. He goes rosy at the cheeks. It’s a dangerous thing to idealize people, Elliot knows, he goes starry eyed at the thought of their leader anyway. Marie’s baked bread. The way it falls apart in his hands, warm and grainy and wonderful. Sun dried laundry. The infirmary. Esther Adams and Tommy Belson. Elliot sings to his plants, waters them, they get a piece of his heart as well. This gets a piece of his heart, that gets a piece of his heart. He pours himself into the cracks the world has left behind and smiles as he fills them.
