Happy yearly "I pull out a Homestuck cosplay photo from the vault" day! This year's cosplay is my first HS cosplay and 3rd overall costume, Karkat.

Homestuck was a HUGE part of my con-going experience when I was starting out in the early 2010s. Tumblr was a big fandom hub at the time and you couldn't go a day without finding a good ol' horn or armsock tutorial on a cosplay ressource blog, so it really kickstarted my love for the hobby proper.

It made cosplay accessible, imo. There were so many goddamn characters to pick from and the base outfits were so simple that assembling a HS costume made for a friendly introduction to the hobby! I remember picking Karkat partially because out of my favorite trolls he had long sleeves and making armsocks was scary at the time lol

And the fandom! Homestuck cosplayers were basically everywhere and you couldn't take a few steps without encountering another fan to nerd out with. It had a big community feel that I haven't seen occur since in conventions, at least not to that scale.

I'm getting nostalgic here so I'll cut it short, but I have fond memories of the fandom at the time and Homestuck has been a really important step in my cosplay journey.

First of all underrated as hell ship... haley x sebastian.... god the ineffable drip of the goth boy x bimbo ship... they would have the enemies to lovers fuel!! They would hate eachother bc stereotypes but also kind of be into eachother and if you get my gist...they would be ♤ in homestuck lingo... but there's also potential to them discovering a hidden depth in the other ☝🏻 we know haley is very open to trying out new stuff after her character development so she would very much love seb showing her a new side of life she hadn't considered before :)

No brainer but maru x penny feels so right, they're best friends and maru is like, the healthiest most sane person in the valley so penny would feel very safe in that relationship lol

Out of all the 'canon' het ships i think the one i like the most is shane and emily?? I dont like em romantically bc it feels very manic pixie dream girl fixes broken man's life type but it is an interesting dynamic that should be explored more in fics. Em in general is soo underrated i wish more ppl liked her bc she's my favorite bachelorette :(

The 'would-be-canon' ships just feel weird as hell all around bc at least half of them feel like friendships which is cool but the other half feel so forced 🤨 why would the LI have other love interests if at the end of the day nothing happens w em?? Its not like im actively competing with penny to get with sam the girl can barely stand up for herself. And its also not like they will ever get together either!!! Time does not develop for them unless I am there to control it.

I mean, I'm kind of a weirdo. But I'm aware that I am, so when I'm asked in the office what kind of stuff I like I leave out anything I can say about RE. Because I can talk about the characters in a similar way that an otaku talks about their waifu of choice.

But in your case, have you ever talked about it with your coworkers during a casual conversation?

Yes! Some of them even know about you guys. About four of my coworkers were deeply invested in getting daily updates when I was shadowbanned.

But I don't work in an office. I work in entertainment. And you know who the types of people are that usually work in entertainment? Nerds and theater kids. One of my coworkers is a professional LARPer who used to cosplay Homestuck, for example lmao

When I worked at the cemetery, that was different. People knew I played vidya, but that's all they knew. They didn't even bother to ask what my favorite game was because they were so far removed from that world.

But those are the extremes on a spectrum.

For most of my adult life, I've been able to find the nerds at whatever job I'm at. This is the first place I've ever been able to talk about fandom, but you can generally find someone that you work with who plays games and will be able and happy to hold a conversation about it. I was able to convince a group of coworkers to play Yakuza, back in the day.

1. My romantic partners. We're in a closed poly relationship. We color-coded each other (orange, purple, green). We nerd out about cool shit. One writes poetry and amazing stories with intricate characters and obsesses over the Sims. The other has read through the entirety of Homestuck TWICE and is working on a third time (they scare me /aff) and is an AMAZING baker who made me a killer pie for my birthday. We call ourselves the Unholy Trinity. We went to see the Barbie movie together. We've been in trinity for a year and a half, but I've known them both for way longer. It's great. I love them so much. They mean the world to me.

2. My family, especially my grandpa and cousins. My Papa takes me fishing and he's always making jokes n shit. He's a goofy fella /pos. And my cousins live out of state, but whenever they visit we have this ongoing, years-long LARP epic that we've been doing since before their younger siblings were even BORN. We are DEDICATED.

3. My cat! Her name is Beans and I want to give her all of my worldly possessions and pick her up and squeeze her because she is so tiny...

4. Undertale. Like I KNOW that doesn't come up on this blog or even very often on my main, but I've been in love with the game ever since December 2015 (and I was, I shit you not, in elementary school). Because I was too young to have social media, I didn't get into the fandom until kinda recently and according to the horror stories I am grateful for that. I also got the collector's edition this year from one of my partners as a birthday present, and I've been playing the soundtrack on CD when I drive places. Makes things way more chill.

5. Team StarKid. It's my dream to act with them one day. I KNOW it's fucking insane and I'd have no clue where to start and I KNOW they don't do open auditions. But my evil plan is to apply as a fucking janitor all incognito-like, and then I'd audition at other places nearby, and then word would get around, and then they'll be like "ayo he's pretty good" and they'll approach me and they will NOT be able to resist my memorable personality and charm. MCR tragic backstory? why not. might as well

imagine if you will a gay little egg who was edgy and hated being mainstream. grew up in a sheltered home and spent way too much time roleplaying with weirdos online, trying to find and express their identity for the first time. i realized i was bi as hell and was forced out of the closet about it (a story for another time). i finally work up to getting ~1 irl friend (my since-highschool bestie) who introduces me to a few songs (wttbp, na na na, teenagers, i don't love you, all the basics). happen to get into homestuck and happen to meet a bunch of nerds who actually know what my cosplay is (karkat. of course) start talking to one of them about music, first thing he says is "i like MCR", and at this time i ONLY understand them from this point of view: i know people look down on emo music and think its cringe. BUT. i like all kinds of music, like, my taste is just a hodge podge of everything. any music can be beautiful, i really believe that. so i told him i'd maybe check them out one day! 1 adhd diagnosis later and i'm rebuilding my life after a pretty traumatic situation and a breakup, and i start hyperfixating on strange aeons' MCR 2022 tour video. seeing this enby dressing alternatively on stage really intrigued me. i've been invited to stuff like drag shows before, but never really understood the appeal. its great, but not for me. but this was waayyy more up my alley and the little speeches they gave on stage and how silly they were, but how deeply they thought and how seriously they took issues started drawing me in more. around november i listened to bullets and revenge and revenge still has a giant chokehold on me. its my favorite album hands down.

after this, i took a long break and obsessed over other things for a while, but i came back to that video with a powerful desire to learn more and more about the band. i listened to tbp even though i was really scared it would trigger me (cancer sucks) and came out okay. i've memorized the entirety of dr. death defying's speech and it lives rent free in my head when i wake up. and now i'm making my way through CW. i've had tons of people try to convert me and it gone nowhere but this MCR video really was an easy digestible way to do it, and i think its amazing that she got to share this with the world. thanks father strange, you are so so epic. i just came out to my family as trans last year, and this band has not only helped with that immensely, but also that video. seeing someone not be afraid to be themselves, be unapologetically queer and gnc, its really inspired me to be my best self, no matter what. it taught me you're not really living life if you're living it for others, unable to be yourself and be happy.

You are neither of these things.

Among the ARTIFACTS are: TWO (2) FAKE ARMS [CURRENTLY CAPTCHALOGUED IN YOUR SYLLADEX], ONE (1) PAIR OF TRICK HANDCUFFS, ONE (1) STUNT BLASTER, ONE (1) PILOT’S HELMET, ONE (1) PAIR OF BEAGLE PUSS GLASSES, SEVERAL (~) SMOKE PELLETS, SEVERAL (~) BLOOD CAPSULES, and ONE (1) COPY OF COLONEL SASSACRE'S DAUNTING TEXT OF SPACE FRIVOLITY AND PRACTICAL JAPERY, and ONE (1) COPY OF HARRY ANDERSON'S "WISE GUY", BY MIKE CAVENEY.

Some of this stuff may come in handy at some point. For now, you decide to just take the SMOKE PELLETS.

Mark: Captchalogue the smoke pellets.

You stow the SMOKE PELLETS on one of your CAPTCHALOGUE CARDS in your SYLLADEX.

You still aren't totally sure what that means, but you are starting to get the hang of the vernacular at least.

You aren't totally sure if "EQUIP" is a verb copasetic with the abstract behavioral medium in which you dwell, but you give it a try anyway.

Unfortunately, you cannot access the FAKE ARMS! Their card is underneath the one you just used to captchalogue the SMOKE PELLETS. You will have to use the pellets first in order to access the arms. But this is probably unadvisable, since you'd just make your room lousy with smoke!

Your SYLLADEX'S FETCH MODUS is currently dictated by the logic of a STACK DATA STRUCTURE. You were never all that great with data structures and you find the concept puzzling and mildly irritating.

But with any hope, perhaps you will advance new, more practical FETCH MODI for your SYLLADEX with a little more experience.

Mark: Examine Space Sleuth Poster.

Is it even possible to get any more hard boiled than that? You really doubt it. This poster was one of your wisest purchases.

You first place the HAMMER into your SYLLADEX.

But now all of your CAPTCHALOGUE CARDS are full. You wonder what will happen if you try to take the NAILS

You guess it doesn't hurt to try.

Mark: Take nails.

You captchalogue FOUR (4) NAILS into the top card, and push all the ARTIFACTS down a card.

The FAKE ARMS are pushed entirely out of the deck!!!

Oh well. They're probably completely useless anyway. But you probably don't want to do that again, unless you want to drop the SMOKE PELLETS and suffer the consequences.

In any case, you now feel like you have gathered enough things to get down to business and do some really important stuff. The next thing you do will probably be exceptionally meaningful.

Mark: Squawk like an imbecile and shit on your desk.

Your COMMUNICATOR is also littered with various PROGRAMMING PROJECT FILES. You are so bad at programming sometimes you wonder why you even bother with it.

Your PESTERCHUM application is flashing. Someone is trying to get in touch with you.

Mark: Open Pesterchum.

All I can imagine is them being surprised, but eventually leads to Joey punching Jake in the stomach and Jude is sorta like crying or panicking while trying to hold Joey back from attacking Jake

Then Jake is just holding his stomach, lying on the ground very confused of why he just got punched by a child who keeps calling him Pa.

Sorta feel like it would go down that way, but it would definitely end happy, for sure!
