WHATS THE SCOOP ON COFFEE?

Millions of people across the world start their day with a piping hot cup of coffee. This magical bean juice has been around for centuries, but the effects coffee has on your body long-term have always been a little bit of a mystery. For years I remember hearing that coffee was bad for you- that it would stunt your growth, raise your blood pressure, and even cause cancer. But as of recent, the new scoop is that having a cup of joe in the morning might actually be beneficial for your health.
So, what’s changed? It’s all about the evidence.
Over the past few decades, coffee has been one of the most studied dietary supplements. Lucky for us coffee drinkers, the news is predominantly positive.
According to this study found in Circulation, higher coffee consumption was associated with a lower risk of mortality. To simplify, this study found that if you drink anywhere between 3-4 cups of coffee per day, you will potentially live longer.
This information sounds awesome, but its only one study, so I don’t want to get ahead of myself here. Eager to find the truth, I continued my coffee study online.
According to WebMD, having a cup or two of java in the morning has a number of health benefits.
A growing body of research shows that coffee drinkers compared to nondrinkers are:
1.Less likely to have type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia.
2. Likely to have fewer cases of certain cancers
3. Likely to have fewer heart rhythm problems, and strokes
While this seems like great news for the coffee community, WebMD stressed that in these studies conducted, people were not asked to start drinking coffee, or to stop drinking coffee. Instead, they were asked IF they drink coffee, and then they were tested for the diseases listed above. This means that correlation does not necessarily mean causation, and that other lifestyle factors could have contributed to disease prevention in the patients tested.
And for the final icing on my coffee cake, I found that coffee has been removed from the World Health Organizations list of possible carcinogens.
According to this article posted by the NY Times in 2016:
“Last year, a panel of scientists that shaped the federal government’s 2015 dietary guidelines said there was “strong evidence” that three to five cups of coffee daily was not harmful, and that “moderate” consumption might reduce chronic disease. Another group, the World Cancer Research Fund International, reported that coffee protects against multiple types of cancer.”

Basically, It has been found that coffee isn’t bad for you, its most likely really good for you. This information is music to my ears since I’ve been downing three cups of coffee daily for the entirety of my college existence.
Something worth noting about these conclusions is that all of these studies are strictly about black coffee (possibly with a touch of cream). As delicious as a venti white mocha from Starbucks can be, that type of foofoo coffee drink does not have the same health benefits as black coffee.
With health recommendations continuing to change in our society, I would encourage you to try to stay educated on recommendations and regulations in the food/supplement industry. What is “bad” for you one day, may end up being fine the next. And what is “healthy” at one point in time may end up being really bad for you. Ultimately, I would urge each one of us to listen to our bodies, and consume what makes us feel happy and healthy.
