war movies released very close together, one from America and one from Russia, both telling or re-telling stories based upon true events. The film from Russia is T-34 which tells the story of the Russian built tank that was produced in their hundreds during WWll, it also focuses upon the German invasion of Russia and the vital role that this tank in-particular played in fighting the Nazi war machine. It also has an interesting storyline which is the central thread of the movie, with the Nazi’s realising that Russian tank crews are better than their own, so they recruit POW’s who are tank crew members to train their own tank crews. Things however do not go as planned, the Nazi’s think that the Russian tank is unarmed as the training begins, but this is not so and the T-34 blasts its way out of the POW camp, the film then tells the story of the Russian crews attempt to return to the Red Army and of how they are pursued by German Panther tanks. It’s an exciting and quite graphic movie, with realistic looking battles and a strong cast and script. The second war film to be released is MIDWAY and yes it tells the story of the battle of Midway again in the second world war, but this time involving American and Japanese forces, sadly it’s a repeat of the debacle that was PEARL HARBOUR a few years ago, and yes there are factual events portrayed but why do Hollywood movies add bits and pieces, well I suppose its for dramatic effect, oh and yes to make money too, there are spectacular effects in the movie but I think they spent a lot more on these than they did the story, so it’s a no from me for this slice of Hollywood tat. The Russian movie is in my opinion far superior its gritty and realistic rather than glitzy and well boring. But it’s the music that I am really concerned about, so MIDWAY, yes where do we start? The score is by Thomas Wander and Harald Kloser, and is a work that sadly is rather heavy on grating synthetic cues, which outnumber the symphonic elements by the sound of things, I listened through three times and could only really find one cue that I thought might be of any interest which is track number seven THIS IS IT, its dramatic and forthright in its overall sound, but short lived and does not really develop into anything that one can latch onto to call memorable, I am not going to talk anymore about this film or its score, as it is another wasted opportunity in the case of the music to create something that at least has hints of themes, I think the composers must have listened to DUNKIRK and thought, oh yes “THE DRONE THE JARRING AND REPETATIVE SYNTHETIC SOUNDS, WE WILL GO FOR THAT”.

Moonfall stars Halle Berry, Brian Harper, John Bradley, Michael Peña, Charlie Plummer, Kelly Yu, Eme Ikwuakor, Carolina Bartczak, and Donald Sutherland. The film is directed by Roland Emmerich from a script by Emmerich, Harald Kloser, and Spencer Cohen.

Moonfall hits theaters on February 4, 2022.

I have a soft spot for director Roland Emmerich. Maybe it’s the memory of seeing his Godzilla in the drive-in theater in 1998, or the many many times I saw Independence Day on VHS but I’m always rooting for the guy even though I only like a handful of his works. I thought Midway was quite good and when I heard whispers of Moonfall, I thought “if there’s anyone that can make it work against all odds, it’s Emmerich”. I sort of like this movie because of its bonkers premise though deep down, I know it isn’t good.

In 2011, a mission to satellite repair mission goes disastrously wrong. Astronaut Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson) swears a space anomaly was responsible. Jocinda Fowler (Halle Berry) didn’t see anything. Ten years later, the Moon’s orbit begins deteriorating. It’s only a matter of time before it annihilates us all but conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman (John Bradley) believes he knows what to do.

If the big piece of cheese in the sky did begin falling towards us, there’s nothing we - or the crew from Michael Bay’s Armageddon - could do about it. Writers Roland Emmerich, Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen know this. Moonfall does not attempt to be plausible. Did you come for some trademark Emmerich disaster sequences? You got it. The destruction is so intense the world might’ve been better off in 2012 At least there, governments had set up arks with resources and stuff inside. In this story, oceans are sucked into the air by the mother of all tides, and then fall onto people in a storm of shattered skyscrapers and rainfall. The world is torn asunder by gravity. People are dying from atmospheric dissipation. If that wasn’t enough, the U.S. government is preparing to shoot nuclear missiles at the Moon to blow it up - which means a shower of radioactive space rocks for all. I wish I could say these visuals were enough… but it isn’t 1996 anymore. What movies like this need more than ever are characters we fall in love with. Unfortunately, this is where Moonfall put the least amount of effort.

If this were a good movie, we’d spend with Houseman, Harper, and Fowler. We'd see them progress as people and discover something about them that would transform them into a unit. Instead, we get forced conflicts. Even after everyone has marked the apocalypse on their calendar, Brian is biting off everyone's heads rather than agreeing to help the mission. Then, believing we need faces to represent the destruction on the ground, we get chases and sub plot centered on Brian’s son, Sonny (Charlie Plummer), his ex-wife, Brenda (Carolina Bartczak), her husband whom Sonny doesn’t approve of (Tom Lopez, played by Michael Peña), his two daughters, Fowler’s ex-husband (Eme Ikwuakor), their son Jimmy (Zayn Maloney) AND Fowler’s nanny Michelle (Kelly Yu). It’s too much, and the characters aren't well-written enough for you to see them as anything but props.

I will give the film’s Moon mystery points. You want to see what’s going on, you buy the nutty premise because the film is tonally consistent, and it’s something we haven’t seen before. In fact, I don’t think the movie needed the destruction. The whole thing could’ve been about the astronauts investigating the celestial body. For this reason, I would be interested in seeing a sequel if it ever did happen.

I don’t think Moonfall has a destiny as a film “so bad it’s good”. Too many scenes show you what this could’ve been had it lived up to its potential. None of them are on Earth, which is why the movie gets sorta better as it goes along. Or maybe going in thinking it’ll be kinda dopey and being pleasantly surprised is the key to having fun. Either way, I’m cheering for you, Roland. This one might not have been what I was hoping for, but I’ll see your next movie for sure. (April 23, 2022)

I may be in the minority here, but I liked this one. Of course, I have a soft spot for Roland Emmerich movies.

The spilling of conspiracies (here about the moon) are almost reminiscent of the “X” character.
