That following week, I visited my lovely sales associate (shortened to “SA”) for some pickups and inquired about a special order. Obviously, I did not read enough articles because all of the ones I later found relayed the same message: you cannot simply ask for a special order, you must be offered one. 

Oops. 

In my defense, I wanted to learn more about the process from an Hermes expert instead of scouring through pages of threads online. 

My SA informed me that the right to place a special order (shortened to “SO”) is only granted to certain individuals, presumably VIP. She also said that each SA is allowed to place a few SO per half-year. Not only does your SA have to offer you this opportunity, the store manager also needs to approve your order. Once the order is sent to overseas, Paris can choose to accept or reject your preferences. Even then, it is not guaranteed that your bag will be made. So many obstacles to conquer before buying a bag that costs over $10,000. Who knew spending money could be so hard? (Joke) 

I left the store feeling slightly disheartened about the information I learned. There was no way I was even close to being considered a devoted H customer when it was only the fourth month into my journey. I pretty much gave up on the idea of my own personalized bag, opting to live vicariously through other people’s photos. My life continued as usual- studying for final exams, attending a friend’s graduation, and traveling. A month later, I received a fateful email from my SA offering the opportunity to customize my very own B/K! 

**For those of you who are H aficionados, you may be surprised that I was offered via email. From reading other people’s testimonials, the individual is usually asked in person or via phone call. I am always traveling, so all of my correspondences with my SA outside of in-person are through email.

Although I was brimming with excitement, I had limited access to wifi to research specifications, options, and colors. I thought, “how hard could it possibly be?” My heart was set on pink, so I expected to make my decision very quickly. After returning home, I scheduled an appointment with my SA for the next day. It was a bright and sunny summer day. I felt a skip in my step as I entered the store. I met her on the second floor and we situated ourselves by the jewelry. Adjacent to our table was a large window, bringing in warm rays of sunshine. We chatted and caught up a bit.

Then, she brought out the huge binder. The pages of the book were reminiscent of the study manuals for my exams. I could tell that the selection process would not be as easy as I imagined. Had I done ample research, I would have known that colors vary per season and would have chosen a backup color. Only two pinks were offered (rose indien and rose jaipur), neither of which are the pinks that I wanted (rose confetti or rose sakura). Additionally, I recalled that the most-selected leather for an SO is chevre mysore. Knowing that I wanted this specific leather further limited my color options. My mind was firm on a bi-color B30, so now I faced the challenge of choosing TWO colors. 

Not only did I struggle with choosing colors, but I also had a difficult time deciding where I wanted the colors. So many options, so little time. My appointment was a total of 30 minutes because my darling SA had her lunch break. 30 minutes is not enough time for a girl like me to make up her mind. 30 minutes is especially not enough time to learn of all the options AND choose. That day, I brought my gorgeous B35 orange poppy with the first twilly I ever purchased from my SA. 

I ended up prioritizing colors over color placement. The leather rainbow was quite intimidating. Do I want a bag with a solid outside with contrast piping and handles? Do I want a bag with a solid outside and contrast interior? What kind of hardware do I want? What will these colors look like on chevre leather? And which two colors will look good together? I was extremely unprepared in making this many decisions. 

In and out, 30 minutes. I breathed a sigh of relief and thanked my SA for the opportunity. My boyfriend and I made our way downstairs where I captured this photo for a memento: May 20, 2016 at 1:20pm. May 20, also known as Chinese Valentine’s Day because the pronunciation of five-two-zero is similar to “I love you” in Mandarin. Our first 5/20 together and my first special order to mark to occasion. 

Honestly, I was so overwhelmed by the entire experience- my fingers tingling, my mind racing, my heart palpitating. Adrenaline pumped so furiously through my veins that my time in the store was a total blur. Admittedly, I actually forgot what size and colors I have chosen for my bag! I had to ask my SA again a few weeks later and even then I did not really remember. I am heading to the store the pickup my special order tomorrow.
