Angered that Obatala created the lands without her consent, Olokun sought to reclaim her dominion with a great flood. To stop the floods Obatala chains her to the bottom of the ocean…this is the very moment before she is imprisoned within her own kingdom. She stands as a symbol of the chaos that bubbles beneath our calm surface, a profound reminder of the lesser-known parts of ourselves we often retreat from."

Eve and Lilith, we are one and the same (2020) by Afro-Cuban American artist, Harmonia Rosales (born in 1984). Harmonia Rosales' mission is to counter Eurocentric views of beauty and representation in art, and to portray people of colour in all their multiplicity as protagonists - to acknowledge and empower them with “artworks that reflect their beauty that has been ignored for so long.” While Lilith has been negatively portrayed in art as malign, the serpent woman, and "temptress" of the Garden of Eden, and Eve as the naïve and helpless tempted, artist Harmonia Rosales has reimagined the myth, depicting Lilith as supporting Eve's willing awakening into knowledge, self determination, and personhood, and the two women as collaborators, or even different sides of the same coin. May we all be as Lilith and Eve!
