Curious squad announcements
England squad for ODI series against New Zealand: Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes.
I mean, it’s incredibly similar to the squad of four years ago that won and won dramatically, which is mainly good. I mean, they absolutely won on a wing and a prayer, but the same team will have the same wings and prayers, so. I’m curious if S Curran will be in the starting XI. Probably - hopefully - and it seems to me that he’s the one projected to take on the Ben Stokes, batting-six-and-there-at-the-end role, and he doesn’t seem ready for that now so I guess the inclusion of Stokes is good. Just, you know, it’s better if everyone arrives in India with the Captain able to move.
I’m a bit surprised by the inclusion of Jason Roy. He hasn’t done much for a while. I guess I’m pleased in the sense that I like loyalty to players, but I was expecting Jacks, Crawley and Foakes and they have all contributed more to recent matches (although admittedly in different formats). But I’m also pleased because I have loyalty to players and if J-Roy can find some form with Jonny, England will stand in incredible stead.
Leaving out Harry Brook though.
Chuffed for David Willey.
England squad for T20 series against New Zealand: Jos Buttler (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Josh Tongue, John Turner, Luke Wood.
Yay, Will Jacks! I think he might be the crucial test player of the future so it’s nice to see him beginning to be included. Also great to see more Rehan Ahmed.
I wondered about Crawley, but the red ball and white ball teams seem to be pulling away from each other to some degree, so I’m not that surprised.
No Dan Lawrence in either format, which is a shame.
I don’t recall Gus Atkinson when Surrey have played Middlesex but I guess he must be something. Surrey are certainly an extremely strong side - the white ball team isn’t a million miles from a Surrey 1st XI. Which brings me to…
Seriously. Has Foakes set fire to a pavilion? Murdered a groundskeeper? Chained himself to The Oval and refused to leave?

[ad_1] Former England Test skipper Joe Root has been added to England's first ODI squad against Ireland at Headingley at his own request. England's initial squad didn't include a single player from their provisional ODI World Cup squad for the three-match ODI series. Harry Brook was the only exception, he was a part of the ODI series but after being included in the squad in place of Jason Roy, he will rest for the entire series. Root will be looking to gain some momentum before the ODI World Cup commences on October 5. He has struggled for form during England's recently concluded 3-1 series win over New Zealand, making 6, 0 and 4 in the first three games before a rusty knock of 29(40) in the fourth ODI at Lord's. His knock further exposed his lack of rhythm and consistency in the 50-over format.Overall since England's triumph in the 2019 World Cup, he has only batted 16 times in ODI format.England's national selector Luke Wright, revealed Root's "asked to be involved" in Wednesday's first ODI."Like for a lot of people, he is getting that rhythm of 50-over cricket. Obviously, we don't play [much of] it in this country, but a lot of those lads haven't played a lot of 50-over cricket, especially someone like Joe," Wright said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo."He just wanted a bit more time. It's a great thing for someone to still have that desire to keep wanting to do more and more. It shows where he's at with his game and what makes him such a world-class player that, when he doesn't feel quite right, he still wants to tinker and do more. As much as we probably thought he needed a break as well, he just wanted another go," Wright added.Wright went on to indicate that Roy who is suffering from back spasms could feature in the second as well as the third ODI against Ireland."We've given Jason the option of being involved and he still has the option," Wright said. "He wasn't expected to be in that Ireland squad and then to get the news that he was missing out on the World Cup came as a bit of a hammer blow, so we've left that with Jason…. We'll work on that one over the next few days."England will play the first ODI against Ireland on Wednesday at Headingley.England squad vs Ireland: Zak Crawley (c), Ben Duckett (vc), Rehan Ahmed, Joe Root (first ODI only), Brydon Carse, Sam Hain, Will Jacks, Craig Overton, Matthew Potts, Phil Salt, George Scrimshaw, Jamie Smith, Luke Wood.(Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)Topics mentioned in this article [ad_2]

[ad_1] England named batter Harry Brook at the expense of Jason Roy on Sunday in the squad for its 50-over World Cup title defence.Brook, who was left out of England’s provisional World Cup squad, made the cut despite a string of failures in the recent series against New Zealand. But he was impressive in the Indian Premier League and the Hundred so skipper Jos Buttler has kept faith with the 24-year-old, saying last month the door was not closed for Brook.Dawid Malan, who plundered 277 runs in three ODIs against New Zealand to be named player of the series, also made the squad and is a firm favourite to open the batting for England. With Roy sidelined due to a back injury, Malan opened the batting against New Zealand and the 36-year-old became the joint-fastest Englishman to get to 1,000 ODI runs, reaching the mark in 21 innings to match Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott.“We have selected a squad we are confident can go to India and win the World Cup,” England men’s national selector Luke Wright said in a statement.“We are blessed with an incredibly strong group of white-ball players which was underlined by the performances in the series win against a very good New Zealand team.“The strength of the group has meant that we have had to make some tough decisions on world-class players, with Jason Roy missing out and Harry Brook coming into the squad.”Roy, who was an integral part of the England side which won the 2019 World Cup, gave up his incremental contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in May to play more franchise cricket.England all-rounder and test captain Ben Stokes also returns having reversed his decision to retire from ODIs.Stokes, who starred in England’s victorious 2019 campaign on home soil, warmed up for the World Cup by smashing 235 runs in three innings against New Zealand. It included a knock of 182 off 124 deliveries -- England’s highest individual ODI score ever -- in the third match earlier this week.Bowlers Adil Rashid and Mark Wood were injury doubts but both were named in the squad.England begin its World Cup defence with the first match of the tournament when they take on New Zealand in Ahmedabad on Oct. 5 in a rematch of the 2019 final.England squad: England Squad for ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes [ad_2] Source link

Ben Stokes returns from retirement, many more players have done so
Yes, that is correct. Ben Stokes retired from ODI cricket in July 2022, citing the demands of playing all three formats of the game and concerns about his workload. However, he has since reversed his decision and will be available for selection for England's upcoming ODI series against New Zealand.
There are a few reasons why Stokes may have changed his mind. First, he may have felt that the ECB's urging was a sign of their support and confidence in him. Second, he may have realized that England need him in the ODI side, especially with the absence of Harry Brook and Jofra Archer. Third, he may have simply missed playing ODI cricket.
Stokes is a very talented cricketer and his return to the ODI side is a major boost for England. He is a world-class all-rounder who can bat, bowl, and field. He is also a leader and his presence in the team will be invaluable.
It is true that Stokes does not have a history of returning to cricket after retiring. However, there are a few factors that may make this time different. First, he is still relatively young and in good form. Second, he is motivated to help England win the 2023 ODI World Cup. Third, he has the support of the ECB and his teammates.
Only time will tell how Stokes' return to ODI cricket will go. However, it is clear that he is a major asset to England and his presence in the side will make them a more competitive team.

THE ASHES, 2023: DAY 1, 1st Test Match
After Australia's victory at the Oval in 1882, which was Australia's first test win in England, a notice was published in the British Newspaper called The Sporting Times. This notice was an obituary but not about any person rather it was about the death of English Cricket. The highlight of this notice was the infamous line "the body will be cremated and the ashes will be taken to Australia." England's first loss in their home conditions was a shocker for all the followers of English cricket and this notice published by The Sporting Times was the result of frustration, anger and immense disappointment towards English cricket as a whole.
However, this notice had large scale repercussions as the then English captain Ivo Bligh vowed to regain those ashes in the subsequent 1882-83 test series against Australia in Australia. Since the captain made such a statement before the away series in Australia, the media termed this series as a quest to regain the ashes. Consequently, each test series being played between England and Australia was called 'THE ASHES'
My honest opinion is that the context behind The Ashes and the subsequent quest to regain the ashes is the testament to the fact that cricketers are not bigger than the game of cricket and that all of them are liable to the ultimate stakeholders of the game i.e. the fans.
Back to 2023, this year's Ashes is termed as the ultimate test of England's new approach to Test cricket: Bazball. England under their new captain Ben Stokes have been largely successful with this new approach with 11 wins in 13 matches. Bazball essentially means to play aggressively and put the pressure back on the opposition irrespective of the situation. On being asked whether England would change their approach for The Ashes, Ben Stokes said that they would stick to their approach as they have built this approach over the past year or so & instilled confidence in this team to play freely without any unnecessary pressure.
Australia on the other hand are the reigning World Test Champions brimming with confidence & self belief with all their best players in roaring form. Australia throughout the last World Test Championship cycle have not been challenged though, except for India wherein they lost the series against India at home & had no answer to India's relentless onslaught. Hence dealing with England's Bazball approach would be very challenging for Australia & Australian Captain Pat Cummins said that they are raring to go out & give their best against England.
Day 1:-
1st session:
England opener Zak Crawley smashed the first ball bowled by Australian Captain Pat Cummins for a boundary through extra covers with the England Captain smiling heartily from the dugout. However Crawley's opening partner Duckett departed soon after with the scoreboard showing 22 runs. Ollie Pope came in at No. 3 & kept the scoreboard ticking along with Crawley. Both the right handers played the ball on merit & hit some exquisite boundaries in their 70 run partnership. Nathan Lyon got the wicket of the Pope just at the right time & England were 92-2 when their best batsman at the moment - Joe Root joined Crawley at the middle. Crawley completed his half century soon after with Root racing to 20 off just 33 balls. England were looking good with 30-32 run partnership between Root and Crawley when just at the stroke of lunch Scott Boland got the prized wicket of Crawley with an absolute snorter. England were 124-3 at lunch in just 27 overs. The genesis of Bazball is that batsmen should play aggressively irrespective of whether wickets are falling at the other end.
I would say this session belonged to England as they scored at a run rate of 4.5 despite of losing 3 wickets and the Australians seemed to be clueless against the English batters.
2nd session;
Hard-hitting batsman Harry Brook joined forces with Root post lunch & kept the run rate intact. Brook was dropped by Travis Head off Boland at 25 but he couldn't capitalize on the opportunity as he was dismissed in the most unfortunate manner against Nathan Lyon as the ball went up in the air with Brook having no idea where the ball is, it deflected on the stumps off his body & the Australians celebrated in unison as if they had earned this wicket. At 175-4, England's talismanic allrounder as well as their skipper - Ben Stokes marched out to the middle. However, Stokes didn't last long as he was caught behind of Josh Hazelwood trying a chase a ball on 5th stump line. Considering his form off late, Stokes could have taken time to settle in with Root batting so well at the other end but maybe Stokes wanted to walk the talk about Bazball being the skipper & hence he played that shot. Further on, England were in a spot of bother when Bairstow walked in with the score being 195-5. However both Root and Bairstow stitched a 45 run partnership as England were 240-5 at Tea, with Root scoring his 59th fifty in tests.
I would say this session was balanced out with Australia picking 2 important wickets and England scoring 116 runs.
3rd session:
The 3rd session started with an outrageous reverse scoop by Joe Root against Scott Boland for a six. Bairstow also joined the party as he played free flowing shots & raced to his fifty off just 51 balls. Both the batmen were absolutely dominating the Australian attack and a superb flick by Bairstow against Nathan Lyon ensured that their partnership crossed the 100 run mark. Further on, Bairstow was dropped on 68 by Alex Carrey off Hazelwood which was a regulation catch for a wicketkeeper. However Bairstow perished soon after as he was stumped trying to hit down the track against Lyon with England 297-6. Moen Ali who came out of retirement to play in The Ashes played some nice shots before being stumped by Lyon for 18 off 17 balls. Root played another reverse scoop against Pat Cummins in the very next over and reached 90 with Broad at the other end. England eventually reached 350 & almost immediately Broad was clean bowled by Cameron Green. Batting of the highest class by Joe Root as brought up his 30th Test hundred with England being 368-8. Just after completing his century, Root smashed Nathan Lyon for a couple of boundaries & subsequently England declared at 393-8 by giving Australians 4 overs to play.Warner & Khawaja, the Australian openers successfully negotiated Broad & Robinson with Australia being 14 for no loss at stumps on Day 1.
I would say this session was won by England as they smashed 153 runs losing just 3 wickets, the only positive for Australia in this session would be that they didn't lose a wicket in those 4 overs.
The declaration was a brave decision by England I feel because the wicket is totally flat & if Australian bowling attack can be smashed at 4.5 runs per over despite having Cummins, Hazelwood, Boland & Lyon, then England surely have their task cut out as they are heavily reliant on Anderson & Broad for picking up wickets. Moen Ali's record in Ashes is not too hopeful also as he averages 64.65 with the ball and tends to leak a lot of runs.
Looking forward to Day 2 now.

Harry Brook Takes Centre Stage: A Thrilling Encounter in the Ashes Test
Tumblr media
England and Australia are all set to begin their game in the third test match of the Ashes 2023 this Thursday. The game changer, Harry Brook, will be found batting in the middle position to improve England’s chances of winning the remaining test game. Follow DaddyNews247 for the latest cricket news online.
Australia, the all-time champions, have already won their first two games and are aiming to win all three of the last three games of the Ashes in 2023. England, who have struggled in the ongoing series, has made some minor changes to their 11-player team to increase their winning chances in the next series. Also, they have changed the position of Harry, which increases England’s hopes of winning the next game.
Harry Brook, the England cricketer, had participated in the Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Brook, a right-handed batsman, made his debut for Yorkshire County Cricket Club in 2016 and has been a regular member of the team across formats. He has played in domestic competitions such as the County Championship, the One-Day Cup, and the T20 Blast.
Brook is known for his aggressive batting style and has the ability to play attacking strokes. He has shown promise as a middle-order batsman and has been considered a talented prospect in English cricket.
Brook has captained the England Under-19 cricket team. Under his leadership, the team reached the quarterfinals of the ICC Under-19 World Cup held in New Zealand in 2018. In first-class cricket, Harry Brook has played for Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Also, he had scored over 2,000 runs in first-class matches, including several centuries and half-centuries.
In the ongoing Test tournament, Brook smashed the scoreboard with 132 runs at an average of 32 within two test games of the Ashes 2023. He made a half-century in the first inning of the second test match.
If we look at the Ashes series, England has always struggled a lot to win over the Champions, Australia. However, Australia won most of the series as compared to the England team. And also, they are hoping to win the Ashes title this season as well. If you are willing to take all the cricket news updates online, visit DaddyNews247.

Rahul Tripathi and Mayank Markande help SRH bag their first win of IPL season 2023
Sunrisers Hyderabad registered there first win in the Indian premier league season 2023 by defeating Punjab kings by 8 wickets at Uppal stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday.
Leg spinner Mayank Markande, playing his first match of the season, took 4 wickets while giving 15 runs as Punjab King got restricted to 143 at the loss of 9 wickets, and this total was made possible by captain Shikhar Dhawan's remarkable 99 out of 66 balls and Rahul Tripathi's unbeaten 74 out of 48 balls, which helped SRH ease to victory, reaching their target in 17.1 overs only.
Punjab Kings had some momentum heading into the break but needed wickets in the powerplay to put Hyderabad under pressure. The host decided to play England batsman Harry Brook, who scored 13 runs out of three balls and lost his wicket. Mayank Agarwal could not capitalise on his start either, as the Punjab kings built pressure with disciplined bowling. Hyderabad were in danger as they needed 98 runs off 68 balls.

But Tripathi, who took his time to settle down, switched gears and helped SRH cruise to victory. Markram also showed restraint initially before picking up the pace.
