Rumored casting breakdown for the Eternals
Back in November 2018 The Hashtag Show published a character line-up for the Eternals. Some of the characters haven't been cast (or announced yet), some characters seem to have been place-holders, so this looks a bit different from what we have seen during production.
These are the characters and descriptions posted by Charles Murphy on The Hashtag Show, the parts in cursive are my additions.
Karen - status: unknown
The studio is looking to cast an actress in her early 30s for the role of “KAREN.” Open to any nationality or ethnicity particularly Middle Eastern, African and Native American. Powerful, a timeless quality, a leader. Warm, nurturing and intuitive…
[Some people are guessing that Karen could have been a place-holder for Dane Whitman because he is the only human character that has been officially announced, but it’s just speculation at this point.]
Male Lead - status: unknown
An unknown male described only as a Greek God
Druig - cast: Barry Keoghan
It seems the villain of the piece will be the Eternal know as Druig, who first appeared in Eternals #11 in 1977. Though he was a Kirby creation, he gained notoriety after his appearance in Neil Gaiman’s 2000’s Eternals revival.
Druig possesses the conventional abilities of an Eternal, he can manipulate all forms of matter and energy, including the atoms of his own body. He can teleport, manipulate gravitation in order to fly, control the minds of others, and project energy from his body, usually from the hands or eyes. – In modern times, Druig served as an agent of the KGB in Russia, and found that he enjoyed torturing people. When Ziran the Tester came through Polaria, Druig planned to slay him using “ the Weapon”, which he had learned of by torturing his cousin Ikaris, but Ikaris disintegrated Druig before he could fire the Weapon. His body was then recovered by the Celestials , and put into everlasting containment at the Desecration Annex.
Piper (Sprite) - cast: Lia McHugh
The studio is looking to cast a lead female, 10-16 years old of any nationality or ethnicity in the role of “Piper”. Strong, charismatic presence with a magnetic personality. Wise beyond her years, articulate and quick-witted. Natural acting ability and some type of athletic background a plus. Though it’s not clear here, it seems that this might be the studio taking a new slant on the Eternal known as Sprite.
Elysisus - status unknown
Marvel is looking for an actress, 20-40, for the surprising role of Elysius
[No official word whether Elysius is still in the movie. No actress has been announced yet]
Forgotten One (Gilgamesh) - cast: Don Lee
The studio is looking for a male, ages 25-45, to play the Forgotten One, aka Gilgamesh! Gilgamesh became an outcast from his fellow Eternals when their ruler, Zuras, decreed that he had been too proud a meddler in the human world and confined him to a sector of Olympus. He was eventually convinced to come out of exile and journey to the mother-ship of the Fourth Host of the Celestials to assist the Eternals in the battle against the Deviants by the Eternal called Sprite. He possesses a number of super-human abilities common to the Eternals, but has trained some of them far beyond the norm. The Forgotten One is one of the most accomplished hand-to-hand combatants among the Eternals and usually arms himself with simple hand weapons such as an axe, spear or club. Gilgamesh first appeared in Eternals #13.
Ikaris - cast: Richard Madden
The studio is looking for a male, 20-40, to play Ikaris, an Eternal born over 20,000 years ago in the Eternal city of Polaria. His lifeforce is augmented with Cosmic energy and he has total mental control over his physical form and bodily processes even when he is asleep or unconscious. He has low level psychic abilities, enabling him to scan the superficial thoughts of any mind, less adapt them to his own. He can mentally create illusions as to describe himself.
Makkari - cast: Lauren Ridloff
The studio is once again on the lookout for a male, 25-45, to play the fleet-footed Makkari. Born in Olympia, one of 3 Eternal cities on Earth, Makkari is a member of the Eternals Technologist’s Guild and is skilled at designing and building high-speed vehicles. He possesses super-human, speed, strength and reflexes.
[with Lauren’s casting it’s clear that this character has been gender flipped for the movie]
Sersi - cast: Gemma Chan
For the role of Sersi, the studio is looking for a female, 20-40. Sersi is a fourth generation member of the Eternals. She differs from her fellow Eternals in her desire to live amongst humans. She does not age and can only be killed if her atoms are scattered.
Starfox - status: unknown
A pleasant surprise among those listed is Eros, aka Starfox. the brother of Thanos. The studio is looking for a male, 25-45, to play Eros of Titan!
Thena - cast: Angelina Jolie
An actress 20-40 is being sought for the role of Thena.
Thena was born in the city of Olympia in ancient Greece, and is thus one of the Eternals of Olympia. Originally named Azura, but her father Zuras had her name changed by royal decree to resemble that of Zeus’ daughter Athena to seal the treaty between their two peoples.
Zuras - status: unknown
Zuras was born in Titanos, first city of the Eternals, and is the son of the Eternals Kronos and Daina, and brother of A’Lars (Mentor). With his wife Cybele, he has a daughter Thena.Zuras was a warrior, and vied with his brother A’lars (whom he exiled into space) for leadership of the Eternals of Titanos following Kronos’ death. Zuras was the first Eternal to form a Uni-Mind by creating the first ritual of the Uni-Mind, and was therefore chosen to become leader of the Eternals of Earth.
Some thoughts on this line-up:
Notably absent are Ajax, Phastos, Kingo and Dane Whitman which are confirmed characters and will be played by Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Kumail Nanjiani and Kit Harington respectively. It’s unclear whether they replaced some of the characters on this casting sheet and the script underwent some changes since then, or if some of the characters were simply place-holders.

The Biggest Beer Stories of 2019 (So Far)
It’s been a busy year for beer. A constant flow of beer releases, mergers and acquisitions, openings, closings, and cultural reckonings has packed the last nine months fuller than a beer geek’s trunk at a can release.
VinePair took a look at the last nine months’ worth of controversies and conversations, and pared it down to the year’s most significant moments. This list includes issues we’re still talking about today, and a few you’ve probably forgotten. Whatever the case, jog your memory and take a trip down memory lane with us.
10. Low- and No-ABV Beers Won Over Health-Conscious Drinkers
The sober-curious movement took a stronghold in the beer industry. Dozens of breweries introduced low-ABV options for health-conscious consumers this year, from Dogfish Head’s Slightly Mighty IPA, to the forthcoming Bell’s Light Hearted IPA. Additionally, sales of non-alcoholic beers are on the rise. Off-premise dollar sales of non-alcoholic (NA) beer are up nearly 18 percent this year, reaching close to $78.5 million through Aug. 11, 2019, according to IRI. Pabst, Heineken, and Anheusuer-Busch announced new NA beers. And in September, VinePair named Athletic Brewing’s Run Time one of the most important IPAs on the market.
9. PBR Almost Died, Then Came Back Six Times
Pabst Brewing Co. took MillerCoors to court last year claiming the larger brand would put Pabst out of business. That lawsuit was settled, and Pabst has since gone wild with new releases. At the end of 2018, it launched PBR Easy, a lower-cal, lower-ABV version of the original brew. In April 2019, it debuted Pabst Blue Ribbon Non-Alc and Pabst Blue Ribbon Extra. In July, it began test-marketing PBR Hard Coffee, now available in select cities. In August, it launched Pabst Blue Ribbon Whiskey. Also in August came the most shocking announcement of all: PBR Stronger Seltzer, to be released in 2020.
8. Allagash’s Rob Tod Won a James Beard
In May 2019, Rob Tod, founder of Allagash Brewing of Portland, Maine, claimed a victory for the craft beer industry at large when he won the James Beard Award for 2019 Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Producer. This is a big deal for beer, as leaders like Tod work tirelessly to earn beer the place at the table it deserves. Tod follows in the Beard-winning footsteps of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery co-founder, Sam Calagione (2017), Brooklyn Brewery brewmaster Garrett Oliver (2014), and Anchor Brewing founder Fritz Maytag III (2008, 2003).
7. Beer Advertisements Tried to Be Less Sexist (But Failed)
In February, Anheuser-Busch’s Michelob Ultra Pure Gold attempted to catch young, internet-savvy audiences with its Super Bowl ad featuring Zoe Kravitz. The ad showed Kravitz performing an advertisement-friendly form of autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), all in a lush mountain landscape. We felt the ad still sexualized Kravitz, who sensually whispers and caresses the beer bottle throughout the commercial.
In June, Bud Light revamped its “Real Men of Genius” campaign, this time calling it “Internet Heroes of Genius.” Progressive? Not exactly. A-B partnered with Post Malone and the famously, allegedly misogynistic Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take” podcast. That same month, Boston Beer launched a new Samuel Adams campaign, “I can taste my beer.” It, too, missed the inclusivity mark: In the ad that includes a woman, she simply tells her male date she can taste beer on his lips. She appears to have ordered a mixed drink.
And finally, Coors Light kicked off a new series of ads in August. One ad, titled “Bra,” features a young woman in her post-work ritual, which culminates in a cold beer. The chill vibe won a lot of fans — The Takeout’s Kate Bernot called it “groundbreaking,” and Eater’s Madeleine Davies found it “remarkable” and “woman-friendly.” But it isn’t that cool when you think about it. While the ad is certainly relatable, we would have gotten the message without putting the focus on the woman’s breasts.
6. Beer Got the LGBTQ Icon It Deserves
Credit: Nicci Peet
Many efforts have been made by and for the LGBTQ community in the beer industry, but none inspired such international excitement — not to mention beer collaborations — as Lily Waite and the Queer Brewing Project. Waite launched her project in April 2019, and has since partnered with numerous breweries in the U.K., U.S., and beyond to produce beers benefiting LGBTQ organizations around the world.
5. Inclusivity Drove Conversation and Community
Beer industry content creators, brands, and events like Beer Kulture, Crowns & Hops, and Fresh Fest demonstrate the size and strength of the craft community in real time, all day every day. In February, the industry got a wakeup call when Beer Kulture’s Toni Canada published a viral blog post that turned a mirror on its collective blind spots and selective rage.
From the racism at Founders Brewing, reactions to which Canada’s post poignantly addressed, to Reckless Brewing and Mirage Beer Company‘s offensive and inappropriate marketing, certain corners of the beer industry learned, painfully, that latent racism is rampant. (Mirage Beer Company apologized, Reckless Brewing shuttered, and the Founders issue is, unfortunately, unresolved.)
Meanwhile, beer has made strides toward a more inclusive present and future. After creating a diversity committee and appointing J. Nikol Jackson-Beckham, Ph.D., as its first diversity ambassador last year, the Brewers Association has launched a diversity grants program to help fund beer-centric events run by marginalized groups across the country.
Jackson-Beckham kicked off 2019 by authoring the Brewers Association Best Practices for Diversity and Inclusion, and has spent the year speaking at conferences educating the beer industry around the country. She also founded a new nonprofit, Craft x EDU, and launched a social media campaign, #IAmCraftBeer, to show the many diverse faces of the beer community. The hashtag has hundreds, and potentially thousands, of participants on Twitter and Instagram.
4. The Bud Light Knight Started a Corn Syrup War
Some called it CornGate; we preferred #Corntroversy: In February, the fictional Bud Light Knight started a real-world war between Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors when the former brand’s Super Bowl ads called out competitors for using corn syrup in their beers, while Bud Light uses rice. Things escalated into a social media spat. Then, it turned into a lawsuit. Ultimately, A-B had to pull the Bud Light ads… but we fear the #Corntroversy lives on. The most controversial part? A-B uses corn syrup in several other brands, and either way, the sugar source is fermented out of the beverage (and turned into alcohol) before we drink it.
3. Boston Beer and Dogfish Head Merged
On May 9, Boston Beer Co. and Dogfish Head Craft Brewery shook the craft world to its core when the two brands announced they would “merge.” The joining of these industry pioneers meant combining the country’s second-largest and 13th-largest craft brewing companies. It was a big business move, and an emotional one for craft beer fans.
Later that week, VinePair caught up with Boston Beer’s Jim Koch and Dogfish Head’s Sam Calagione to discuss the merger (it’s really an acquisition), and what it will mean for both brands. Basically? Dogfish Head beer will be available in more markets, and Boston Beer adds a diverse range of flavorful beers to its portfolio. Everybody wins.
2. Resilience IPA United the Industry
Sierra Nevada’s original announcement about its Resilience campaign came toward the end of 2018, in the heat of the California Camp Fire. But Resilience IPA, the name for a beer brewed by close to 1,500 breweries across the country to benefit Camp Fire victims, was one of the most enduring stories of the year. Christie Merandino, production manager of Transport Brewing in Shawnee, Kan., told VinePair the campaign was the best thing she’d seen in the beer industry.
“[Sierra Nevada] put out a bat call and everybody answered,” Merandino said. “The vulnerability [of] Sierra Nevada putting out a recipe worldwide and saying, ‘we need help’ — when somebody so big can be so humble – I think that’s amazing.”
Although the campaign ran into some trouble in May (many participating breweries had not fulfilled their financial commitments to the campaign), “a large majority of breweries have now turned in their donations and we’ve raised about $9 million for Camp Fire relief thus far,” a Sierra Nevada spokesperson tells VinePair. The funds are being used to fund Butte Strong Fund initiatives, including providing temporary housing and shelter transition services, trauma reduction services, and funding Butte 211 Help Central, a hotline that connects Butte and Glenn County residents with low-cost or no-cost health and human services 24 hours a day. “There’s still a very long way to go for Butte County,” the spokesperson continued. “But without the very generous donations from breweries, suppliers, and, of course, beer drinkers, many of these projects would not have been possible.”
1. (White Claw) Hard Seltzer Took Over Beer Shelves, Sales, and Psyches
We never saw it coming. Well, actually we did, when we predicted hard seltzer was coming for beer back in January. But we didn’t know quite how hard America would fall for hard seltzer, especially White Claw.
White Claw inspired an internet phenomenon, dominated Fourth of July booze sales, and ripped into craft beer shelf space and dollar sales. It gave us false hope that beer sales were on the rise, when it was really White Claw dominating with triple-digit sales increases of its variety pack (320 percent) and black cherry flavor (308 percent) alone.
It may be killing some craft brewers’ buzz, but for others, it’s been an opportunity. CANarchy’s Oskar Blues and Squatters breweries have released their respective Wild Basin and Grandeur Peak spiked seltzers. Ninkasi launched an alcoholic seltzer brand, Pacific Sparkling. Platform Beer Co., now owned by A-B, launched an ongoing “seltzer project.” And Braxton Brewing’s Vive is now the “official hard seltzer” of the National Football League’s Cincinnati Bengals. (Of course, A-B blew Vive out of the water when it announced its Bon & Viv will be the official seltzer sponsor of the NFL.) Craft Brew Alliance, producer of Kona beer, launched low-proof Pacer in July 2019. Even PBR and Four Loko got in on the action, announcing plans to release “harder” hard seltzers in 2020. The hard seltzer category has officially spiked. Into it? Here is a chart of the calories, carbs, and alcohol in America’s best-selling hard seltzers.

From Baghdad to Iwo Jima, an anthem for the dead
Two Marines — one a veteran of Iraq and the other a survivor of Iwo Jima — remember the fallen and weigh the meaning of a national anthem.
Abner Greenberg doesn’t look like someone who was shot in the head on Iwo Jima.
At 93, he’s stockier and more solid than any nonagenarian I’ve met. The skin on his forehead and cheeks is smooth and has a healthy glow, and despite being mostly bald, his head bears no evidence of the Japanese bullet that went through the left side of it, leaving him unconscious for weeks and confused for months, unable to access his own speech.
When I shake his broad, meaty hand, I cannot tell that he hasn’t had feeling in his right arm for the last 73 years. He cannot button a shirt; his wife, Marilyn, helps him get dressed every day. “That’s the fun with us,” he says with a grin.
His aphasia is another result of the bullet that entered his head, but I don’t recognize that he’s using almost exclusively pronouns instead of proper names until he points it out himself. He is lively and sharp, easily the envy of men two decades younger.
Iwo Jima is familiar to most Americans thanks to a John Wayne movie and the famous photo of the flag-raising on Mount Suribachi, which is immortalized at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Va. It was a battle so fierce and horrifying it shocked even the battled-tested veterans of a country in its fourth year of world war.
Of the 82 Medals of Honor awarded to Marines during the entirety of World War II, 27 of them were for actions on Iwo Jima; of those, more than half were awarded posthumously. The island was death itself.
Imagine eight square miles where 29,000 lives ended in just 36 days.
Imagine: Somewhere in the vast Pacific Ocean is eight square miles of volcanic ash where nearly 29,000 lives ended in just 36 days. Greenberg was one of nearly 20,000 more who suffered a casualty but survived. Iwo was his fourth amphibious landing in 13 months, and he’s still shaken by the horror unleashed on the first day when 2,400 Americans were killed or injured. Two of them were the best friends he’d ever known. “We hung around together, y’know? We just … talked. ‘We’re gonna survive this thing,’ et cetera, et cetera.
“Well, we got off of the beach, and we had a spot … I got down with these two other guys, and all of a sudden it started lighting up. It got into the late afternoon and evening, and mortars were hitting us.”
This is how combat stories are told, by the way. Hours of terror and stress that shatter lives get compressed to a sentence in the service of a more interesting narrative.
“We got hit by mortars, all three of us. And, uh—” His voice wavers. “I got to Barney. Barney Aloysius Cochrane, who was my best friend, my leader, everything that I needed to get through what I went through … and I just couldn’t leave him for that moment. He was dead. I was shaking all over, and I was crying. And frozen, absolutely frozen.
“And then I realized that someone was moaning, and it was Schultz. George Andrew Schultz.” He pauses. A long pause. “I couldn’t get the corpsman, but I knew he was like 100 yards from me. I patched him up the best I could, hoping that in the morning I could get him [out] alive, because he was breathing. And I did all I could to hold him. And this corpsman got to me when it was still early [in the morning], and they pulled him down to the beach. I thought he made it.”
Abner and I served in wars that began 62 years apart, but we share this: You don’t say your friend’s full name if he made it out alive.

Marines in Kuwait prepare for war
‘I’m confident that this will be over soon.’
I met Brian Michael McPhillips at the end of our time at The Basic School in Quantico, Va. TBS is a six-month course that teaches Marine lieutenants the bare bones of leading an infantry platoon, even though most will go on to become specialists in other fields: aviation, artillery, logistics, supply, and so on. For our class of 240 students, there were three openings for tank officers. McP and I got two of them.
He was forthright and exacting, a New Englander with dark hair and icy blue eyes that hid nothing. He could bludgeon you with honesty or sarcasm, and like many Massachusetts natives, he had just enough charm to mitigate his asshole streak.
In the winter of 2001, we reported to Fort Knox together and joined a class of Army lieutenants, most of whom were reservists or National Guardsmen. Brian made no effort to hide his disgust for what he deemed their lack of knowledge, professionalism, and physical fitness. I tended to agree, but I at least tried to be nice to our colleagues.
McP had no time for niceties. He cared about training for war and keeping his Marines alive in battle; making friends wasn’t on his to-do list. Besides, he had me.
We were assigned to tank battalions on opposite sides of the country but ended up in the same desert for war. McP arrived in Kuwait a couple of weeks after I did, and his unit camped several kilometers away from ours. Still, he hitched a ride over one day and sought me out, no easy feat in a camp of four thousand Marines. I was out training with my platoon when he came by, so I didn’t see him that day. I never saw him again.
The war was mostly boring, except when it was terrifying. I’ve started forgetting even the memorable parts; I only recently recalled killing two Iraqi fighters with a coaxial machine gun — their bodies flung into the air like they’d stepped on cartoon springs — when I revisited an old diary. But the map is imprinted in my brain; the names of the cities and towns shine like beacons through the fog, checkpoints that put the war in order: Basrah. Nasiriyah. Diwaniyah. Numaniyah. Aziziyah.
Aziziyah is about 40 miles southeast of Baghdad’s outskirts, on the banks of a bulbous C-curve of the sidewinding Tigris. I didn’t fight there, but Brian did. My guess is the ambush came from the palm grove; it’s where most ambushes originated that spring, because they offered cover and restricted the movement of tracked vehicles. He was on top of a Humvee leading the scout platoon, returning fire with a .50-cal machine gun when he was shot in the head. I’ve heard rumors that the last thing he said was “I FUCKING LOVE THIS SHIT!” I’ve believed it for so long that it may as well be true.
Baghdad fell a few days later. I learned about his death 10 days after that. When my friend Charlie told me the news, I was standing in a garbage dump outside Baghdad; we’d left the city because tanks presented an “aggressive posture” that ran counter to the new mission of nation-building. We were going home.
When I boarded the Navy ship that would bring me back to the States, I checked my email for the first time in five months. On Jan. 31, 2003, McP had sent a characteristically terse note.
Friends and Family,
We are leaving for Kuwait this evening. Thanks again for all the support. I’m confident that this will be over soon. God bless.
Brian
The subject line was one word: goodbye.

‘At what point do we do something about it?’
On the internet, I have watched a war of words, waged mostly among people who haven't fought for their country. One side, pained by a protest occurring during the national anthem, will say that our troops fight for the flag. The other side, typically, will point out that servicemen and women swear an oath to defend not the flag, but the Constitution.
I grew up on Air Force bases, and wherever we lived, the theater played “The Star-Spangled Banner” before every movie. My father, a pilot who served 22 years, had a habit of haranguing teens and young airmen for wearing hats or talking during the anthem. It became a running bit for our family: We’d identify disrespectful culprits in the crowd and watch my father’s blood boil until he marched over to correct them.
Later, as a student in ROTC, I spent three years on the color guard, skipping tailgates to present the colors at windswept Big Ten football games, where my drunken classmates watched from the stands.
I still stand at attention for the anthem, from the first bars until the final note ends. I don’t think I can be any other way. Like a Catholic making the sign of the cross, I stand for the anthem. It’s a rite tied to my identity, ingrained by family and belief.
Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images
When Colin Kaepernick first sat during the anthem — before he consulted with the former Green Beret Nate Boyer and began kneeling — I took offense. How could I not? Kaepernick rejected a ritual that was part of my identity as an American. But it was also his First Amendment right to protest peacefully. I swore an oath to defend the Constitution, not my feelings.
As Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie advised in Americanah:
Hear what is being said. And remember that it’s not about you. American Blacks are not telling you that you are to blame. They are just telling you what it is. If you don’t understand, ask questions. [...] Sometimes people just want to feel heard. Here’s to possibilities of friendship and connection and understanding.
I had to say it to myself: It’s not about me. It’s not about the troops. It’s about Kaepernick’s experience as a black man in America. And he started the protest because he saw black men dying preventable deaths. “I remember thinking our posture was like a flag flown at half-mast to mark a tragedy,” wrote teammate Eric Reid in The New York Times.
If you read or listen to what black Americans have to say about police violence, chances are good that at some point you will see the names of the dead repeated. Philando Castile. Michael Brown. Tamir Rice. Terence Crutcher. Freddie Gray. “I couldn’t see another ‘hashtag Sandra Bland,’ ‘hashtag Tamir Rice,’ ‘hashtag Walter Scott,’ ‘hashtag Eric Garner,’” Kaepernick said to reporters in 2016. “The list goes on and on and on. At what point do we do something about it?”
Saying their names is the vigil the living keep.
I’ve only recently realized that veterans do the same thing. More than 70 years after his best friends died on Iwo Jima, Greenberg still says their names whenever he can: Barney Aloysius Cochrane. George Andrew Schultz.
And Brian McPhillips. He’s as dead as Barney and George, as dead as Tamir and Terence. The circumstances of their deaths were different, but details matter little to the dead. Their lives ended in their youth, and they stay that age while the survivors grow middle-aged and old, the memories fading but not the names of the dead they loved.
Saying their names is the vigil the living keep, a flame tended so the light they brought to the world isn’t extinguished entirely.
“Life is ... it’s people,” Abner tells me. “It’s touching people.” It’s the end of our conversation, and we’ve been talking about war and the anthem and Black Lives Matter.
“We’re doing it to us. What they’re doing to our people — how do we allow it?” I’m not sure who he means by they. The aphasia that robs him of specificity makes it unclear if he’s talking about his war or my war or police violence. Maybe it’s everything.
“I recognized, I’m a culprit. Which I didn’t recognize before. ‘We gotta win this war. The Nazis are there, we gotta win this war.’ But it became beyond that.
“It wasn’t winning this war — it’s never having any wars.”
