I think the best indication for me of why Hawkeye and BJ are too dissimilar to have become friends in any other situation besides both being assigned to the same MASH unit is that, when Hawkeye is upset about their situation as draftee doctors miles from home, he typically rails against the system that put them there and/or anyone that supports that system; when BJ’s upset about the same thing, he tends to just lash out at Hawkeye who is entirely blameless and often just attempting to offer him comfort.

Which makes sense. Hawkeye is a much safer target than the American military-industrial complex. But it also shows the stark difference between how they process emotions, problem-solve, and their values.

#i’m not even especially angry at bj for this #it’s a realistic reaction and one many people would have in the same scenario #hawk really only gets away with doing things like busting into the peace talks because he is the protagonist of a hit sitcom #but in-universe neither he nor beej know this #so it just ends up meaning that they have very different politics in practice #even if they’re in theoretical agreement about things #hawkeye takes direct action whereas bj just vents but doesn’t do anything that might rock the boat #and in a civilian setting i think that would’ve aggravated hawk if he’d met him there and made him less likely to pursue a friendship #anyway #emerson rants #m*a*s*h #hawkeye pierce #b.j. hunnicutt
