Smoll headcanon I've been thinking of but don't know if I'll keep it, where Thermite has OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder):

First, it's nearly canon that he tends to have bad thoughts quite often. Maybe they could be intrusive and super overwhelming, and not "just" gloomy (not that having gloomy thoughts is less serious.)

Maybe he suffered an early trauma as a child. In my headcanon, his father died when he was super young, and his family was in a difficult financial situation afterwards, maybe that could be the initial trigger. Or maybe that could be the loss of a house due to a fire, which could also explain his interest for chemistry and things that explode. Or maybe it could be genetic.

>> Things that could translate his OCD:

- Permanent fear of losing a friend or a loved one (not really helped by his personal story) and having frequent obsessive and graphic thoughts about them dying in various ways.

- Permanent need to check on his loved one when they're asleep, even putting his finger under their nose to make sure they're breathing, not trusting his hearing enough.

- Permanent need to double check any doors, alarms, gas, electricity and water supplies several times a day in the house, the dorm, any hotel or temporary room. Gets up in the night to do so.

- Permanent need to triple-check that the bullets in their training weapons are fake even though he knows they are and have already been checked. He secretely bites on them or puts some in his mouth.

- Permanent need to disassemble items and gadgets to make sure they are not faulty (as shown in the Chimera cutscene) or to understand them and check the accuracy of the blueprint (for evaluations). He also needs to disassemble a lot of other things, including his food: he separates everything in his plate, and tabbouleh is his absolute nightmare haha.

- Permanent need to readjust his hand wraps, and rub where it itches even though he's been rubbing the zone for 10 minutes. Need to have rubbed every inch of his skin.

- DPDR episodes if alone for too long (which could go well with his "social butterfly" canonical attitude) or sleep-deprived.

>> How he may deal with it:

- Stays as much as possible in contact with people, and never stays alone for more than 30 minutes

- Rarely sleeps alone. When his loved one is away on a mission, he goes back to his former FBI dorm or even with the GIGN or the SAS depending on the situation.

- Gives in to his compulsive behaviors but never without humor, trying to make it look like a casual thing.

- Pretends he's getting old like Thatcher and needs to double check things because he forgets if he did them or not.

- The rare (only?) time he told Harry about his intrusive thoughts, Harry told him not to force them out contrary to what he might have thought. He thus tries to let them pour, while focusing on someting brighter and funny to distract himself from them (which is not always a success)

- Sometimes he gives it a good cry, under the shower or in the bathroom for instance.

- He talked about his violence-related intrusive thoughts with his loved one, but never about his sexual ones because they often involve colleagues and it's hard for him to think about it

- He's overally undiagnosed, and tries a few techniques here and there without really knowing "what's wrong with him". So far, he hates Hibana's meditation exercises but he doesn't tell her haha

>> How it may affect him professionally:

- He's one of the "annoying" ones with Jäger (who has super strict routines and plannings) that checks everything a great number of times. Sometimes it clashes with Jäger too, because once the latter finished filling his checklist, Thermite can't help but get things out of the crates/car to check if the thing is REALLY there and if it's not going to accidentally tear through the car and reach the engine/tank and create an explosion while they're driving and kill them all.

- When waiting for a long time outside of an objective or for the mission's next step, anxiety kicks in but not always on the disabling part: it can be quite handy because he might think of bad cases scenarios that weren't foreseen by others, might be faster to detect potential explosive atmospheres or hazlocs etc.

>> The good sides:

- Well, it's easy to feel safe around him because he checks/checked everything.

- He's a sucker for good stories, humor, and entertainment that might help him out of his bad thoughts and is thus always in for a movie or gaming night (he'll just check the wirings three times, smell the cables and put any bottle of water at the other side of the room.)

- Because of his permanent struggle for control over his mind and intrusive thoughts, he's very good at keeping a secret.

- Super attentive to details, whether they're material (something new in a room), or personal (someone changing their perfume).

- Hugger. Human weighted blanket and personal radiator.
