[long post imminent]
You may not know this, but magical girls are in at Onetoothpig Studios. I mean, there's Sailor Moon Month, my #justmagicalgirlthings tag, and not to mention the endless art that I find on my dash...
Well, I've been mulling it over, and I've decided:
I'm starting my own magical girl (NON-RAISING) project!
But before I introduce you to yet another wave of OCs, I should probably give a little backstory...
So, when I was a wee lad, no bigger than a fire hydrant, I used to watch this show called Magical Do-Re-Mi (which you might know as Ojamajo Do-Re-Mi). Well, I didn't really watch it per se - I really only saw little snippets of it - but it was a huge and crucial step into my first forays into the world of writing, as the show and its influence bled into everything I wrote.
So, I was looking back at some of the stuff I wrote when I was 6 or 7 years old, and I thought to myself: what if I took these characters (as well as some more from the annals of my memory) and turn them into magical girls? Full-circle kinda thing, y'know?
Now it's OC time. Or at least it will be once you dive under the cut...
Naraline
Real name: Zinco Melana
Age: 15
Zinco is a cheerful and bubbly girl. Moving into a new neighborhood and a new school, Zinco aims to come out of her shell and make friends. After a rough day at school, she is attacked by a monster - and there she finds Ceres, a fairy, who gives Zinco a small orange gem, allowing her to transform into Naraline.
Dev Notes: Zinco is one of the characters who appeared frequently in my older works. She was inspired by Hazuki/Reanne (the orange girl) from Do-Re-Mi. In keeping with her earlier portrayals, I decided to give her a peppy personality. She's the main character now, though, instead of being a deuteragonist.
Nightshade
Real Name: Modeloo Fericon
Age: 15
From the outside, Modeloo seems like a tough-talking, no-nonsense tomboy. That prickly exterior belies a heart of gold, however, and she does her best to protect those who cannot protect themselves. She can be very headstrong, however, which often lands her in trouble. Good thing the rest of the team is there to keep her in check when she's on the prowl as Nightshade!
Dev Notes: Some of my stories actually had Modeloo as a villain, but in her absolute earliest appearances she was a regular, neutral-aligned character. For her modern appearance, I went with a "chaotic good" sort of thing, and took a little inspiration from Sailor Jupiter and other strong characters that protect innocent people. Her original Do-Re-Mi inspiration was Aiko/Mirabelle (the blue one).
Hielle
Real Name: Marita Evien
Age: 16
Silver-haired Marita is what you'd call an achiever. She's most always at the top of her class, and has many academic accolades under her belt. But behind all the good grades lies an overly pressured youth, sometimes overpushing herself to keep up her image. Fortunately, she has a friend group she can really be herself around, and her smarts, as well as her passion for ice skating, certainly give the team the upper hand as Hielle.
Dev Notes: Marita is the final character listed here that hails from my ancient literature. In her initial appearances, she was a baby for some reason, but she was aged up a tad later on. Knowing this, I decided to age her up again to a teenager. She (and the rest of the characters featured here) isn't based on or inspired by any existing characters.
Whispuff
Real Name: Daphne Starling
Age: 14
For as long as she could remember, there were things Daphne could just... sense. She could feel energies that most other people couldn't. While this scared her at first, it soon became a sign to her that she was destined for something great. That feeling was realized when a talking fish named Pasha came to her in a dream. Pasha explained that her mother, Alina, used to be a magical girl herself, and Daphne's ability was a premonition of her destiny. Ever the eager beaver, Daphne readily agreed to carry on her mother's legacy as Whispuff. She might be a little too idealistic sometimes, and hates it when things don't go as planned, but don't count her out - the power of dreams she wields is exceptionally potent!
Dev Notes: Okay, so you're probably wondering what the heck is up with the dream theming, right? Well, Daphne herself actually comes from a dream I had once. I pretty much saw one single image of her there, and she was in a purple Propeller Suit from New Super Mario Bros. Wii for some reason, so I didn't get much of what she looked like. Alina's pretty much the same story - I heard her name in a dream somewhere and just had to use it.
Ventanna
Real Name: Gail Knott
Age: 15
Gail always saw herself as pretty unremarkable. She wasn't good at much, and she wasn't bad at much, she was just... average. Even worse, she didn't really fit in with everyone else, so she tried not to draw any attention to herself. She still longed to talk to people, though, and so one day she summoned up her courage and struck up a conversation with Zinco. Having experienced similar social struggles, the two became fast friends, and Zinco introduced her to the rest, who readily accepted her. As Ventanna, she has the power to control wind, a power she still needs to try and control...
Dev Notes: Gail is pretty much a one-off character that I had knocking around in my head for all of a single night. Her original concept was that she caused powerful winds whenever she said her name, so I kinda adapted that into it being a power she is yet to tame.
And the last one:
Paraguava
Real Name: Jacqueline Beaufor
Age: 16
If there was one thing that Jacqueline loved more than anything else, it was taking out a bunch of parts and building something with them. As her rich father owned a technology firm, she fell in love with machines. She was, unfortunately, locked out of her passion due to her being taught to be "proper" from a young age. But when people try to control an outcome, fate can often fight back harder. Using all the knowledge she had stored up reading engineering textbooks and manuals in secret - along with the help of Gear, her newfound fairy companion - she was ready to put her passions to the battlefield as the umbrella-wielding Paraguava!
Dev Notes: Ah, Jacqueline. Jacqueline had a pretty raw deal, much like Gail. Pretty much her only character trait was that she had an umbrella, so I had some serious fleshing out to do - and some differentiating from Daphne because in my head they were pretty similar.
And... that's pretty much all of them! Now what do I call this project...
Ooh! Since they're from past memories, how about...
Mempa Magi
Yeah, it's a cheesy title, but it'll do for now.
And that's my newest batch of OCs and my brand-new magical girl project! I'll flesh it out and tell you more as I go along, but this should be satisfactory. Hope you all like it - this has been stirring in my brain for months on end!
And yes, I will be adding this to my pinned post, so look out for that.
mutual tag time. @klugpuuo @fluffernauto

Ojamajo Doremi Animals ep 1: Separated but soon reunited
Doremi was crying in the girls' toilets at the Misora school, but a gleam appeared before her and her friends; Hazuki, Aiko, Onpu and Momoko beckoned. - Huh?
~ {Episode 1: Separated but Coming Together!} ~
Doremi stopped in front of the school entrance gate, hesitated to enter, that was going she become without her friends? She thought, tears came to her eyes just that allusion, all these memories she had shared with Hazuki, Aiko, Onpu, Momoko and his "daughter" Hana-chan would remain forever etched in his memory. .. When suddenly, someone rather big shoved her, it was a boy, with black hair and half-long, he looked like the one Dorémi loved in his first year in primary, was it this boy? The one who allowed Dorémi to wish to become a witch in order to have the courage to confess her love to him? - Excuse me, I did not see you, be careful not to stay in the passage. Here people move a lot and do not pay attention to what is going on in front of them. He winked at the young college girl. Doremi blushed while answering a small "Yes, I'll be careful next time" shyly. She was still omnibulated by the boy.
Hazuki entered the school right away, - Aloooors? What is it like to be in a school of great musicians tell me? - Euuh ... The same as you probably, said the violinist timidly. - Is it your separation from Doremi and others that puts you in this state? It's nothing big at all! You and I will become the best friends in the world believe me! She sneered like crazy. Hazuki no longer listened to Rika chattering incessantly. She was looking at the height of the ceiling, it was huge, just like the memories that amplified her melancholy, the world of witches and her best friends were already missing, a tear flows down her cheek. Hazuki felt deep inside herself that the adventure was far from over, but even so, she did not really believe it ... -So what? Have you become mute? wondered Rika, who has just noticed the absence of Hazuki's mind and has also made a mistake. Hazuki jumped, a dream bubble just burst, and an expression quite unpredictable. - Huh?
Aiko was at times happy and nostalgic: On the one hand her parents' reunion was the best thing that had ever happened to her, on the other, her painful separation from Dorémi and the others was the worst thing that had happened to her . Living happily with her parents together was the reason she wanted to become a witch before she knew the girls. She regretted, Osaka has a school, but not friends like Doremi. If she had stayed in her old house, she would have been with Doremi, who would not be alone anymore, as she feared on the day of the graduation. The young sportswoman kept repeating the things that were said that day so as not to burst into tears, but it was very difficult, and it happened. She screamed in the middle of the classroom as she collapsed on her classroom desk. - DO RE MI!
School of Comedy. Onpu was reviving during her first acting class, she was to play Juliet in Shakespeare's famous play. His text hung in his sleepy hand. - Onpu! The professor had just woken up the young artist. - It's been ten minutes since you're supposed to give a reply! If you continue like this you will never become an actress! "Yes sir," she replied, red with shame. The other students were laughing, but Onpu was crying softly. Like Aiko, she repeated everything that had been said to Dorémi on the day of the graduation. - We'll meet again one day ... I'll come back for the holidays ... We'll never forget ... - Onpu !? the teacher wondered. She was talking alone, from the top of the plasterboard tower, but what she said had nothing to do with the room. - What are you playing Onpu? The latter was anesthetized, her brain was no longer thinking, her limbs were frozen, her complexion was turning pale and she collapsed on the floor. - Onpu! The panicked professor shouted.
In the United States, in a district of New York, Momoko was moving slowly, she had taken the road to school, almost the same as it took three years ago. Momoko was happy to have found her old friends, even Marie, but without Grandma Cake nothing was comparable. She did not know if she had made the right choice, if the ghost of Mamie Gâteau had advised, after all, she did not say anything specific about this choice. But Momoko did not feel ready to leave her parents, though, she would have seen them quite often anyway, while Dorémi and the others are unreachable ... She met her best friend at the time. - Hey Momoko! How are you this morning? They engaged the conversation, even though Momoko was dreamlike. She talked about her memories in Japan to her friend, she was delighted, she wanted to know Helena, and Doremi. She remembers the video that was made in her honor, this tape had become the most precious thing she had. But Momoko wanted Doremi and the others to be by his side, they missed him terribly, just as his best friend was missing in Japan.
- Youpi !! The council of witches turned to the throne. - I'll be reineuh! I will be reineuh! It was Hana, the future queen of the witch world. She had settled on the throne. She was ready to be crowned. - Calm down Hana-chan. In a few minutes, the ceremony will begin, you will become queen. announced Jou-sama, the current queen. - Promise your majesty! she said, laughing. - Well. The queen came closer to the throne, she stood behind Hana. - Ceremony can begin! she said loudly enough for the council to hear, as well as all the inhabitants of the witch world. His voice was powerful enough to cover the whole kingdom. Even Oyajide could hear it, in the nursery of witch babies, even by actively cleaning up. The latter had heard this announcement, as Hana was the baby he preferred in the crib, he hastened to snap his fingers and found himself in the throne room. - Cuckoouuuu Oyajiiiiide! exclaimed Hana. - Hello my little princess! he replied, laughing softly. The queen gracefully withdrew the crown from her head. By the powers conferred on me, I bequeath my powers and the throne to the young Hana-chan. She placed the heavy crown on the head of little Hana who sank under this weight too high for her. - Youpiii! She shouted in spite of the pain she was experiencing. I am a queen! I am a queen! I will be able to do everything I want! She jumped from the throne and ran down the stairs as fast as possible. She stopped short in front of the crowd attending the ceremony. - Let the party begin! She grabbed her magic ball and began to pronounce her formula which was useless for any magic. - Purolin Pololin Flora Flora Pi! I want Dorémi and the others to come here right now!
Each of the girls saw a light appear before her. This gleam reflected the hopes of each of them: to see her best friends again. This light grew and became so intense that the landscape faded, he could not fight, no ... he could not ... fight ... I can not ...
The little group found itself in the throne room. - Huh? they exclaimed all in chorus. - Mamaaaaaaan! - Hana-chan ?! Doremi could not believe her eyes, she had just been teleported. - Your Majesty, what are we doing here? she exclaimed - I'm no longer Queen Doremi, address yourself to your daughter, Hana. - Hana is already queen? It's been a while since we left each other! - As long as the weather has made your sadness last. It did not seem long, did it? All acquired. - Hana-chan, tell me, why are we here? - Because I called you! - Yes, but why did you call us? - Because I wanted to see you again and I want you to leave! She began to sob. - Do not cry Hana-chan! The queen, or rather the old queen, approached. - Maybe you can become apprentices again, if you want to. - But what will happen to us if we are to become witches afterwards? - You will not be obliged, your mission will be to unite the world of humans and witches. - And when will it be done? - You can remain human or become witches, as you wish, in any case, you can come into the world of witches as many times as you want. - Oh yes! Exclaimed Hana-chan, full of joy. - We are very grateful to you for your majesty! But this mission, it is likely to be long right? - Exactly. - How long are we going to put on? - Years certainly, that's why the world of humans will be entitled to a life expectancy as high as that of witches, so you will not be alone, without your parents, and you can live quietly outside your home. mission. Do you agree? "Yes your Majesty," said they all with enthusiasm. - Well, Camille, brings the magic consoles. It came with consoles straight out of nowhere, each console represented an animal head in the favorite color of girls. Doremi's was a pink dog's head, Hazuki's, an orange rabbit, Aiko had a blue cat, Onpu, a purple bird, and Momoko was getting a yellow hamster. The girls took their consoles. - Transform you! Each girl had a different choreography and music to become an apprentice. The costumes were very pretty, decked with frills, bandages and lace. - You will hold a pet shop, you have reversible costumes as the year of the arrival of Momoko. The girls tapped on their consoles clinging to their chests and the costumes flew away, turned and fell back on their bodies. It was a pretty nurse outfit also adorned with frills and lace. The girls looked at each other and found each other in front of such pretty outfits. - It's so cute it looks like little nurses! Hana-chan said excitedly. - Yes, they will also be veterinarians, they will take care of sick animals in the neighborhood. The queen looked at the girls tenderly and woke up abruptly. - Now, all to the good old Mahou-dou shop!
The shop had remained the same, Dorémi spent all his days admiring it that summer, to remember all the good memories that were still lying in this magical and symbolic place. - Say your formulas and make the magic circle! - Yes!
- Pirikala Paporina Pépélatou Pépélato! - Piripili Poupaloura Poupalou! - Pamékilak Lari Lori Palou! - Pouloulou Prune Fami Fami-fa! - Paparona Palouta Palali Papon! - Purolin Pololin Flora Flora-pi! All together, they invoked the magic circle, it was multicolored and danced to the sound of the world's most joyful music, shapes and symbols were spinning at the same rate as the magic circle. The queen raised her hand and ordered: - Transform this shop! A flash of lightning struck the neighborhood, and a pet shop was born. She was beautiful, small animals were beautifully drawn on one of its facades. Then the light went off. - See you soon. said the queen's voice.
Doremi woke up in her bed, her room was the same for four years. Was it a dream?

Bookshelf Briefs 12/26/17
Absolute Duo, Vol. 2 | By Shinichirou Nariie, Takumi Hiragiboshi, and You Asaba | Seven Seas – I gave this one more volume, but last time I said that if you didn’t realize there was another released you’d barely care, and if anything I was understating it. Most of the volume consists of the class fighting against each other, showing off their various cool moves. Of course, it all ends up with the characters we’re familiar with facing each other, and the introverted busty girl turns out to have a sword as large as her chest. The trouble is that there are so many other series coming out with magical schools, including many with only one major male character, and this does not have anything that lets it stand out above the pack. The definition of ‘meh.’ – Sean Gaffney
Arpeggio of Blue Steel, Vol. 12 | By Ark Performance | Seven Seas – Most of this volume is dedicated to trying to take out Kongou, the arrogant blonde warship on the cover who sees herself as invincible and whose fate is therefore almost pre-determined. Again, we see the value in not only treating the mental models as real beings with values and feelings, but also trusting others—Iona wins as she trusts the humans on her crew to do things for her so that she can concentrate on this. Even the two chibis who were captured last time, whose names I still can’t really remember, are able to see this and compare it to their own side. That said, Iona does make them wear tracksuits as punishment, so it’s clear that the good guys torture too. An excellent mecha series. – Sean Gaffney
Flying Witch, Vol. 4 | By Chihiro Ishizuka | Vertical Comics – Um… cute! Fluffy! More cute! Seriously, some series I don’t have enough to say about for full reviews, but Flying Witch may be the first series that I genuinely enjoy but don’t even have enough to say for a Bookshelf Brief. Sometimes the focus is magical, as when Makoto meets up with her bike-riding senpai for a status report, or befriends a pokemon-like creature on the beach. And sometimes it’s pure high school slice-of-life, as when they all make lunch in home ec class… and forget to cook the rice. My favorite chapter may have been the apple-picking, which was filled with amusing sight gags and lots of cuteness. There is no plot and no character development, but Flying Witch remains light fun. Very light. – Sean Gaffney
Golden Kamuy, Vol. 3| By Satoru Noda | Viz Media – Everything I said about the second volume applies here. There’s quite a bit of nasty gore, including intestines being used in ways they probably shouldn’t be, much killing of animals, a whole lot of urine and feces, etc. There is also a large amount of what amounts to early 20th century Ainu recipes, as we learn the finer arts of how to kill and eat various animals in the wild. Fortunately, there is also some light relief this time around, coming from some very eccentric side characters, as well as our heroes getting drunk on sake, with all that that entails. I’m still not sure where Golden Kamuy is going with its treasure map, but as long as it has fun characters and delicious (if sometimes gross) food, I’ll keep reading. – Sean Gaffney
Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, Vol. 27 | By Shinobu Ohtaka | Viz Media – So for about two-thirds of the volume, I wondered if Ohtaka was really going to pretend that she had killed off Alibaba after all, as well as sent Judar! Into! Spaaaaaaaace! But not quite, as we now have the separate adventures of Judar and a sort of… Alibaba toy… fighting aliens on another planet. Which is probably for the best, as it puts them away from the war that begins in this volume. The best part of the book is the growth, painful though it is, of Aladdin, who has to come to terms with the fact that Hakuryu is likely correct. “I may be unhappy… but I don’t want YOU to decide how I live.” The fact that it’s done sympathetically makes it even worse, and Aladdin has a lot to think about. Next time: war! – Sean Gaffney
Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, Vol. 27 | By Shinobu Ohtaka | VIZ Media – Despite appearances from last volume’s cliffhanger, Hakuryu actually won his duel with Alibaba, as the latter has had his soul banished to another dimension by Hakuryu’s new djinn. That’s certainly dramatic enough, but Aladdin’s victory over Judar is even more chilling—he casts a permanent spell on him that causes him to continue moving in the same direction forever, “no matter what objects he strikes or what damage he takes.” Cool! Part of me sincerely wishes both of these deeds were allowed to stick, but oh well. I can’t say I am sad to see Alibaba’s spirit and Judar reunited on an alien world. Meanwhile, war is brewing and it’s looking mighty intense. I am already looking forward to one day undertaking a marathon reread of Magi. I suspect it’ll be even more potent when consumed without interruption. – Michelle Smith
Re:Monster, Vol. 3 | By Kogitsune Kanekiru and Haruyoshi Kobayakawa| Seven Seas – I suspect that the readers of Re: Monster fall into two categories: young teenage boys who want masturbation fodder, and older boys (at least at heart) who want to laugh out loud at the pure ridiculousness of this power fantasy. Everything in this volume is the same as the last two, only MORE. Mi becomes a hot dhampir (complete with spectacles, to make her even more of a Rider ripoff), Kichi and E hook up in the most muscley romance ever, the redheaded swordsman eats monster meat and thus also starts gaining weird abilities (and oral skills), and this remains the most hilariously NOT T-for-Teen series Seven Seas has ever released. Recommended if you’re shameless or a young teenage boy. – Sean Gaffney
Say “I Love You,” Vol. 18 | By Kanae Hazuki | Kodansha Comics – Sometimes shoujo series end by simply connecting all the dots, and that’s what happens in this final volume. The hooked up couples get married or have kids (or both), Megumi finally returns to Japan and gets decent work again (and a boyfriend, possibly, though that’s going to take a lot longer than just a pat ending can deliver), and everyone is happy and content. I’ll admit it, it seemed a bit too pat for me at times, but after eighteen volumes of a whole lot of angst, I am willing to see everyone here smiling and married off. This was one of the first Dessert series to be licensed, along with My Little Monster, and we now have a flood of titles from that magazine, so it was a trailbalazer. I’ll miss it. – Sean Gaffney
Yowamushi Pedal, Vol. 7 | By Wataru Watanabe | Yen Press – The end of day one of the Inter-High is in sight! With only two kilometers to go, Imaizumi must help propel Kinjou to the finish line, and struggles mightily to stay even with his counterpart from Hakone. But just as the two aces make their break, who should appear (in a very effective two-page spread) but super-creepy Midousuji, who has saved his energy for this moment! What ensues is a three-way battle for first place, in which you get sequential panels with dialogue like, “Haauuughh!!,” “Rarrrrgh!!,” and “Haaargh!!” All of the racing stuff is exciting, of course, but my favorite moments were Hakone’s Toudou being really complimentary to Onoda, Makishima worrying about his teammates, and Onoda’s insistence on day two that he is not going to leave a struggling Tadokoro behind. I’m sad I have to wait until April for more! – Michelle Smith
