@blxsscd-x-fxrsakcn: ‘♬‘ — SONGS I LOVE
ferryman - shayfer james, will wood! i am a HUGE fan of both these dudes, and had the surprise privilege of seeing them perform this live!! it's a bop and a half, and it also gives off huge hellblazer vibes in its storytelling structure.
so often in the comics, there'll be one major thing going on and they explain to you how far-reaching and grim the consequences are with a one-page series of vignettes summarizing the awful events that resulted from it. the final zombie scene from city of demons is a really good example of this, and when constantine looks at the newspaper clippings on haine's web-wall during the joyride arc. it's a simple, clinically gruesome way of summarizing the extensive reach of magic and the ways it toys with human minds and perceptions to personalize the nightmare, and it's an effective way of displaying how detached constantine's become from the horrors he sees every day, to the point where it's just like reading off a grocery list. still horrifying, but distant. like, no wonder he has no faith in humanity anymore, this is kind of his general attitude by late hellblazer:
people want each other but they want themselves more / even when your lover's something new to live for / it's to die for, therefore to kill for / black has white so go to the light my love
the song also hides a little kernel of optimism in there, a little reason to live amongst the depressing chaos of interpersonal relationships, which i also think aligns with constantine's general mindset:
if up has a down there's another side / in there's an out so it's worth a try
no matter how personally awful people can be to each other, there's still a reason to try. you'll still have "champagne with cyanide", but there was love that came before that, and there could have been love that came next, too. constantine's always going to think it's worth a try to keep pushing forward, no matter how bleak it gets around him.
+ song for gabriel, that motherfucker (affectionate): to carry on the train, villainous thing - shayfer james has that kind of self-righteous delight in shedding an ideal to display the sinister reality of yourself / the world that i picture when i think of gabriel.
waste no worry for the world / let it be a tragedy of love and glory / while they wait by gates of pearl / we'll be building palaces in purgatory
