It is not possible to “prove” that George Washington did “not” throw a silver coin across the Rappahannock, or that he did “not “ cut down a cherry tree with his little hatchet. Yet historians believe both stories apocryphal.

It is not possible to “prove” that no intentional symbolism was intended when the present square or oblong shape of the Masonic Apron was adopted (within the last hundred and fifty years), nor that the conventionalized triangular flap in “not” an allusion to the Forty-seventh Problem and the earliest symbol of Deity (triangle), nor that the combination of the four and three corners does not refer to the Pythagorean “perfect number” seven. But hard-headed historians, who accept nothing without evidence and think more of evidence than of inspirational discourses, do not believe our ancient brethren had in mind any such symbolism as many scientific writers have stated. The view-point of the Masonic student is that enough real and ancient symbolism is in the apron, enough sanctity in its age, enough mystery in its descent, to make unnecessary any recourse to geometrical astronomical, astrological or other explanations for shape and angles which old gravings and documents plainly show to be a wholly modern conventionalizing of what in the builder’s art was a wholly utilitarian garget.

As Freemasons use it the apron is more than a mere descendant of a protecting garment of other clothing, just as Freemasons are more than descendants of the builders of the late Middle Ages. If we accept the Comancine theory (and no one has disproved it) we have a right to consider ourselves at least collaterally descended from the “Collegia” of ancient Rome. If we accept the evidence of sign and symbol, truth and doctrine, arcane and hidden mystery; Freemasonry is the modern repository of a hundred remains of as many ancient mysteries, religions and philosophies.

As the apron of all sorts, sizes and colors was an article of sacred investure in many of these, so is it in ours. What is truly important is the apron itself; what is less important is its size and shape, its method of wearing. Material and color are symbolic, but a Freemasons may be - and has been many - “properly clothed” with a handkerchief tucked about his middle, and it is common practice to make presentation aprons, most elaborately designed and embellished, without using leather at all, let alone lambskin. Mackey believed color and material to be of paramount importance, and inveighed as vigorously as his gentle spirit would permit against decorations, tassels, paintings, embroideries, etc. Most Grand Lodges follow the great authority as far as the Craft is concerned, but relax strict requirements as to size, shape, color and material for lodge officers and Grand Lodge officers. Even so meticulous a Grand Lodge as New Jersey, for instance, which prescribe size and shape and absence of decoration, does admit the deep purple edge for Grand Lodge officers.

It is a far cry from the “lambskin or white leather apron” of the Entered Apprentice, to such an eye-filling garget as is worn by the grand Master of Masons in Massachusetts - an apron so heavily encrusted with gold leaf, gold lace, gold thread, etc., that the garment must be worn on a belt, carried flat in a case, weighs about ten pounds, and can be made successfully only by one firm and that abroad!

At least as many particular lodges cloth their officers in embroidered and decorated aprons, as those which do not. The Past Master’s apron bearing a pair of compasses on the arc of a quadrant, may be found at all prices in any Masonic regalia catalogue. So if, as Mackey contended, only the plain white leather apron is truly correct, those who go contrary to his dictum have at least the respectability of numbers and long custom. Universal Masonic experience proves the apron to be among the most important of those symbols which teach the Masonic doctrine. The Apprentice receives it through the Rite of Investure during his first degree, when he is taught to wear it in a special manner. The brother appearing for his Fellowcraft Degree is clothed with it worn as an Apprentice; later he learns a new way to wear it. Finally, as a Master Mason, he learns how such Craftsmen should wear the “badge of a Mason.”

That various Jurisdictions are at odds on what is here correct is less important than it seems. Many teach that the Master Mason should wear his apron with corner tucked up, as a symbol that he is the “Master,” and does not need to use the tools of a Fellowcraft, but instead, directs the work. As many more teach that the Fellowcraft wears his apron with corner up, as a symbol that he is not yet a “Master,” and therefore does not have a right to wear the apron full spread, as a Master Mason should! Into what is “really” correct this paper cannot go; Jeremy Cross, in earlier editions of his “True Masonic Chart” shows a picture of a Master Mason wearing his apron with the corner tucked up.

What is universal, and important, is that all three - Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft and Master Mason - do wear their aprons in different ways. All are Masons, hence wear the badge of a Mason; one has progressed further than another, and therefore wears his apron differently as a sign that he has learned more. Incidentally, it may be noted that aprons seldom are, but always should be, worn on the outside of the coat, not hidden beneath it. Alas, comfort and convenience - and, in urban lodges, the evening dress of officers and some members - have led to the careless habit of wearing the apron not in full view, as a badge of honor and of service, but concealed, as if it were a matter of small moment. The use of the apron is very old - far older than as a garment to protect the clothing of the operative craftsmen, or to provide him with a convenient receptacle in which to keep his tools. Girdles. or aprons, were part of the clothing of the Priests of Israel. Candidates for the mysteries of Mithras in Persia were invested with aprons. The ancient Japanese used aprons in religious worship. Oliver, noted Masonic scholar of the last century, no longer followed as a historian but venerated for his research and his Masonic industry, says of the apron:

“The apron appears to have been, in ancient times, an honorary badge of distinction. In the Jewish economy, none but the superior orders of the priesthood were permitted to adorn themselves with ornamented girdles, which were made of blue, purple and crimson; decorated with gold upon a ground of fine white linen; while the inferior priests wore only white. The Indian, the Persian, the Jewish, the Ethiopian and the Egyptian aprons, though equally superb, all bore a character distinct from each other. Some were plain white, others striped with blue, purple and crimson; some were of wrought gold, others adorned and decorated with superb tassels and fringes. “In a word, though the “principal honor” of the apron may consist in its reference to innocence of conduct and purity of heart, yet it certainly appears through all ages to have been a most exalted badge of distinction. In primitive times it was rather an ecclesiastical than a civil decoration, although in some cases the pron was elevated to great superiority as a national trophy. The Royal Standard of Persia was originally “an apron” in form and dimensions. At this day, it is connected with ecclesiastical honors; for the chief dignitaries of the Christian church, wherever a legitimate establishment, with the necessary degrees of rank and subordination, is formed, are invested with aprons as a peculiar badge of distinction; which is a collateral proof of the fact that Freemasonry was originally incorporated with the various systems of Divine Worship used by every people in the ancient world. Freemasonry retains the symbol or shadow; it cannot have renounced the reality or substance.”

Mackey’s dictum about the color and the material of the Masonic apron, if as often honored in the breach as in the observance, bears rereading. The great Masonic scholar said:

The color of a Freemason’s apron should be pure unspotted white. This color has, in all ages and countries, been esteemed an emblem of innocence and purity. It was with this reference that a portion of the vestments of the Jewish priesthood was directed to be white. In the Ancient Mysteries the candidate was always clothed in white. “The priests of the Romans,” says Festus, “were accustomed to wear white garments when they sacrificed.” In the Scandinavian Rites it has been seen that the shield presented to the candidate was white. The Druids changed the color of the garment presented to their initiates with each degree; white, however, was the color appropriate to the last, or degree of perfection. And it was, according to their ritual, intended to teach the aspirant that none were admitted to the honor but such as were cleansed from all impurities both of body and mind.

“In the early ages of the Christian church a white garment was always placed upon the catechumen who had been newly baptized, to denote that he had been cleansed from his former sins, and was henceforth to lead a life of purity. Hence, it was presented to him with this solemn charge:

“Receive the white and undefiled garment, and produce it unspotted before the tribunal of our Lord, Jesus Christ,that you may obtain eternal life.”

“From these instances we learn that white apparel was anciently used as an emblem of purity, and for this reason the color has been preserved in the apron of the Freemason.

“A Freemason’s apron must be made of Lambskin. No other substance, such as linen, silk or satin could be substituted without entirely destroying the emblematical character of the apron, for the material of the Freemason’s apron constitutes one of the most important symbols of his profession. The lamb has always been considered as an appropriate emblem of innocence. Hence, we are taught, in the ritual of the First Degree, that “by the lambskin, the Mason is reminded of the purity of life and rectitude of conduct which is so essentially necessary to his gaining admission into the Celestial Lodge above, where the Supreme Architect of the Universe forever presides.” Words grow and change in meaning with the years; a familiar example is the word “profane” which Masons use in its ancient sense, meaning “one not initiated” or “one outside the Temple.” In common usage, profane means blasphemous. So has the word “innocence” changed in meaning. Originally it connoted “to do no hurt.” Now it means lack of knowledge of evil - as an innocent child; the presence of virginity - as an innocent girl; also, the state of being free from guilt of any act contrary to law, human or Divine. “An Emblem of Innocence” is not, Masonically, “an emblem of ignorance.” Rather do we use the original meaning of the word, and make of the apron an emblem of one who does no injury to others. This symbolism is carried out both by the color and material; white has always been the color of purity, and the lamb has always been a symbol of harmlessness and gentleness. Haywood says:

“The innocence of a Mason is his gentleness, chivalrous determination to do no moral evil to any person, man or woman, or babe; his patient forbearance of the crudeness and ignorance of men, his charitable forgiveness of his brethren when they willfully or unconsciously do him evil; his dedication to a spiritual knighthood in behalf of the value and virtues of humanity by which alone man rises above the brutes and the world is carried forward on the upward way.” The lambskin apron presented to the initiate during his entered Apprentice Degree should be for all his life a very precious possession; the outward and visible symbol of an inward and spiritual tie. Many, perhaps most, Masons leave their original aprons safely at home, and wear the cotton drill substitutes provided by many lodges for their members. But here again the outward and evident drill apron is but the symbol of the presentation lambskin symbol; the symbol kept safely against the day when, at long last, the members of a lodge can do no more for their brother but lay him away under its protecting and comforting folds. Truly he has been a real Mason, in the best sense of that great word, who has worn his lambskin apron during his manhood “with pleasure to himself, and honor to the Fraternity.”

Trans Issues and Christianity

For my first post, I’d like to talk about something I care about in depth - Christianity, transgender issues, and how they intersect. As a trans woman, devout Christian, and politics junkie this intersection comes up very often for me, and I have a lot invested in it. The effects of this go far beyond just me and people like me, though. The topic strikes deep into the core of Christian notions of gender and sex, making the consequences of this debate extremely important - not just because it impacts trans people’s lives and the current political climate, but also foundational ideas of the extremely powerful and influential religion of Christianity.

In the big picture, trans issues being at the forefront of social discussions is a somewhat new thing. In 2015, Slate released an article titled “Conservative Christianity’s Discovery of Transgender Issues Worries Trans Christians“. It discusses how a group of self-described biblical counselors held a conference on “transgender confusion”. The results were not surprising; the article gives it the description of a “one-sided succession of rants against modernity and cultural change that made little or no attempt to address how religious congregations could go about welcoming individuals who are transgender and/or struggling with gender dysphoria.“ Since then, discussion has only picked up.

For example, the Church of England had visibly warmed up to trans people, going so far as to consider special services to mark gender transition. This predictably brought backlash along with it. Meanwhile, the twitter of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Committee, the social issues arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, regularly brings up transgender issues, and is currently advertising a book on the topic. On the flip side, the United Methodist Church recently commissioned a nonbinary deacon.

To truly understand this debate, we need to understand not just the arguments commonly brought up, but the relevant traditions within Christianity. It is no surprise that gender roles are prevalent within it. The two major ancient, apostolic churches (Catholicism and Orthodoxy) have never supported women within any of the major religious roles. Methodism was a pioneering group for women preachers within Protestantism, and they started as recently as 1761. Even then, complete gender equality in church roles within Methodism wasn’t achieved until 1956.

In terms of scripture, there seems to be clearly defined gender roles. Paul does a majority of the complementarianism, with writings such as Ephesian 5:22-33, 1 Corinthians 11:1-16, and 1 Timothy 2:8-15. While there is a lot of exegetical work (which I won’t spend time elaborating on here) that goes into interpreting these seemingly plain verses, some of which suggests gender complementarianism is a misinterpretation, the majority agrees that the Bible does mandate certain gender roles.

Lastly, the issue of sex, both the biological kind and the action, is fundamental to much Christian thought, even if most don’t even know about the important conclusions which have led to our present. A long time ago, a person known as Augustine came into the Christian fray. Augustine had some ideas, among the most notable being the doctrine of Original Sin. Augustine posited that sex and sexuality is intimately tied to the curse of sin, passed through mankind. This is why Adam and Eve were ashamed to be naked; this is why an erection, basically a prerequisite to procreation, is involuntary; and this is why all humanity is cursed for the sins of the first humans. Sex is inherently bad, in a way, according to Augustine. The reason Augustine’s thoughts are important is because he was an extremely important figure in the development of Catholic doctrine, and even if many tenants of his thought are disagreed with today, the consequences of his thought - for example, that sex is something which should not be talked about lightly - remain in conservative doctrine.

These three points - gender and tradition, gender and the Bible, and sexuality - are important to this topic, because modern gender theory throws it all into chaos. It challenges notions of innate differences and the connection of genitalia to psychology. When so much revolves around sexual biology, what happens when that is disturbed? What about when the existence of intersex people becomes a key point? It requires rethinking longstanding views, and to institutions based in preserving the heavenly truth once and for all delivered to mankind, that’s scary.

I understand the challenges it presents to conservative and moderate Christianity, and how it’s unnerving. Despite this, I still have huge criticisms with how it’s been handled. Even discarding the very obvious criticism of “they disagree with me”, the topic has been handled atrociously by major powers in Christianity, such as the Southern Baptist Convention and the Catholic Church.

Appearances and reports suggest the Catholic Church has butchered transgender issues badly alongside LGBT issues in general. Right before the Catholic Church held the Synod on the Family in 2015, a priest by the name of Kryzysztof Charasma came out as gay and in a relationship with another man. This priest, who had formerly been a part of a major doctrinal organization within the Church and had written much on theology, was rapidly fired and defrocked (removed as a priest). He later was interviewed and had many interesting things to say about the inner workings on the Church.

“The reaction to gender really began after the UN conferences, after Cairo and Bejing. The Vatican responded to those conferences with panic and disorder...

“In this situation, you cannot reflect about reality, about this thing you refuse. Therefore, the reaction to gender studies is to reject... When Darwin wrote his book, the reaction of the Catholic Church and of Christianity as a whole was to reject it. The only strategy was prohibition – not objective study, reflection, or dialogue – of human thought, which the Church perceives as not coherent with the doctrines of the faith. The same thing is now happening with gender studies.”

There is much more like this in the interview. This confirms what I had suspected beforehand about Catholicism: it is either unable to handle new challenges to gender and sexuality, or refuses to. With all due respect to the beautiful and fascinating theology of Catholicism and the intelligence of the people who study it, it seems clear to me that in this field it has grown outdated and is now entering a state of petrification. It doesn’t even need to necessarily shift completely towards the more modern perspective to avoid this; it just has to actually engage with modern gender philosophy in an intellectually honest way. As of right now, this is not what the Catholic Church is doing.

While Catholicism is the larger and more influential group, the Southern Baptist Convention’s rhetoric is worse. While acknowledging the existence of gender variance and the scientific research on the subject, they pose opposition with essentially no real solutions. While Catholicism may be inherently neutral in basically refusing to engage, the discussion surrounding the resolution to condemn transgender identity involves complete anti-intellectualism, suggesting no longer classifying being transgender as a mental illness was political and not scientific. Other lovely descriptors involve “revolt”, “confusion”, and “rebellion”; as well as suggesting being transgender involves a lack of humility. It’s not just a refusal to engage - it’s harmful, anti-intellectual rhetoric that is explicitly aimed at the political scene. While it’s been a while since that resolution was passed, if the ERLC twitter is anything to go by, the SBC hasn’t gotten much better.

Many of my criticisms could be fixed through honest, open dialogue. Intellectual isolation does not lead to finding the truth, but to other-ing people, relegating them to the threat and not to someone trying just as hard to get through life as you are. In this exchange of ideas, people are humanized, and bad ideas are shown for what they truly are. Earlier it was mentioned how the Catholic Church uses intellectual isolation to handle trans issues. It’s been noted more than once that the SBC has a similar issue, although intentionality is more unclear. Simply put, they appeal only to their own “experts”, and anyone with an outside perspective is not included. This is always bound to lead to intellectual stagnation, and it has.

I believe there are Biblical ways to reconcile the concept of transgender people with the Bible without even touching topics like Biblical infallibility. The Bible does acknowledge, if passively, the existence of intersex people within the category of “eunuchs”, and in one case explicitly lays out that they have exception from normal rules. Given that modern scientific research suggests that trans people’s brains are literally the opposite gender, should it be true, it’s not a stretch to posit that they are the exception to the rule. I don’t believe that the idea that God forms everyone in the womb is particularly Biblically founded, given the only two relevant verses I know of are poetic. There is the traducian view of reproduction as well, which suggests that souls are created along with bodies in procreation, autonomously. There is more to my views which I may cover in a later post, but not here; the point is that there is a legitimate case to be made for conservative and moderate Christians that being trans is Biblically acceptable.

This debate is complex and has far-reaching implications. Beyond even the very significant effect it has on trans people, it touches foundational principles of what is arguably the most important religion in today’s world. The debate deserves respect and understanding from all involved, and while a solution likely won’t be found soon, it is imperative that Christians, politicians, and LGBT people collaborate to ease tensions and understand each other. There is more to it than hatred or rebellion; it is something which touches the deepest parts of people.

ACTIVE ESCAPE: MONASTERO SANTA ROSA

When pondering life in a monastery, images of stoic monks engaged in the pursuit of tireless abstinence come to mind; perhaps you conjure their unfulfilled passions, heavy sacrifices, and somber dutifulness underscoring a lifetime of pious devotion. Well, you shall have to park those preconceptions to one side the moment you hear the Monastero Santa Rosa‘s bell welcome you to the Hotel – a charming and sonorous tradition ringing out from a simpler era. Whilst an ancient spirituality pervades Monastero‘s stone corridors, this is perhaps the most well-invested, immaculately finished gem on Italy’s glistening Amalfi Coast, and was the scene of my latest wellness pilgrimage. Blending the owner’s meticulous eye for detail, a masterpiece organic vegetable garden nourished by lashings of Italian sunshine, a ‘gourmet heavyweight’ chef, a heavenly infinity pool, a sumptuous spa complex, and exquisitely appointed rooms, the hotel nails the very essence of Amalfi magic. I visited in order to road-test their newly launched ‘Health & Hike’ package, and am thrilled to recount the special experiences I encountered over my 3 days. THE HISTORY…

… is unusually rich at this castle hotel, and to perceive its heritage is to understand it’s magic. Magnificently perched 500 meters up, nestled atop a rugged outcrop of Paleozoic Limestone, standing tall with both an imposing majesty and elegant simplicity, this was once home to the Santa Rosa nuns of the Dominican order. In the 17th Century through their isolated correctional activities, they gained celebrity for two things; i) the effectiveness of the herbal medicines they whipped up in the monastery’s apothecaries, and ii) inventing the Sfogliatella Santa Rosa, a super-delicious hybrid of a croissant and a crispy custard pastry, garnished with a noble glacé cherry. In their time were both angelic healers and demonic bakers!

Fast-forward to the new millennium, and current owner Bianca Sharma, previously a Montessori school teacher, passed by on her first trip to the Amalfi Coast, looking up from the sea, and was ensnared by its magic. It has taken a degree of vision and tenacity that I can’t relay in a blog post, for her to establish this remarkable institution. Her strength of will and warmth of character has imbued this hotel with the passion to do its heritage justice. Strangely, I know what she felt on that first trip, as I also took that same boat excursion 3 years ago whilst in Positano – I was struck with intrigue by the Monastero’s muscular structure, enquired about it, and mentally noted it for ‘later’.

THE ROOMS

Whilst they might appear to have existed as a hotel forever, the 20-room Monastero first opened its doors only in 2012. This means that the finish remains high-quality and relevant in a way that many other Italian hotels won’t ever achieve, and yet the rooms lose none of their charm because of it; the discerning traveler will absolutely appreciate this.

I stayed in their signature Rosa suite and was bowled over by the limestone bathroom – a masterpiece of elegant lighting, underfloor heating, feng shui views and architectural design.

The room’s floors are beautifully crafted solid oak. The bedside tables provide for USB charging (YES!), and the sockets by the armoire refreshingly cater to all national plug types. That flavor of innovation is blended with traditional touches such as actual keys with weighty brass fobs engraved with the room name, wooden confessional furniture, the delicious Santa Maria Novella cedar potpourri harking back to monastic days, and that simply absurd, timeless ocean view presiding over the plunging depths of the Gulf of Salerno. THE CUISINE

This hotel boasts a remarkable culinary pedigree which should make Ristorante Il Refettorio at Monastero ‘worth a detour’. The sprawling zonal kitchen is run with precise Teutonic oversight by the endearing and charismatic Executive Chef Christoph Bob, a titan of gastronomy who’s worked with Alain Ducasse at the Plaza Athenee, Torre del Saracino in Naples, Taillevent in Paris, and Petermann’s Kunststuben in Zurich – we’re already up to 10 Michelin stars in that background, and there’s far more to go! Here, his entire gourmet operation is run with the same weighty seriousness as any of those kitchens, and the results speak delicious volumes. There is a complete fixation on freshness, quality and local sourcing of ingredients – three virtues I constantly push to my PT clients in London, so Christoph’s Mediterranean style immediately caught me.

However, that was magnified after he took us on a superb guided tour of the ‘Chef’s Vegetable and Herb garden‘, which sits on the sunny, north facing slope above the Hotel. Back when the monastery was in the business of religion, nuns would plant their own foods in this very garden; their cuisine was reportedly quite dull and mainly consisted of broths, soups, and stews; yet even then it was a lush plot, blessed with the same unspoiled Vesuvian soil that hosts today’s garden. There I sampled many of the ingredients I reassuringly recognized from my meals; fresh sweet peas from within their bitter husks, intensely flavorsome strawberries, peppery rocket, artichoke, lemons, rosemary, thyme, verbena, basil, chamomile, lettuce, fresh garlic, almonds, and tomatoes. There are countless more treasures planted beneath the volcanic soil waiting to sprout as the season unfolds, but the dedicated gardener for this organic facility will see to that! I can attest that it leads to the highest-quality, local freshness and superb cuisine; this is precisely how I have always aspired to cook myself, but the practicalities of England render it pretty difficult!

Chef explained that in factories, vegetables are covered up and pumped with extra water and chemicals – water obviously doesn’t taste of anything and the chemicals aren’t always good for you. Here the gardeners allow the vegetables to take their time; there’s no external help given. This ensures all the vegetables planted are absolutely bursting with maximum flavor, and here I discovered the most delicious lemons I’ve ever sampled. In fact, they were so delicious you could eat it with the pith and waxy skin still on! Drizzle a little honey on top and you’re in citrus heaven.

Layer on the health credentials of the Mediterranean diet, plus some broader ‘hipster’ touches, and then we’re cooking with gas. Gourmet egg-white omelets, multi-grain porridge with new textures, whole grain croissants! Hands down my favorite 3 dishes were;

IL PASSAGGIO NELL’ORTO (pictured below) – A mixture of seasonal vegetables from their garden prepared in various ways and mixed with a dried fruit granola and goat cheese mousse.

LA PEZZOGNA ALL’ACQUA PAZZA – Local sea bream cooked “Acqua Pazza” style served with a parsley flavored potato mash over a Vesuvian cherry tomato sauce.

LO SPAGHETTONE DI GRAGNANO (Pictured below) – Whole grain Gragnano pasta (considered amongst the highest quality produce in the world) made especially for the Monastero, generous amounts of Lorenzo No.5 olive oil, local Salerno tomatoes, and a sprig of basil from the garden. As well as a dry rich Parmesan from the south of Italy and a sprinkling of good old British Malden sea salt. Authentic simplicity at its best.

THE HIKE

A key part of the Health & Hike package, it’s a 2-3 hour excursion around the mountains, followed by a picnic lunch. I was quite overwhelmed by the dramatic, diverse and at times challenging landscape of the Amalfi coast, not to mention the sheer beauty of the waterfalls in the national park. April is a particularly stunning time of the year to visit, as nature is just waking up after the short winter; the most delicate wildflowers are slowly unraveling for the new season.

Our exceptional guide Marco (an accredited natural biologist) led the small group up winding paths, through hidden forest tunnels, and onto the crests of great mountains. I discovered a completely different aspect of the Amalfi beauty, not just the type you’ll find [legitimately] admiring the waterfront towns from the ocean, nor the view you get from sitting on a hotel terrace, but a view from high above in the pristine woodlands looking down onto endless forest and vegetation and observing a much more distant, soft shoreline.

Tour guide Marco possessed Italian charm and passion, paired with great knowledge of the natural landscape and its history. This was not just a tour of the natural, but the historical too, and I feel I’ve taken much away from it. These are ancient unspoiled paths; old stone steps carved out of the mountains which a thousand years ago were used by the medieval citizens of the Republic of Amalfi to go about their business of paper making and ironmongery.

After a gorgeous hour of walking the sound of water grew altogether stronger. It’s an intensely soothing song and the sanctuary of this protected Nature Reserve with its gushing falls was quite spectacular to behold.

Altogether the tour left me with a far greater understanding of this part of the world – the history and culture of the people who once lived there and who now live here. Aside from that, it’s not just a walk to condition the physical skeleton, but for the soul too. The pure, fresh air, the closeness to nature, the heights, smells and sounds. It’s extremely invigorating and I couldn’t recommend it more!!

THE WELLNESS FACILITIES

SPA: Following my Hike, I enjoyed an hour-long Arnica Body-Wrap Treatment at the hotel’s award-winning spa. As one would always hope, this is one of the best-invested parts of the hotel. The concept is one of a labyrinth of chambers, each serving a functional purpose, be that tepidarium with scented-salt foot wells, the beautifully lit nest of saunas, the experience showers, the room temperature re-acclimatization zone, or any of the treatment areas.

GYM: On an outdoor terrace with bamboo roofing to protect from the sun, this is one of the most scenic workout views I’ve encountered, and watching the ocean traffic chug past helps while away the minutes on the bike!

INFINITY POOL: Words will only do it a disservice…

SUNSET TERRACE: The highest point of the hotel, there’s a >180-degree panoramic vista from here, with an all-day gentle ocean breeze to cool you. I found this a superb place to take it all in; of course, one can never really take it all in, as there’s simply too much breathtaking beauty on offer here. None of the photographs in my piece do the coast justice, but the best place to struggle with that conundrum is on this terrace!

TO WRAP…

Like the nuns in solitude, the Monastero Santa Rosa offers something quite private, an opportunity to escape your worldly concerns, and instead focus on fusing yourself with the beautiful Mediterranean lifestyle, to reconnect with some truly restful tranquility. The Health & Hike package is not cheap at EUR 2,490 per couple (3 nights in a deluxe sea-view room, inc. gourmet breakfast, hike, spa treatment, guided garden tour, and meal), but to my mind, that is genuinely superb value for money relative to the other top-end Amalfi coast destinations; Monastero’s very much the new kid on the block, and a future classic. You have the distinct impression they’re sitting on something very special here which, like the trees in their olive grove, will grow ever richer with each passing season.
