You run and tell your friends that you're leaving me
They say that they don't see what you see in me
You wait a couple months then you gon' see
You'll never find nobody better than me

Kanye West's Heartless: A Song Ahead of its Time
In recent history, the use of autotune amongst rappers and artists has been widely popularized. In fact, I'd argue that with it, many artists gave rise to fame because of their ability to create good quality music without having the most "majestic" voice, if you will. However, because of the lack of technological comfort and knowledge back then, many songs featured the artist and their pure voice in their work. However, as mentioned before, society and its technology has advanced, which has granted artists many more tools in their arsenal, to improve their music. And with Heartless, it was one of the major pieces that utilized autotune. While it did not create autotune, "at the time it was released, Auto-Tuned vocals for rappers was basically unheard of" (Mixdown). So I would say that Heartless was one of the leading pieces in the rap industry, that paved the way for the use of autotune in songs.
Furthermore, with the use of autotune, Kanye also pushed a minimalistic style to rap, opposed to rappers like Eminem or Tupac's faster style of rap. The song is much slower and more harmonic, almost like a pop song. And so, many have stated that "West broke genre barriers with this record" (Pop Matters). Now, we have rappers who take on a traditional style of rap that includes a fast paced style of music, like Kendrick for example, but we also have rappers that take on this dual gender style to rap as well. Normally, it takes great courage for rappers to take on a unique style or approach to a song, and it doesn't always work out however I would not say that this applies to this song. I have reviewed Kanye many times on this blog, and I would say that by now I have made it clear that he is a very unique person that simply goes against social norms. This song I would say however, is an example of a situation where that's actually a good thing, and it can lead to a revolutionary change in the rap industry. Now, I will say that it might be a bit TOO much credit, to attribute all of the success of autotune and genre merging in the rap industry to Kanye, but this song definitely contributed.
I would say that overall, Kanye definitely has had his ups and downs, but this song would definitely be considered one of his highlights in his career. In fact, according to Billboard.com, Heartless was actually one of his top performing singles. Going back to what I mentioned earlier, I think that with autotune and the rise of social media, smaller rappers and even influencers are able to create professional-grade music and reach and grow their own audiences and fanbases. And again, without giving Kanye too much credit, it's safe to say that he definitely did contribute to this movement. And so, I would say that in the larger scope of things, Heartless was a very significant piece of music.
