BRITISH MADE TITANIUM WATCHES
Tumblr media
Let's talk titanium watches and more specifically - titanium. Discovered in Cornwall in 1791, and there we have a nice link to the Blacklamp Carbon watch we made which has a structure akin to the crazy geology of the cliffs of Milook Haven near Bude. Titanium was named after the Greek Titans. It is the 7th most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. It has been detected in the sun, M-type stars, meteorites and it makes up 12.1% of moon rock composition. But that is generally an oxide because pure metallic titanium is very rare. 95% of all titanium ore is refined into titanium dioxide, a white pigment used in pretty much everything that is white - paint, sunscreen, toothpaste, paper, plastics, etc... Seen here is the Blacklamp Carbon, not for sale.
So why is titanium such a cool material for watches? Titanium reacts immediately with air to form a thin non-porous passivation layer that continues to grow for about 4 years to a thickness of 25nm. A shield that protects the body of metal. This makes titanium watches as corrosion resistant as platinum ones. It is non-magnetic, it has the highest strength to weight ratio of any metal. Titanium is roughly 40% lighter than steel but just as strong. Twice the strength of aluminium but only 60% heavier and it is here that we have the titanium watches paradox. Whilst it is a commonly accepted metal for watch cases it falls short for luxury heft. On paper it should be the number one metal for cases but alas, if it is not heavy it is not precious. It is more expensive than steel as a raw material and is more difficult to machine but within the luxury sector cost is not the limiting factor in its ubiquity, it is weight.
That said, and thanks the Citizen X-8 in 1970 who were the first to use it, we see more titanium watches on the market every year, so perhaps the on-paper specs make more sense than our senses. Rolex launched its first ever commercially available full titanium watch in 2022 marking an important milestone for the metal's luxury value. Even though every other watchmaker of note has had to make a titanium watch, very few are vaulted and coveted like their steel counterparts. As of 2023, you could look at Audemars Piguet, Grand Seiko and Vacheron Constantin for some stellar examples.
Where does the Strange Lights fit in? For starters the case, including the case back are fully machined and finished in the UK, the cases are machined in Dorset and we do the finishing here in Sussex. The laser engraving is done between the two counties in Hampshire. We use Grade 5 Ti-6AL-4V (similar to the Rolex Sea Dweller RLX and the same as Richard Mille), an alloy with 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium. It is an expensive alloy favoured for its hardness and machining capabilities. However, titanium has poor thermal conductivity so heat builds up between the surface of the part and the cutting tool, thus creating a characteristic chatter in the cut as the tool expands and shrinks, so you will also see greater tool wear. We use state-of-the-art 5 axis CNC mills with skilled engineers who work with titanium all day long, especially within the military sector. In short, they know what they are doing and that mitigates the difficulties of working with this metal. So, to see the quality of finish as we do on the Strange Lights is testament to the quality of the case machining and precision.
The Strange Lights brings together the Schofield themes of sea and space. Titanium has so many specialist applications both in marine and space exploration. The International Space Station is estimated to have 22,226 Kg of titanium onboard comprising 7% of its total mass. So, the Strange Lights had to be titanium as soon as the idea took hold. The case back features a romantic look at these notions with the use of a 1950s UFO shining its light/beam on Smeaton's Tower Lighthouse, a strange light that would be! But we also see a star circle, not just showing the passing of time but also a map or a guide. The fact that this design is like a mission patch is no coincidence. SWC SL-1 (indicating that one day they may be more iterations of this watch) is mechanically engraved on the side giving us this ship's identity.
The Strange Lights is a limited watch in two dial colours; Not Quite Green and Not Quite Red, port and starboard lights. In the sky or on the water?

Granite vs. Quartz Countertops for Your Bournemouth Kitchen
Are you planning a kitchen renovation in Bournemouth? A crucial decision lies in choosing between granite benchtops in Christchurch and quartz worktops in Bournemouth. Each material has its own unique features, so let's explore the comparison to help you decide.
Granite Benchtops in Christchurch:
Granite benchtops are made from natural stone, providing a timeless charm to your kitchen. The appeal of granite lies in its distinct patterns and colors, ensuring a one-of-a-kind countertop that adds elegance to your space.
Quartz Worktops in Bournemouth:
On the flip side, quartz worktops are engineered stone countertops crafted from quartz crystals, resins, and pigments. This manufacturing process offers a wide array of colors and patterns, suitable for any kitchen style. Quartz worktops in Bournemouth provide a consistent appearance, making them perfect for modern kitchens.
Pros and Cons:
Granite Benchtops in Christchurch:
Granite is incredibly durable and resistant to heat, scratches, and stains, ideal for busy kitchens. However, it requires periodic sealing to maintain its quality and prevent staining. Additionally, being a natural material, granite may have variations in color and pattern.
Quartz Worktops in Bournemouth:
Quartz countertops are non-porous, highly resistant to stains and bacteria, requiring minimal maintenance as they don't need sealing like granite. However, quartz can be less heat-resistant than granite, so using trivets or hot pads is advisable to protect the surface.
Choosing the Right Material:
When deciding between granite and quartz for your kitchen worktops in Dorset, consider your lifestyle and aesthetic preferences. Granite suits traditional or rustic kitchens, adding warmth and character with its natural beauty. Quartz is ideal for contemporary or minimalist kitchens, offering a sleek and consistent appearance.
Conclusion:
Both granite and quartz countertops have their pros and cons. Granite and marble are timeless choices for those valuing natural beauty and durability, while quartz offers versatility and low maintenance. Ultimately, the choice depends on your taste, budget, and practical needs. Whether you choose granite benchtops in Christchurch or quartz worktops in Bournemouth, both options will enhance the functionality and aesthetics of your kitchen.

Woodchip Barn
Project by, Mohaimeen Islam (Bangladesh), Zachary Mollica (Canada), Sahil Shah (India), Swetha Vegesana (India), Yung-Chen Yang (Taiwan) Studio: Project and Make Studio (Work of M.Arch Thesis) Year: 2015-16 Location: Hooke Park, Dorset, UK
-
vimeo
Tumblr media
Five architects designed and built the Woodchip Barn as students of AA Design & Make MArch 2014/15 programme, for their final group project. Being the students of Design & Make, they used ‘prototyping’ as ‘vehicles’ for design research, developing modes of experimental architectural design that integrated full-scale making. Situated in the unique context of historic English woodland, the course was based at Hooke Park, the AA’s Dorset campus for research in timber and alternative rural architectures. The MArch programme is mainly run by Programme Director Martin Self and Emmanuel Vercruysse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE WOOD CHIP BARN LINK: https://designandmake.aaschool.ac.uk/project/wood-chip-barn/
Design & Make’s 2015/16 project was the robotically fabricated Woodchip Barn at Hooke Park, the AA’s forest campus in Dorset, UK. Following the installation of a woodchip-fuelled biomass boiler on previous year, the students of the AA’s Design & Make 2014/15 programme were tasked with the construction of a bulk woodchip storage barn to allow the campus to be sustainably heated with Hooke Park’s own trees. The ambition of the design was to use found natural junctions/forks in trees – structurally, using 3D scanning as a feedback for the newly acquired robot-arm to fabricate the structure. The final arching structure of the barn is thus formed from forked beech tree components directly sourced from the surrounding woodland.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The initial responsibility was to survey Hooke Park’s beech compartments in teams, to help in preparing a database of potential forked components, from which the structural concept was developed. Based on the criteria of that concept, 25 forks were harvested from the forest, brought back to the campus, and scanned in 3D. An organization script was used to generate a final arrangement of forks in collaboration with engineers from Arup. This digital model was then translated into fabrication information with which Hooke Park’s new robotic arm transformed each fork into a finished component.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 180 sqm Wood Chip Barn is located at Hooke Park’s wood-processing yard. Spanning 25 m x 10 m, the building consists of a concrete slab, timber push-walls and a wooden roof, suspended from that arching vierendeel truss formed by beech tree-forks. The truss, after being preassembled in Hooke Park’s Big Shed [LINK: https://www.dezeen.com/2012/04/25/hooke-park-big-shed-by-piers-taylor-and-aa-unit-19/] and all other components, in the yard, were then erected on site under the guidance of Dorset craftsman Jack Draper who coordinated the fabrication and site operations. To aid a productive workflow upto construction stage, the building task was divided in four components: Floor & Wall, Roof, Truss, and Truss legs – each one/two of the students with responsibility of designing and testing these FOUR PARTS to finally combine them onsite into a whole building.
Tumblr media
In this building the role of the push-wall was quite significant as it had to contain the wood-chip, and provide surfaces to scoop against when extracting chip with a telehandler. The walls had to be essentially cantilevered structures, totally independent of the truss. They had to be fixed on the concrete slab, to account to its self-load and the lateral loads of the chips, and also to carry the vertical load of the roof at its eves. This led to the configuration, where chipping will take place through the clearstory opening on the long elevation and extraction shall occur at the open gable-end; resulting into a geometry of three straight walls. Continuous effort has been given to dissolve the robustness of the linear wall by putting members, e.g. beams and studs on the exterior. Ar. Mohaimeen was involved in preparing complete drawing sets and also fabricating components for the floor, wall, roof and making 1:20 model of the actual truss structure. However, his core responsibility at this stage included designing and testing options for the Floor and the Push-wall by making scale models and mock-ups. To test its visual, tactile, and structural integrity, a series of models at 1:20 scale and a mock-up at 1:2 scale, were made to get feedback from the physical objects. At this point, a plan was made to fabricate the various components of the wall which were then to be assembled on site.
Such experiments provoked a critical understanding of the need and scope for experimentation in the context of Hooke Park for realizing how digital design and fabrication technique can re-invent traditional methods of ‘making’ to create an architecture that is evidence-based, innovative, yet appropriate to context, allowing interaction between client-designer-builder. Developing the precedent set by Hooke Park’s three twentieth-century buildings by architects and engineers including Frei Otto, the Wood Chip Barn explores an alternative vision of 'digital age' wooden building. The construction of the large span arched Vierendeel truss composed of twenty beech forks is presented in 2015-16 year’s project as a full scale materialization of this idea. 3d scanning and robotic technologies has allowed forks from the Hooke Park forest to be harvested to create a structure with minimal processing and without the use of custom fabricated steel components. With the integration of 3-d scanning, robotic-fabrication, and form-finding techniques combined with traditional knowledge, the Wood Chip Barn is an experiment of non-standard architectural production.

Statuario Marble
Statuario marble is, without doubt, the most beautiful Marble available in the World. It is the epitome of style and elegance and has been utilized as a symbol of sophistication and status in interior design for centuries. We are often asked about Statuario marble by engineers, architects, interior designers, luxury builders, and end-users. Statuario marble contains heavy, bold gray veining mixed with thinner patterns. … Application: Statuario marble is an ideal stone for indoor applications such as kitchen countertops and backsplashes, bathroom vanities, and floor tiles.
What is Statuario Marble?
Statuario marble is a striking and exclusive bright white natural marble, its beautiful grey veining, and its rich, bold patterns. It is arguably the most white marble in the marble World. Statuario marble often contains heavy grey veining throughout with unique and beautiful patterns. Statuario marble from the mountain quarries of Statuario, above Carrara in Italy. We are one of the leading manufacturers, suppliers, and Exporter of the Statuario marble all around the world, and its limited availability, coupled with its high demand, make it a real statement in any home, villa, hotel, hospital, and residential or commercial projects.
Best Uses for Statuario Marble

Most of our clients use it for stunning Flooring, Elevation, Decoration and countertops, and backsplashes or as large floor tiles. Luxury bathrooms are equally good uses for Statuario marble as it’s the perfect material for a vanity area or even as eye-catching flooring. It’s equally popular with our hotel clients where it can be used as part of a statement reception area or boardroom, in 5-star hotels and can often be seen in religious buildings such as temples and churches. Statuario marble was the marble of choice for carving lavish statues and was the stone used for Michelangelo’s famous ‘David’ masterpiece.

The intricate veining of our Statuario marble complements the minimalist features in this modern kitchen and Bathroom.
While Italy has always been known as the home of the world’s most beautiful marble, it has some competition these days. As it turns out, some of the most breath-taking, durable marble in the world is right in our back yard—in Vermont!
Vermont may be more recognized for maple syrup and cheese than fine natural stone and historically significant architecture, but the famous Danby Marble Quarry in Vermont’s Dorset Mountain has been producing amazing marble for over 100 years. It was the first marble quarry in the United States and it’s the largest underground marble quarry in the world! Established in the 1850s, the outside of the quarry looks the same today as it did back then. Inside, the quarry twists and turns over a mile-and-a-half deep.
The famous Danby Marble Quarry in Vermont’s Dorset Mountain has been producing amazing marble for over 100 years.
You’re likely wondering what makes Danby Marble so special. Marble is marble, right? Well, that’s not entirely true. Danby Marble is an exceptionally durable marble. It’s a very dense stone that is less likely to stain than other types of marble. Danby Marble has the lowest absorption rate of any kind of marble, ranging between .06 to .08 percent. By comparison, Bianco Carrara’s rate is .13 percent, Statuario is .15 percent and Arabescato Vagli and Calacatta Delicato are .17 percent and .18 percent, respectively. What this means is that Danby Marble is far less likely to absorb stain-causing substances that might cause permanent damage to the stone.
Marble from the Danby Quarry has played an important role in U.S. history, further adding to its appeal. Danby varieties have been used on some of the most famous structures in America such as the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, the United States Supreme Court, and Arlington National Amphitheatre in D.C., as well as the Massachusetts State House in Boston, the Beinecke Library at Yale, the Court of Appeals in Albany, and the Jacob Javits Federal Building exterior landscaping in New York City. Plus, since it’s quarried right here in the United States, purchasing Danby marble helps to support U.S. jobs and the local economy, not to mention the pride that comes with owning such a beautiful stone that’s “Made in the USA.”
The average block size of marble coming from the Carrara.
The most popular marble that comes from the Carrara quarry is Statuario marble. With soft grey and gold veins, it is a beautiful choice for elegant kitchen countertops or showers, vanities, and tub surrounds in the bath. While Statuario marble is most popular, it makes up less than ten percent of all the marble quarried in the mountain. Because so little is quarried, this causes a high demand for Statuario marble.
One of the oldest Statuario marble to come from the quarry is Carrara. White in color with a mix of white and grey in the background, this variety has a long history of use throughout the World. Examples of other varieties of marble from the Carrara quarry include:
Statuario veining with subtle hints of White in the background

What’s so great about Statuario marble?
Statue of David
Sculpted out of Statuario marble between 1501-1504, marble statue by Michelangelo’s “David” is a testament to the longevity of Statuario marble.
Q: We’re shopping for natural stone for our kitchen remodel. We like marble and were told that we “have to” go with Statuario marble. We’re just wondering why. What’s so great about Statuario marble? Is it better than other marble?
A: The most famous marble in the world indeed comes from Italy, specifically the Carrara region. This is where artists such as Michelangelo and Donatello used Statuario marble to create some of the world’s most treasured works of art that have withstood the test of time. Statuario marble is in high demand. It’s beautiful, durable, and brings with it a reputation for luxury. For this reason, many prefer authentic Italian marble.
Statuario marble is considered to be superior by many due to its purity, durability, and beautiful white color. The fact that many buildings, sculptures, and other works of art made centuries ago out of Statuario marble still exist today is considered a testament to its longevity.
Part of the reason for the purity and durability of Statuario marble is the way it was formed. Statuario Marble is crystallized limestone. When limestone a sedimentary rock is met with high temperature and great pressure, large crystals form and bind together to create marble a metamorphic rock. The intense heat destroys most of the impurities once found in the stone. Left behind are large sections of white marble with varied colored veins running through it. The color and boldness of the veins vary with the amount and type of minerals that are present in the limestone. This naturally varies based on the location of the marble, making every marble slab unique.
Another reason that Statuario marble is thought to be superior comes simply from the rich stone working heritage of Italy. They were the first to streamline and perfect quarrying methods still used today. We have set very high standards for quality control and do everything with precision. We are still thought of as some of the most skilled cutters and carvers in the stone world today.
Let’s look at Statuario marble, for example. Since it comes from only one quarry in the world located in Tuscany, it’s in very high demand. This makes the price of Statuario marble higher than other marble types on the market. But be aware that since this marble is rare, it is also often duplicated, without the end-users knowledge.
Sometimes slabs will be cut and tagged as “Statuario” when they may have been quarried in countries like China or Vietnam, then shipped to Italy for cutting and exported to the world for distribution. The term “Carrara marble” should mean that the marble was quarried from Italy’s Carrara region, not just that it was cut there. So, when you’re shopping, be sure you ask a lot of questions to confirm that you’re getting what you’re paying for.
Here at Bhandari Marble World, we have a very large selection of Italian marble in stock. Our experienced team of stone professionals can show you the differences between authentic Italian marble and other choices. And you can rely on us to always be forthcoming and specific about where your marble was quarried.
That being said, there are some other very beautiful marble choices from other areas. For example, did you know that the marble used to build the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. was made from gorgeous white marble quarried in Colorado (Calacatta Lincoln)? So, while the Italian variety is beautiful, strong, and luxurious, it’s not the “only” option. Come visit us at one of our two New England showroom locations and see for yourself which marble you think is perfect for your project
Statuario marble contains the same white and grey hues found in Carrara, with grey veining similar to that which you’ll find in Calacatta slabs. This marble is a very bright white, and it is relatively rare. This makes it one of the pricier and more sought-after marbles available on the market. While Statuario is revered in Italy for being the perfect marble for carving statues, it is also an ideal material for residential and commercial projects. Given its rarity, it is not surprising that Statuario marble is often used as a focal point in any room in which it is featured.
Statuario Extra-Bianco Statuario
Like its Calacatta counterpart, this beautiful white marble variety works well in a large tile format, as well as in the form of countertop slabs or book-matched backsplashes or wall panels. Statuario marble is an ideal stone for indoor applications. Like its Calacatta counterpart, this beautiful white marble variety works well in a large tile format, as well as in the form of kitchen and bathroom countertop slabs or book-matched backsplashes or wall panels. Due to its more porous nature, however, Statuario marble should not be used for exterior applications.
Whether you’re looking for Statuario marble for a residential or commercial application, for flooring, countertops or some other purpose, we’re able to work with our extensive network of partners and suppliers to find the best product based on your desired look and quality
Why Statuario Marble Is the Finest Marble in The World. While marble is quarried in many countries around the world including Greece, USA, India, Spain, Romania, Sweden, and even Germany, there is one country which is generally considered the home of the most high-grade and luxurious marble available – Statuario marble Italy.
Derived from a Greek word that means “to sparkle, flash and gleam,” marble is undoubtedly one of the most luxurious materials in the world. Statuario is the most precious marble varieties found in Italy. It has distinctive veining that can range from gold to grey.
Statuario marble is a most exclusive Italian marble with distinct grey and gold veining throughout and a striking, bold pattern. This marble is considered to be the best white marble. Statuario marble contains heavy, bold grey veining mixed with thinner patterns.
Texture, strength, and durability are the three big factors that make Indian marble the first choice of all. Indian marble suppliers offer a wide variety of quality (level 1-2-3) in all marble slabs, tiles, and countertops for all sorts of residential and commercial purposes. Some buyers prefer to check features of marble being well-polished, crack-resistant, heat resistant, glossy, and shiny look. Taj Mahal in Agra is the biggest example of marble perfection and beauty. The monument is still standing high and lively even after more than 500 years. With the content, readers would know more about why Indian marble has an edge over any other stone, what color impurities give to marble, and what colors are available in India for global buyers.

The following are some of the unique marble colors that occurred due to various impurities in marble.

BARBOUR INTERNATIONAL SESSIONS: JAMES MCVEY
We're excited to announce that we have partnered with musician, James McVey, for a special Summer edition of the Barbour International Sessions. Over the course of the next month, follow along to see James introducing us to three of his favourite emerging acts, as he hosts each of their Sessions, and interviews them for our new Barbour International Youtube channel.
We had a chance to chat with James about being involved, his ties to Barbour International, and why biker inspired style resonates with him and his journey...
You’ve been a loyal follower of the Barbour International brand for years now; what was your first interaction with Barbour International?
I remember going round to a childhood girlfriend’s house after school and her dad would wear always wear a black Barbour jacket. I thought it was the coolest thing ever, but I was too small to fit into one of my own. I worked a weekend job after my GCSE’s and saved up until I could afford my very own tan Steve McQueen Barbour International jacket with the American flag printed inside. It was a dream come true.
After wearing the brand for a number of years, what is it about brand you love so much?
Barbour International screams British heritage to me: it’s classically iconic and is somehow able to portray both style and grit. The jackets are a core essential of my daily life and seem to only get better with age. The quality of Barbour International clothing is apparent from the get go too, something that’s rare in modern day fashion.
How do you relate to our motorcycle heritage?
Growing up in Dorset, I was accustomed to the roar of motorcycles ripping round the country roads on summer weekends. I loved the smell of the petrol and the heat of the engines. There’s something about the freedom of motorcycles that draws me in.
During this campaign, you’re introducing us to some of your favourite upcoming artists, fresh onto the music scene. Did you have a music mentor? Where did your love of music stem from?
I think we all have heroes that we look up to, regardless of our backgrounds or interests. For me it all began with American pop punk, but my passion for music really took a hold when I discovered Irish folk singer Damien Rice. The way he structured his songs fascinated me; they were unfamiliar, daring… like nothing else I’d ever heard before. I’d spend hours trying to learn his songs in my bedroom but what was invaluable was the way he encouraged me to modify simple chords: changing the position of a single finger would result in the slightest of changes. I still use those techniques to this day.
Can you give us any exclusive details on new music you have coming out?
We are hoping to release some new music by the end of the year, but have realised that you can’t force music, so after eight years of albums we are just doing what comes naturally to us. That said, we can’t stop song writing so it’s surely only a matter of time before we release something!
How do you know the artists you’re introducing?
I’m really excited to share the artists and musicians that I’ve selected for you. I feel like they truly represent the unsigned scene in Britain. The beauty of social media is that you are able to discover new music every single day, and that’s how I originally found these guys!
How would you describe their music?
I’m always drawn to something slightly different from the norm. I love how Tors (our first act) combine folk with modern day pop melodies, and how Callum Beattie retains his Scottish accent whilst singing.
What would be your top advice for aspiring musicians?
My main advice would be to not try and emulate other artists: figure out who you are and stick to it. Believe in your song writing and accept your emotions. Honesty is key… if your songs aren’t genuine then people will see through them.
Have you been following the sessions – which has been your favourite in the series so far?
It would have to be Tom Grennan. His voice is crazy. I’ve been lucky enough to meet him several times and I can only say good things about him, he’s such a lovely chap.
What do you think the acts will bring to the sessions?
I can’t wait for these sessions to be seen by the world. I think they’re going to bring real energy, but also emotion. Hopefully you’ll discover a new band or musician that gets you hooked. These acts are the real deal.
What does originality mean to you?
Originality is extremely important, but that doesn’t mean you should shy away from inspiration: we all take elements of things we like and make them our own, and I’m definitely guilty of that. However, it’s about building from your favourite bands and making your own style. Originality is what sets you aside from others.
Who are your originals in the world of music; your biggest inspirations?
I think bands like Mumford & Sons epitomise originality. They took folk and added big sing along pop choruses like nobody else had done before. I love genres merging, so people like Sam Hunt interest me. He’s a country singer who adopts an R&B approach to his writing: the rhythm in his melodies are amazing.
Who are your style originals?
For me James Dean and Steve McQueen are my main style inspirations. I don’t like people who ‘try to hard’: I love a classic approach. Jeans, a nice fitting tshirt and a Barbour International jacket. You can’t go wrong. I also love a good overshirt, or a check, something you can roll the sleeves up on and not afraid to get dirty in. It’s all about being understated, but calmly cool.
Subscribe to the B.Intl Youtube Channel to catch James hosting the Barbour International Sessions and interviewing the first act, Tors, out Tuesday 18th June.

The latest two projects shortlisted for the 2017 RIBA House of the Year are:
The Quest by Strom Architects Newhouse of Auchengree by Ann Nisbet Studio
They join the following four houses on the shortlist, with another one yet to be announced:
Caring Wood by James Macdonald Wright and Niall Maxwell Shawm House by MawsonKerr Architects Ness Point by Tonkin Liu 6 Wood Lane by Birds Portchmouth Russum
The final house to make the shortlist and the winner of the 2017 RIBA House of the Year will be announced on screen during the final episode of Grand Designs: House of the Year (to be broadcast on Tuesday 28 November).
The 2017 RIBA House of the Year is sponsored by Paint & Paper Library.
Architect Magnus Strom created a very simple structural concept for the building.. This is a single-story dwelling for octogenarian clients and their disabled daughter. They wrote a two-page brief which they gave to the architects and said “Get on with it.”
The design has surpassed the aspirations of the client providing flexible deep open plan (8 metres deep) living in a warm and comfortable environment, with a fantastic view out to the south west of their old farmhouse and the surrounding hills.
Extreme purity and intelligence has been at work and the result is an almost effortless sense of space with no split levels. There are solar panels discreetly placed on the roof with underfloor heating throughout the house, except the pantry which is snugly fitted into the rear of the kitchen plan and is a naturally cool space. The house is heated by CH&P and an open log fire in the living area. The chimney stack neatly conceals the exchange unit as well as providing for the open fire, within a simple rectangular design. The floor of the main spaces is locally sourced Purbeck limestone and provides a good thermal mass in the winter and summer months, whilst the glazed facades maximise the natural light.
The house is built over an old quarry that was part of the farmhouse estate owned by the clients. During construction, structural challenges had to be overcome the discovery of a mine shaft that was not known previously known about, but did not deter the clients from executing the design.
The low-lying home sits discreetly on the hillside, which was important given that it is visible from the nearby Durleston Country Park. The trees were kept on the site to ensure the house retained its green backdrop. Magnus’s work displays tenacity and vision, whilst producing a house that has clearly delighted his clients.
