ring! the bell for the third period rang and you were off. making it straight to locker, getting the jersey and straight to the basketball courts. you shouted a quick ‘bye’ to your friends before rushing again.

it was when you arrived that you realised how full all the seats were. at the bottom, near the players, you heard screeches of excited girls cheering on for their favourite players while the top was full with intrigued students who just wanted to escape a mundane lunch break.

you squeezed your way through, finally make it to the entrance of the guys changing room while you felt your heart beat louder every second and just as you were about to knock the door, heeseung opens it to come in eye contact with you.

his hair, fluffy and messy with sweat dripping on the side of his face while his shirt was tightly clinging onto his muscles which you could clearly see through the white fabric— he had probably just finished practice, you thought. flushed, you avoid eye contact and look away only for him to say,

“you’re here? sorry, i didn’t know yet, wait a minute and i’ll show you the way to the seat i saved for you.” the smile on his face never left when he talked to you, which made you smile too.

you responded to him with a small nod and lifted your face up when you noticed he had gone back to the changing room. hand to your face, you felt them heat up from the smallest interaction with him— was this meant to be normal?

however, to distract your mind, you checked the time to realise that the match started in less than five minutes. ‘heeseung is probably taking a while’ you think to yourself before you start heading towards the main courts.

"yn, come i'll lead the way." he spoke from behind you, making you startled.

his tall physique stood next to you as you both walked together, side by side, one more inch closer and both of your hands would have been touching. you stopped yourself from thinking any further after you heard the loud cheers for heeseung's team.

the sight was intimidating for you— you remembered the fact that probably everyone in this hall knew that the two of you were 'dating' and expected something from the both of you. however, before you could tell heeseung about it you felt one of his arms wrap around your torso and lead you to your seat.

it was one of the front row seats were you saw yunjin waiting for you but before heeseung let you sit down, he bent down towards your ear and whispered, "i have a surprise too, if i win this match let's both give our surprises to one and other."

your face turned red at his comment, embarrassed but even more when he winked in you before leaving you with girls screaming at the interaction.

"even they know how cute you guys are, this is a sign yn."

"sign? he only did it to engage the crowd." you denied her words because you didn't want to admit the impact they had on you but before you could talk any further you realised the match had already begun.

the match was intense— it was a tie with only three minutes remaining in the game, heeseung’s team only had to score another hoop and they would've win. everyone anxiously waited for the ball to go into the last hoop before it was game over.

in the background you heard endless screams and chants, while others nervously wondered if their school would win it for them or not but you sat there, arms linked with yunjin, beaming with confidence.

ever since you had started liking heeseung, you dragged your friends to all his basketball matches, whether or not it was a rehearsal or not. you could say that was the start of your infatuation because going to those matches was habitual— you didn't remember the last time you didn't go.

although your friends couldn't care less about how well heeseung played, you had already memorised his each and every step he took and analysed his whole technique before sitting in the seat you were in. the way he dribbled, the way he passed the ball to his teammates, the way he shouted their names all the way down to the way his face would light up every time his team scored a point showcasing his small dimple on his left cheek.

and before you knew it, you heard the loudest cheers and claps from the hall as heeseung's team celebrated while the opposing school had their faces painted with defeat.

"yes!" you quietly screamed to yourself, glad you trusted your gut instincts.

however, lost in a trance, you didn't seem to register the fact that heeseung stood right in front of you, with his jersey in his hand. the girls who were supporting him, squealed louder and the crowd was wilder than ever. embarrassed, you took it from his hand while you shoved the one you got for him to his chest.

"you got me one too?" his doe eyes glistened with curiosity.

"funny enough, that was your surprise." you both erupted into a fit of giggles just when you heard comments about the two of you from behind.

'kiss, kiss, kiss!'

the two of you wore them just how the crowd asked you too but then the words, 'kiss each other' seemingly got louder and louder with every one waiting for your response. heeseung looked into your eyes seemingly waiting for your answer.

deep down, you had made a promise, you knew no kissing was allowed in this fake relationship and you still wanted it, when were you ever going to get a chance like this again? but breaking an oath? you were better than that, so instead of fuelling into your obsessions you were ready to turn them down.

"we can't kiss each other now sorr—"

it was like every thing happened in a flash. you swore one second ago you promised yourself you weren't going to kiss heeseung but his lips moulded against yours and you couldn't help but kiss him back harder.

his hand wrapped around your waist, as he pulled you deeper into his mouth. you vividly remembered the scent of your jersey on him and the taste of energy drinks lingering on his tongue.

"there you go, we kissed, are you all happy now?"

'no i'm the happiest one now, hee' you wished you could tell him right then and there.

“Just want ten minutes, baby,” Heeseung whispers, breath fanning your lips — the same ones that feel naked without the warmth of his lips on it.

Your eyes glaze over from his bambi doe eyes to his plump, slightly swollen lips; and usually you were especially careful not to smudge your lipstick but you can’t seem to hate the colour of your lips on his.

It’s at rushed times like this when you wish you could be in Heeseung’s embrace forever. When you can hear the faint sound of cheering behind the soft, careless whispers of your boyfriend.

“We barely have ten minutes Hee,” you chuckle, hands moving to brush through his freshly dyed locks, “let alone two even.”

“I have to go, Hee,” you mutter, yet your boyfriend can’t seem to let you go, arms still tightly wrapped around your waist, ring cladded fingers dancing across your smooth, exposed skin.

“Go where?” Heeseung hums, and it’s as if he forgets where the both of you really are, like there isn’t a crowd waiting for you to appear on stage, like he isn’t supposed to be in his waiting room.

“Here?” he speaks softly, lips moving to place soft, chaste kisses on the base of your neck. “Or here?” he continues, now moving to the side of your lips.

And Heeseung does everything with such gentleness as tingles shudder through your body; bones melting and nerves seared as you yearn to pull him even closer against you. His trembling fingers and hammering heart as he kisses you fervently brings flocks of butterflies to your stomach.

Just one more kiss, you tell yourself as you indulge in the sweetness of your boyfriend. And you savour how each fleeting kiss feels like it’s ten minutes long, just his lips against yours, close, brushing, sharing air and warmth, ever so achingly careful.

A hard knock on the closed doors is what brings the both of you back to reality. And as your lips part his, Heeseung already starts to miss you — your warmth, your scent, you, and he almost starts wishing that he didn’t have to share you with millions of fans around the world.

“Be back soon?” Heeseung asks, eyes hazy and mind awry like a lost puppy. His fingers gently push against your lips, removing any traces of smudged lipstick.

You hum, “just ten minutes, Hee.”

THE FALL OF NINETEEN-NINETY SIX MARKED A PIVOTAL MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE. Ever since you came into the world, you never really could grasp the concept of love.

You wrapped your head around the myths and tales your mother would read to you every night. You thought that every princess would have her own shining knight in armor. So, after thirteen years of living, where was yours?

Your knight in shining armor, or knights in shining armor, existed within the pages of the comic books you read. You often wondered if they would magically pop out of your books and transport you into their world. Similarly, you wondered whether any of the characters from your adored TV shows would step out and bring you into their lives.

So, it wasn't a surprise when your jaw dropped to the ground as you saw the most beautiful man in your life (well, technically, boy). If the epitome of beauty was a fourteen-year-old boy, it would be Beomgyu.

But it wasn’t just his face that made your thirteen-year-old self swoon over him, it was also the way he acted. You loved the way he conversed, his smooth way of talking at a young age and the way he smiled at you every time he made jokes with his friends. You loved how his eyes lightened every time he’d pull a silly prank.

But the problem was, he never talked to you. You admired him from afar. You never actually had the guts to talk to him, as if. You were content with watching his funny actions from a distance.

There were some moments when you pushed aside your nervousness and talked to him. You remember having butterflies in your stomach the moment you first talked to him. There were times when you both were paired up as project partners for a biology assessment and at that moment, you swore you could’ve worshiped the floor that your biology teacher walked on due to her giving you an opportunity like this.

You knew this was an opportunity to make your move. And you did. You brought him small snacks with little notes on them. Gave him gifts regularly. Maybe even took lessons from your best friend on how to subtly flirt with him. You really thought you had him. Because whenever you used to play out these little acts, you saw the subtle smile on his face. You were so close. It’s like the universe laid it out for you. Gosh, how lucky you were!

Luck. The luck that you thought you had. If luck was a person, you would’ve tackled it to the ground already. Because the day you were about to confess to him was the day he announced his new girlfriend. 

His first girlfriend. You doubt you called it ‘love’ since the only thing she cared about was that he was popular and pretty. That’s it! All that girl could get from Beomgyu was his looks and his reputation. You could’ve scoffed at the sight.

Beomgyu was so much more than that. He was loyal, kind, and trustworthy. And she went for his looks. Even though she had him, you felt as if she was missing out on so much. You were partly sad due to them getting together and also due to Beomgyu getting used to his looks.

So, you were practically prancing when you heard the news of their breakup a month later. Did you care that Beomgyu was absolutely heartbroken? Well, yes, but you felt relieved that Beomgyu was finally unleashed from that mean troll's wrath.

And as he got older, he grew more handsome. And God did you love it. When you entered high school he was a completely different person. He had gotten more flirty and way more pretty. He was way out of your league. 

Out of the years you were in this crappy high school, you made absolutely no improvement in your and Beomgyu’s relationship. Beomgyu, who kept getting new flings every summer and tons of situationships seemed to discard your existence. One could only say ‘What the fuck?’

Your thoughts swirled, and you had a collection of emotions roaming around your head until your best friend jolted you back into reality with a gentle nudge on the shoulder.

“Are you even listening?” Seori’s voice cut through your thoughts, annoyed, since she had to explain what she was talking about in the first place.

“Sorry, what were you saying?” You blinked, focusing your attention on your best friend.

She sighs, “I was saying that I think Doyoung is going to ask me out.” Seori pouts “Why does he not get that I don’t like him that way, jeez.”

Her ramble about her current boy toy washed out in the background. You were once back in your thoughts until you saw him heading into the cafeteria. Beomgyu entered the cafeteria, his smile widening at something his best friend said. 

Lee Heeseung, Beomgyu’s best friend. His ride or die. As long as you can remember, they were attached to the hip. They were basically the package deal. If Beomgyu was the life of the party, Heeseung would hold up his hair while he threw up in the host’s toilet. While Beomgyu was the exact depiction of a social butterfly, Heeseung remained aloof, keeping people at arm’s length. You could only wonder how he dealt with Beomgyu’s outbursting personality.

“Earth to Yn!” Seori snapped her fingers in front of your face which once again, brought you back to reality.

“Sorry.” You sheepishly smiled looking at your best friend's annoyed face. Your friend followed the gaze you had fixed before looking over to her. And her eyes followed the trail of your alleged ‘man’–– Beomgyu.

“Him again.”A sigh erupted from Soeri, having enough of your rambling over your four-year-old crush.

“I’m sorry, alright!” You pouted, your back hunching over the disappointing development between you two which was nowhere to be found. “He’s just so cute, God!”

Your sigh was followed by your best friend. Not long after, your best friend’s fed-up expression converted into a rather eager one.

“I got it!” She exclaimed, her hand hitting your back while she practically screamed. You winced in pain as a few fellow students gave you judgemental stares.

“All you have to do is be close with his best friend, Lee Heeseung.” She slowly said, almost like a mastermind coming up with a villainous plan–well, you would consider your best friend to be some sort of evil criminal.

But this, this opened new angles in your head. It felt like the universe–or more like your best friend–laid it out for you again. Your once unsolvable puzzle showed a new direction, and the missing piece was all in front of you. 

Okay, maybe you felt bad that you were going to use Heeseung like that, even looking forward to it. But, you were really desperate. To the point where you would actually be eager to attend Sunday mass just to ask God for Beomgyu to like you back or even spare one glance at you. Well, what could you do? 

Out of excitement, you pulled Seori in for a hug with a squeal while giving her a kiss on the cheek which she in return, yelped. “Seori, you’re a genius!”

“Yes, I know.” She laughed a bit, escaping your tight grip on her before wiping the spot you kissed her hastily with her hands.

“I mean, how hard could it be?” 

You smiled and your gaze wet up to the boy you loved for most of your life, then slowly to the equally handsome boy.

“did you have fun.” He asked — his eyes filled with so much nerves. “i won’t give you so much credit.” He frowned. “but I had a lot of fun.” You said, lightly punching his shoulder. “you remembered how much I love amusement parks.”

“of course! We used to go all the time after classes.” He said — remembering how you’d drag him whenever you had the chance, riding all the rides you could and eating the food until it was time to go home. “we had so much fun back then.”

You smiled — quickly frowning, it was fun hanging out with heeseung — but you couldn’t help but remembered why you stopped doing those things in the first place. “we did have fun back then didn’t we?”

He saw the change in your mood. “you okay?” you nodded, he kissed the back of his teeth. “it’s been 5 years since we hung out , not 50, I can still tell when you’re upset and lying about it.”

“Why are you doing this?” you said. “doing what?” He questioned. “this ,being nice to me, wanting to go on a date — I mean even as high schoolers you didn’t want to be anything more than friends, now all of a sudden you want to flirt and date me, even after that situation.”

He knew this was gonna come up and he thought he was ready , but he suddenly couldn’t speak. “I want to forgive you, I really do, but I need at least an explanation, is this just a joke between your friends because — it’s not I promise.”

“Then tell me what it is.” You said. “I’ve always liked you yn, even when were in high school.” He said. “I didn’t say anything because I didn’t think you’d like me back , I mean we both what I looked in 9th grade.” You dry laughed. “but then things changed, I didn’t mean for them to, they just got out of hand.”

“you really hurt me heeseung, you were my only friend, I stood by you for everything.” You felt tears welding in your eyes. “and for you to say all those horrible things, and that our friendship meant nothing.” He wrapped his arms around your body. “im sorry.”

It was silent — both of you didn’t say anything as you say on the bench. He finally spoke up. “im so sorry I hurt you.” He whispered into your hair. “I'm so fuckin stupid yn.” He wiped your wet cheeks. “I’ve been waiting for the longest time to tell you that.” He said. “for the past 5 years that’s all I wanted to tell you.”

It felt like a weight had been lifted off both your shoulders. “please forgive me.” He said , squeezing your hand. “I’ll try my best to quit, I swear.” You wanted to believe him — it was only 5 days, but it was longer than you’ve ever seen him in 5 years. “you’d really quit?” you asked. “for you? Of course I would.”

You both began to get cold , so you found your way back to his car — making your way back to your dorm. He parked outside your building, not really wanting to let you out. “I’ll pick you up tomorrow and take you to school.” He said , you nodded. “good night heeseung.”

You undid your seat belt opening the door. “Let’s go baby heeseung.” He laughed. “are you really gonna call it that?” you nodded. “of course , he’s our child.” You said , quickly reaching over to kiss his cheek his eyes widening. “wh-what—” before he fully say something you got out of the car.

“yah! You can’t just run away after doing that.” you turned waving. “goodnight!” you shouted, he watched you go into the building , before driving off a big dopey smile plastered on his face.
