Hemaris diffinis (Snowberry Clearwing). This cute little moth is another species of Sphingidae related to the Hemaris thysbe I posted here the other day. Like H. thysbe, the scales on the wings of this specimen will fly off once it takes its first flight. I noticed a tremendous amount of variation in the scale coverage of this species. Some had almost no scales upon hatching. #hemaris #hemarisdiffinis #sphinxmoth #sphingidae #fresh #newlyeclosed #moth #mothing #entomology #snowberryclearwing #insects_of_our_world #igclub_butterfly

Snowberry Clearwing is native to most of North America and is also known in some regions as Hummingbird Moth or Flying Lobster. Here a couple are mating on Tithonia leaves (they flew off still attached), and also drinking Moldavian Balm nectar. This species mimics the appearance of a bee, which protects it from certain predators afraid of a sting. Its caterpillar is a type of hornworm, but not the kind that prefers tomatoes or tobacco. This one eats honeysuckle, snowberry, and dogbane. #snowberryclearwing #flyinglobster #hummingbirdmoth #hemarisdiffinis #beemimic #knowyourpollinators #insectidentification
