ISSUE SIX IS HERE, FOLKS.

Let’s get ready to CRY.

ISSUE CREDITS: “Home, Family, and Refuge” written by Tom King, art by Bilquis Evely, colors by Matheus Lopes, letters by Clayton Cowles, and edited by Brittany Holzer w/ asst. editor Jillian Grant and senior editor Mike Cotton.

THE PLOT:

So, this issue basically has two stories running side-by-side.

You’ve got the present pursuit and almost-capture of Krem, which results in Kara and Comet’s race to the edge of the universe, and then you have Kara’s Origin Story, as relayed to us by Ruthye.

And what stands out to me, in terms of how this issue is set up/executed, is that it falls perfectly in line with what King has said about his approach to this book in general.

He wanted to kind of ‘strip off the barnacles’ so to speak--remove the excess continuity baggage that has built up on the character over time and just take Kara back to what makes her awesome, what makes her badass.

Each issue has, I think, definitely lived up to that mission statement, but none more so than this one.

There’s more to say but my brain is doing that thing where it wants to touch on SO MANY THINGS that it doesn’t know where to start so let’s just dive in and see how it goes. XD

CINEMATIC STRUCTURE:

Shockingly, this subheading does not refer to the heavy use of horizontal panels in this issue (which is great and I love it and is, indeed, cinematic) but rather the way the art cuts back and forth between the two stories, as well as the caption box style narration throughout.

It feels really filmic. In my opinion, anyway. XD

Take, for instance, the very first page:

There’s no caption to orient us, no, ONE DAY, LONG AGO, ON KRYPTON... or MEANWHILE, BACK ON URRRALANN

It’s not even really set up like a true flashback, as we’re not in Kara’s POV in the current storyline; these two sets of images are just happening, and we kinda roll right along with it, the way you’d just roll with the cuts in a movie.

Additionally, there’s a bit of ‘diegetic’ dialogue in the Krem portions, but otherwise it’s all Ruthye’s narration, a kind of running ‘voiceover.’

And, yeah, it also helps that there’s a WHOLE LOTTA HORIZONTAL PANELS, which mimic the aspect ratio of film, hence the ‘cinematic’ description I keep using.

I checked, and I think three pages out of twenty-two employ vertical or split panels, otherwise the WHOLE DANG BOOK IS HORIZONTAL*, HECK YEAH.

*EXCEPT FOR partial splash pages, and this gorgeous two-page spread:

The color, composition, and sense of scale are exactly the sort of thing you’d see in a Western--big stretches of sky and canyons, and iiiiittty bitty people on horses.

It’s just that, here, of course, the canyons and plains have been swapped out for galaxies and star fields.

Fittingly! The whole Comet sequence reminded me of the scene in True Grit (2010) where Rooster rushes Mattie to a doctor on horseback, in the middle of the night so it’s all just darkness and stars and the two of them on the horse.

The VIBES I tell you.

Also, quick shout-out to Bilquis Evely who has drawn some truly excellent Looks for Kryptonian Kara:

The colors! The hair! The drape of the scarf! It has a few light touches of Byrne in the shape language of the clothing, but otherwise it is a vision of Krypton/Argo that is distinctly and uniquely Evely’s (and Lopes’!) own. I’m so thrilled that it now exists in the visual lexicon of Super Family stuff.

(We’re so spoiled for Krypton content, we’ve got Evely’s take here, and Oeming’s take over in World of Krypton...and actually, now that I think about it, the YA House of El series.)

Also my god the linework in this book. Everything is rendered in Evely’s beautiful, precise lines. The clothing, the hair, the landscape, the technology, the night sky.

I swear, if this creative team doesn’t get an Eisner nom for this, WE RIOT.

KARA-CTERIZATION:

When they first announced that King would be writing this book, my immediate thought was: “Oh my god, what?” and my second thought was: “Oh my god, WHAT???”

But then my third thought was: “Weird choice!”

In hindsight, though, it’s like. INCREDIBLY OBVIOUS, that King would be a decent fit for Kara.

Because his whole thing is taking Silver Age B-listers and running their stories through a more modern storytelling sensibility, as well as a more modern understanding of trauma and mental health.

The result here is a vision of Krypton’s destruction that is immediate and tangible; we see Kara in the rubble, we see her working alongside other Kryptonians as Argo struggles to survive.

I’ve mentioned this in other posts, that my big controversial opinion about this book is that King is not breaking Kara’s characterization to fit a story he wants to tell (which was a big criticism of issue one, back when it was released) but rather, he’s telling the same story that was presented way back in Action Comics 252, just. Updated for 2021. XD

Like, he’s not inventing grim trauma for Kara; her story has always been INCREDIBLY sad! It’s just that, over time, storytelling conventions in comics, as well as the intended demographic for said comics, has changed.

You can see this in action (...ha, ha) when you look at the first issue of Daring New Adventures of Supergirl.

We get that same origin story from Action Comics told to us, but the big difference is Kara’s feelings about it are better articulated and given more depth, because writing in comics matured over time, from 1959 to 1982.

And now that I’ve just made a big to-do about how King isn’t making any changes to Kara’s origin...let’s talk about some changes to Kara’s origin! XD

Mostly, King messes with the timeline. For instance, Kara is older, and witnesses all three waves of Krypton and Argo’s demise, as pointed out in a recent ask I received.

Which is both new, and...kinda not. XD It’s new to the Silver Age origin, wherein Kara is born on Argo after Krypton’s destruction and the first wave of Kryptonite deaths. But it’s not new to Kara’s post-Crisis origin story, which, coincidentally enough, also messed with the timeline!

Post-Crisis Kara was actually the older cousin, who was a pre-teen/teenager at the time of Krypton’s destruction. She would have been an adult on Earth, had she arrived on time, but....

SAY IT WITH ME, FOLKS!

HER POD GOT KNOCKED OFF COURSE.

So what we have here in Woman of Tomorrow is: Post-Crisis Teenager Kara + Silver Age Argo City = MAXIMUM EMOTIONAL DEVASTATION.

Truly, a winning combo. XD

Another change? The death of Alura.

Originally, Alura and Zor-El perished* along with the rest of Argo in the second wave of Kryptonite-poisoning deaths. Here, King shuffles the sequence eeeeever so slightly, so that Alura’s death signals the first wave, and is what prompts the lead shield plan.

(*Except not really because COMICS!)

Anyways I find this an INTRIGUING adjustment.

I always love seeing a writer’s interpretation of Kara’s relationship with Alura and Zor-El.

Because sometimes, Kara is closer to Zor-El, like in the Gates/Igle run; he’s the more emotionally available parent, while Alura is colder and seemingly much more critical of Kara.

Other times, though! Their personalities are swapped; Kara is closer to Alura, while Zor is the standoffish one.

That’s the version we get here; in just this brief interaction, we see that both Alura and Kara are more inclined to open displays of emotion; Alura calls Kara ‘Sweetie’ and Kara is at her mother’s side, begging her to wake up and stay with her, while Zor hangs back.

(Of course, this makes the later reveal, when Kara finds him weeping in his lab, all the more devastating.)

(Also--and this is just a nerdy, personal aside--I like this additive aspect because it retroactively gives Kara’s actions in “Way of the World” a lot more weight from a characterization perspective....But that’s a thirteen-year-old, no-longer-in-continuity story so! XD)

Also Zor being colder is another light Byrne touch, as Byrne was the one who imagined Krypton as an aloof, clinical, suppressed society but fortunately that’s about as far as the Byrne influence extends.

(Byrne is, like so many men in the comics industry, a jerk and a creep, so. You know. The less of him, the better.)

(Also he made some really detrimental changes to Superman in the 80s that continue to plague the character TO THIS DAY but that’s another discussion for another time. XD)

...Though interestingly Byrne also described his approach to his Superman reboot as ‘stripping off barnacles’ but I’d argue that he was deconstructive where King is being additive but ANYWAYS.

Point is: this is the biggest, most distinct change that King makes and I dig it.

(This also makes Rebirth!Zor’s zombie Argonians all the more Ghoulish like dude. What the heck.)

More art? More art:

This is one of the few instances of vertical panel use, to pull that cool trick of moving our eyes across the page to mimic the movement of the action shown.

See also: the arrow from the beginning of the issue.

Again, just gotta point out: Evely serving up a seriously cool LOOK for Kara.

Very Edward Elrich. I dig it.

Also this entire scene shows you that Kara was always Supergirl, even when she didn’t have powers.

(Like the TV show says! You have the heart of a hero.)

She works tirelessly to install the lead shielding, even as her hands bleed and she struggles to stay awake/upright.

Which is beautifully rendered by Evely but ALSO beautifully told by King.

Like. King’s prose is just really lovely. Which is good, because as mentioned, this issue is like. Allll caption boxes. So the prose better be solid. XD

Some of my favorite portions:

“She lived in her world. And she saw it die.”

“She asked him, is there hope? And he said, there is always hope. For you.”

“‘It will carry you,’ he said. ‘We will die. You will live.’ ‘Why me?’ she asked. ‘You are my little girl,’ he said. ‘And I will save you.’”

(Stick a pin in that one...we’re coming back to that quote. XD)

Okay, this one is lengthy, but bear with me, because, you know. It’s great:

“Krypton had held thousands of generations safe in its bosom. Epics were written. Idols were worshipped. Wars were waged. Children were born. Dead were mourned. Heroes were celebrated. Stars were discovered. Histories were researched. Lands were conquered. Families were raised. The edifices of ambition were built and destroyed and built again and destroyed again [...] There was love and jealousy and hope and tears and agony and laughter. There was the view out her window in her room in her apartment. An ancient bowbuck tree with red and blue leaves that fell in the fall and returned in the spring. She watched the wind blow through them, watched them dance each morning. Afterward, she often thought of waking on a chilled Krypton morning, looking out her frosted window as day broke from night, and the roasted, sweet smoke of newly carved hoagmeat rose up to her along with her mother’s impatient call, chiding her for again sleeping past firstprayer. She had visited so many planets, but she never saw anything quite like that view again. Red and blue leaves and the wind blowing through them.”

It just. Strikes the perfect tone for what a Supergirl origin story should be. Beautiful and deeply sad, along with a glimmer of hope.

BUT WHERE IS THAT HOPE, YOU ASK?

Let’s jump ahead to the last page:

(HNNNNNG THE COLORSSSSSS AND THE LIIIIIINESSS!!!)

(Okay back to the words. XD)

The text is probably a little tough to see so I’ll quote it here:

“And every day she kept on walking. ‘Be good’ her mother had said. ‘There is always hope,’ her father had said. But I do not believe that is what drives her inevitably forward. No, like many whose childhoods are ripped away from them, she is eternally searching for something. Perhaps justice. Perhaps explanation. Perhaps... Perhaps a tree outside her window, red and blue leaves and the wind that blows between them.”

I love this as an explanation as to why Kara is so often depicted as somewhat aimless in the comics.

So many writers couch a lot of Kara’s issues in the fact that she’s ‘Superman’s cousin.’

Which, you know. Was a valid take, once upon a time!

But man, it is so stale these days, to the point where it kinda feels regressive and reductive.

Here, King’s saying, ‘She’s not wandering around the universe with identity issues because of Clark...she’s searching for something that can’t quite ever truly be replicated.’

So rather than center Kara’s core issue on Superman angst, it instead centers it on things like, you know. Abandonment, and being bi-cultural, and the trauma she’s experienced as a survivor and refugee of a planetary climate disaster.

(*whispering quietly* aspects of Kara’s characterization that comics didn’t develop until after the TV show had aaaaiiirrred)

(The TV show has been a net positive for Kara’s character. FIGHT ME, FANDOM.)

King goes even further with removing Clark as Kara’s central angst in that!

There is no mention of him when Kara leaves Argo.

There is mention of Jor-El’s rocket designs, but Kara being sent to Earth is framed entirely as Zor-El’s attempt to save his daughter, as opposed to like. Going to join Kal/look after him.

Heck, I don’t think Zor-El and Kara even knew about Kal.

(Which is kiiinda in line with Action Comics 252! Originally, Zor-El and Alura chose Earth as Kara’s destination after seeing Superman on their space telescope, but they had no clue who he was. Kara only discovered Clark was her cousin after she arrived on Earth.)

Anyways.

THIS IS JUST. GOOD STUFF.

ALSO there’s a little bit in here where Ruthye says that Kara became withdrawn because she was tired of making friends, as they all inevitably died.

Which, 1.) God, THE LAYERS OF TRAGEDY JUST KEEP GOING, LIKE A TERRIBLE, TRAUMATIZING ONION, and 2.) a great way to explain why Kara doesn’t have a consistent cast of supporting characters/friends/etc.

(I mean, I would like for DC to change that but. Again. This retroactively makes past stories better by being additive, rather that deconstructive.)

Oh, right! Said I’d come back to that quote from Zor.

Okay, so. The quote goeth thusly:

“‘You are my little girl,’ he said. ‘And I will save you.’ ‘No,’ she said. ‘What I have seen...how can I still be a little girl?’ ‘Tomorrow will come soon enough,’ he said. ‘And I will pass and this place will pass and stars will fall and suns will rise. And you will be a woman looking back on the many decades of your life, the terrors and the triumphs. And perhaps you will think of your father then and perhaps you will remember whatever has happened, whatever pain you have ever endured...you are still my little girl.’“

This is another instance of like. Unintentional, additive layers of characterization.

(I keep saying ‘unintentional’ because I don’t like to presume author intent; it’s entirely possible it is intentional, but I like to have proof. XD)

Anyways, there’s always a lot of talk about like. Why does a grown woman allow herself to be called Supergirl, you don’t see that with male characters, etc. etc.

(There is a whole separate conversation here about the way society perceives women/girls as well as how pop culture and in particular! Comics! have historically portrayed them but it would be A Lot, so I’m not going to get into all of that, but!)

Basically I can buy that Kara, robbed of a childhood on Krypton and then presented with a young adulthood on earth where she gets to be Supergirl, unburdened by the trauma she experienced, would absolutely be okay with that name, and not necessarily in a rush to toss it out.

But Zor’s line also points to her future which is very much the Woman of Tomorrow.

(’Man of Tomorrow/Woman of Tomorrow’ are awesome descriptors and I absolutely think the Super Family of characters should make use of those titles more, They’re absolutely RAD.)

Speaking of Woman of Tomorrow...

WOMAN OF TOMORROW:

I’ve gone on about how the characterization stuff in this book speaks to/enhances Supergirl stories that have come before it, but how does this issue square with this book specifically? How does this issue work within the world of Woman of Tomorrow?

Well, it functions as one giant explanation for all of the characterization that has come before this.

Which is basically what this series has been doing the whole time; each new issue gives us a little more insight on what came before; I’m mostly thinking of how Kara dealt with that one alien in issue four--she was really verbally rough with her, but not because she was being mean, she just needed to behave that way in order to help her. Which in turn supports the characterization of Kara in issue two, where she’s really harsh with the bus passengers, but BECAUSE of what we see in issue four, we realize, ‘oh, she wasn’t being malicious, she was just trying to get the job done.’

So issue six!

Absolutely explains why Kara wandered off on her twenty-first birthday to drink away her sorrows. XD

Like. AGAIN, King has imagined Kara as a woman of great restraint, so the reveal that she has been carrying around this amount of baggage the entire time but waited until she was legally able to consume alcohol by United States Earth standards before getting drunk to momentarily FORGET is simply WILD and speaks to a level of moral fortitude that I think a bunch of people just dismissed at the outset because, ‘ew, gross, swearing and drinking!’

Like, bruh:

TWIST THE KNIFE HARDER, KING, IT’S NOT LIKE I NEEDED MY HEART OR WHATEVER. XD

Another fun (by which I mean, emotionally devastating) bit:

Alright, last one:

The above is a really good example of Woman of Tomorrow ‘leaning towards the light,’ as King would say; while his new ‘era’ of titles have darkness in them, they ultimately point towards a brighter, more optimistic tone.

Kara’s initial grim, bloody meeting with Krem is deliberately echoed here in the art, but now she’s perfectly in control of the situation, she has the upper hand, she’s ready to KICK SOME BUTT. XD

And speaking of the art echoing prior issues!

That’s one of the (many) benefits of this thing being a single, self-contained limited series, as opposed to a traditional ongoing.

King had the opportunity to write this entire book before Evely started working on the art, so once she did get started, she had access to the whole thing. Beginning, middle, and end.

Which basically means that the artists can just plan better--that’s not always an option, especially if there are fill-in writers/artists.

SPEAKING of the artists...

NO THOUGHTS, HEAD EMPTY, JUST AAARRRRRRRTTTT!!!!!

Listen it’s poor form in art criticism to simply say, ‘I like it!’ but sometimes you just gotta say...

I LIKE IT:

This reminds me of a Legion of Superheroes storyline where Andromeda, the Not-Supergirl character, found some kind of anomaly at the end of the universe, and the art/colors was trippy, like this.

(Also, the next page, which is all grayscale and Kara and Comet confronting the Mordru globe, is also great, and has such a cool Supergirl moment.)

This is my favorite page. Like, there’s just something about smol Kara, framed against the enormity of a red sky as meteors fall like rain. BEAUTIFUL AND TRAGIC, WHICH IS LIKE. KARA’S ENTIRE DEAL, NOW. WITH THIS BOOK.

I *highly* recommend finding the saddest score and/or songs that remind you of Kara, and reading the book along to it.

Just. Really adds to the emotional gut punch overall. XD

Personally, I’ve been impatiently eagerly awaiting the release of Mamoru Hosoda’s Belle here in the states, and as such, I’ve had the OST on repeat--”Memories of a Sound” is good, if you want some sad, vaguely space-y music to listen to for this.

(But also I am very bad at making like. Playlists and such for characters, so. There are probably better options out there.)

LET’S TALK LETTERING:

Lettering truly is the Final Frontier, in terms of my ongoing quest to appreciate every corner of comics production. XD

What I have recently learned is that good lettering should work in harmony with the art and guide the eye across the panels in such a way that the reader is never confused as to the sequence of images/words.

The letterer essentially takes you by the hand and says: Here, go this way.

(Or, editor? I’m still a little confused by who places captions/balloons etc, but for the purposes of this post, I’m just going to assume that task falls to Clayton Cowles.)

A recent instance of wonky lettering that stands out is in Nightwing #87--artistically that issue is KILLER, and the lettering mostly really works along with the ambitious art conceit of telling a comic in one long, continuous image.

But there’s a point where the lettering splits and briefly confuses the reader as to the sequence of events/what you should be looking at.

It’s not bad, but it does sort of highlight how easy it is for the lettering to potentially lead the reader astray!

All of this rambling to basically say that the lettering in Woman of Tomorrow? continues to be top notch.

I’m gonna bring back that double page spread:

There are several excellent things happening here.

1.) This is going to sound like an insult to the letters but I promise it isn’t: Cowles knows when to get out of the way, and let the art take center stage.

The caption boxes ride the sides of the image, allowing the bulk of the page space to go to Evely and Lopes’ beautiful image of Kara and Comet taking flight.

2.) We’re effortlessly guided right to that bottom left image, where the trail of the Mordru Globe takes over for the caption boxes, pointing us back up to the other side of the page, where once again, the lettering takes our figurative hand and moves us towards the bottom of the page, ready to turn it once we’re finished reading.

It seems really simple and straightforward but I PROMISE YOU, a lesser letterer would’ve planted some caption boxes along that strong, central diagonal.

ANOTHER NEAT THING, is that the art and letters are now Doing the Thing where it’s moving your eye in tandem with the action--we read down the page along side the sunset, lending a sense of movement to a static image. The sun can’t really sink down below the horizon, but that’s the way our eye is moving, with both the words AND colors.

~THE ILLUSION OF MOOOOOVEMENT~

None of this is revolutionary but you’d be surprised how often details like this get left to the wayside in comics; comics are art but they are also beholden to deadlines, so it’s just really lovely to see every member of the creative team working in synch, delivering such a well-realized vision.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Not much Ruthye content this time! But I suspect that she’ll be front and center soon enough, as the CAPTURE OF KREM IS IMMINENT.

There is nothing in this issue to suggest that Comet is a creep but also THERE’S NOTHING TO DENY IT, EITHER. XD

Oh, actually, speaking of Comet!

I love that Kara says ‘please’ here, when talking to Comet.

It’s a little thing, and a very well-worn tactic, but. You wanna show that your character is a good person? Make sure they are kind to children and animals.

I generally try to avoid looking at how the fandom is responding to this book--I kinda want to consume it in isolation/on my own terms, so that I’m not swayed, one way or another, by the opinions of others.

...That said I am thrilled to see this comic making so many ‘Best of 2021′ lists.

And I think it should be noted: there has not been a single ‘bad’ issue thus far.

Which is actually...pretty darn remarkable, for a monthly title!

Like, every review is essentially: “This is the best issue yet, which is saying something, because they’ve all been good.”

I’m entirely biased, but I really do think this is one of King’s better books. It’s focused and tightly plotted, and the art sings every. Dang. Time.

(Also no fill-in artists wooooooo!)

(We can probably thank King for that, as he’s a big champion of, ‘let the artist have time, the book will suffer if you rush out the art.’)

Anyways, I’m just glad that the book is getting some much-deserved recognition.

Like, even Comicsbeat had some kind words for the book!

Truly amazing, since I know at least one of the reviewers over there hates King, so. XD

We have just two issues left for this book, and while I absolutely wanna read ‘em RIGHT NOW, I also don’t want this title to end!

Because then we go right back to wondering if Kara will ever show up in comics again. XD

Oof.

Let King write a sequel, maybe?

Can’t wait for various corners of fandom to make it all about them/their ships, as opposed to, you know, assuming he’s talking about the art.

NEXT TIME! KREM, CAPTURED?!?! WILL RUTHYE GET HER REVENGE?? WILL WE EVER KNOW IF COMET IS HALF-HORSE-MAN??!?! We’ll have to wait and see!

Planning: Oh, this one is almost a year old, let’s see if I can recall. I was in the midst of Yi City pain, that’s for sure. And, like so often I was inspired by a poem/song, this time I was listening to “Hate me” by Eurielle, one of the most fitting songs for this disaster. I wanted to make some kind of puzzle, and there are two pics of XXC because he’s the link between the two others.

Editing: I didn’t keep the original pictures, so no before-after, and I used Photoscape, that’s why the font looks so blurry :/. Black and White seemed the best choice for this (we all know the lovely colours of Yi City Arc :))). It was a bit of a pain to get the frames in a way that the black bands over XY’s and SL’s eyes on the same level as XXC’s blindfold as a symbol for everyone’s self-centred behaviour/view/because they are (more or less) dead. XY’s pic had to be the first because he affects all of them the most.

Hm, what else can I say? The text speaks for itself, I think ... “Hate me” for Xue Yang because literally for what he’d done and also because he wanted XXC to hate him after he couldn’t love him anymore. “Play me” for XXC because, well, you know. XD “Use me” for XXC because he also was willing to be used by both XY for not being lonely and by SL as a scapegoat for what XY did to his people and bc he felt guilty of it. “Break me” for SL, diametral to XY because he literally broke him and next to/beneath XXC because a) for his leaving (and giving him his eyes) and b) well, killing himself, hence the red line at XXC’s throat (*cough*). The caption says “love me” - it’s a songxuexiao edit after all XD and “save me” because they are hopeful fools.

Probably not all that active: he did post his "love this moment", but he didn't initiate contact with Fiat during his time away.

There are a few possible headcanons. One is he's not fond of phone calls [mood], including video calls [less mood, but "just calling to chat" does feel very awkward - I have scheduled video calls with my friend and family XD]

That would also fit with Fiat asking if he’d finished talking to him mum already. (I.e. it wasn‘t a long call.)

It’s a bit long so all under the cut!

1. Are there any other artists that inspire(d) you?

Yes!! Aside from all my wonderful friends and followers on here and Instagram who inspire me to keep working, there is a few stand-outs that have directly influenced the way I draw.

Kawanocy has been a huge influence on my art since 2017! He always served as kind of an end goal of what I want the colouring for my art to be like. I hope one day I will love my art as I love his!!

But this is the one picture kickstarted my whole artistic journey back in late 2016!

This is a picture from Pokémon Sun and Moon, given to you at the end credits of the game. (Spoilers for the game ahead)

I won’t bore anyone with the details but I found the character progression of the girl (Lillie) really touching and inspirational. You get this photo after she leaves for Kanto to improve her battling skills!

It (suffice it to say) broke 12-year-old Freya’s heart. The caption that came with the picture read:

“Everyone’s smiles shine so brightly. Those smiles led us to so many other people. And those meetings will lead us to a bright future. I’m so glad I got to meet everyone. I’m so glad I got to meet you.”

It never failed to make me tear up, so I wanted to get really good at art so one day I could draw the picture like I always imagined it in my head.

So, here are a few attempts I had back in 2017!

I had made 4 attempts in 7 months: but I haven’t done any since. I’ve been planning on redrawing it recently, though!

2. What type of artstyle (besides yours) is your favourite?

Ahh great question! This one is really hard, but I’m going to go with the artstyle from two shows that I like!

Violet Evergarden (top) is an incredibly animated show. Stunning story, stunning art, it’s really good.

Second up is the Dragon Ball style. Even though there notable stylistic differences between DBZ (left) and DBS (right), they still give me the wave of nostalgia from my childhood I adore so much. Perhaps I don’t like them as much aesthetically, but I like the way the style makes me feel. And loot at little Scratch the Cat in Future Trunks’ shoulder!! So cute <<<333

3. What are some foods that Byakuya and your S/I enjoy?

Ah I really love this question!! I’m surprised I didn’t give it too much thought before this.

S/I’s favourite food is definitely Spaghetti Bolognese. I had it for lunch yesterday actually, and it was delicious!!

Byakuya seems to be picky with his food. I can’t remember exactly what he says in THH, but I do remember him saying he doesn’t tend to like things that aren’t gourmet. And microwaveable foods ARE OFF THE TABLE.

I would think he likes French cuisine though, no idea why I think that, he just comes off to me as a French cuisine man, ahaha.

Also, in terms of snacking foods: brie cheese and red grapes with salt and vinegar crackers. It’s nice enough that he would like it, and S/I really loves it too!! And in that case, it’s pretty much his go-to for afternoon snacks since it seems to make her happy and he is rather fond of it himself.

4. How would you describe your S/I’s clothing style?

I would say she likes to lean towards semi-formal clothes to wear out (I mean her main outfit is in this style).

She specifically wears reds and blacks the majority of the time, but she also occasionally wears black and blue, brown/white with black, or just a white sundress. When she’s roaming around the house her wear is a lot more cosy. In Winter, she wears a wine red oversized sweater with her regular, black, over-the-knee socks. In Summer: it’s just a red dress.

She does have a few variations of dresses and skirts she likes to wear. Byakuya tends to buy her a lot of clothes (and just stuff in general), with the knowledge it’ll make her happy. He is well aware is far from the most affectionate of partners, although he truly tries his best for her — hence, he overcompensates with the amount of gifts he gives and care for her he exhibits.

I like how you do OCs. So many fanfictions make them overpowered and without flaws. But your ones come off more natural, half of them aren't even martial badasses but just regular people getting by. Like Kino, or Shouji. If I recall, Rui Shi was once some nameless caption before you developed him. Hina is, haha, yeah, a bitch, lol. Is it just me or would Ozai's assassin and Toph make a great comedy duo? The blind girl and the invisible man. Even Xin Long has personality. My fav is still Rui Shi.

Well, like I always say, Shoji isn’t an OC :’D he’s another repurposed one-time canon character who got a much bigger role in Gladiator than in ATLA, just like Song. This is him! It’s possible that it will become more obvious that he’s a canon-based character in chapter 201, but even if it’s not that obvious, now you know the truth!

Either way, I’m glad you like my OCs! Rui Shi is one of the best of them, without a doubt, so I take pride in knowing he’s your favorite. I guess there are many secrets to making OCs for fanfiction, because chances are you will need OCs in a long-term story like my own… but when I started out with the story, I always kept them at a minimum both because I wanted to use as many canon characters as I could (hence, Shoji), and because I knew of the stigma that surounds fanfiction OCs. There’s people who do like reading about OCs… but the majority of the readers will open a fic out of interest in the canon characters they already know and love. If your story isn’t outright about OCs, you risk alienating readers by introducing characters who could feel out of place in the setting (and that, I think, is what bothers you with OCs who are overpowered and flawless).

Admittedly, it may sound like I’m talking out of my ass because of characters like Rhone and Seethus, who probably do fall into the overpowered OC cliches… but uh, small secret: they’re not exactly my creations. They were a suggestion by a friend, one of Gladiator’s staunchest supporters from its very inception (being upfront, Gladiator wouldn’t even exist without him), and I did my best to accommodate them into the story despite there were some things in his original ideas for the characters that would have been quite difficult to work with. Seethus seems to have been received much better than Rhone, which is a relief for me, but the truth is that neither of them are 100% mine and they follow entirely different character-building principles because of that.

Outside of those two, though, the other OCs we have generally obey the need for these characters to exist in this world and setting: when it comes to the soldiers in the Fire Nation army, the show portrayed them as real people by the last season but I wanted to flesh out some of them further than that, beyond showing they can be nice to prisoners (Iroh’s friendly prison guard) or playful with each other (the ones from the Boiling Rock). That’s where Rui Shi came from, the most exasperated and tortured Royal Guard in the history of the position. Part of Rui Shi’s success, I think, comes from him being 100% loyal to Azula despite being 100% exasperated by her antics just as well :’D he’s a cool guy, but all he ever wanted was to protect a Princess who refuses to be protected and who seems to make a sport out of making his job more and more difficult xD which results in his constant clashes with her and his little patience for the ridiculous crap she gets up to more often than not. He serves as a counterweight, I think, to all the characters who are starstruck by Azula and Sokka: he’s a grounding character, helps us see these two are a pair of reckless dorks in love who need to get reeled back into their best behavior once in a while.

And then there’s Kino, who basically breathed life into the South Pole and created much more fun dynamics with those characters than everything that had preceded him. Kino was a REALLY lucky hit, a completely random night-time idea that came to me when I was about to go to bed… and when I woke up the next morning I couldn’t remember him anymore :’D it took a while for me to remember what that damn great idea had been… I was so glad when he returned to me, honestly xD Kino is a lot of fun, and as comedic a character as he may appear, that comedy is what makes him an individual rather than just another soldier. The idea of him being largely ignored by his fellow soldiers and commanding officers started off as a funny way to ensure he could hang out with Katara and Aang without trouble… but in Part 3 that will result in a pretty useful skill that everyone shall cherish him more for. He’s a counterweight to main characters too, in a sense, but in the opposite way Rui Shi is: he lightens up the generally serious and heavy South Pole chapters and embodies the common, ordinary Fire Nation citizen who has been indoctrinated since youth but who can find a new path for himself, learn better, cherish new ways of living once he’s removed from that very toxic environment.

I could talk for ages about the OCs in the story: Xin Long being so feisty, for instance, comes from my need to give him a visible personality, reminiscent of Azula’s own, just like Appa and Momo had in canon. Otherwise he’d feel like a mere object to be ridden back and forth between places and nothing more… which would be really demeaning for a proud creature like that, huh? :’D But I think you’ll get bored of reading too much of my OC theory, because I’ve thought about this stuff a lot xD Still, I’d like to add that there may be some characters who feel a little more complex, who may have more substance to them than initially obvious…

… And it’s because they do have more of it: I had an original story before Gladiator, pretty dense and huge story, and I’ve littered Gladiator with cameos of those OCs EVERYWHERE, it’s just not something anyone can tell because that story was never published (and never will be x’D). So… remember the Priestess of the Flames, from the Dragon’s Pit? She’s one of my favorite characters from that story xD some of her defining traits in Gladiator are outright taken from her original iteration (if you don’t remember her, no worries, you’ll see her again in the upcoming Slave Riot arc and I suspect she’ll make more of an impression there). Your Doom, his sponsor, the Ruthless Hero, the Dark Rook, Scoundrel and his sponsor too… they’re all crossovering OCs who got small roles in Gladiator xD in general, these repurposed characters have always been background or secondary characters (the ranking is FULL of these OCs, even if they might never get speaking roles, because that way I could fill up the ranks a little faster :’D), but that they already have established personalities allowed me to work easily with the ones who do have a starring role in the story, without needing to spend more time than I could afford fleshing them out so they felt believable.

I guess that really should be my final point: the OCs have to feel believable. If it looks like they have a life beyond interacting with the main cast, I don’t need to devote too much time to developing them unless strictly necessary (as was the case with Yang and Haiyan, as a quick example). OCs are, ultimately, characters: they have flaws, they have personality, they have a history just as everyone you walk past in the street does, even if you can’t fathom what it might be. As much as the world absolutely revolves around Azula and Sokka in Gladiator, each ordinary individual’s world doesn’t revolve around them. These two are as good as celebrities to admire, leaders to look up to, obstacles to overcome or nuisances to deal with… but they’re not the center of everything for the average citizen, as things stand. They’re not the only thing on their minds. Each OC has their own struggles, their own pursuits, some more mundane than others, just like every canon character does. It’s easy to think of characters, especially OCs, through a very simplistic “helpers” and “foils” filter… but real people are a lot more complicated than that, and so are they :’)

1/2 I don’t think you hate Stiles tbh. You never bashed him, nor described/referred to him using extremely offensive, ableist terms or slurs (unlike other so-called Scott fans), so I don’t get why anyone would accuse you of such a thing. I believe that the “anon” who commissioned you that gifset years ago was clearly biased towards Stiles and wanted to dehumanize Stiles and paint him as some sort of monster in order to prop Scott up and make Scott look better at the expense of a

2/2 canonical neurodivergent character they obviously hate though. The fact that the people who are currently reblogging that gifset even though you explicitly asked them to stop are the very same biased persons who have the disgusting habit of bashing Stiles and using extremely offensive, ableist slurs and terms to describe him in a attempt to prop Scott up at the expense of everyone else doesn’t really help either first of all thank you. i definitely do not hate stiles considering i have made (probably close to) thousands of gifs of him in the last few years. i do absolutely love scott. i also love stiles. hence: i love sciles. it’s not that complicated XD as far as i know i haven’t done any stiles bashing (tho i won’t say never because there was a vERY rough rough patch there for awhile), especially not recently, and i would never use slurs (??like??hhwhat??) in regards to his issues or to “prop up” another character like scott. that just doesn’t make any sense to me because currently i live in a carefully constructed world where they are and have always been and will always be two dorky best friends in love, and nothing after episode 5x2 ever even happened. if nonny knew anything about anything they would not be sending me those messages. as for the person who requested the gifset, they absolutely were (clearly) furious with stiles, but honestly i’m not gonna bash them either. every scene i used for that set was canon (obviously), and i believe i left it up to the viewers’ interpretation with the little poem i put in the caption. it wasn’t even meant to call stiles inhuman, it was kinda just a call out to his dehumanizing language toward scott during the breakup in 5x9 (nobody better come talk to me about this shit i’m serious it’s almost shabbat its not the right energy). anyway i was also going through a rollercoaster of angst for a couple of years before i locked it all away in a box in my brain and blacklist to survive, so i don’t blame people if they interpret the post as they will. it was a hell of a time. lastly thank you for bringing up the fact that i had literally JUST made a post not one minute before that asking people to stop reblogging that set because it was triggering me and i needed to stop seeing it in my notes. nonny is being superfoolish today and i just don’t give no shits anymore.

In an article I read recently by Peter Hessler for the New Yorker, the journalist explained how he was learning Arabic in Cairo. The article opened up a lot to me, about the history of Arabic vs the Quran, the books and articles debating the point that I”m bringing up which is Arabic being lost?

Now I can easily say, that it would be ideal and very convenient if my second country learns my mother tongue so it will save me any trouble in learning Arabic or writing a different dialect.

Orientalist is a word that I wasn’t aquatinted with before.

As designers, developers in the Arab region, you have the upper hand and the power to make Arabic more accessible,

Maybe older Adobe products (which fun fact that I found out in this article is that Adobe is from the Ancient Egyptian language) didn’t compute Arabic. But they are starting to. And type design is on the rise. (check out my article/interview with Gaber)

So, it’s now everyone’s knowledge that uri Yeolri is real. Yup, it’s not a dream guys, it’s reality. I know, it’s very shocking at first, but as usual Dispatch gave us the leads and who can ever fight Dispatch when it comes to a dating rumor, right?

Alright, so getting into a little bit of a background information first: Lovestagram (love instagram) is a term used to describe ‘flirting’ or ‘hinting’ a relationship between a celebrity and another, but the nature of this activity is usually very discreet.

I SENT AN ASK TO @breastforce A WEEK AGO, HOPING IT WOULD GAIN TRACTION WHILE I DIDN’T HAVE THE ENERGY TO POST MY WANTS AND NEED FOR (more) WHEELCHAIR USER REPRESENTATION IN THIS SHOW AND FANDOM AND HOW I REALIZED ECLIPSA WOULD BE THE PERFECT CANDIDATE FOR IT, I WAS ORIGINALLY GOING TO TAG @breastforce, @marcodiazisatransgirl and @starbutterflyisautistic in my post addressing it to help spread the idea and gain more traction,since I love their ideas and representation they’ve created for themselves within the fandom and this has nothing to to do with anything but like, after ‘Girls Day Out’ I just got really pissed, for all the love these random side characters get, that nobody in general was drawing or even talking about Toby, or how Star vs. The Forces of Evil was the first children’s cartoon in an entire decade to, not only have a wheelchair user in their storyline, but also be the only wheelchair user on a children’s cartoon in an entire decade have their wheelchair users storyline not revolve around educating abled bodied people. While also having that character be BLACK. #DisabilityTooWhite (even in cartoons)

So before I publish this, I just wanna add in the few things I forgot do to tiredness.

ECLIPSA IS STILL TOTALLY GOING TO NEED HER CHAIR ONCE SHE GETS UN-CRYSTALIZED. THE WHOLE ENTIRE REASON SHE’S LIKE THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE IS BECAUSE THE TIME OUT GUY, BEING THE JUDGEMENTAL PRICK THAT HE IS, THOUGHT THAT SHE WAS “EVIL” NOT BECAUSE SHE’S THE QUEEN OF DARKNESS, BUT BECAUSE FROM HIS POINT OF VIEW, SHE WAS “FAKING HER DISABILITY” BECAUSE HE SAW HER GET UP ON HER OWN FOR 5 SECONDS AND TOOK THAT AS AN INSULT TO LEKMET, FREEZING HER ONLY TO AVENGE THE GOATS HONOR. NATURALLY, HER LOVER TURNED SIGNIFICANT OTHER WASN’T TOO HAPPY ABOUT THIS AND CAUGHT ON TO WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED PRETTY QUICK, SO TIME OUT GUY AND LEKMET USED HER TITLE AND ALL THIER “PAST CRIMES” AS A SCAPEGOAT TO KEEP HER THERE, RATHER THAN UN-FREEZE HER AND FACE THE MUSIC.

AND AGAIN, I’M NOT TRYING TO OFFEND ANYBODY BECAUSE I KNOW SHE’S PEOPLES DAUGHTER AND TOBY IS MY SON TOO BUT LIKE, IF STAR VS. WERE ONE OF THOSE CARTOONS THAT TRIED TO DO EPISODES ON HOW PEOPLE IN WHEELCHAIRS ARE “JUST LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE” (THANK GOD THEY’RE NOT .... AT LEAST NOT /YET/) MARGO DIAZ WOULD TOTALLY BE THAT ONE OVER PROTECTIVE ASSHOLE WHO TALKS IN A WEIRD BABY VOICE AND SAYS THINGS LIKE “MAYBE YOU SHOULD SIT THIS ONE OUT....” AND “IT’S FOR YOUR OWN SAFTY...” AND STAR WOULD (PROBABLY) BE THE ONE TELLING HER TO CHILL AND ACTUALLY TREATING THE WHEELCHAIR USER LIKE A PERSON ...

LIKE WHEN ECLIPSA GET’S UN-CRYSTALIZED, SHE IMMEDIATELY FALLS TO THE GROUND LIKE “IT’S OKAY! KITTY CAT OFFENSE GOT ME COVERED!” AND THEN MARGO’S LIKE “AAAH! STAR! YOUR GRANDMA’S FALLEN AND SHE CAN’T GET UP!”

“BUT SHE LANDED ON HER PAL-”

“SOMEBODY CALL ALIVE ALERT!!!!”

“OH, DON’T WORRY PRECIOUS, I ALREADY HAVE SOMEONE WHO’S ON ALERT FOR /MY LIFE/” *PRESSES THE LIL, CRESCENT MOON PENDANT ON HER CREST AND IT STARTS GLOWING* NEXT THING YOU KNOW SHE’S ROLLED OVER ON THE FLOOR....

“AWH WHA-?” *STAR GRAPS AT HER HOODIE* “MARGO! WE NEED TO GET HER OUTTA’ HERE! SHE CAN’T WALK OR USE MAGIC, AND ALL MY SPELLS ARE AFRAID OF HER! YOU NEED TO GET YOUR DAD!” AND MARGO GET’S OUT HER DS LIKE “OKAY!” AND ONCE SHE’S OUT OF EARSHOT, ECLIPSA SAYS TO STAR IN HER PERFECT COCKNEY ACCENT LIKE “AWWHH, WOTS’A MATTA’, CAKEPOP?! YOU DON’ WONNA STAY’ ER’ AN’ WAIT WIT’ GRANNY TA’ MEET YER’ POPPOP?!

AND STAR’S ALL ANNOYED AN’ GRUMBLY LIKE “/STEP!/ POPPOP! Myevilstep-poppop...”

And that’s when Eclipsa gets 100% serious and her tone get’s kinda sad and soft like “ So because ze stepped in and zir part demon, zir just evil and an accessory for ‘Bad Girls’? Like those Scissors?”

And Star’s like “HOW DID YOU-” but then Margo comes back with her mom and dad following and Rafael scoops Eclipsa off the floor and she’s like “Ooooo, Angie! Your husband is so strong ... Wait’ll you meet mine!” And Angie’s like “HAHA THANKS!” *whispers to Margo* “Howdoessheknowournames?”

Rafs all insecure like “Whoisherhusband?”

“IdontknowMomandDad...I.Dont.Know......”

Then later, they have her settled on the couch with a warm blanket and a hot cup of tea, Margo realizes Eclipsa has a permeant disability but still doesn’t trust her (thinking she’s faking, putting on some cliche act) so she just drops the bomb of “LOOK .... I know you’re a Granny and all, but ....aren’t you a bit too YOUNG to be disabled?”

And without missing a beat, right in front of her parents, Eclipsa just grins and goes “Aren’t you a bit too young to have lived 30 years of your life in an alternate dimension and have the mark of Heckapoo, JENNIFER RINK? ;3 ” and goes right back to sipping her tea.

“....30 /WHAT/?!”

“....... Mark of /WHO/???!!!”

“OH!” *ECLIPSA PUTS DOWN HER TEA USING HER SPOON LIKE A WAND IN THE AIR* “IT’S ‘HECK-A-POO’. HECKAPOO!”

*Raf gets sidetracked seeing her do a lil’ magic with her tea spoon when her eyes start to glow* “I’m sorry if this is invasive to ask, Mrs. Eclipsa, but ... Can you shoot lasers out of your eyes like these puppies?”

Margo’s still horrified. “STAR. HOW DOES SHE KNOW THESE THINGS????!!!??”

Star’s just like “ CAUSE GRANDMA’S KNOW, JENNIFER! Grandma’s know!!!”

Eclipsa’s like “That’s my girl.”

“But Queen Eclips- ...GRANNY! You never answered Mr. Diaz’s question!”

*sips tea* “The answer is that I most certainly can, Star.”

“AAAWH YIIII-”

*takes another sip of tea before adding* “But I only use my laser powers in the most EXTREME of emergencies.”

“Awwh.”

*Finally finishes tea and there’s a flash of light and Eclipsa appears to be gone before Star feels something warm and fuzzy curled up on her lap * “Unless ... Anyone would like to see what I look like as a laser kitty? :3″

“AAAAAAAAAWWHH!!!!”

CONCEPT: THE “TIE” AROUND ECLIPSA’S WASTE IS ACTUALLY A FASHIONABLE BACK BRACE MADE TO LOOK LIKE A PART OF HER DRESS. IT HELPS HER STAND UP BETTER.

And I WILL make a post for all the Past Queens disabilities, it’s just I came up with a cute little pun for mine and I don’t feel comfortable making Mewni style puns for other peoples disabilities... ^ ^; So when I make that post the disabilities will just be listed as they are on Earth and #STARVSTHEFORCESOFABLEISM seems like a better catch all, since the term “CPunk” was coined by somebody else and means a very specific thing... ^ ^;

But Eclipsa’s disability is called “Celestial Purrsy” (a play on my own disability, Cerebral Palsy) and it basically means she has all the advantages/disadvantages of a cat ... ^ ^; It’s taken as a birth defect by the Mewmans because she looks like she has DNA from different dimension? ^ ^; Like this is gonna sound kinda morbid and dark but they suspect she’s a “changeling” and that the alternative version OF Eclipsa (like the one of Star we see in “MathMagic”)

Somehow replaced/possessed the “REAL” one at birth because she was born with her little kitty eyes/mouth

and paws

Which she’s been made to cover up since birth in order to look more like a “normal” mewman , like think of the old wives tale of cats stealing babies breath and the dreaded dimension of Star vs. where cats have human faces, on Mewni there’s basically this old wive tale of “Mewmans who have cat faces” and if they’re born that way it’s Bad Luck because they’re “The Cat Who Snatched The Mewmans Body” and that’s what they think happened to Eclipsa. That’s why they call her “Eclipsa” because they think “a dark shadow was cast over their baby” A “Fairy Godmothers curse” (The character of ‘Baby’ is actually described as “Star’s Fairy Godmother”in wikipedia summary. So maybe they think Eclipsa’s cursed with a cat face because the Fairy burped on her or or something AND THAT’S WHY THEY HATE HER SO MUCH OH MY GOSH. GET IT? AN OLD WIVES ABOUT BABIES BREATH? A FAIRY GODMOTHER CAT NAMED ‘BABY’? OH MY GOSH. They blame things like Eclipsa’s size and her love of food on Baby too, but that’s just another part of the stigma Eclipsa faces because her parents are arseholes.

Eclipsa even went through Mewberty “wrong” because her Mewberty from actually looks a lot like Baby ... And other Mewmans are like “Eeew, what are you? you silly Cat/Bug/Moth thing we’re supposed to be strictly INSECT BASED!!!!”

And instead of “BOYS” all she wanted to do was play with balls of yarn ... She hoarded all the yarn, and then she actually CREATED the “Worlds Most Dangerous Creature” we see in ‘Inter-Dimensional Field Trip’ WITH THE YARN...

For what purpose though, her parents were concerned...

She was basically treated as more of a prized house pet than a mewman, a Familiar meant to serve rather than the Queen she was met to be, and, like Star, she didn’t know basic magic ... As Queen of Mewni, she was a Familiar/Figure head, an “inspiration” to the kingdom more than anything and her husband at the time, a boarder-line powerless Mewman who never left his mewberty form by choice, King Lunar (LOO-NAR) used her for her magic, she was barely allowed to use her wand and the parasol was always opened up and propped on her wheelchair behind her where she couldn’t reach it in order to “shield her from the elements”, as Lunar put it.

They married because he took her out to The Bloodmoon Ball on a pity date, dancing was required according to their parents, and their souls “accidentally” bonded. Just as they intended.

SO you all know cerebral palsy is a muscle thing, right? Well with Eclipsa, her “Celestial Purrsy” is A BIT more exaggerated like someone (Glossaryck) will sneak up on her and she’ll have a muscle spasm, even if she’s prepared for it, but if she’s not wearing her seat belt, she’ll do that kitty thing where she’ll end up clinging to the ceiling, cat noises and everything, and she has those weird ticks that I have where she’ll get a twitch through her body like ....

It’s less pleasant than Jiji’s in the context of that gif, but t that’s the only way I know how to to describe it ... And then Glossaryck tries to get her to relax and “dip down” to try to get her off the ceiling but she just ... can’t do it... not because she’s afraid (it’s just an INVOLUNTARY REFLEX, EVERYONE CALLS HER A “SCAREDY CAT” OR APOLOGIZES AND NOBODY GETS IT...) but because her purrsy effected muscles are so tense and she can’t unclench them cause ...her body is afraid it’ll hurt? ^ ^; So Glossaryck will have to call Lunar to help get her down and he’s part moth, so he’ll like make a big show of like, crawling up the ceiling to get her and he’ll do it extra slow just to freak her out more because he knows that she hates it when she touches her but she can’t show it cause he’s her care giver and her husband and she feels guilty for doubting his love and daring to think he makes her uncomfortable on purpose... yeah marriage problems ... ^ ^; Sorry for creepy imagery ... ^ ^;

Glossaryck tries to talk to Lunar about it and suggests that MAYBE she’ll be more comfortable around him if he actually lets her USE HER WAND... since she hasn’t touched it since she was a teenager and WHO KNOWS HOW HER PERSONALITY HAS CHANGED SINCE THEN ... So Lunar’s like “FINE!!! HERE ECLIPSA!” (he can hand here the wand without effect on him since he doesn’t actually have hands to hold it with... he has feelers and mewberty goop... so everything just kinda... latches on to him all sticky ..... yeah, sorry for nightmare fuel again) Aaaaaaanndd we get our first glimpse of our Queen of Darkness then, wardrobe change and everything (the thorn crown doesn’t come in until she spends more time with Grimalkin and more specifically, when she’s evaluated by Baby and grows her apple tree later, when she’s been living with her Lover, they ask the Fairy Godmother to marry them right there), everyone is surprised by the transformation expect for Glossaryck, who’s like “Somebody’s been suppressing a lot of ANGER ....” *Looks over at Lunar* “Wonder what could be the cause* And then Lunar looks over at Eclipsa who looks about ready to KILL HIM an’ he snatches the wand away as quickly as she had it via his gross Mewberty goop and he’s like “SEE?! All that power is far too dangerous for someone so small look at what just happened! You just turned yourself into a monster when your supposed to be my sweet little muffin!”

Now we get to Toffee’s relation to Eclipsa.... after the whole wand thing happened he was actually (supposed to be) her aid. Cause King Lunar become paranoid of his wife becoming “out of control” and needed someone to “control” her when he wasn’t there because “ (ableism) I’m too busy to be scrapping you off the ceiling every time you have one of your episodes!!!! (ableism)” So .... he tries some of the Mewman staff at first ... But they’re all ether too condescending or just plain afraid of her and don’t even wanna touch her ... and Eclipsa knows this and plays it up to her advantage... So Lunar finally get’s this idea ... And he picks who he deems the most “intelligent” in the ... lizard prison... tells them that they’re going to “Keep an eye on the Queen”, takes them to Eclipsa’s room and Lunar’s like “Okay LIZARD I’m gonna show you what you’re working with here” And it’s just Eclipsa, alone, by herself, eating this big bowl of candy with her gloves off and pawing at the wrappers...

And the lizards like “She looks SLIGHTLY less bored than I am...”

“She’s hysterical ...”

*mumbles* “ComingfromLunarTheLoon....”

“What was that, REPTILE...?”

“Nothing...! Yourbugeyedbenevolence...”

“If you’re so keen on insulting someone today, just make sure you speak to HER in the slowest, weirdest voice possible!”

“....OKIEDOKIEHOPEYOUCHOKIE!!!”

Then the door slams and it’s perpetual “SURPRISE!!!!” voice until Eclipsa goes “Oi Lizzie! You like some tea from all that Buff- frog in ya throat?!”

And then Liz drops the act like “Oh, I don’t eat garbage...”

“Well, had me confused, you are what you eat...”

“And you’re hysterical...”

“Mm. So I’ve heard. But I’m sure the Buff-frogs don’t like hearing their fellow monsters think they’re ‘garbage’. That’s not a very nice thing to say about someone, is it? Even if it is used as an excuse not to eat them.”

“I suppose that’s true... Are you going to strike me now?”

“Why would I strike the hand that feeds me?”

“On days like this, I can think of many reasons, especially if you’re hungry.”

*She edges the bowl of candy over to him* “Please. :3″

“...Thank you....” *Being the ... picky eater that he is, (or making certain it’s not poison) she notices him carefully searching for his favorite candy and laughs when he gathers a handful of it*

“There you go!”

*Mouth already full of Saltwater Toffee* “Whut ...?!”

”I think your name is Toffee! What would you say about that?”

*he looks guilty for all the candy pieces he’s holding in his hands* I’d say that it would suit me, Queen Eclipsa, Thank you!”

“Your very welcome, Toffee! Also, that reminds me, we need to buy you a suit, it’ll look more official when you help me boot out my bugger of a husband! *ironic ship teasing/future ex girlfriend reference bc she later falls for someone who wears no suits at all, CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT*

Toffee can’t help but find this amusing and smilies “You want me to... AIDE you in starting a rebellion against your husband?”

*Eclipsa borrows a piece of his toffee, pops it in her mouth, and grins* “Now look who’s hysterical...”

The very next day, Toffee returns to Eclipsa all beaten and bloodied up. His tail is missing and , he’s pretty much dying. Eclipsa is freaking out...realizing her wand is gone too, doesn’t know what’s going on but has a pretty good inkling of who’s behind it. Next thing you know Lunar comes in all like “Hm. That’s two things that don’t belong to me now, or is it three? You’ll never get your kingdom back.”

And Eclipsa is tears “I don’t care about the kingdom! What did you do to to Toffee?!”

And Lunar throws the tail and the and the wand back to their rightful owners and says “What I could never do to my bugger of a bride!” before slamming the door on them again.

The second he leaves, Eclipsa drops herself out of her chair unto to the floor, crawls over to Toffee, asks him to tell her what she can do to to help him, and he tells her weakly that he’s heard of an ancient being in the dark forest who supposed to heal monsters, Eclipsa’s like “Alright, we’ll go there. Right now.” Takes off her hat and props it under his head, then goes over to her bed to get some pillows, where her book is laying.

Glossaryck pops out and is like “What are you doing?”

“You heard what just went on.”

“You’re going to The Dark Forest to seek Grimalkin.”

“ Gesundheit.”

“No no. Grimalkin is the name of the HEALER. Trust me, if I sneezed, you’d know it.”

“Get away.”

“Eclipsa, I’m you’re teacher and YOU NEED ME.”

“No I don’t.”

“Fine. Be that as it may, I will accompany you on your journey.”

“Why?”

“SATISFACTION BROUGHT IT BACK!”

“...Whatever. Help me pad my chair with these pillows while I lift Toffee up, and hurry.”

“...Maybe if you cast ‘LEVITATO’-”

“I KNOW!!!!”

Toffee protests to taking Eclipsa’s chair but Eclipsa says that right now, he needs it more than she does. “Besides, I have my Gait Trainer, silly Gator!” They secure some rope they got from Eclipsa’s curtains to the chair and Toffee’s under the impression that Eclipsa’s going to tie the other end around her waist and pull him herself, so he objects to that too. He earns some perfect shoujo laughter and a “Don’t be ridiculous, Toffee!” Before giving a sharp whistle and a small usher of rats scurry out from under the bed “I mean, I would if I had to, but there’s no need. Follow Mummy babies!” and just like that they grab a hold of Toffee’s rope and follow her out every door, with to rats stationed in front of her to help open them.

One of the servants asks if they should do something, watching her head towards the dark forest from the window, to which Lunar responds “Nah, curiosity killed the cat.” And the rest is history. Basically because Toffee made her PROMISE to come back and visit him every day because he heard what Lunar had said to her before and was afraid for her at that point. Which Grimalkin allows because he BEGS xem and the Guardian sees how this monster cares for HER. Plus she looks too exhausted to do any real harm at the moment.

Eclipsa promises Toffee that she’ll come back, and she’ll start working on her spells for self defense.

When Eclipsa asks Grimalkin tells her that Toffee’s tail can’t be re-attached, and it could take a while for the other lizard monsters who to live there to teach him how to regenerate, maybe even generations but zie CAN preserve his life. Maybe even raise a new life from the old tail.

When she hears this, and she’s letting it sink in that Toffee almost died, Eclipsa considers making up an immortality spell so she’ll never have to worry about the scare of losing him ever again. Then Eclipsa tells the guardian about the prison and zie promise to see what can be done. Also this happen at some point, after they’re at least on a more friendly/flirty basis ...

“You’re a healer, right?”

“You know what I am.”

”Yeah, well...How come other people don’t know I can’t be cured?”

“Dunno.”

“I mean I know I KNOW...and YOU KNOW, so how come THEY dunno? YA KNOW?!”

”The answer is as mysterious as my origins, Purple One.”

“YOU’RE A PURPLE ONE! Also, your stripes are really pretty!”

“So are your paws.”

“May I feel your pretty stripes with my pretty paws? :3″

“You are MARRIED! Also, I am not purple, I am Magenta.”

“ And I’m Sorry I Asked! ;W;”

Toffee is watching them like “Pfft ... FURRIES!”

When things start getting more intense between them (Grimalkin & Eclipsa) later, Eclipsa tells Lunar over dinner that she wants to make other living arrangements, of course, the tyrannical King laughs in her face. THIS is what leads the Lovers to make arrangements of their own behind the King of Mewni’s back, at least until they can get away, they’re hoping ...

That’s pretty much it, sorry for going into a bit a mini fic mode, I just really wanted to sell the idea of Eclipsa... being a disabled person so that people would actually, you know... want to draw her as such. ^ ^; Since I don’t think it’ll happen at all in the show, twice, although it would be a freaking miracle if it did ... ^ ^;

I’m also sorry for the snobby way that I think some of this post is worded? ^ ^; I’m not trying to play the oppression game with anyone here .... ^ ^; It’s just, people see a character and they think of ways to see themselves.... and anyone can draw a missing eye, limb, or cane as a cool character trait or accessory but absolutely NOBODY (as far as I know) sees a character and thinks “I’m going to draw that “abled-bodied” character in a wheelchair, so people who maybe don’t have the physical ability to create sometimes can see themselves too”. Which is why I think starting a movement along the lines of #DRAWHERSITTINGDOWN, or more inclusively #DRAWTHEMSITTINGDOWN would be SUPER IMPORTANT.

I mean, at least it’s better than saying “cripple the bitch”. Which in retrospect I’m surprised hasn’t been turned into some kind of revolutionary artistic renaissance or reclamation movement made exclusively for disabled artists to draw what disabilities they’ve envisioned for the abled-bodied characters that they adore already (in a way that’s not the result of villainous violence or results in vendetta, unless of of course they’re a villain or simply have a vendetta against our abled-bodied overlords whom oppress us so, that would be an excellent excuse to have those elements included in the explanation of how their disability effects them, like I just did with Eclipsa ).

Because I feel bad and embarrassed because every time I want to see an “abled-bodied” character in a wheelchair, I think of the phrase “cripple the bitch” and then my internalized ablism thinks up some horrible accident they were in order to “make them that way”. Because nobody draws an “abled bodied” character in a wheelchair just because. Unless it’s the disability sign. And we need to start.

STAR VS. THE FORCES OF EVIL IS THE /ONLY SHOW/ WHERE I FEEL COMFORTABLE ENOUGH STARTING IT! AND I /STILL/ FEEL THE NEED TO EXPLAIN /WHY/ I NEED THIS HEADCANON RATHER THAN JUST SAY BECAUSE I DON’T HAVE ANY EVIDENCE OR CODING TO HELP ME. AND I’M AFRAID PEOPLE WILL ETHER HUMOR ME ONCE OR WON’T FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH IT BECAUSE THEY’RE ABLED BODIED. AND WHERE IS TOBY?! IS MY SON STILL IN DETENTION?! I DON’T MEAN TO DISOWN HIM BUT I DESERVE BETTER THAN AN ACTUAL HUMAN SIDE CHARACTER WHO ONLY SHOWED UP ONCE, A GOAT, A WEIRD WEREWOLF GUY, AND

I’m sorry that I feel like I’m playing the oppression olympics right now, like I’m wheeling over eggshells with every word that I type, but I know I deserve better, I really do! I deserve my Disabled Queen of Darkness, Eclipsa. And she and her wheels deserve a spot on Daron Necfy’s Diverse (and I’m not being ironic because I LOVE YOU FAERIE GOD MOM <3) wall of art, along with an actual (and still autistic) Star on Wheels . And so do Eclipsa’s husband and their son, Toby. Like all four in the same picture; a family portrait. That Would Be AMAZING!!! Especially if “Grimalkin” was like, like both Eclipsa AND Toby up on each arm IN THIER WHEELCHAIRS like they were lifting weights like in a “strong man” pose cause they’re arms are definitely big enough to support two manual wheelchairs that weigh virtually nothing them cause they’re so strong and they just ... can.

And Star is parked on the floor in front in her power chair ... with “The Gang” (Trans Marco, Jackie, Tom, Janna and Starfan13) all gathered around her and they’re all just being happy an goofy and Janna’s in Star’s lap, probably. Starfan13 didn’t have enough room so she’s like, squishing Star’s face with her’s in a hug, you know that cute squishy hug face?

Ingrid’s in the picture too, sitting in the monsters arms at Toby’s side holding his hand cause he’s a little nervous that he’ll fall. She wanted to be in the photo too and Grimalkin understood her cause they also speak German and they asked her if she could keep Toby company so he wouldn’t be scared. She said okay, but she’s not giving up her comfort item for nothin’, also it will cost The Queen her guillotine.

Eclipsa’s over on the other arm just lookin’ as chill as ever. Cause she knows that her Lovie would never let her roll off.

That would look PERFECT on Daron’s wall! Hopefully #DISABLEDQUEENOFDARKNESS becomes as popular as other fanon so we can make that happen! Feel to use any of the tags I’ve created to start posting!!! I have other thoughts on the monster themselves, their love for Eclipsa, it’s importance to the entire freaking plot of the series, and the way they’ve been treated in favor of Toffee and Eclipsa herself, like that line about treating the monster lover as an accessory was there for a reason and I’m pissed, but I’ll write up why later because YOU KNOW WHY... and I wanna go ahead and get this posted before the final airs.

I encourage everyone who sees this to reblog this even if they’re not in the Star vs. fandom! Like you can consider this a one fandom/character/headcanon/masterpost thing but I feel like it’s a great way to get the general tags of #DRAWHERSITTINGDOWN and #DRAWTHEMSITTINGDOWN started! Also, REMEMBER: DO /NOT/ USE THE WORD “CRIPPLE” IF YOU ARE NOT PHYSICALLY DISABLED!!!!!

I know using “if” in an apology is wrong but I don’t know how else to word this so ... I’m genuinely sorry if any other physically disabled people reading this are uncomfortable with my usage of the word in this post? ^ ^; It’s just it’s used as a catchall by other people in our community and after finding cpunk, I recently started identifying with the word to help me find other people ... ^ ^; <3 OX

And SPEAKING of cool criminal individuals I just want to thank Red for publishing my ask in the first place. She’s helped and inspired so many with the Trans Marco theory and she’s the one who helped me realize I had a basis for my Disabled Queen of Darkness too. Also, she’s the one who inspired the idea of Eclipsa’s husband being some weird bug thing who preferred to stay in their Mewberty stage, “like an invading body snatcher virus took over.” Because it shows some real contrast between some monsters and the mewmans I think, rather than just being some humanoid oppressors afraid of the scary monsters because they “don’t understand”. Because they had this “mewberty” thing happen to them, where they ether “wouldn’t be back to normal”, or they made the conscious decision to stay in or out of it, good or bad, and if they understood exactly what they were doing to the other monsters and enjoyed it because they considered THEMSELVES the“ideal” of what a monster should look like. And then that bad history was erased through centuries of .... literal humanization I just think there’s a bit more to explore through that narrative then having Eclipsa’s former husband be some cliche Gaston stereotype, or even the “well meaning Nice Guy TM who lets the girl go” trope.

And I know that making the Mewman King Eclipsa was married to a tyrant is a bit of a cliche as well, but striping Eclipsa of the powers she’s supposed have because of that, giving Eclipsa a physical disability and have her be oppressed because of that, like Star would be with the autism headcanon... It would kinda level the playing flied between Eclipsa and the Monster a bit because THEY’RE BOTH MINORITIES!!! THEY’RE BOTH OPPRESSED!!!! The Monster a bit more than Eclipsa but still ... the thing common helps them understand each other a bit more and helps this become much more than “ I married my oppressor because I changed them and they changed me” “love” story, because c’mon, so far, the basis for these two finding a connection in these fandom has been “You’re not bad for a ______” AND WE ARE SO NOT DOING THAT WITH WHAT’S SUPPOSED TO BE AN ALLEGORY FOR AN INTERRACIAL RELATIONSHIP C’MON ....

And I wouldn’t have thought any of this if it weren’t for Red, she’s our rebel princess, she’s the best, loves the wayward sister in the purple dress, she’s given me the courage to fight, for Heckapoo On Wheels, Disabled Dark Queens and Butterfly’s ....and TOOOOOOOOOOOOBBBBBBBBBBYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!

Okay so I hope that wasn’t too corny but like, seriously, I love you Red!! You are ROCK and are (truly) an inspiring beautiful person who’s fun to be around and I hope this isn’t embarrassing or too much because I know we only ever had contact from that ask, but I owe you so much credit for inspiring me to claim Queen Eclipsa for myself as well as the other Past Queens of Mewni for other people with disabilities because it’s amazing that you and Daron have made me feel comfortable in my own skin enough to do that! I love this show and this little niche fandom of Wayward Princesses SO MUCH and it all means so much to me you have no idea and I am SO GLAD you’re a part of it!!! I’m worried that some of this post as well as that ask was worded with some twinges of jealously ... and maybe that’s why it wasn’t originally reblogged .... because I sounded so ...impatient? But I want you to know that I mean this, un-ironically, from bottom of my heart and I’m not just saying for notes or popularity: You are important. You are loved. You have done so much for the community and so much for me and so many other great things and more than enough things for me to thank you for so you don’t need to feel pressured to reblog this, Red! Just know that I thank you from the bottom of my heart and you’ll continue to do even more, I wouldn’t have known there was an interest in Eclipsa being disabled or have the courage to write this if it weren’t for you!!
