Leonard “Wolfman” Wolfe (Henry “Wolfman” Ruth) Master List
Tumblr media
Fresh Meat // Ao3: Fresh Meat *700+ Celebratory post*
Summary: It’s been some time since you and your girl Charlie went out. After some persuading, you two find yourselves in a bar... surrounded by her students. It’s a good thing your single, not ready to mingle and yet you find yourself oddly attached to the one they call Wolfman even with his semi-inappropriate jokes. There is one thing you can admit though, he’s got a charming attitude and stealing his hat really drives him wild ;)
Thick Gloves and Bloody Mouth Pieces // Ao3: Thick Gloves and Bloody Mouth Pieces
Sneak peek for TGABMP
Summary: Boxer Au. It’s time for Wolfman to train for his upcoming big fight, something you won’t miss (you never miss his fights their fights). Too back Dick Rick pissed you off and the boys teasing drew you away to your... fun night. Thankfully Hollywood (the real Rick) helped pull Leonard’s head out of his ass and made him realize that you’re close to slipping through his fingers. If only he had done it in a slightly nicer way like not crashing your shitty date. Oh, and also, not threaten said date.
Let’s Get to Planning // Sonograms // Ao3: Let’s Get to Planning
Sneak peek for LGTP
Summary: A classic friends with benefits situation leads to a beautiful new beginning for you and Leonard. Sucky part is, you left after coming to the realization that nothing would come of this. You truly believed that this relationship wasn’t going anywhere, if only he knew how to tell you how he truly felt. Thankfully Charlie was able to talk some sense into you so you could talk to Leonard and let him know about your current condition. And more on how Charlotte and Leonard deal with you further along the pregnancy.
A Wish is a Dream your Heart Makes // Ao3: A Wish is a Dream your Heart Makes
Sneak peek for AWIADYHM
Summary: Cinderella AU. Prince Leonard is throwing a ball... more like father. It seems as though it’s time for the prince to search for the one he will call wife for the rest of his life. If only your stepmother would let you go, then again, fairy tales do exist. In this tale specifically, you learn how nice it is to have friends with all kinds of skills. You arrive... late, of course because this a reality not some kind of fictional tale. You not only catch the eye of the handsome prince, who is someone you’ve known for quite some time and have missed.
Thinking of You // Ao3: Thinking of You
Summary: 50 First Dates AU. Leonard is new to town and sees you for the first time but quickly learns how protective everyone is of you. But even though he may be a playboy he learns about the hardships of love and relationships. As time goes on and your told of your head injury once more, you two date for some time until you decide you shouldn’t any longer. And although he wanted to leave, he couldn’t and realizes that you remember him, he can’t leave.
Call All You Want // Ao3: Call All You Want
Summary: You and Leonard get into a fight, leaving you to go out with the girls to get your mind off things but that only works when one of you isn’t being bugged the whole time. You don’t bother answering him, until he finds his way into the club. The girls do all they can to help you but can only do so much when they’re dealing with the other guys (distracting them as they planned). Or the rest of the crew is trying to get one of their own to stop being a dancer.
Blast to the Past // Ao3: Blast to the Past
Summary: You forgot what it was like to walk down the halls and got to experience it again, even if it was just for a few seconds. It was exhilarating. Then your favorite captain, the only one of your past students you really fought for, came to teach the latest generation (which includes baby Goose). Your husband comes home, giving you the opportunity to gossip and show him who you saw.

Pairing: Leonard “Wolfman” Wolfe (Henry “Wolfman” Ruth) x Civilian!Reader
Characters: Civilian!Reader, Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, Leonard “Wolfman” Wolfe (Henry “Wolfman” Ruth), Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, Ron “Slider” Kerner, Rick “Hollywood” Neven, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (briefly mentioned), Jake the ex-boyfriend (briefly mentioned)
Warnings: Wolfman is adorable (and horny), but so is the reader, the reader and Charlie as besties are a great and terrifying duo, Goose is a little shit, Iceman and Slider are a chaotic duo with a great psychic link, Hollywood and Wolfman bringing back their classic quote, honestly this is crazy but in a good way
Word Count: 2,882
A/N:  Reader’s “Name” is darlin’ and reader says Charls as sh-are-els
... Last night during my Top Gun searchin’ adventure, I’ve found some information that leads me to believe I’ve been duped. Apparently, Wolfman’s name in the movie was Henry Ruth but everywhere else you look you find Leonard Wolfe. I don’t know what to believe but I’m putting both names for the pairing but using Leonard for fics and we’re moving on
*Also, y’all are so sweet! We just went from 581 to 700 yesterday, I feel like it might be a glitch, but it doesn’t seem like it so we’re celebrating!
                                * 700+ follower celebratory post *
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You turn the tv off.
“We should go out.”
You look over at Charlotte with furrowed brows at the outlandish idea. “Out where? Anywhere we go you’ll be hit on and I just- I don’t want to go out.”
She sticks her bottom lip out making you feel bad. “Please?”
“No, Charls.” You look down at your outfit (if you could even call it that. Pajamas and a baggy shirt don’t normally do well for a night of drinking), “plus I’m not even ready and it’s too late.”
She lifts your watch, pulling it close to dramatize. “We have plenty of time to get ready and have a girl’s night. No guys. No talking or spending the night with anyone. Just us two.” She sees the hesitation spreading across your face. “Please? Darlin, we haven’t been out together in so long. I miss it.”
“I miss it too, babes but it’s- I-” You stupidly look back at her and throw your head back, sliding off the couch, letting out a quiet whine. “I hate you.”
She lets out a victory laugh. “Oh, you have no idea how happy you’ve made me,” she practically crawls across the couch, wrapping her arms around your shoulders, pulling you back.
A slow chuckle escapes you. “Yeah, yeah. I’m amazing. I know.”
“Are you sure you haven’t been to base? You’re starting to sound an awful lot like them.”
“Oh,” you shove her off you. “Bite me, Charls.” You push yourself off the floor and walk down the hallway, entering your room.
“You even have their lame retorts too!”
“Suck a dick!”
“That’s better. They definitely wouldn’t say that.” She exits the living room, wandering towards the “guest” room even though you consider it her room since she uses it more than you do. She’s claimed the closet and dresser as hers, the math adds up, but she doesn’t want to hear it.
The two of you laugh as you work on getting ready for your girls’ night.
-
“Are you done yet, Darlin’?”
You put the cap back into your lipstick, “could you give me a minute? Geez, you’re worse than Jake.”
Your bedroom door opens, the clacking of her heels against the hardwood floor tells you she’s getting closer.
“How are you doing today? I wanted to ask earlier but I didn’t want to make you sad.”
You shrug, chucking your lipstick into your purse before checking your teeth making sure there are no marks. “I mean, it’s whatever. We weren’t going anywhere, it’s better to break it off now than wait until we were married or something.”
She nods, “that’s true but it doesn’t mean you’re going to be magically healed. You still have to grieve even if you aren’t affected by it.”
You rest your hands against the countertop, closing your eyes. “You’re right but,” a heavy sigh slips through your parted lips. “I just- I don’t want it to seem like I’m moving on to fast.” You turn around, leaning against the sink, “I don’t want it to seem like I’m moving on too soon.”
“It’s been six months since the breakup,” she points out. “Plus, he has a new girlfriend.”
“That’s true.”
“Come on. You deserve to have fun and let loose.” She stands beside you, nudging your arm with her elbow. “It’s time you leave this place and make some friends. Maybe even wake up in some stranger’s bed.”
You scoff, pushing yourself off the counter. “Oh my God. Charlotte Blackwood.”
She cackles, “don’t use my full name. I didn’t do nothing wrong.”
“You’re using your other head and you know it.”
Charlotte gasps, “how dare you! I’m doing no such thing.”
You hum, “and if that was the case you wouldn’t have slept with one of your students.”
“Sometimes I regret telling you everything.”
“But if you didn’t, life would be boring.”
“If that’s what you think.” The smile slips from your lips.
“No, no. Don’t start thinking now. We’re gonna finished getting you dolled up and then we’re gonna have a couple of drinks before we go to the nearest fast-food place and order too much so the employees can judge use at two in the morning.”
You shake your head and arms, getting rid of your nerves. “Okay,” you grab your purse. “We gotta leave now before I lose my cool.”
“They won’t know what hit them when we get there.”
“Sure. Yeah.”
“Oh no,” she shakes her head, pulling your arm. “We’re leaving and we’re leaving now.”
 -
Charlotte walks through the doors and turns her head with a smile on her face, expecting to see you there only to see the bar. She sighs, turning around to grab you and haul you inside. “We’re having a girl’s night which means more than one female or else it’d be a sad night.”
“You’d find someone else to be your bed buddy.”
“If you continue to imply that I’m a whore...”
A smirk tugs at the corner of your mouth, “you’ll do what?”
She doesn’t respond and rushes towards the bar.
You follow after her with a little pep in your step.
Neither of you say anything after ordering your drinks.
-
Ron taps Tom’s shoulder, pointing over towards the two of you. “Hey, isn’t that Charlie?”
The man turns and a smirk slowly appears across his lips. “Why, Ron, I do believe it is.”
“Should we?”
“You mean, should we talk to the instructor that hothead Maverick decides to sleep with and break it off before things could get serious?”
“We are, aren’t we.”
“This is why you’re my RIO.” Tom walks ahead while Ron shakes his head, slightly wishing he never said anything but then thinks about what Pete’s reaction would be and all sensible thinking is thrown out the window.
He grabs Leonard and Rick by the back of their necks which intrigues Nick causing him to follow.
-
“Hello,” the one with frosted tips starts.
“If we knew all the instructors were this pretty, we would have tried harder to get in,” the one with the cowboy hat says.
You glance over to Charlie, who lowers her head. You want to ask her what’s wrong until you realize who they are. “Oh.”
She turns her head, forehead still resting on her arm. “You see what I’m dealing with.”
You chuckle, “oh, yeah.”
The one with the mustache busts through the line of guys. “Charles. Charlie. The Charmer. The C-dog beneath Mave’s wings, how are you?”
You cover your mouth to hide your snickers.
He turns towards you, “you like that, huh?”
“God, no.” You shake your head, “that was terrible, but you were so confident while doing it.”
He rubs the back of his neck, “uh- thanks. I think?”
“You have a wife, Mother Goose. Move it,” the tall one next to frosted tips sneers at him.
Mother Goose puffs out his chest, “don’t you talk about her, Slippery Slide.”
You stare at the two with your jaw close to the ground. “You’re married?” Your head snaps towards Charlotte’s. “He’s married.”
She nods, “I’m afraid so. Oh, and they have a child.”
“Well, bless their hearts.”
“We’ve never met before, but I find that to be very rude.”
“If you heard the way you talked out loud, you’d be thinking the same as me.”
The others chuckle.
“But,” you draw out. “You pull it off well so, I can see why you’re lucky to call yourself a married man.”
A boyish grins tugs at his lips, “thank you, miss.”
You pull Charlotte along with you towards a table, wanting to get away from the guys before they try to see either of you without any clothes on.
If only the drinking gods were listening.
-
Mother Goose shoves the one in the hat, who then trips over people’s feet; his arms flailing in the air as he tries to balance himself only to fail and fall at your feet.
He reaches up making sure his hats still on his head (it is). His eyes stop on a pair of decently worn-out sneakers, his eyes keep moving up until he spots your tilted head.
He swears you’re an angel sent to him and it’s only because of his lucky (and only) hat.
There’s a pretty smile dancing across your lips as you put your hand out to help him up.
The dopey expression on his face makes the others shake their heads.
“I told you to watch your step.”
You turn to look at him. “Mother Goose, was it?”
He shakes his head, “just Goose.”
He smiles, acting like he didn’t do anything wrong.
“Got it,” you nod, pretending to that correction into consideration. “Listen here, shit head Goose-”
He stares at you offended at your “nickname” for him with one hand on his chest, mouth agape.
“You should learn to not be mean and trip your fellow classmates. These guys here are the ones that watch your back. Pilot, RIO, WSO, whatever your title and/ or occupation may be because one day you’re gonna prank the wrong person and then you’ll be screwed.”
“Rude,” he mutters.
“Am I wrong?”
He hesitates to answer. “No.”
“Exactly.”
-
Leonard leans over to Rick, “I think I’m getting a hard-on.”
His buddy scoffs, jerk his arm with his elbow, “don’t tease me.”
-
“I have to go make a call.”
“Bye bye, Goose!” You shout, waving your arm erratically like an insane person. Nick smiles and returns the wave.
“Bye, mean, crazy lady!”
Charlotte bumps your arm, staring at you with a raised brow.
You give her a smile in return.
She shakes her head. This is exactly why she never brought you to base.
-
“What now?” Rick asks Leonard with an annoyed tone.
“I will give you a crinkly, crisp ten-dollar bill, if you get the slippery combo out of here.”
“Sixty and we’ll leave the bar.”
“Why are you ruining my chances at finding love? Be honest with me. What did I do to you?”
His buddy rolls his eyes, “if I’m taking muscles and frosted tips with me, I’m gonna need something to pay off the tab you created.”
He sighs, “alright, fine.” He slaps the cash into Rick’s hand.
“Run along now.”
The man with the cash walks behind the two, pulling them over to the side. “Follow me if you want to save yourself.”
Tom and Ron give each other a questioning look; they look back to see Wolfman trying to use his classic go to moves, they follow Hollywood without any more convincing.
-
“So,” he starts off. “Would you like to have babies sometime?”
Yours and Charlotte’s widen, she snorts her drink out her nose and leaves to clean herself up in the restroom while you pat your chest and cough.
Your throats a little scratchy from the saliva and spontaneous coughing fit. You take a sip of your drink. “What?”
He winces, lowering his hat. “Sorry, I was uh- I was trying to say something nice but then I- well, I said that. If you want to leave, I wouldn’t blame you.”
Once you manage to catch your breath, the corner of your lips tugs upwards. “I think I’d rather stay here and talk to you. You can certainly keep a girl on her toes.”
He lifts his hat off his brow, staring at you through his lashes. “Well, if that’s what you want, I’d be happy to make that happen.”
You lean closer, “let’s get a booth.”
He nods, “okay.”
You two spend the rest of the night talking, sadly leaving Charlotte alone but luckily, she was able to talk to the other guys who made their way to you two earlier.
-
She glances over at you, happy to see you finally enjoying yourself even if it is with one of her students.
She may not approve of his language at times, more so one specific comment but still happy that you’ve found yourself someone who can make you smile and give you more Jake ever did.
She realizes now you have a legit excuse to come to base. This isn’t going to be good for her.
Tom chuckles, seemingly realizing what’s going on in the instructor’s head.
“Don’t say anything.”
“I won’t,” he says in between his breathless chuckles. “You can count on that.”
“Oh God,” Rick adds.
Ron furrows his brows, “what’s wrong with you?”
“That horny knuckle head just got himself a girl. I’m never gonna hear the end of it.”
The two friends chuckle at the twos expense.
“Ah, but just think Hollywood,” Ron starts. “If he annoys you, you can send him to her so she can deal with it.”
“Unless she’s not home,” Charlotte adds. “I’ve been trying to get her out of the house for the past few months and today was success.”
“Break up?” asks Tom.
The instructor narrows her eyes at him, confused at his sudden interest in potential gossip. “Why do you want to know?”
He shrugs, pretending to be innocent. “I- he’s- I gotta know what’s going on with my fellow classmates when we’re in the air,” he sputters to say, being quick on his feet.
“Mm-hmm. It was a mutual break up, if you must know.”
 -
“What made you want to come out here tonight… you know now that I think about it. I still haven’t asked you for your name.”
He opens his mouth to respond when you place your finger over his lips, shutting him up for a second.
“And don’t say your call sign. I want to know your real name first at least.”
He nods, removing your hand. “Leonard, the name’s Leonard Wolfe and you better remember it, darlin’. My call sign’s Wolfman.”
“How’d you know my nickname?”
“What?”
“My nickname. You- did you seriously not know?” You ask with a giggle.
“You’re joking.”
“No, it’s practically my name at this point but that’s my nickname. I’ve had it since I was a little girl.”
He sets his arm on the back of the booth behind you, scooting closer. “Well then, I’d say it’s a good thing that I met you.”
“Someone’s cocky.”
“It’s all part of my charm.”
You fix his crooked collar. “I see and,” your look into his eyes, distracting him. “If either one of us, no one in particular, wants to continue this. Does that mean this… so called charm is code for your cocky all the time?”
“I am offended at that-”
It’s a blur.
Once his vision clears and he sees what you’ve done. He raises a brow, “you realize what that means right?”
You lean in, staring at his lips for a little too long (and a little too obviously). “Do you realize what this means?”
His brows knit together in confusion, “now I’m confused.”
“Well, let me clear this up for you. I’m wearing your hat.”
He nods.
“I plan on seeing you again. We’ll go back to your place because- well, I’m not talking to Charls about this tonight. And I wanted to see how cute I’d look in this.”
He focuses on that for a moment, the hand on the back of the booth cups your cheek, his breath fans against your ear. “You’d look better if you had nothing on except for my hat.”
Before you can respond he’s on you faster than a surfer trying to catch a wave.
A muffled surprised yelp escapes you until you two slowly get in the groove with kissing one another.
The whistling and hollering breaks you two out of it.
He sighs, glancing over his shoulder at the assholes who’ve ruined his night.
Charlotte shakes her head at you.
He throws his head back, resting against the seat of the booth.
“Did you drive here?”
“Yeah.”
“You want to head out and grab something to eat?”
“You really are an angel, Darlin’.”
“You’re just saying that.”
He shakes his head, “believe me when I say it. You are an angel and I’m taking you out tonight and the next night then the night after that.”
“So, you’ll be keeping me out past my bedtime.”
“You won’t be getting much sleep in the first place.” He slips out of the booth, yanking you with him.
“Woah! Slow down there, Dogboy.”
“We’ve got places to go and beds to not sleep in. There is no rest!”
You throw your head back and laugh. “Oh, wait- wait!”
“What?”
“Just give me one second.” You turn and wave your arm like a crazy woman, “bye, Charls!”
-
She scrunches her neck, not looking up from the table.
“You should say by to your friend before she gets the whole bar involved,” Tom advises.
“Shut up.”
Nick takes the initiative and waves with the same enthusiasm. “Bye, mean lady!”
“Bye Mother Goose!”
“Damn,” he mumbles.
“Bye, She wolf!” Ron, Rick, and Tim wave at you.
-
That happy smile doesn’t slip from your lips as you two exit the bar.
“Aw.”
“What’s wrong?” Leonard asks you.
“I was expecting your ride to be a horse,” you joke.
He growls, pulling you closer by your waist. “You keep joking like that and I’ll give you something ride.”
You peck his lips with a happy smile dancing across your lips, “keep that promise for later. I’m famished.”
“Yes, ma’am.”

The guys all have a work past with Viper
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He takes a seat at the counter, minding his own business as he reads a menu.
You smile as you walk inside, you always love coming here and not just because you get to see Penny and Pete, your favorite couple at the restaurant but because you get to make your waffle buildings.
‘Maybe today I’ll build a hut. Oh, and for the steam we can use coffee.’
Penny notices there’s a little pep in your step while she hands you a menu. “How are you doing, Butterfly?”
You giggle, “I’m doing just fine.”
She smiles and tells you your table is free.
He sees you enter the restaurant, sitting down in one of the empty booths in the middle of the row.
Penny turns around filling another customer’s coffee, she notices the looks he’s sending your way and needs to stop it before things can progress, you don’t need any more heartache (even if you don’t remember it today).
It would also save him from meeting your dad, who’s in charge of the port, Viper aka Mike or your cousin, Iceman aka Tom.
“I wouldn’t,” she tells him.
He furrows his brows and turns towards the waitress. “I’m sorry, what did you say?”
“You’ll only find yourself heartbroken if you try to pursue her.”
“What makes you say that?”
She purses her lips; she doesn’t find it necessary to tell him of your accident. But then she realizes he’s new and must be one of the few new cowboys that came into town.
“You’re gone for more than half of the year doing what you do. You’ve never met her but if you did and it was time to leave both of you would be crushed. Imagine how much that for a second.”
“Maybe she’d come with me.”
“She-” She sighs at the wound of glass breaking. “Excuse me while I go kick my husband out of the kitchen.”
“I didn’t do it on purpose, Pen.”
“Out of the kitchen, Maverick," a new voice says.
He doesn't know it, but it was the actual cook, Marcus.
He sighs, pushing the doors open, taking a seat beside the man. “Sounds like you did good there.”
The dejected man chuckles, “yeah.”
“Hey. You happen to know that girl sitting in the booth, would you?”
Pete glances over his slumped shoulder. “What’s it to you?”
“Woah. Woah. Why is everyone so aggressive? I was just asking a question.”
“A question that shouldn’t be asked.”
“Okay. Message received.”
“You seem like the type who won’t take no for an answer?”
Leonard chuckles, “am I really that transparent?” He chuckles to himself as he takes a sip of his coffee until he turns back to look at Pete and realizes how serious this whole thing is. “Oh, shit. Sorry, I just thought-”
“She wouldn’t go for a guy like you,” a voice says sitting on the other side of the rancher.
The two men angle their bodies to hear the man better.
Pete gives him a sarcastic smile. “Yeah, thanks for that, Cougar. We don’t need to give it any more ideas.”
“First off, it has a name and oh, she’s trying to make a door.”
The two look back and focus on you trying to get the finishing touches to your waffle house done.
He debates on walking over to you after hearing everyone’s warnings.
Clearly no one here wants to see anything bad happen to you if they’re this willing to stop him before he could try anything.
He pushes himself out of the chair, grabs a toothpick before heading over to you.
“Hey,” he starts off not to startle you entirely before sticking the toothpick in place, opening and closing the door to show you how well it works. “I thought this might help you a little more.”
You glance up at him, giving him a smile. “Well, then I guess the only thing I can say is thank you. To be honest, it probably would have taken me five minutes to figure it out, so again, I thank you for saving me from any potential embarrassment.”
Leonard lifts his hat, “I always do what I can to help a beautiful lady such as yourself.”
“Ah, I bet you say that to everyone you see then.”
He chuckles. This certainly isn’t what he was expecting when he walked over, it's different, nice even. “May I,” he gestures to the empty side of the booth.
“Please, I’d like to look a little less pathetic in front of, well everyone here.”
“I don’t think that’s possible.”
“You flatter girls to get them in your bed and expect that very thing to happen, don’t you?”
“Uh- well,” he stutters.
You shrug, “doesn’t matter now. I’m just happy to have some company even if it’s just for a minute or two.”
“Well, then I’m happy to be of service.”
You dazzle him with another smile.
This is different from the other times he's gone out with girls.
You lift your watch to check the time. “Oh, looks like it's time for me to go. Sorry,” you sheepishly shrug as you reach for your bag.
“Uh- oh, okay. Yeah, I guess it’s time I went back to work.”
You get up and barely walk past him when you stop. “Is that you?”
“Is what me?”
“The farm smell?”
His mouth opens into an “o” making it obvious he now knows what you’re talking about. “Oh, yeah. Perks of being a rancher. Sorry about the smell. I didn’t realize it was so bad.”
You shake your head. “No, it’s- it’s not that. It’s just- it's more of a comfort thing. It reminds me of my family because my dad and my cousin are in the ranching business, and this is- the smell of, well the farm, is basically what I grew up with.”
He nods, “okay, good to know I don’t smell too much like shit.”
You chuckle, shaking your head. “Happy to help but I seriously have to go now.”
“Okay.”
You head over to Penny and pay her before saying bye to everyone.
Leonard shakes his head once he sees your car leave. “She sure is something else.” He then heads over to his car, sneakily watching you leave.

He spends the night talking to Rick, watching his kids. “So, you gonna ask her out?”
“Me?” Leonard shakes his head, pulling Rick’s youngest, Javy, away from the fence before his beloved (crazy) goat comes over and towards the edge to scare the kids.
The rancher isn't going to have his headbutting, crossed eyed goat injure another one of his friends' kids (even if it's on them because they didn't listen). “I- no.”
“You like her?”
The kids’ “ooh” at their dad’s comment.
“What? No. She’s just- she’s... busy?”
“Excuses.” He pushes himself off the fence, “come on kids. Your uncle needs alone time to process the fact that he’s a wimp.”
The kids mumble wimp under their breaths as they walk by.
He’s left alone with his thoughts.
-
“Did she get offered any drugs today?” Mike asks his nephew.
Tom shakes his head, “no and you know she wouldn’t take anything anyway.”
“She wouldn’t know.”
The blond glances over at the older man.
“Don’t give me that look boy.”
Neither of them says anything else as they go their separate ways before going out to the garage so they can repaint the wall.
Nick and Carole walk to the open space, "hey guys."
"Do you know what got her in such a happy mood today?" Mike asks.
The couple glance at one another.
"When we went to get food, Penny said that one of the new ranchers came in and talked to her, but I don't know what happened," Carole tells him.
"A new rancher?"
She nods. "Yeah, he's the only one here who wears his hat twenty-four seven."
"And you don't know anything about this?" Tom asks Nick.
The mustached man narrows his eyes at him, "if we knew anything else we would have told you."
"I'm just checking, mother Goose. No need to get your p-"
Mike smacks his nephew on the back of his head. "Stop it. Nick take another roll and again, thank you for the food, Carole. If you could just-"
"Set it on the counter for later, I'd be happy to."
"How's life been with the baby?"
"It's been great. I know it makes her sad that we can't bring him around here. All they've wanted since they were kids was for their kids to be friends and hangout all the time."
Mike sighs, "yeah."
Carole sneaks up the stairs to check on you. She barely opens the door and sees you standing there, a smile breaks across her face. She's happy to know that you're safe and sound for another day.
-
The next day is a weird one... for Leonard.
He had no idea what was going to happen when he made his way to the restaurant, and he most certainly wasn’t expecting you to not remember him (and mean it).
Sure, he’s had a few girls say they don’t remember him but after some persuading and mentions of certain clues, they break, this time with you though, not so much.
A few minutes passed after you ran out until someone explained to him why he shouldn’t continue doing what he’s doing.
“Everyone knows but,” Penny sighs. “She was in an accident that killed her mom and left her with what the doctors believe to be permanent brain damage.”
That is the last thing Leonard was expecting to learn about you. “All those light threats make sense now.”
“Now that you know, are you going to keep trying to date her?” Penny asks him. "Because if you’re not and you break her heart, you can just leave now. We won’t tolerate that kind of behavior.”
He nods and finishes his coffee, coming up with a few ideas.
-
Rick lounges on his couch, as usual, and watches as his friend jots down a few things. “You must really like this girl if you’re so willing to do just about anything for her.”
Leonard shrugs, “I don’t think that’s it.”
“Well, you’re doing something really nice for her, someone you’ve met a few times. As for me, your best friend barely gets a birthday card.”
“You’ve been giving yourself your own gift every year.”
“Oh, yeah and what’s that?”
“Your kids.”
“Damn, you’re good.”
-
He sits at the counter in front of the kitchen, waiting for you to come in so he can ask to eat with you.
You enter, at the same time as always, greeting Penny and Pete before sitting down to look at the menu.
He stands up and walks over to you, “hey, is this seat taken?”
You look up from the menu, “yeah, that’s my boyfriend's seat.”
“Oh, it is?”
You nod, “and he won’t be happy to know that some random guy sat there while talking to his girlfriend.”
“What if we say we’re just friends?”
“Are we though? I mean, I don’t even know your name.”
“Leonard.”
“I wasn’t asking. Look, I gotta go.”
Everyone hears the commotion outside and runs out to see what’s happening, Penny and Leonard being the fastest to get outside when they hear your voice.
“It’s not- it’s October thirteenth.”
Nick slams his car door closed before rushing over, wrapping his arms around you, wanting to give you some kind of protection.
Leonard takes a step forward, ready to tell the cop everything when Penny gets to him first.
Pete grabs the cowboy, “you and Goose are gonna take her home. She needs to be with her family right now. She needs comfort.”
He nods, taking his words into consideration.
The boys get you into the car, but the ride home is a blur, you don’t even know if you’ve responded to Leonard.
-
Your father and cousin are outside before you know it.
"What happened?" Mike asks, taking in your state of distress.
Nick looks up at the older man with sad eyes. "She found out again."
He closes his eyes, rubbing his chin.
Tom comes to your other side, the two men helping you inside.
The mustached man stops the rancher before he could step any further onto his front porch. "I'm gonna have to stop you right there."
Leonard furrows his brows. "What do you mean?"
"You being here isn't good for her."
"What does that mean?"
"This is something we've done before. You have never been involved."
"How would you know?"
"You don't know her, and you don't need to concern yourself with her. I'm asking you once and only once. It's time for you to go."
The man turns around, not even waiting to see if he's going to walk away.
Nick peaks through the window, whispering, "what are you doing?"
Leonard rushes closer. "He kicked me out."
"He doesn't want her to be more heartbroken than she is. Are you here for her or for you?"
"What- why are you asking?"
"If you're here because you want to date her, I'll let you in. If not, you can turn your sorry ass around."
He didn't even have to hesitate. "Open the door."
The blond smiles and lifts the windowpane higher. "You said you'd open the door."
"I'd like to not have my ass kicked too bad, thank you."
He rolls his eyes and crawls through, listening to your cries as you listen to what you went through again.
"Can we- I want to talk to the doctor." You quietly hiccup, "I'm sure I've already talked to him but let me go again. Please?" You ask your father.
He nods and you all are off to the facility you were in for some time after your accident.
-
"It's the same thing I've told you before," Dr. Simpson finishes.
You nod, "I'm sure you have, and I appreciate you taking the time to explain it to me again."
Leonard and Nick were stuck talking to one of the patients, (ten second) Sam.
"Hi, I'm Sam."
They nod and introduce themselves to him and continue to do so until Tom grabs them by their collars, hauling them out of the building.
"You two idiots wanted to stay. Stop getting distracted."
-
Once you got home, you decided to go to your room and write in your journal, needing to process everything.
"Would it- could I go talk to her?"
Mike silently nods.
"Go get 'em, tiger."
Nick averts his gaze your dad's stern look.
-
He knocks on the door, waiting for you to answer as he removes his hat.
The door swings open.
You stare at him through your lashes. "What do you want?"
"To talk. Check on you."
"I'm fine. Go home. I'd say I'll talk to you tomorrow, but I'll forget you by midnight." You walk back into your room, leaving the door open.
He takes that as an invitation and enters. "I- uh-"
"I don't want you to feel like you have to stay after everything you’ve learned. I would understand if you didn't want to talk anymore."
"No!" He nearly screams before realizing his mistake and sits down. "I mean, I don't mind it. This- your twenty-four-hour memory is no problem. I- I actually think you're worth getting to know, every day."
You don't give him a verbal response as you nod, unsure of how to respond.
As you two bask in the silence, the other's downstairs are preparing for the next day.
-
“You coming to the garage or are you going to call Carole?” Tom asks him after his uncle walks out of the room.
“What do you think?”
Your cousin rolls his eyes, “still as lazy as the day I met you.”
“Hey, I am offended.”
“Good.”
Nick shakes his head, mumbling a variety of comebacks that he would never say out loud because he values his life.
-
Leonard reaches around, rubbing your shoulder, not realizing the time or what’s about to happen.
You wake, opening your eyes and start screaming, alerting everyone in the house.
Tom and Mike make it to your room in no time.
The older man hauls the rancher out of your room and out of the house. “I thought I told you to stay away.”
“You might have.”
“Then why aren’t you?”
“Sir, I really care about your daughter and honestly, the thought of showing her how much I care about her everyday sounds-”
“Like you’ve got some kind of ulterior motive.”
“That hurts. No, I mean, telling her every day that I care for her and making her fall for me again and again. I can’t explain it but, I know I’m the right guy for her. Everyone here cares for her and I’d like to count myself lucky enough to be a part of that community. I know you think I’m messing with her but that’s not true and even if you push me away, I will still be here and continue to stand by her.”
Mike has a lot to think about now.
He nods, “don’t come around today. She needs time to heal and take it all in, you hear me?”
“Yes, sir.”
“I’m sure I'll hear from you later. Now go.”
Leonard smiles as he leaves. He spends the day making a gift, as a precaution he doesn’t come by for a couple of days.
Leonard has a lot of things to think about.
If he stays and builds a relationship with you, he’s going to be putting his dreams on the back burner; something he’s had his mind set on for a long, long time now.
Can he, do it?
Is it worth it?
As much as it hurts him to think about, he needs to. But then he thinks of you again and it is.
He makes a mental note to email his response.
-
He knocks on the door and Tom answers it. “You’re back? I thought you decided to leave.”
The rancher shakes his head, “nope. Can’t get rid of me that easily. I- uh- I actually made something and I want to play it for her. I don’t know if it’ll help but, you never know.”
He steps aside, giving Leonard enough room to walk by.
“Thanks.”
You and your father enter the living room, seeing him placing the tape in the VHS player.
The tape plays before either of you could ask what's going on.
Your name flashes across the screen, drawing your attention along with mentions of the accident and Bradley, Carole and Nick's son who's four now.
You touch the scar hidden by your hair.
Tom stands back, waiting for what you decide to do.
Mike rubs his hand across his face. "Did you do this?"
He nods. "I did."
You take a deep breath and grab his arm, bringing him with you.
-
"Where are we going?"
You don't answer him.
"Should I be worried?"
You stop in front of your car. "Do you ever shut up?"
"I could."
"Do it now."
"Stop being mean to me or I swear I'm gonna fall in love with you."
You roll your eyes. "I need to talk to you, and I don't want to do it with my guard dogs nearby."
"Oh, sure."
He opens the door for you, earning a furrowed brow look from you.
You don't say anything as you drive to the one place no one knows about.
"Are we-"
"The accident site, yeah. I didn’t know that at the time but now that I do, it doesn't change the special value it holds."
"That's good." He turns to you, seeing the way you're staring at him. "What?"
"We need to end this."
"End what?"
"You know what."
"Honestly, I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Leonard-"
He cuts you off before you can continue. "You remember my name?"
"If you'd let me get a word in, you'd know that the only reason I know of you is because I have a journal. I've been keeping notes of everything, I just- I never realized it."
"And that means we need to not see each other anymore?"
"Exactly."
"Why?"
"You."
"I'm not following."
"You," you close your eyes, huffing through your nose. "You're so sweet and have been since we first met but you're going to get hurt."
"What makes you think that?"
"You've stayed longer than any guy ever has but to do this every day is just- I know it's a lot."
"It's nothing."
"See, that!" You point at him. "That right there is exactly why I'm ending this. You've got such a pure heart and I can't be the reason it breaks when you realize it's not worth it to stay."
"Who's to say that I'll stop feeling what I do?"
You avoid eye contact as your tears blur your vision. "You will, just like I know how my father and Tom are tired of it. They'll never admit it, but everyone has their breaking point and I think us meeting and seeing each other has pushed theirs. I'm really sorry, I like you. I do but I'm doing this to protect us."
You offer him a weak smile as the tears spill from your eyes and down your cheeks.
Before you leave to go back inside, you hand him your journal.
He pulls you back and kisses you.
Your first kiss with one another and it's amazing but can't last forever.
You pull away, walking inside with heavy steps; barely able to keep yourself together.
Tom nor Mike stops you, but they do make sure to call Nick and Carole, knowing you'll need a good day tomorrow even if you don't remember it.
-
Leonard doesn't come into the diner for a few days.
Carole sits with you at your job while Rick, Nick, and Pete drive Mike and Tom to see him off.
"What are you guys doing here?"
"We couldn't let you leave without saying goodbye," Rick tells him.
"That's nice but how do you know these guys?" Leonard points between the guys in the group.
"We used to work together before I decided to settle down," his friend explains.
"Is that what you've been telling people?" Pete asks, staring at the man with a confused expression.
Rick glances at the man, "what are you talking about? Of course, that's what I've been telling people. It's the truth."
Pete shrugs, "I just thought-"
"Thought what?"
Nick smacks the two across the back of their heads. "Alright you idiots, there's a time and a place to talk about this. Now is not it."
The two grumbled, rubbing the now sore spot.
"We came here to talk to Wolfman before he left."
"You told them?"
"We all worked for him," Rick points to Mike. "Of course, I'm going to tell them."
"Anyway," the oldest chimes in. "We're here to send you off but not before giving you this." He hands him a CD.
"Really?" The rancher asks, not understanding the sentimental thought behind it just yet.
Mike nods, "I think you'll like it. Check side B, song four. Everything will make sense after that." The older man walks away, letting the others take their time in following.
Nick pats Leonard on the back, saluting him before wishing him luck. "I wish you luck, my friend."
"I'm pretty sure you just jinxed me."
"That's for the theater and you're going to need it one way or another."
The rancher frowns.
Pete chuckles, "you really leaving?"
The blond shrugs. "What else can I do? She told me she doesn't want me, and I can't force myself into her life, you know. Whether she remembers me or not. I'm going to respect her decision."
"That's really nice of you, not everyone would do that."
"I keep telling you I'm not like everyone."
"And I understand why. You're going to do great, kid."
The man in the cowboy hat purses his lips as his brows knit together in confusion. "If I'm not mistaken, we're the same age."
"Potato, potahtoe."
"Not the same."
Pete smirks and slaps his arm before jogging to Mike's car.
"You really want to leave?" Rick asks, standing beside him, resting his arms on the fence. "Because I'm not buying this whole "I can do this" thing. I mean, from what I've heard it sounds like you love her but who am I to assume."
Leonard shakes his head, "you heard wrong."
"That's a load of bull and you know it."
"You'll never know."
"The kids are going to miss you."
"They'll find something else to occupy them."
“You know they won’t.”
“Whatever you say, man.”
Rick’s hand hovers over his friend’s shoulder, he doesn’t pat him like everyone else had (knowing he’ll be back in no time). “You’re an idiot.”
Leonard lets out a dry, “thanks.”
Tom gives him a knowing look, “you know I’m right.”
“If you’re just going to be a jerk, leave with the others. I don’t want to talk to you.”
“You said you were going to stay by her side no matter what. What happened to that guy?”
“She made the decision. She doesn’t want me around; thinks she’s going to save me from heartache or something.”
“You’re an idiot.” Tom walks away, leaving him with his thoughts.
Leonard shakes his head, not understanding half of what just happened; all he knows is that he’s offended. He hops in his truck, his heart heavy and mind full of useless thoughts; he places the CD in the car player.
Half forgetting he’s had the damn thing this whole time and never once thought to use it. He skips to the song Mike told him to play.
He’s barely on the road for ten minutes and gets out of his thoughts, his fingers stop tapping along to the beat on the steering wheel when he slams on the brakes. “Holy shit! Holy- no way. No way!”
His smile is as wide as can be. “I knew the old man liked me.”
He turns the car around and heads towards the office you visited when you were told about the accident again.
-
He runs through the door, trying to sneak in by the security guards before anyone can kick him out.
“Hey, where do you think you’re going?” He turns to face them, removing his hat.
He shrugs, not saying a word.
Maybe playing dumb would be easier?
The taller of the two stares at him with raised brows as his partner takes in Leonard’s appearance. “Go on in.”
Ron turns to Charles, “what’s wrong with you? What if he was a murderer or some psycho?”
“Did he look like a psycho to you?”
“No but-”
“But nothing. I got good vibes from him.”
“What did you smoke for breakfast?”
“I’m not answering that,” Charles says, checking the computer for today’s schedule.
“If someone gets murdered, I’m not protecting you.”
“Dick move.”
“Cya, man.”
“What?”
Ron pats his shoulder, “cover your ass. I’d remember that if I were you.”
-
Leonard runs into the room, eyes scanning all around and over anyone in the room, only to not find you, for the moment.
He wanders further into the room, tempted to ask around when he sees ten second Sam and decides not to, there’s too much time that could be wasted and he can’t waste a second right now.
You turn the corner, not noticing him as you help someone outline the outline of their sketch.
A voice calls out to you, and you turn, finding him.
“Hi? Do you- nevermind, stupid question. Could I- uh- could I talk to you for a minute?” He asks.
You know everyone here will be fine for a few minutes. You hesitate to answer him. “I- we can- just- just follow me.”
-
You two stand in your special art room. “Have we met before?”
His chin juts out. “What?” His eyes wander around the room, finally understanding.
“As you can see, I’ve seen you before. I mean, I know I’ve talked to you, but I don’t remember it. You- you haunt my dreams. I’ve seen us in my favorite restaurant, as if we were on a date and- and I don’t know if it was real or not.” He can see how it’s wracking your brain to try and remember something that won’t be there.
He nods, “we have. We’ve met a few times.”
“That’s all you’re going to say?”
He holds a journal in front of you, “if you really want to find out, read this. It’ll tell you everything.”
You stare at the cover, wondering if you should read it or not.
You hold it close to your chest and stretch your hand out for him. “Hi.”
He raises his brow but shakes your hand. “Hi?”
“We’re starting over.”
“Oh, that makes more sense.”
The door opens, “Hi, “I’m Sam.”
You purse your lips, trying to hold in your laughter.
“And our special moment has a little twist.”
“Leave Sam out?”
He nods, “we’re leaving him out.”
You nod and slowly remove your hand from his. “Hi, I’m Sam.”
“I swear to-”
-
You push open the door and cover your eyes when the sun hits you. Leonard turns around and smiles at the sight of you looking as beautiful as always. “Hey, you’re up.”
You nod, your eyes landing on your precious baby boy, Jake, pretending to be like his dad with ranching.
“How are you feeling this morning?”
Your daughter, Natasha, runs over to you with her arms open for a hug.
Everyone always says that a mother and her child share a special bond, in this case it’s true because you open your arms and scoop her up, holding her close to you, even if it is a little strange just finding out she’s your daughter after watching the video Leonard made for you.
“I’m okay, a little weird this morning.”
“I don’t blame you.”
You tilt your head up at him, staring at him like you’re trying to memorize his face. “I think Tom’s doing things he shouldn’t.”
He turns around, finding your cousin doing the exact opposite of what he told him to and hands Jake to your father so he can help your cousin from messing up his ranch (any more than he already has). “Son of a-”
“Language!” You and Mike shout.
“I wasn’t going to actually say it,” Leonard tells you two.
You and your dad share a look. “He’s your husband, you take care of it.” And he walks away.
“So rude,” you mumble to yourself.
“Hey guys!” Nick and Carole wave as Bradley runs towards Natasha (who hasn’t left your side until this moment).
You smile and wave back, hugging Carole tightly.
“Let's go inside and see what you have in your kitchen for breakfast.”
You lean in closer to her, whispering, “does he ever eat? I swear he is always raiding my pantry.”
“Fast metabolism.”
“I don’t buy it.”
“Can I tell you something?” She asks.
You nod.
“Neither do I.”
-
You, Carole, and Nick grimace at the sight of Leonard's friend and his coworker-
"Can they eat each other's faces somewhere else?" Nick mumbles. "I'm trying to eat here."
You and her share a look.
"You're still eating," his wife points out.
He shrugs. "I can't pass up when Sundown cooks. That'd be like disrespecting Penny."
Leonard walks through the door and grimaces. "You two need to stop trying to eat each other and enjoy breakfast. This is not what I imagined when I suggested you two go out."
Charlotte and Rick part from one another, offering weak apologies.
You and Carole can't help but laugh.
The rancher turns around at the sound of your laughter and knows that he wouldn’t trade this for the world.

Thick Gloves and Bloody Mouth Pieces
Tumblr media
Pairing: Leonard “Wolfman” Wolfe (Henry “Wolfman” Ruth) x Fem!reader
Characters: Fem!reader, Dick Rick (bad trainer), Leonard “Wolfman” Wolfe (Henry “Wolfman” Ruth), Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, Ron “Slider” Kerner, Rick “Hollywood” Neven
Warnings: Dramatic (I don’t know where any of the theatrics came from but I’m rolling with the punches), Rick the trainer is a dick (maybe not so much here but in my mind, he is), Tom and others tease reader, reader and Leonard are adorable idiots
Word Count: 2,894
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You know you shouldn’t be here right now, not when you should be at home getting for- you don’t even want to think about the date right now.
Especially not when Leonard looks so cute in his non-official uniform, a jacket that has a zipper and gym shorts or as you like to call them basketball shorts (followed by innocent teasing from Leonard and Ron mostly, although the latter takes it further by making jokes about you two getting together which somehow manage to go over the former’s head).
Your eyes wander around the room, checking on the others, making sure no one needs anything like water or a first aide care. There have been too many times when that’s happened plus, you’re the only one who can even do a proper stitch.
You inwardly groan at the sight of Dick Rick.
Sometimes you wonder why he couldn’t have been named something else because you guys already have a Rick and he has a much cooler nickname, Hollywood (not given to him by you, thank God he’ll always say during his interviews).
You pretend like you don’t see him and let him sit near you.
Even knowing he’s sitting there beside you pisses you off, good thing no one likes him. Honestly, the only reason he got the job was because he has the qualifications… and his uncle is the one in charge of this whole thing, but everyone can admit that he genuinely does have what it takes to be here and that’s ALL you give him credit for.
The new fighters always wonder what he did to make you hate him so much and then they hear him open his mouth and some understand while others join in.
Now, usually you’d have one of the guys sitting with you (more like babysitting you) but today, no one could because they have a fight they need to train for.
You’re on the edge of your seat watching as Leonard practices, always giving everything, he’s got no matter what. “Kill ‘em!”
“Ease up on the coaching there.” (Fake) Rick advises. “He’s got enough to worry about right now. We don’t need you trying to get into his head.”
Your head snaps over in his direction. “You know what I think? I think that you’re actually worried that your uncle is gonna lose out on big win and making me seem like I’m the bad guy is your way of coping with it, which isn’t gonna get you very far. All I’m doing is supporting him. Now, either you shut up or lose it.”
He opens his mouth to say something, but you cut him off.
“Listen here, Dick. I’m going to cheer him on. I will be screaming as loud as the other people in the crowd. I get this is practice, but I am proud of him, and I will show it any time I can. Either you shut up or I do it for you.”
He stares at you with his every day sour expression. “The names Richard-”
“Dick can be short for Richard. Think about Dick’s sporting goods, a place you don’t own, so sad.” Was it necessary to bring that up, no. Did it feel good, hell yeah.
“I prefer Rick and they’re practicing. Tonight’s the big night so you’re “supportive” screaming isn’t helping anyone.”
You raise your brows, “I say otherwise because he’s doing a real good job right now.”
He doesn’t need to look over at Leonard and Tom, he knows they’re doing good. “It’s practice. You don’t need to scream.”
“I'm going to scream as loud as I want because he’s a good fighter and I am going to show it.”
“I understand what you’re saying but-”
“But nothing. I’m gonna go check on him and our friends because this conversation is going nowhere and you’re pissing me off.”
Dick Rick doesn’t try to argue with you knowing this is the smartest thing to do.
-
You get out of the chair and head over towards Leonard (who exited the ring right before you started to walk over) and Tom who sits in the chairs closest to the ring, sweat dripping down their heaving chests. “You two did good today.”
“You mean, he looked good, and you assume I did good because you were too focused on screaming for him,” says Tom before he drinks some water.
You scoff, glancing over at a non-focused Leonard, “someone is totally, not completely off?”
The man with frosted tips raises a brow. “Everyone but dogboy knows you’re horny for him.”
Your eyes widen, “what the hell?” You smack his shoulder. “Don’t say that.”
He chuckles, “am I wrong?”
“Shut up,” you walk away and head over towards their boxing partners, Ron and Rick.
-
“You two feeling alright?”
Ron lifts his head, staring at you.
“Has anyone come over to check that out?” You point to the blood trail on the edge of his eyebrow closest to his temple.
“Yeah,” he says.
“He’s lying and you know it.”
You take the first aid kit from Rick. “Yeah, yeah.” You grab the items you need and start by cleaning the wound.
“He’s staring.” Ron hisses, you mumble an apology.
“He’s preparing for the fight.”
“He’s staring at you,” the two say.
“Why do I even bother trying to fight you two anymore?” You finish with the wound and start cleaning up.
“You ever gonna tell him?” asks Ron.
“If I haven’t told him and I’ve known him for- God- as long as I can remember-”
“Hasn’t it been more than five years?” asks Ron.
“Thank you, Mister know it all.” Your brows furrow together, “how do you know that?”
“He won’t shut up about you. Plus, you showed up around the time he did.”
“That seems like it could be true.”
“Could be?” He scoffs, “it is true, and you know it.” He pushes himself off the bench and walks over to where Tom is.
“He’s not wrong, you know,” Rick informs you. Always the one to tell you the truth when it comes to this kind of thing (plus it’d be nice [for all the guys] if the two of you got together).
“If what you’re all saying is true, then why hasn’t he said anything?”
He doesn't think he heard you correctly. You’ve never agreed with them or even thought about the possibility of Leonard liking you to be true. “What was that?”
You shake your head, grabbing the first aid kit, “nothing. I’ve- Dick Rick pissed me off today and I’m not making sense so I’m gonna go.”
“Come on, don’t be like that.”
“How else am I supposed to be, Hollywood? I mean… seriously, if he hasn’t said anything by now, even when all you guys say is how much he likes me. Why hasn’t he tried to ask me out?”
He shrugs, “maybe-uh- maybe he thinks you’re not interested.”
“Do you honestly think that’s why?”
He struggles to give you a response. “Yeah, I didn’t think so. Look, I’ve got to go.”
“Wait- where are you going?”
You huff, the strand of hair blocking your view moves off to the side of your face. “I’ve got to go. I- I didn’t tell anyone but I have a date tonight and I wasn’t going to go on it but now I think I will. Maybe see where things take us, you know.”
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?”
“I’m all out of good ideas when it comes to my love life but I’m ready to put myself out there and see what happens.”
He clearly doesn’t approve of this idea, but you could care less right now.
“I’ll be here for your guys’ fights, alright?”
He says nothing.
“Rick?”
He blinks, processing what you’ve said. “Yeah, yeah. Have fun.” He keeps an eye on you as you walk out.
-
He rushes over towards Leonard and smacks his arm.
The latter breaks out of his daze, rubbing his arm with a confused expression. “What the hell was that for?”
“Because you’re an idiot and everyone here can agree with that.”
“That’s not true.” Various “yes's” and “he’s not wrong” can be heard through out the area.
Leonard scoffs, “whatever.”
“You need to get off your horny butt and go after the woman you’ve been fawning over for the last thousand years.”
“You’re exaggerating.”
“What if I told you that she’s out on a date right now?”
“Is she?”
Rick shrugs, “you tell me.”
“Do you know with who?”
“She didn’t tell me that much.”
“What if she winds up really liking this guy?”
“That means you would miss your chance.”
He pushes himself out of the chair, “I have to go find her.”
“And then what?”
“What do you mean?”
“You mean to tell me, you’re gonna crash her date with absolutely no reason?”
“Well, I mean, technically, I have a reason… she’s gonna know right?”
“No because you haven’t given her any signs you moron.”
Leonard stops, taking a deep breath, “I’ve got to go, man. I can’t stand here and wait anymore.”
Rick chuckles, slapping his shoulder, “go man.”
-
You sip your drink, not at all enthralled by what your date is saying and no matter how many times you try to give your two cents, the man just… won’t… shut… up.
“And then he was like-”
A handful of flowers are shoved into your face. “I love you.”
You set the glass down and take the flowers, finding them to be one of the prettiest combos you’ve seen, sunflowers and roses.
“I love you,” he says again.
You turn to see your the cowboy. “Leonard? What are- what are you doing here?”
He opens his mouth to respond when your date interrupts him.
“I’m sorry, whoever you are, but we’re,” he gestures to the two of you. “On date here so if you could just go back to wherever your redneck ass came from, that’d be great.”
The man in the cowboy hat bends down to whisper in his ear.
Your dates eyes widen before he rushes to get out of his seat, practically tripping over the legs of the chair.
Leonard sits down in the, now, unoccupied chair with a cocky grin dancing across his lips. “What did you tell him?”
“Nothing much. A little “harmless” threatening.”
“What kind of threatening?”
He shrugs, avoiding your gaze, “harsh enough to ensure that he doesn’t come back… here… on a date with you… ever.”
Your jaw drops. “Wait- wait.” You remember he said something. “What did you say earlier?”
“I don’t want him to date you.”
“After that.”
“I threatened him.”
“No!” you set the flowers down on the table. “What did you say?”
He gulps, unsure if he should tell you again or not. “I- do I really have to repeat myself?”
“Please?” your tone wavers, thinking you may not have heard what you think he heard.
He smiles, reaching for your hand. “I- I think I made the dumbest mistake waiting to tell you this but, oh boy. Here it goes, I-" he looks around, seeing how many people are here. “Actually, could we do this outside?”
“If we do, will you ever tell me? Because when we need to have a serious conversation, it never happens, and it feels like you’ve shut down on me.”
He leans forward, rubbing his hands across his faces.
“Okay. Okay. Uh- there’s this- I- I’m having a real hard time trying to tell you this.”
“Let’s start with what you first said when you shoved these beautiful flowers in my face,” you say with a light chuckle.
He cracks a smile. “You caught that huh?”
“I think I did but I don’t know for sure if what I heard was the right thing.”
“Well, that- uh- that depends on your reaction to what I’m about to say.”
“I think we both know what we’ve been denying for so long.”
He leans closer, “and what’s that?”
“That you, cowboy, are completely as smitten with me like I am with you.” You pray he doesn’t turn you as doubt swirls around in your mind.
That crooked boyish grin takes over and that damned hat of his tips forward, covering his eyes. “That’s good to hear.”
“Why? Cause it means you didn’t crash my date for nothing.”
“Hey now. If I knew all I needed to do was this, I would have had Hollywood set you up a long time ago.”
“Like I would have accepted whoever he wanted to set me up with.”
“You... I think you would have.”
“He probably would’ve told me his plan and then tricked the both of us into meeting at the same place.”
He chuckles, “yeah, maybe.” He glances around, “how about we- uh- get out of here and go somewhere you’d actually enjoy.”
A teasing smiles stretches across your lips. “What if I like it here?”
“You don’t, I know it.”
A heavy sigh slips past your lips, “if we must.”
“I’ll make it worth your while.”
-
“I told you not to order so much,” you chuckle, munching on a couple of fries. You kick your legs, the cool air hitting the exposed skin of your lower legs.
He smiles, setting his burger down, wiping his face after you gestured to the mess on his chin. “You look really pretty by the way.”
“You sound like a middle schooler with a crush.”
“I’m just being honest, sweets.”
“We both know you have more to say.” You’re hopeful that he’ll just come out and say it again.
“Okay, maybe I do but I don’t want to scare you off.”
You scoff, “please.”
“Hey! I’d like to keep the woman I love close to me since I was on the verge of being too late and barely gained enough courage to ask her out tonight.”
You cover your mouth, preventing any more food from flying out as you cough.
He pats your back. “Are you okay?”
“You just,” you croak with a hoarse voice. “You just- just said the woman you love.”
“Oh,” he extends the word, finally realizing what he said to you (again).
You grab your drink and gulp as much as you can, wanting to get rid of your hoarse voice. “That’s what you said right?”
“Said what when?”
“Don’t mess with me like that, Leo. You know what you said.”
He gulps, taking a sip of his drink. “You’re right. I know what I said and I’m- I’m scared that you don’t feel the same.”
“If I didn’t feel the same, would I have accepted this date?”
“You’ve gone out with me before,” he points out with attitude.
You scoff, “because I thought that you were asking me out on a genuine date! But then there you were talking to some girl just a few feet away from me.”
“I’m sorry for thinking I never had a chance with you!”
“If you had asked, you would have known!” You set your food off the side, pushing yourself out of the truck bed. “I’m leaving. I can’t do this with you right now.”
“You can’t- you can’t do this with me right now? Seriously?”
You reach for your purse. “I’m not going to sit here and fight with you over how scared I was that you didn’t like me even though I’m in love with you and how much it hurt to see you talking to all those girls when you were the one who invited me to go out with you!” You’re too upset to even realize that he’s pushed himself off the truck bed.
He spins you around to kiss you only for it to end in laughter. The corner of his lips tugs upwards. “Are you really laughing at my romantic gesture right now?”
You chuckle, staring into his pretty eyes. “You know exactly what I’m laughing at.”
He nods, the hat bumping against your forehead once more, in a more affectionate manner. “That I do.”
You snatch the item off his head, tossing it beside the food. You take a deep breath, watching the way his eyes dip down towards your lips.
“This isn’t going to be as dramatic; you know?”
“Just kiss me you-” Your hands slid up his arms, fingers interlocking against the back of his neck. The warmth of his hand on your cheek and your hip causes the butterflies in your stomach to flutter harder than they ever have when you’re with him. You’re the first to pull away, eyes still closed enjoying this moment.
“Wow,” he breathes out. “I think I’m getting a hard on.”
Your eyes snap open, finding that he’s staring at you. The corner of your lips twitch (of course he would say that now), you finally understand what everyone else has been saying, eyes truly are the window to one’s soul because all you can see is the love, he holds for you. “Guess everyone was right.”
“What’s that?”
“We both fell for each other but didn’t want to admit and now,” you stare at the collar of his hoodie for a few seconds realizing what the boys are gonna do. “And now they’re gonna make fun of us.”
“Maybe, but then we can just do this,” he pulls you in for another kiss.
You chuckle against his lips.

Day 14: Die a hero or live long enough to become a villain ➣prompt: Desperate Measures ➣Character: Henry "Wolfman" Ruth ➣warnings: death, TOPGUN shit, dog fighting, missiles, guns ➣word count: 1.7k
|| masterlist || whumptober || whumptober masterlist || library page ||
Henry had a plan. He always had a plan, it was part of his jump as a RIO. He had to have a plan A-Z in case something went wrong. That’s what made him so good, and what gave him the ticket to TOPGUN with his pilot, Hollywood. But somewhere along the line, those plans that he had come up with on how to get win first at TOPGUN were thrown out the window when he fell for one of the other pilots.
He hadn’t even noticed she was there until she giggled at his hard-on joke to Hollywood. He had turned around and noticed her blushing. Wolfman then turned back to the front with a blush on his own cheeks. It wasn’t that he hadn’t ever talked to a woman before, it was that most of the women in his small town in Texas he had grown up with. But there was something different about her though. He knew that whatever he did, he couldn’t screw it up.
But somehow he managed to do exactly that. The very first day, he had pissed her off by saying something dumb in the locker room. He didn’t even know she was there until she slammed her door shut, and stormed out of the locker room. He sat up quickly from his spot on the bench, and caught a glimpse of her hair as she walked out. Hollywood let out a low whistle and laughed at his RIO.
“You fucked up, Wolf,” Hollywood laughed.
Later that night, Wolfman showed up at her door with flowers in his hand and his stetson on his head. She stared at him with a wild expression, her eyes looking at the white hat on his head. When Wolfman noticed her not saying anything, he quickly started talking, once again scraping the plan he had come up with in his head. He tensed when she stepped forward, but relaxed when she plucked the cowboy hat off his head and put it on her own.
“You uh know what you just did?” He asked her.
“Sure do,” She smiled, “Now. . . you going to stand there dazed and confused or come in?”
Since that night, the two of them had been inseparable. Everyone quickly knew that Bronco was off limits when she walked in with Wolfman’s white stetson on her head, and sat down next to her RIO. She could hear the comments behind her, but didn’t let them both her. That was probably the best thing about her, she didn’t care what others said.
Wolfman’s next plan was to propose to her. He knew that it might’ve been a little too soon, only having known each other for 10 weeks, but he had never been so sure about something in his life (other than joining the Navy). His plan was to do it after TOPGUN graduation. Y/N had placed second, right behind Iceman and Slider. Wolfman was fourth behind Maverick. Wolfman beamed with pride as Viper announced Bronco’s name at second place, and could see the shy smile on her features. She knew that she was rightfully in third, still considering Mav and Goose to be ahead of her.
When they were dismissed and could begin drinking and partying, Wolfman stood up and walked over to her. They had managed to hide their relationship from the command team the whole time, knowing that if they found out they would be kicked out. Y/N was laughing with Iceman and Slider, when Wolfman walked over to them. Iceman whispered something in Y/N’s ear, and she looked over her shoulder to see Wolfman walking over to her with a bright smile.
“Hey, congrats,” Wolfman said and hugged her.
“Thank you, Wolf,” Y/N smiled.
“Can I steal you for a-”
“I hate to end the celebration early but we have a crisis situation that needs our attention,” Viper said, getting everyone's attention. Y/N and Wolfman shared a look before going over to where Jester and Viper were.
“Iceman, Slider,” Jester said, reading out names and handing out orders, “Wolfman, Hollywood. . . Bronco.
“Here, sir,” Bronco said, taking her orders from Jester. Wolfman gently squeezed her hip as she ripped open the letter and read it. It was the exact same as the one Hollywood held in his hands, “So much as a day off.” She smiled up at Wolfman, “Come by later?” Wolfman nodded and gave her hip one more squeeze before walking off with Hollywood.
But Wolfman’s plans were once again scrapped, due to the pilots having to leave that night to get to the middle of the Indian ocean. He saw Bronco sitting on the opposite side of the helicopter, looking tired as ever as she watched the never ending ocean. Once they landed, it was straight to their quarters for much needed sleep. The next day he only saw glimpses of her as they were briefed on the mission, and what they were to do. She was to fly solo, as her RIO was needed back on the ship for radio comms.
“Whatever you’re planning, quit thinking it through so much,” Hollywood said as they were getting ready to go to the flight deck for pre-flight.
“What do you mean?” Wolfman asked.
“You have been planning something for the past couple days. I can tell, you are weirdly quiet. But quit trying to plan something perfect. Just go for it,” Hollywood explained, “She’s over there.”
Wolfman looked across the flight deck and watched as she did her pre-flight check. Wolfman took a deep breath and walked across the deck towards her. Hollywood was right, he couldn’t keep waiting for the perfect moment to execute his plan. There was never going to be a perfect time, not with the crazy lives they lived.
“Bronco!” Wolfman called out as he ran up to her.
“Yeah?” Bronco said, handing her helmet to her warrant officer. Wolfman didn’t hesitate to wrap his arms around her waist and pull her in for a kiss. She squeaked in surprise but kissed him back, before realizing where she was. She put her hands on his chest and pushed him back softly, “What are you-”
“Marry me?”
“What?! Henry, we are about to-”
“Please, marry me?” Henry asked, and pulled away from her, and got down on one knee. She looked around and noticed some of the crew looking over at them, “I have been waiting for the right time, you know how I am with planning things, but I couldn’t get the timing and I-”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“Yes, you fool! I’ll marry you!” She smiled, and Wolfman stood up from the ground and hugged her again. He grabbed her face and kissed her, “Mmm, now go! We have a mission to complete!” She shoved him gently towards his plane.
“Start thinking of wedding plans!” Wolfman yelled as he ran over to his plane. Hollywood leaned against the side with a smirk on his face. He high fived his RIO, before turning to climb into the cockpit.
Bronco bit back a smile as she climbed into her own cockpit and closed the canopy. Wolfman and Hollywood launched first, and Y/N said a small prayer as she watched their tomcat become airborne. She was next and watched as ground control gave her the sign to go. She had flown alone before, so this was nothing new to her, except the fact that she was now wanted back at home. She flew behind Hollywood, listening over comms as Wolfman searched the sky for the enemy.
“They’re around here, I’ve got a hard on,” Wolfman said.
“Sure that’s not because Bronco is right there,” Hollywood joked.
“Save the locker room talk for later, boys,” Bronco said.
“Shit tally two, ‘Wood, 5 oclock,” Wolfman said, and Bronco could see the two enemy MiGs right behind them.
“Break left!” Bronco yelled.
Hollywood listened and pulled the joystick to the left, trying to lose them. The MiGs were smart, and sped up, going right after the pilots. Wolfman panicked slightly, as he watched them close the gap. He repeated their numbers back to Hollywood as him and Bronco came up with a plan to try and intercept them.
“Shit! Smoke in the air! Smoke in the air!” Wolfman cried out.
“Deploying flares!” Bronco called out, and hit the flares to try and throw off the missile.
The MiGs seemed to split, one on each of the pilots. Hollywood and Bronco did their best to try and stick by each other, hoping to get behind one of the MiGs to try and shoot it down, but they were staying too far behind them. It was too dangerous to try and drop down or pull up. Wolfman called out when they took enemy fire, and Bronco could hear the bullets hitting their plane.
“Out of flares! Dammit!” Hollywood called out, “He won’t fucking leave!”
“Hollywood, on my call, break left and pull up high and tight,” Bronco said, seeing a gap in the position of the MiGs. She could hear the beeping of the MiG trying to get missile lock on them.
“I don’t like-”
“Just do it. . . now!” Bronco called out as she heard that loud familiar blare of the alarm letting them know they were in total missile lock.
“Y/N, don’t!” Wolfman yelled out, but it was too late. He could see the look of determination on her face as she dropped into intercept the missile that was headed straight for them.  “No!” Wolfman closed his eyes at the sound of the missile and the plane as they collided. He pressed his hand to the canopy, looking as her plane split into two and hurled towards the ocean in a fireball.
“Eject! Eject, Bronco!” Wolfman’s voice cracked.
“Mayday! Mayday! We are totally covered by enemy MiGs, Bronco has been shot down. I repeat, Bronco has been shot down,” Hollywood called out, “Can’t take much more of this shit! Wolf! I need you!”
Wolfman nodded, and pulled back from the side of the canopy. He wiped a tear from his cheek and went back to looking at the radar. He rambled off some numbers to Hollywood, and then went back looking over the side, only seeing a black cloud of smoke rising from the ocean.

What to expect: A sort of retelling of Cinderella (bits and pieces from the Disney version but a bit different), it's a Christmas ball, Wolfman is a prince, poor Hollywood is a royal servant (but does a damn good job), the stepmother and stepsisters are little shits not so much the oldest sister but *shrugs*, might be biased but this is so cute honestly couldn't be happier with it, Lucifer the cat is a sweetheart
... Iceman and Slider are hidden in the crowd (not mentioned but I imagined them there in the ballroom), Maverick and Goose were not invited because of some pranks they played on the king in the past (also not mentioned)
@callmemana #1 fan and requester, I'm loving this one so much, honestly more than I expected I ever would. I'm so close to finishing it :( but also :D

wolfman x reader where boys night out typically means talk of s/o is off limits but when he shows up more subdued then they’ve ever seen him that can’t help but ask what’s up
(can take in any direction you want, he wants to marry r, they’re pregnant and he’s freaked out, fight and breakup or even, he finds out r is a virgin and that’s not something he’s use to dealing with etc.)

Boys Night | Henry "Wolfman" Ruth x Reader warnings: cheating, mentions of the TopGun '86 mission, the use of the term "burning in", near death, language.
Tumblr media
Wolfman's presence was hard to miss when he would show up to boys night. Not only was the blonde WSO tall, but he had a bright smile and a loud laugh that usually let the squadron know that he was there, but tonight was different. For one, Wolfman didn't have his oh so famous stetson on his head, and that beautiful smile was missing.
"Alright, I know it's boys night," Goose said, setting his cards down and looking over at Wolfe, "But you're being weird and it's weirding me out."
"I'm not being weird, Bradshaw," Wolfman muttered.
"Aha! You are! You called me, 'Bradshaw'," Goose exclaimed.
"Well, that is your last name," Maverick, pointed out, "But for real, Wolfie, you are acting a bit strange. What's up? Issues with the Missus?"
The boys all let out a low whistle as they looked around at Wolfe, who sighed, setting his cards down in front of him. Boys night was off limits for significant others. There was no talk about the women that they went home to (or in Mav's case, went to go find). But occasionally, they broke the rules when it looked like one of them was going through it.
"Y/N, she's uh. . . she wants to get married," Wolfe said quietly.
Y/N had been one of the few girlfriends that had made the sacrifice to come out and see the TopGun pilots during their training. She had be come close friends with Carole and Sarah (Iceman's girlfriend). The three of them had become inseparable as they shared the common theme of being significant others of the pilots. They all leaned on each other when the pilots got whisked away to some mission in the Indian Ocean not long after graduation.
"Well damn! That's huge!" Goose smiled, and patted Wolfman's back, but the RIO shook his head, "It's not?"
"Remember that last mission, after graduation?"
How could any of them forget? Hollywood and Wolfman had been shot out of the sky, their plane breaking into pieces as they hurdled towards the endless sea. Ice and Slider had to fight off four MiGs by themselves until Maverick came to their rescue and shot down three MiGs, making him the only active duty pilot with three confirmed air kills. It was a mission for the history books.
"I cheated on her," Wolfman said quietly, "It was dumb and stupid and I was. . . I didn't think I'd ever live to see her again. I mean, I felt the fucking jet broke apart with us still in it. I wasn't thinking and-"
"Does she know?" Iceman asked and Wolfe shook his head, "You need to tell her."
"I tried," Wolfman said, "I really did, but I couldn't so. . . I just packed my bags and left. Left her a note with an apology."
Wolfman could only imagine the scene playing out at his apartment right now. It was around 8:30 at night, so Y/N was just getting home from her girls night with Carole, Sarah, and Bradley. She had probably already noticed that his boots were missing from their usual spot by the front door, which would prompt her to call out his name. She would then walk to the kitchen and see that his cookbooks were gone, as well as the picture of him and Hollywood. She would then see the note, written on a yellow notebook pad.
"You son of a bitch Leonard!"
She would probably curse, as she would run up to see that his side of the closet had been ransacked, his drawers were empty, and a ring box was sitting on the side of the bed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“But they have dresses,” you point out to the woman you are to call stepmother.
She nods, “so it seems you are correct.” The wheels are turning in her head, scaring you.
Maybe informing of her dress, she will be more inclined to bring you along. “I have a dress and everything. You wouldn’t have to worry about a thing.”
“That would be true if your dress didn’t have a tear.”
You furrow your brows, “where?” You look down, wondering how you could have missed something that could potentially damage your nonexistent reputation.
“Why here,” she tugs down at the side of your dress skirt. “Of course.”
You attempt to step away from her, only for her to further ruin the dress. “Stop it.”
“How can I? You missed such a simple mistake. I only want you to right your wrong, dear.”
“No, stop it. Sisters, please?”
The youngest joins in, tearing at your right sleeve.
“No. No,” you cry out. “Why are you doing this?”
Your stepmother grasps your wrist, pulling you closer. “You must learn,” she leans down, less than seven inches between your faces. “You are not going to capture the prince’s attention. My daughters will. His fortune will be ours, not yours. We deserve it, not you.”
The eldest sister steps forward. “Mother, it’s time.” She was never one for conflict, but also never tried to help you. It was always hard to figure out which one was worse.
Your stepmother smiles, pulling away from you entirely. “You’re right, dear. Let’s go.”
Your stepsisters exit your home, heading towards the carriage.
She turns to you with a sinister smile, one she always directed towards you. “Be sure to finish the kitchen before we return home. You know where your cleaning supplies are, Cinder.” She throws her head back and laughs all the way towards the carriage.
Your nose burns, vision becoming blurry as you stare at the door.
You rush through the hallways and out the back door, not at all listening or paying attention to the other servants who also work for your stepmother.
-
You find yourself sitting on the bench, next to the tree your father loved before his sickness took him from you last year; letting the tears drip down your cheeks, under your chin where they fell into the front of your dress.
Someone’s shoes clacking against the stone walkway alert you.
You wipe your cheeks and chin but still find yourself crying.
They place a large coat over your shoulders, you hadn’t paid too much attention to the weather when you ran outside to realize it’s cold. “Don’t waste your tears on that woman.”
You lift your head and find, Margaret, the head servant who also happens to be your stepmother’s maid. “I know she doesn’t but,” you sigh, lifting a piece of the torn fabric. “Look at what they did to your dress.”
“Don’t worry about that now, dear.”
“How could I not? You were so kind as to lend me-”
“This dress is yours. I haven’t been able to fit into it for a long time now,” she jokes, gaining a chuckle from you. “Look at that, there’s that gorgeous smile.” She wipes your damp, tear-stained cheeks. “I’m going to help you.”
“How? You only had one dress hidden away so stepmother wouldn’t find it. And, we don’t have nearly enough time to fix or make a new dress. I may as well start on-”
“No, no. We are not going to use that negative mindset that wretched old woman has brought within this home. I have a secret your stepmother or sisters don’t know.”
Your brows furrow in confusion. “Like what?”
Margaret leans in and whispers, “magic.”
“No really.”
She sighs, walking closer towards the tree, “why does no one believe me?”
You push yourself off the bench, tugging the coat closer to you not wanting any of the cold air to touch your skin. You turn the corner but don’t find her. “Where-”
“Turn around dear.”
You spin around and find her in an entirely different outfit than the one she was in a few moments ago. “How-”
“Like I said, magic. Only those are special enough to have a fairy godmother and you are one of them.”
“I am?”
She nods, a proud smile stretching across her lips. “You are. Do you want to go to the Prince’s Christmas ball?”
“I do,” you quickly answer her. “You know I do. I would- all I want to do is go out there and dance. Hopefully say hello to a few friendly faces.”
She grips your chin, “I know you do.” She waves her free hand with the wand you never saw until the sparkle and yellow glow with bits of glitter blind you for a few seconds.
You look down and find yourself in the most beautiful dress you’ve ever seen, neither one of your stepsisters’ dresses could compare (and they always made sure they had the best of the best). “Oh, Margaret it’s- it’s beautiful.” You glance back at her, “how- how did you-”
“Like I said,” she raises the wand for you to see. “Magic.”
The smile slowly disappears from your lips. “How am I going to get to the ball?”
“Oh, don’t you worry about that. Everything’s already been taken care of.” She wraps her arm around the back of your shoulder’s, guiding you towards the front of the house.
You blink owlishly, wondering if everything that’s happened within the last ten minutes is real or not.
-
“This is your ride to and from the ball with Adam as your driver.”
“The stray cat?”
“The person, you know who it is. He was recently hired to help in the kitchen a few months ago, your stepmother’s request as you know we all were.”
“Okay.” You enter the carriage with the help of Adam.
“Oh,” Margaret slaps her hand against the door. “One more thing, you have until midnight.”
“Midnight?”
“At the stroke of midnight all of this that I so graciously put together will be gone. I have magic but not enough to keep your night going, it takes a lot of energy, you know. First, we did the dress. Then the carriage and getting everyone to help you while looking like royalty.”
“Okay, midnight.”
“Good, now that you’ve been warned. Have fun. I imagine you’ll catch the eye of many potential suitors.”
You stare at the floor, ignoring the heat in your cheeks. “I don’t think so.”
“Oh, you will. You have yet to find out how special you really are, my dear.” She watches as you leave your driveway. “The rest is up to you Rick.”
The plan is set in motion.
-
The carriage pulls you away from her and off to where you’ve only dreamed of dancing a handful of times (definitely more than a handful but who’s counting?) over the last year.
Stepmother never allowed you outside after your father died, leaving your friends with no way to contact you.
The carriage stops, your nerves are teeter tottering over the edge, your heartbeat is faster than normal, much faster than you have ever thought it could be.
Thankfully, the door opens revealing Adam; he holds his hand out for you.
You accept the assistance and nod, being sure to thank him (something no one else does other than the other servants).
-
You enter by yourself since you’ll be the one dancing and not for very long with the whole “ends at midnight” situation.
“So many stairs,” you mutter, walking what you hope is the last staircase before entering the ball room. ‘It’s been so long,’ you think. The faint sound of a Christmas song brings a slight sense of nostalgia and a sadness to your heart.
You can remember how your mother would play the piano while your father helped you decorate the tree since she “didn’t have the right taste”, when you were four.
Another heartwarming memory comes to mind, the year after you mother passed, you and your father sit by one another, listening to the crackle of the fire with the feeling that your mother is there, playing her favorite Christmas tune.
A shuddered breath escapes you; you wipe away your tears before they could fall and ruin your makeup.
The doors open and your blinded for a moment. The bright and colorful lights are everywhere to help brighten the room, making it look absolutely- “amazing.”
“Isn’t it?”
You nod until you realize someone’s beside you. It feels as though you’ve jumped ten feet in the air when in reality, it was only a hard flinch. You turn and curtsey before you could see their face.
“That’s not necessary.”
You straighten your posture and find the prince in front of you. ‘He’s here.’  “I apologize then.”
He smiles, nodding once. “Would you care to dance?”
You hum, pretending to think about it. “Not yet.”
“Really? I thought people who came to these kinds of events were here to dance.”
“Ah,” you start to walk away, finding him to be just interesting as he was when you last saw him.
“What was that?” He asks, you can hear the smile dancing across his lips.
“Nothing,” you shrug, “you just seem to think that I’m still like the others.”
“I remember now that you aren’t.” He stops in front of you.
“And how would you know that when you’ve only just met me?” You tease him, reminding him of when you two first met.
“I’m getting a… feeling.”
“A feeling?”
He nods, “yes, a feeling. Why? You don’t believe me?”
“I never said that.”
One of the royal servants walks up to the prince, whispering in his ear before leaving.
He turns towards you with a guilty expression.
“It’s alright, I understand. One’s job is never done, right?”
“Right. Save a dance for me?”
“You have my word.” A slight bitter taste is on your tongue at the thought of him dancing with his someone who... isn’t you. ‘Is this what he felt when it was I who had to dance?’
He opens his mouth to say more when he is dragged away.
You watch as he makes his way towards his father who announces that this ball is for his son to find a wife and of course your stepsisters are first and second in line to dance with him although it looks like his attention is drawn elsewhere.
With a heavy heart, you walk down the nearest hallway, hoping that it doesn’t lead anywhere you’re not supposed to be. You remember hearing that the king was having renovations done to the castle, hopefully no hallways were added.
-
Leonard calls for his buddy and servant, Rick, Hollywood to a selected few.
Once his buddy takes his place, he rushes down the same way he saw you enter.
-
You rest your hands against the railing, staring up at the stars, wondering how you can make your night last longer.
“There you are.”
You gasp, surprised there was someone else here. “Oh, it’s you.”
“Were you expecting someone else?”
“No.”
He stands beside you, eyes lowered staring at his hands, peeking over at you every so often. “Would you,” he clears his throat, “would care to dance?”
“Here?”
“Yes, it gives me the opportunity to see if you are wife material or not.”
You raise your brows and smile, “does it now?”
He nods, pushing himself off the railing. “Care to see to that challenge?”
“Why not?” This reminds you of a simpler time.
He holds his hand out for you to take, you accept in a more graceful manner than the other girls did, which he appreciates (more than you could know).
You feel as though you could spend hours dancing with him, this is what you’ve always dreamed about... if only the universe was on your side.
The clock chiming doesn’t click in your mind until the fifth chime.
Your eyes widen as you pull away from the man who has begun to re-win your heart. “I must go.” You bunch the skirt in your clenched fists and run down the hallway connected to the balcony.
He can’t let you go and does the one thing a love interest can do in these kinds of situations and chases after you. “Wait! Wait!”
You grip the top of the staircase railing.
He spins you around, “you have to leave now? Can’t you stay for a little while longer?”
“I’m afraid I cannot. I have to be elsewhere.”
“But- please,” he begs.
You remove his hand from your arm and race down the stairs. Your grip becomes tighter after you trip, stopping yourself from falling only to lose your slipper.
You can’t stop now, can’t let him see the torn dress or how bad your hair looks. You imagined him to be the kind of person who wouldn’t care but... your stepmother has brought on these negative thoughts.
-
“Wait! Ella! I don’t-” He jumps down from the second to last stair and finds your carriage speeding off into the distance.
His shoulders slump at the sight of you, staring out the window behind you looking as sad as can be.
His buddy, Rick stands beside him. “You found her and lost her?”
He nods. “But I do have her slipper. Maybe I can go around and ask for the women in the nearest town to try it on?”
Rick blinks once. “How am I friends with an idiot?”
“I take offense to that.”
“I hope so, it just means the king didn’t pay for nearly as studious tutors as he thought.”
“We both know you dragged me out of there whenever Archibald came over.”
“And he would make us do an essay every time.”
“Why isn’t my idea a good one?” Leonard asks.
“Because,” Rick slaps his hand on his friend’s shoulder. “My naive friend, we could check the bottom of her shoe or the guest list.”
“Oh, yeah.”
“Come on.” He grabs the slipper off the ground and checks the bottom of the shoe to find Margaret's hidden message, “you know where to go, beware of the stepsisters.”
“And this,” Rick smirks. “This is your ticket to your happily ever after.”
“Yeah,” Leonard nods without listening to what he said. He stops and glances over at his buddy, “wait- really?”
“Yep, but we’ll start tomorrow or later today since it is midnight.”
“Are you lying?”
“What?” Rick throws his head back and laughs. “Why do you think I’m lying, man?”
He raises a brow.
“Alright, alright. I get it but I’m being one hundred percent completely honest with you.”
“Fine.”
They make it to the top of the stairs.
“Oh,” the prince turns back to face his friend, “send all of the ladies home.”
The smile falls from Rick’s face. “What?”
“Yeah, send ‘em all home. I’ve found my happy ending.”
“Oh, come on.” He walks away, aiming for the hallway no one besides the two use. “Charming!” Rick throws his hands up, using the nickname reserved for when his friend makes the most annoying and tiring requests. “Charming, come on.”
-
There’s a knock on the door, you don’t stop sweeping as per your stepmothers request of, she being the only one to answer the door.
“Oh my!” She exclaims, alerting your stepsisters.
“What is it, mother?” asks the youngest.
“Someone from the royal family has arrived. Oh, he’s chosen one of you to be his bride and- oh my- his fortune will be ours.” She turns, glaring at you. “You have some cleaning to do upstairs. In your room. Its filthy.”
You don’t try and argue with her, not wanting to feel her wrath this evening and begun your journey up the stairs.
-
You sit in the specially designed seat your father had built for you as a child and stare out the window only for a furball to jump into your lap. You smile, petting Lucifer’s soft black fur. “How could they say you were a harmful cat? Hm? You don’t see that bad to me.”
He lifts his head, staring at you with his jade green eyes, letting out a quiet meow.
Tink!
You furrow your brows.
Tink!
“Where is that-” Your eyes widen at the sight of the prince- Leonard.
Lucifer hops off your lap, preferring to nap on your bed instead.
You open your window, smiling down at him. “What are you doing here?”
“I had to find you!”
You shush him. “You must be quiet; my stepmother is downstairs talking to-”
“Rick! Yes, he’s a distraction.”
“A distraction?”
He nods.
“How do you expect me to get down without alerting anyone?”
He stops, “good question.” Leonard looks back up.
“And do not think of asking me to jump down into your arms, Leo.”
“Ah, so you do remember me?”
“How could I not? We’ve technically known each other for almost all of our lives. When did you realize who I was?”
“When we danced at the ball but more so when were arrived outside your house.”
“Of course, you did. But why are you here?”
“I’ve come to realize you are the one I will marry.”
“Will?” You giggle, he hears it and smiles even wider than he did earlier.
“Yes,” he nods. “We will live out our childhood dream and get married.”
“I believe that was your dream.”
“No, if you could recall-”
“I went along with the game. Now, find something for me to use so I can come down safely.”
“If you look to your right, there’s now a ladder in place for you to climb down.”
“Good, I’ll be down shortly.”
You rush around the room, packing two bags, one with sentimental items you know your stepmother will ruin once she finds out that you’ve left and the other one for Lucifer.
-
“You didn’t need to pack your bags. I could have-”
“I don’t trust the woman I am to call stepmother. I was lucky to have left home and make it to the ball before the night ended.”
His brows knit together in confusion, “did she never let you outside?”
“I wasn’t a daughter to her; I was another servant.”
Now he feels bad. “Why didn’t you leave sooner?”
“And go where?”
“You could have come to me. I haven’t seen you since your father died last year. I didn’t even see you at his funeral-” the look on your face tells him all he needs to hear. “She didn’t.”
“She did,” you confirm his awful theory.
“Well now, you’ll be away from wretched woman.”
You abruptly stop, hand on his forearm. “You were serious about the marriage?”
He nods, “I am.”
“Are you sure you’d want to marry me? We haven’t spoken to one another for quite some time and who’s to say we will be good together?”
He’s taking a big leap here. “Because we have a special bond. We’re talking as if nothing’s happened. I know we will be good together because…”
“Because?”
“I…”
“Are you feeling alright?”
“I have loved you since we were children, and I wouldn’t want to marry anyone else that wasn’t you!” He spits out.
“Oh,” your brows reach your forehead, eyes widen in surprise.
“Oh?” He repeats.
“Yes, “oh?” What else do you want me to say? You caught me off guard and I had no idea how to properly respond other than I have had feelings for you for as long as I could remember and dancing with you just- it made me realize how much I care about you…”
“As in, you feel same way I do, or you want to just be friends?”
“What do you think? Do you think I’d escape my room on a ladder I didn’t know was secure or not for anyone?”
“No,” he smirks. “But I need to hear you say it.”
“I… have very strong feelings for you.”
“Three words.”
“I like you.”
“Different L word.”
“I loathe you.”
“Nicer L word.”
You take a deep breath, “I love you.”
“Good. Now,” he grabs your hand. “We have to go tell father.”
“What? Now?”
He opens the carriage door, letting you take your time getting in. “Yes, now. One second, excuse me.” He sticks his head out the window and whistles for Rick. “Technically were already engaged but your stepmother stopped it from happening and now that I am aware of this, I know what I must do, and we can be together without having to worry about them.
You scoff, “that’s why she kept saying that.”
“What was that?”
“Nothing. I’m just- I’m happy to be out of there.” The bag on your chest moves. “Oh! Lucifer, I’m sorry. Come on, out we go.”
He sits in your lap, eyes wandering, taking in all the new sights. “You have a cat,” he says in awe. He remembers you two always wanted to get a cat, but it was never the right time.
“Yes, his name is Lucifer.”
“Make sure to keep him near the dining hall.”
“Why?” You ask extending the word.
“Merlin pissed me off.”
“My, my, the prince cursing, what a scandal.”
“You won’t be so surprised about it later.”
You huff at his insinuation, petting your fluffy boys head, in the spot right between his ears.
-
Your wedding was already planned out with minor changes from the both of you; you both wanted there to be something each of you picked out and/ or wanted.
His father had no objections to Leonard marrying you, in fact, he tried to get you two to elope but knew it wasn’t appropriate.
“How does it feel to be the very thing you should have been years ago, wife?”
You hum, turning to him. “And, what’s that husband?”
“A princess… married to a handsome prince.”
A teasing smile tugs at your lips. “Let me know when one arrives.”
“You wound me, darling.”
“You know I’m only playing with you.”
“I do.” He lets Lucifer settle in the space between your empty dishes. “I’m happy we found each other that night.” Even if it was a mere few months ago.
“Yeah?”
He stares at you and nods, a wide smile dancing across his lips. “You know I can’t lie to you.”
You rest your head against his shoulder. “How can you be so sweet?”
“Because Merlin is currently seeing the doctor so he can get his allergies under control.”
You smack his shoulder.
“Don’t be like that darling. It’s a joke, I’m joking.” He scoots closer to you, “you know how happy I am to have found my hea.”
“Hea?”
“Happily, ever after.”
He notices the look you’re giving him. “… Rick said it.”
“Okay. Whatever you say, Leo.”
An offended noise escapes his open mouth, “he did!”
“And I believe you.”
He grumbles, pulling Lucifer into his lap.
You smile and peck his cheek.
He puts on a show, making it seem like he isn’t going to smile but loses.
How could he not smile when he’s married the one who almost got away but managed to find your way back to him.

As the door clicked shut and the lock sounded, Ella knew she was trapped in the attic until her step-mother felt fit enough to let her out.
Her Step-mother had found her shoe in her Hope Chest and smashed it on the ground, the memory of her perfect night shattered like her slipper.
She pounded on the door to try and get another’s attention to free her but after a while she gave up and laid on her bed, head in her arms as she sobbed.
She could hear muffled voices downstairs, the front door opening, people coming in, and sounds of objects moving. Unknown to her, her little mice friends were trying to help.
Jac Jac and Gus Gus were on a mission to retrieve the key to Cinderella’s door, but had some fallbacks. For one, the mistress of the house kept it in her pocket and hand around it, as if it could disappear into thin air.
After many failed attempts at retrieving the key, they gave up and tried another way. They had to get Ella out of the attic, this was her chance at a happily ever after, a chance to get out of this horrible house and away from these dreadful people.
It would be the least they could do for her after everything she did for them!
As the eldest sister sat down upon the chair, a servant tried to put it on her foot, but alas, the foot was too wide for the slim glass.
Upset at the outcome, she took the shoe from the servant and jammed her foot into it, “There, it fits!'' As she finished her exclamation, the shoe showed her toes squished against the glass uncomfortable, her eyebrows furrowed in pain, and jaw clenched.
“Well, ma’am, the prince did say every available maiden must try on the shoe.'' He said carefully, as if not to hurt her feelings, took off the slipper and motioned for the other sister to sit.
The other sat gracefully, holding her foot out delicately to the servant and smiled. The servant gently placed the shoe on her foot and gasped, it actually fit her, perfectly to be exact!
“Sire, we have the girl!”
“Yes, Yes. Now go, get her things we must leave at once!” The servants ran off towards the staircase as the three women smiled and planned.
Once the sister left, soon her mother and other daughter departed too.
Ella, seemed to be forgotten, spent several days locked in her room before someone found the spare key and let her out.
By that time, her sister had taken her happily ever after.
Leonard could see that this was not the woman he danced with, but he was vague with instructions, for he only said to ‘find the girl who fits into the slipper’ not ‘find a girl with golden hair and eyes blue as the ocean who’s foot fit into the slipper’’ for that mistake he is forever unhappily married to the wrong girl.
He was just too frazzled to give more information than just find the girl with the missing shoe. He missed the maiden whose name he knows not, but am undoubtedly in love with.
Leonard stood with his new bride at his side at a court meeting his father held with a blank gaze and clenched jaw.
His friends could see that he wasn’t happy, the only time Rick had seen him truly happy was when he danced with the mystery maiden at the ball. His friends didn’t like to see him this way, constantly angry and upset.
Before the marriage, Leonard was a little adventurous and mischievous, always getting in trouble with his friends, now, he was silent and always brushing their fun away.
They also didn’t like the maiden he did marry, for she was rude as was her sister, a learned trait from their mother no doubt. So, after the meeting the Prince’s friends held a meeting of their own and discussed what to do.
“Well?”
“We could find her, convince her he’s not happy with his wife?”
“Do you even know what she looks like?”
“No, but Rick does. I overheard him and Leonard talking in the hall one afternoon.”
They all pan towards Rick, “I have seen her, but there is a problem. We don’t even know if she’s from this kingdom.”
“Then we send word to other Kingdoms close by, maybe one of them has seen her!”
“Unlikely, there could be thousands, millions of maidens that match the description of her!”
“Do you suggest we just let our friend be miserable?”
“No, but we have to find a special characteristic about her that only she could have, something that couldn’t be duplicated!”
“Then we must talk to Leonard, maybe he could tell us something useful in finding his true love!”
Leonard was in his study, reading a book as the doors slam open and his friends are coming in.
“What’s this about?”
“You being a dumbass.”
“I’m not following, Nicholas.”
“You were so memorized by the maiden that you danced with the night of the ball that you only gave a brief description on how to find her. Well, we have come up with a way to do just that!”
“And, pray tell, what is it? How do you plan to do that? I’ve already lost her and I am married to another woman.”
“Did you see any identifying features? Anything special characteristically about her?”
“Yes. She had a scar on her right, inside upper arm. I saw it while we were dancing, it looked like it was from a burn. Does that help?”
“Yes, Leonard, it does. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome, just promise me you’ll find her.”
“I’ll do everything in my power to.”
For weeks the friends tried to find the maiden, went to every house and asked questions to every villager.
When they spotted an older woman, they all exchanged looks before running towards her. If anyone was to know the maiden, it would be someone who’s been here for quite some time and knows everyone.
“Excuse me ma’am,”
“Yes my dear?”
“Do you happen to know a maiden with golden hair, blue eyes, and a burn scar on her right upper arm?” her eyes widen and she gasps, she didn’t pay much attention to their clothes at first, but now that she sees their royalty, she quickly excuses herself and leaves, leaving the men suspicious and worried.
They tried to follow the older woman to find out where she’s hiding, but the woman was quick and used passage ways unknown to them to escape.
During the week, they tried to corner her and ask questions, but every time they got close something would happen to gain their attention and look away enough for her to bolt.
After a month with no success and their friend wallowing in self-pity,  they tried a different approach.
They had convinced Leonard to get out of the castle in villager clothes and talk to the woman, and when they found her with a basket full of foods, they pushed Leonard towards her and hid.
“Hello ma’am, may I talk to you for a moment?”
She looked at him and smiled, “Why of course, dearie.”
“I was wondering if you’ve seen a young woman with blonde hair and blue eyes and a burn scar on her upper right arm? I’m looking for her.”
“Well, yes, I do know her. You’re talking about Ella, she lives up on Hickory Lane, in the big white house with the black accents, but if you ask me, its too big for just one person. Be careful dearie, she isn’t the same after her step-mother and step-sisters left to go live in the castle. Oh no, she’s been sad and rude since then.”
He thanked her and started his path to find his one true love, Ella, as it seems her name is. His friends following behind him closely, for he is a Prince and might need protection.
When they had made it to the house, they saw it had its windows boarded up and lights off, as if no one lived there for years.
Gathering his courage, Leonard knocked on the door in three swift hits. The group waited for a minute or two after hearing no response or footsteps coming closer and knocked again, this time more firm and loud.
Perhaps the lady of the house was too far away and couldn’t hear? More time passed and still no acknowledgement was given to the knocks.
Growing tired of being ignored, Leonard knocked again, and accompanied it with a shout, “Ella, are you in there? If so, would you please come out to chat?” as they waited for a response this time, Leonard bounced on his heels with a winning smile plastered on his face.
“Go away, I’m not taking any visitors today sir!”
“Please, I think it is very important that we meet!”
“I said not today sir! Good bye!”
The smile slowly made its way into a frown as he said, “Alright then, good bye Ella.” the others patted his back in condolences and reassured him that maybe tomorrow he’d have better luck.
The next couple of weeks were spent with Leonard and his friends coming to the house and trying to convince Ella to talk to him, and each day, ended much like the first.
When Leonard had had quite enough of this childish behavior, and coming from him, is a big statement, had travelled behind the gate and went into the house using the back entrance.
He quietly surveyed the area, being careful and silent in his approach to find the woman he sought after.
As he rounded the corner to the kitchen, he saw a young woman that fits the description of the maiden he danced with sulking as she cleaned the floors.
“You’re too beautiful to be this sad, please talk to me.”
She wiped her tears quickly despite him already seeing them fall, “How did you get in here? Who are you?” she questioned.
He puts his hands up as if to not startle her even more, “I went in the back entrance, I’ve tried the front for weeks with no answer. As for who I am, well darling, I am Prince Leonard. I believe you to be the maiden I danced with until midnight when you ran away.”
She clutched her broom as he spoke, unwilling to let go of this incase he was just here to rob her.
“I did no such thing, and you couldn’t possibly be the Prince, he is a married man.”
“Darling, I am the Prince, and as for my marriage, it is an unhappy one for I have married the wrong woman.” he gently grabs her hands in his.
“You have married the love of your life, sire, and for that I am very happy, but if you believe that I am even in the same social status as you, or the princess, you are mistaken. I am a maid, the Tramaine’s maid for decades and always have been. I hold no torch to the beauty of the Princess nor do I want to. Sire, please go home to her, love her for eternity, as she does you. You should forget about me, Your Highness. For I am nobody compared to her.”
She turns around and slips from his grip, “No! No, you are wrong, Ella, you are so much more than beauty to me. You are kind, and generous, as for my wife, she is the opposite. Her and her family will undoubtably run this kingdom to the ground with the coin they spend daily, and the rudeness they show to those under them in status. You, You my dear Ella, have a gentle heart, and would never do the awful things they do to the servants and staff alike. Please, consider this proposal?”
“I will think it over My Liege,” he nodded his head once, then twice, as if to reassure himself that he had gotten through to her.
As the days turn into weeks with still no reply to the proposal, Leonard started to get worried about Ella.
He decided to take a day off from his Kingly duties and ride the carriage down to the abandoned house.
He knocks once, twice, three times and waits for a few seconds before starting the knock pattern again.
This time after the wait he just opens the door and sees the dust and grime floating in the air.
And there’s a certain smell that permeates the air, somewhat of decay.
He finds the woman from before sitting in a big soft looking chair and a fire almost out.
Soon he realizes that she’s the cause of the pungent smell as he gets closer.
Leonard shouts, “Rick, please call the guards! We need to give the news to the Princess and her family.”
He knows that he has so reason to cry over the lost of this beautiful woman, not while he was married and had no claim on her to begin with.
Her face had sunken cheeks and tired bags under her unopened eyes.
It looks as if she passed in her sleep, he hopes it was at least a nice dream before the Grim Reaper took her from this plane of existence.
A week later was her funeral and as a noble’s daughter, she was given the honor of having the funeral she deserved.
He was one of the only people to show up as a large amount of nobles around the district and continent forgot about her.
When is was his turn to show his respects to her coffin he whispered, “I will carry my undying love for you until the day I am no longer walking the earth.”
Leonard takes a deep breath as the tears start to slowly stream down his face.
“I am beyond sorry for my late proposal and wished it was you who I would spend the rest of my life with and not your terrible sister. You are the only true love I’ve ever had.”
One tear lands on her hands as he says her last goodbye to her, his Ella.
