Serious.
The one thing Hermes isn’t.
I’m just another one of his toys— a game, I tell myself. But I can’t shake the feeling I get when he looks at me with such a desperate glint in his eyes, as if he wants, no, needs me. It disappears just as quickly as it comes.
I hear the familiar flap of wings as I’m stringing together a seashell bracelet. So is the life of a nymph of Circe. Leisurely and free. Circe is an independent woman— I have half a mind that she just calls us her servants to have a reason to keep us. I turn to look back. Just as I do, Hermes’ feet drop to the sand. I say nothing.
“Hello to you too, little nymph,” Hermes greets. I give him a glance, but don’t speak. He lazily lays across my lap, looking up at me with a pleasant smile on his lips. Though, after a while of silence, it drops.
“Say something. Anything. Something silly. Something romantic. I just want to hear your voice,” he reaches up and pokes my cheek.
“Silence shouldn’t always be filled, you know,” I remark. He rolls his eyes.
“But silence is so dull, don’t you agree?” Hermes shifts, now laying on his stomach. I go quiet again. He never gets very angry— he always treats everything like a joke. Except when he does get angry.
Hermes huffs, quickly standing up.
“Fine! I’m not going to sit here, wasting my time on a woman who won’t even give me the time of day!” He shouts. I see the pure look of anger in his eyes, but there’s also a clear need there as well— for me to pull him back down, tell him to stay.
“I never said you had to leave— this is my time that I’m giving you,” I mumble, trying to seem nonchalant.
“No! You give me nothing! I’ve never visited anyone as much as you! I don’t talk to anyone like I talk to you, I don’t look at anyone like I look at you,” he rants. “Can’t you see? I want you, need you, I—” He gets choked up on his words. To say what he wanted to say next would be commitment. Was he ready for that?
“You won’t say it.” I say absentmindedly. Suddenly, I’m pinned to the sand. My bracelet, not yet finished, is flung to the side. All the seashells fly off the string, though that’s the least of my worries right now. I’m being pinned to the sand, by the god of thieves.
“I need you. Tell me you feel the same way, tell me you feel this.. this pull,” Hermes begs. To have a god beg for you is a jarring experience.
“No,” I refuse. “Say it.”
He lets out a harsh breath— I know he knows what I’m talking about.
“I love you.”
