And even if you play your Warden as somebody who really really didn't want to become a warden and was forced into it during their origin prologue, by the time Duncan dies, maybe the Warden takes this as an opportunity to become their own leader. They no longer need to suck it up to Duncan or any other warden or the order in general. (If you play a circle mage, they are finally free and maybe they don't want to follow any person's leadership. ) They can carve their own path and by the end of the game they can earn significant respect, they might even become a little power hungry, who knows. It's up to you. In short The Warden's feelings about becoming a leader all depend on how you play it and imagine it. DAO allows a huge amount of freedom in this regard. Which is awesome. You have options to express both reluctance and excitement during every origin prologue and later on as well, after Ostagar. The game actually created a pretty genius story basis for the main character to end up in a situation where it makes sense for them to be leaders and to be allowed to make big decisions. And that is absolutely essential for an rpg like this. They allowed Alistair to exist as a character who can be there with the main character since the beginning and they go through this together but they wrote him a personality that makes it logical for him to not try to take leadership away. It would be actually waaaay more unlikeable if he started bossing around our character just because he was part of the order for a slightly longer time.

kind of surprised at how much people romance alistair when i feel like every warden (but especially cousland) has very good reason to resent him

that conversation when the party first arrive in lothering always bothered me. "i don't know where we should go. i dont want to lead" you are the SENIOR WARDEN, alistair, even after being recruited, the warden was kept in the dark about so many things. they weren't with the wardens long enough to learn about the dreams, or the shortened lifespan, or the loss of fertility, or anything. I know even alistair didn't know everything (a fundamental failure of the grey wardens, imo, how much they insist everything should be a secret) but he had six months at least. the warden had. a day.

secondly, its having all that responsibility thrust upon them, then having to comfort alistair through his grief when they have likely recently exoerienced their own loss (and, in the case of cousland, leave their parents to be murdered)

i kept seeing takes of how nobody cares about rook, they have to help everyone with their problems when no one will help with theirs, but that has always been the lot of the da protagonist, and i feel it most keenly with the hero of fereldan

I don't really know why, but that scene has had a tight grip on my soul since my first playthrough.

So, I finally gathered the courage to start posting my art here. I have been on hiatus for several years now, due to medical issues, but this series has kept me going in spite of it all: doodles upon doodles have started piling up on my computer, and so I'm slowly re-learning how to hold a pen, to honor my love for this series that has given me so much and keeps giving every day. I will be tagging my art as #a blight upon the world and I hope you'll choose to stick around to see it. These panels took longer than I care to admit, but I'm proud of all the symbolism I could cram into them (and if you'd like to take guesses and find bits of it, please do!! it would make me really happy!!).

why did they do him so fucking dirty in Trespasser anyway lol 😭 I'm half convinced he was originally meant to be an entirely different character and then last minute they were like, 'hey let's make him Teagan instead' but didn't change anything about his design. But it IS really funny when your Inquisitor rides up to the exalted council and looks up at him and he's just mean mugging the FUCK out of you

This is utterly and unapologetically self-indulgent. No composition, no symbolism. Just them. There's a story behind it, though, as the title implies. Full piece under the cut because I like the cropped one better.

I swear I'll draw something else, eventually, but replaying DAO always affects me deeply.
