also oh this is a very good question, and the answer is a bit complicated.

first, i'll say outright, their relationship falling apart in general is the latter. things did not have to end the way they did. while not all of the factors that influenced their relationship were in their control, and there's a lot that i think genuinely couldn't have gone that differently, i'm hesitant to say any of it was DESTINED. ink and arthur both fucked up big time at many points, and if they'd made different choices (like getting some fucking therapy or at least fucking communicating with each other) then maybe things could've gone better!

however. the exact way things end. i actually think that's how it was going to end regardless, but that's less on them and more on "this supernatural event that takes place was going to happen anyway." would it have gone the same way? not necessarily! but well. uh. arthur's death is the way it is for many reasons and ink and arthur actually each had very little influence on that particular event.

so short version: ink and arthur's relationship going downhill was not at all predestined and was very avoidable. arthur's death, on some level, probably wasn't as avoidable.
