Instructional Design and Evaluation
Thinking about all the assignments you did this month, which ones are you selecting to go into your portfolio folder?
The project I am including is the video I created to showcase my Capstone Project. As all the documentation I created through the month is included as part of the video, it illustrates the full progression of the work completed during the month.
2. What does your selection(s) say about you as an instructional designer?
The selection shows that as an instructional designer I can effectively define and plan a learning objective. While the full delivery of the project will come next month, proper planning ensures that the learning outcomes are met. Through the documents created, TNA, FPI, HTA, and IDD Blueprint, it shows that I know how to break down the core of an instructional problem and design instruction to address and fix it.
3. What skills did you learn this month? How can you best demonstrate those in your final portfolio?
This month I learned how to define, organize, and design a plan to meet a learning objective. Through the documentation worked on through the month, I learned to take a problem from a general, far-reaching view to a refined design that I can take into next month to build a successful media asset. One of my favorite comparisons given in the month was how the TNA starts us off at a 50,000-foot view and each subsequent document takes us closer to the ground. I was also able to explore Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction in greater depth and see how it is effective as an instructional design model.
Capstone Presentation Transcript
Welcome to new hire onboarding for Capstone Adventure Resort. While Capstone Adventure Resort is a fictional company, this video will showcase how I would design and build out training as an instructional designer and will lead into my Capstone project next month.
Every company can benefit from a strong onboarding program, and while each organization will have unique needs and skills to be covered, this project will highlight how my skills can be utilized.
I began with developing a Training Needs Analysis or (TNA). As I am in an area famous for its many theme parks, I built my company from a resort perspective. While I have my own onboarding experiences with new jobs, I searched out subject matters experts that would help guide the development of the training. Creative Onboarding Programs written by Doris Sims and Effective Onboarding written by Norma Davila and Wanda Pina-Ramirez both reinforced my own ideas as well as ensured I would meet additional key points for successful onboarding practices.
I’ve found that gamification of learning creates engaging and memorable experiences, so I knew I would include an interactive media element through Captivate. When first learning how gamification enhances learning content, I found Marie Jo Leroux who shares effective strategies in designing Gamified eLearning.
The TNA helped me define what the learning gap is for new hires in my company which would lead to the outcomes I would like accomplished by the end of the training period.
For gamification to work at its best, the game element must be built around the learning outcomes and not have the learning outcomes crammed into the game. The TNA helped me define my learning objectives and then narrow it down to one objective that would benefit from the virtual theme park I will ultimately build. Many companies list and define their driving values, and I decided these values or for my company the Core Keys would fit in well with the format of the game I plan to create.
Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction or FPI is the main framework I’m using for developing my training. I had my lower foundation built with the TNA and could now build on that structure more fully with creating an FPI document.
I began with defining the task of on-boarding new employees and how taking the time to invest in employee development from their first day benefits both the company in employee retention and the employee as they are motivated to invest in their growth.
Everyone has a story to tell so for activation I have the new hires share what drew them to Capstone Adventure Resort and what past onboarding training they’ve experienced, both good, and bad. They will also share their expectation for the onboarding experience.
As the Core Keys are the driving values for the resort and the learning focus for the capstone project, demonstration of the keys will take place through in-person orientation. 
This leads to application. With a chance to practice during their onboarding training, ultimately the new hires will demonstrate the keys in practice through the planned virtual theme park game.
Integration will occur as the new hires apply the Core Keys into their everyday tasks in their roles throughout the resort.
With the foundation of my learning complete it was time to dive deeper with a Hierarchical Task Analysis. As I would now be building the structure, I needed to finalize what the Core Keys would be for my fictional company. I researched the key values of several theme parks to see what they considered important as driving ideals for their companies.
I laid out what I deemed would be important to include in onboarding based off the research I did through my SME’s and off my own experience with orientations. I had a decent layout, but it still wasn’t quite right. The elements were there but it felt too random. The more I looked at it I realized that if the Core Keys were the driving values of the resort and of such high importance, new hires needed more than to just be given a definition. As I looked at the units I planned, I realized each one related to one of the Core Keys I had created.
 I went through and re-organized the planned course so that each part of the training is taught as part of its corresponding Core Key. Even lunches are scheduled to correlate with the keys Community and Fun depending on their times and location.
I did have a moment of experiencing how creating the TNA down through the IDD Blueprint helps organize and ensures something isn’t missed before going into production. As I finalized my original version of my HTA, I had five Core Keys, and that is the number I indicated on my IDD Blueprint. As I was revisiting my HTA as part of preparing for this presentation I realized I had left off one important key every company included with their values and one I had always intended to be part of my own company’s keys, safety. I’ve gone back in to include it as part of the onboarding schedule in my HTA and will now have it included with my project next month as I originally intended.
I took the TNA, FPI, and HTA to create my final IDD Blueprint of what I will build. The instructional problem is defined based off of what was first described in the TNA, and the IDD Blueprint illustrates how the knowledge gap will be filled. Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction are all met as I describe the design model being used. Through review of the FPI, I ensured the learning outcomes and media asset I will create fulfills the defined demonstration and application segments. While the IDD Blueprint illustrates how one learning outcome will be achieved, I used the HTA to make sure the full training would work together to reach that goal.
By defining and organizing my training through these documents, I am now in the best position to go into production of my capstone media asset and fully share how my skills will benefit my future career and employer.
