"A cure for HIV could be a step closer after researchers found a new way to force the virus out of hiding inside human cells.
The virus’s ability to conceal itself inside certain white blood cells has been one of the main challenges for scientists looking for a cure. It means there is a reservoir of the HIV in the body, capable of reactivation, that neither the immune system nor drugs can tackle.
Now researchers from the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne, have demonstrated a way to make the virus visible, paving the way to fully clear it from the body.
It is based on mRNA technology, which came to prominence during the Covid-19 pandemic when it was used in vaccines made by Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech.
In a paper published in Nature Communications, the researchers have shown for the first time that mRNA can be delivered into the cells where HIV is hiding, by encasing it in a tiny, specially formulated fat bubble. The mRNA then instructs the cells to reveal the virus.
Globally, there are almost 40 million people living with HIV, who must take medication for the rest of their lives in order to suppress the virus and ensure they do not develop symptoms or transmit it. For many it remains deadly, with UNAids figures suggesting one person died of HIV every minute in 2023.
It was “previously thought impossible” to deliver mRNA to the type of white blood cell that is home to HIV, said Dr Paula Cevaal, research fellow at the Doherty Institute and co-first author of the study, because those cells did not take up the fat bubbles, or lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), used to carry it.
The team have developed a new type of LNP that those cells will accept, known as LNP X. She said: “Our hope is that this new nanoparticle design could be a new pathway to an HIV cure.”
When a colleague first presented test results at the lab’s weekly meeting, Cevaal said, they seemed too good to be true.
“We sent her back into the lab to repeat it, and she came back the next week with results that were equally good. So we had to believe it. And of course, since then, we’ve repeated it many, many, many more times.
“We were overwhelmed by how [much of a] night and day difference it was – from not working before, and then all of a sudden it was working. And all of us were just sitting gasping like, ‘wow’.”
Further research will be needed to determine whether revealing the virus is enough to allow the body’s immune system to deal with it, or whether the technology will need to be combined with other therapies to eliminate HIV from the body.
The study is laboratory based and was carried out in cells donated by HIV patients. The path to using the technology as part of a cure for patients is long, and would require successful tests in animals followed by safety trials in humans, likely to take years, before efficacy trials could even begin.
“In the field of biomedicine, many things eventually don’t make it into the clinic – that is the unfortunate truth; I don’t want to paint a prettier picture than what is the reality,” stressed Cevaal. “But in terms of specifically the field of HIV cure, we have never seen anything close to as good as what we are seeing, in terms of how well we are able to reveal this virus.
“So from that point of view, we’re very hopeful that we are also able to see this type of response in an animal, and that we could eventually do this in humans.”
Dr Michael Roche of the University of Melbourne and co-senior author of the research, said the discovery could have broader implications beyond HIV, with the relevant white blood cells also involved in other diseases including cancers.
Dr Jonathan Stoye, a retrovirologist and emeritus scientist at the Francis Crick Institute, who was not involved in the study, said the approach taken by the Melbourne team appeared be a major advance on existing strategies to force the virus out of hiding, but further studies would be needed to determine how best to kill it after that.
He added: “Ultimately, one big unknown remains. Do you need to eliminate the entire reservoir for success or just the major part? If just 10% of the latent reservoir survives will that be sufficient to seed new infection? Only time will tell.
“However, that does not detract from the significance of the current study, which represents a major potential advance in delivery of mRNA for therapeutic purposes to blood cells.”"

Revolutionizing Healthcare: The Power of At-Home Testing

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a significant public health concern worldwide, affecting millions of people each year. Despite the availability of testing and treatment options, many individuals may feel uncomfortable or embarrassed to seek testing at a traditional clinic. Enter std testing at home, which offers a discreet and convenient alternative. These kits typically include everything you need to collect a sample in the privacy of your own home, whether it’s a urine sample or a swab from the genital area. Once you've collected your sample, you simply send it off to a lab for analysis, and within a few days, you'll receive your results securely online or via a phone call.

Hi fellow US autists/hsp/folks with medical trauma/anyone else who might need, if going to a clinic for HIV testing is as impossible for you as it is for me, the site offers at home testing resources sponsored by the government. Shocking, I know.
Especially if you’ve gotten used to doing home Covid tests, these tests are pretty easy, just a cheek swab or tiny finger pokey. And they can be mailed straight to your house.
i’m sorry I don’t have information for other countries, if you find some thing for your home country, please consider sharing. A lot of people can’t handle the process of going somewhere to get tested.

Now is the Time to Start Masking Again
If you stopped paying attention to COVID with the release of vaccines, you've missed a lot.
COVID is airborne.
Long COVID impacts 10% of people infected by COVID (though this is beginning to look like a low estimate). Risk of Long COVID goes up with each reinfection. Long COVID is worse than initially reported.
Bisexual and trans people are more likely to develop Long COVID.
Black and Hispanic folks are more likely than White folks experience more symptoms and health problems from Long COVID.
***COVID and Long COVID has much more in common with HIV and AIDS than the flu (28:19 - 38:30 of linked video)***
The Basics

"This is great and all but it's overwhelming. TL;DR?"
COVID is airborne. Long COVID is much more common (and serious/debilitating) than previously thought.
Mask with an N95 or better in all indoor spaces and outside when close to others. Improve your indoor air quality by opening windows and using fans/air filters.
Rapid tests are prone to false negatives so make sure to retest in 48 hours after exposure and/or when you develop symptoms. Isolate in the meantime. Consider upgrading to a NAAT (PlusLife, Metrix) or PCR (Lucira) if you have the money.
Things for you to do today:
buy some N95s or request some from a local mask bloc
open a window more often and/or buy an air purifier
buy the best COVID tests you can afford

Song 2: Jesse Van Horn x Reader (NSFW)

Tagging: @caffeinatedwoman @cosmic-psychickitty @kmc1989 @happyfox43 @julius-ceasar
Companion piece to
Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll - Jesse tries to convince you not to disrupt your trip during the aftermath of Pittfest.

Drums are therapy for Jesse especially after nightmare shifts like Pittfest.
He likes the delicacy of a guitar, the notes you can wring from it but his real passion has always been the drums because you have to throw your heart and soul into it, you have to feel it to do it.
He slept like shit last night, images of blood and viscera flashing across his mind as he stared at the empty space beside him. It’s worse when you’re not here, you’ve always had this ability to sooth him, to fend off the darkness that creeps in during the dead of night and right now it feels like it’s taking over.
The shower doesn’t help, he still feels groggy and lethargic when he climbs out. He throws on his white ‘The Clash’ tank over black basketball shorts and returns to what’s tried and tested, playing Blur’s Song 2 as loud as he can in his noise cancelling headphones and smashing the hell out of the drum kit.
He spends hours chasing that impossible beat, trying to erase the demons from his mind. He focuses on the intense tapping of the sticks across the canvas as the music vibrates through the very core of his being.
Song 2 is so complex that it’s only ever meant to be played by two drummers, it never stops Jesse trying though. He likes the challenge of it, the way it absorbs him, consumes him.
He doesn’t hear you let yourself in, he doesn’t even sense your presence, he’s too caught up in the motions, his eyes closed, his body running on a muscle memory. It isn’t until your fingers thread through his hair, lightly tugging his head back by his silver curls that he realises you’re in the room. Your hair falls across his features, shielding him away from the rest of the world and he smiles as your mouth seeks out his.
“Hi.” He whispers.
“Hi.” You whisper back.
You’re a force of nature in everything you do, and your kiss is no exception. It’s reckless, passionate and it ignites every single nerve ending inside his body like a bolt of electricity.
His headphones slip off his ears, clattering to the floor as he turns in his stool and raises to his feet, trapping you against the wall behind the drum kit. You grip the fabric of his tank in your fists, tearing it up over his head as he grinds against you urgently. Your fingers roam over the colourful tattoos etched into his back and you moan as you feel his thickness through the silky material of those basketball shorts, rubbing against the seam of your jeans.
“For the love of God, please tell me you took your PrEP while you were away.” He mutters in between kisses, his fingertips unfastening button of your jeans. “I need to be inside you so bad Sugar.”
“Every single day.” You promise, dragging your teeth across his bottom lip as he shoves the denim down your thighs. “Your viral load still under 200?”
“Had the test three days ago, undetectable.” He informs you, tugging off your panties.
That means there’s virtually no chance of HIV transmission so the two of you are ready to rock. You push down his basketball shorts, his cock springing loose and he hisses through his teeth as your hand wraps around him, guiding him to just the right spot.
“Poor baby.” You tease, your wetness rubbing over his sensitive tip. “You haven’t even touched yourself since I’ve been gone have you?”
“You know I like to save it for you.” He mumbles against your mouth. “Make sure you get the full welcome home experience.”
The denial always makes him feral, he gets a little wild, a little unhinged. Just the way you like him.
The first thrust is always the sweetest because of Jesse’s reaction to it, the hue of his eyes darken and he makes that noise, that filthy exhale as he slides home, filling you with every single inch of him. His hand clasps your jaw, thumb swiping against your lower lip before he pushes it inside. You suck it deeper, your eyes on his and his dick twitches inside of you.
“Oh Sugar.” He smiles as you bite down just a little. “I’m gonna fuck you like it’s the end of the god damn world.”
He hoists your legs up around his waist, slamming into you. You cry out, a loud eruption of ecstasy and he follows up with long, hard, strokes that that piston into you, raking over that naughty little spot deep inside. The noises you make, their obscene. Breathy groans, hollered curses and his name, always his name chanted like mantra as you get close, real close, tightening around his dick, gripping it.
His mouth covers yours as you come together, drinking down the rapture as he spills his release inside you, hips jerking as he fucks it deep. His lips ghost over your jaw and down your throat before he places a kiss over the lace geomantic moon at the side of your neck.
“Twenty years and this shit still doesn’t get old.” He chuckles into your ear, his teeth catching on the silver piercing in your lobe, tugging lightly.
You clench around him again and he starts to move slower this time, his arm looping underneath your right knee, hitching it higher so he can deepen the position.
“No babe.” You whisper, your head tipping back against the wall as he hits just the right spot. “It only gets better.”

I read this sweet one shot, and being as its me, I wanted to make it worse.
Eddie has been going up to Indy for months after graduation, and after finding a club that he liked, and where he felt like he fit - a little bit dirty, loud, no one looks close at a couple in a dark corner - that becomes his destination every time. He's still living in Hawkins, and he hasn't actually come out to the party, but he knows that they're all aware. Still, thats enough of a wall that he hasn't asked anyone to join him on his trips.
Plus, you know, he spends most of the time hooking up with Mark, and that would be awkward for whoever came with.
He and Mark are not dating, and while they talk and joke and get along at the club, and generally after they hook up - wherever that is each time - they don't call and chat in between. It's understood that if they're going to be there, it'll be by 9, on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. If the other one isn't there by then, okay, no pressure, and Eddie just enjoys the night with other friends.
It's not like Mark is the only person he's made out with at the club, but Mark is the default. Something closer to fuck buddies than friends with benefits. They've been hooking up for almost five months when Eddie goes there on a weekend, eager since he was busy last weekend, and Shaun, another regular he's friends with grabs him by the elbow and pulls him away from the bar to a quiet corner.
Which is when Eddie's world turns on it's head.
Mark is HIV+ Has been for a few months probably, and dropped off the earth when he found out. Almost everyone at the club and in the local community knows him, but can't find him, and are honestly pretty mad at him for vanishing like that. It left them to have to have conversations like this.
Mark wasn't entirely slutting it up, but he'd hooked up with quite a few people; the community is trying to work a list so they can find everyone.
Eddie, at least, was one of the certain ones, and one they knew would show up in the club.
And Shaun tries to make him feel better, because yes, its terrifying, yes, this is bad, but the club has a bowl of condoms, and if they were safe, then the risk is very very low. Eddie still needs to get tested, but the risk is very low. It's less than 1% if they were safe.*
Except they weren't always safe. Mostly. Not always. They'd been doing it a while, shared some trust, neither had any of symptoms of anything, STD or otherwise. That makes it more likely. And the stats are for Each time. Eddie knows how probability works, and how many times he and Mark had sex, and knows that the odds are not great. Luck has never been on his side.
Eddie sleeps in his van that night so he can go to the clinic in the morning to get tested. Using the word sleep loosely, since he spent most of it flipping between furious, terrified, and worried for Mark. There's no way that Mark would have kept hooking up with him if he'd known, and like Shaun said, Mark has now vanished, which can't be good for him.
After he leaves the clinic, Eddie considers staying in Indy, sleeping in his car, and hiding from everyone back in Hawkins. That doesn't make sense because they're going to call his house with the results, but he can't think. He knows they know he's gay, but he never actually told them. And if he goes back, someone is going to notice if he's being weird, and he'd have to come out, and admit to this at the same time.
Eventually, he calls Robin from a payphone. She came out to the group over the summer, and he knows the stories about how much lesbians have supported gay men during this. He would have freaked out that she would freak out about it (think rabies) but he's too distracted and scared. She picks up, and he just starts talking. Word vomit. Comes out, talks about going to Indy, calls himself a slut, tells her about Mark, tells her what Shaun said.
There's a weird silence, and then she tells him to get home. Get back to Hawkins.
He's grateful for someone telling him what to do. Drives back way faster than he should have.
He's barely gotten his van parked when the trailer door opens, not that he's looking at it. Its too much, and being back home makes it feel closer for some reason. Which means that it's Robin who pulls open the van door to get to him.
Except.
That's not just Robin.
Steve, who was in Robin's room when Eddie called and has been freaking the fuck out since he overheard, pulls him out of the van and directly into a hug between both of them.
(I don't know how to proceed, so I'm stopping here)
*this note is that the rate known today is about .39% with condoms and about 1.4% without for the receptive partner in anal sex. Shaun does not have an exact number, and fear exaggerates odds in human brains
#Eddie Munson#hiv/aids#ficlet#not complete#but you can insert the happy outcome#I'm not headed towards evil with this
