combat has been,,,, a process. all theoretical of course, but I’ve already gone through like. multiple, totally different systems, all further complicated by all the needlessly specific worldbuilding and lore details I want them to include, as well as pet stuff like the companions system, but after some time away from it I’ve kind of settled on something I,,,,,,, am mostly happy with? for now.

obviously Hollow Knight excels at a deceptively complex, unique-feeling 2d platformer combat system, and the temptation is always there to just. do that. but enough people have played Hollow Knight to see that and also. I don’t know. that’s kind of shitty and making cartoons of cartoons behavior so I thought I would parse through some critical dev thought process, which has been:

in the moment of initiating a combat encounter, what decision can the player make?

how can concurrent progressions in enemy design and combat abilities provide new and interesting challenges for the player?

how can the combat system integrate into world traversal? (given the metroidvania format of predominantly open-world exploration)

uhh. I switched apps for a minute and now I forget the structure this ramble was taking. oh right uhhh so for the first question, I looked at some other games I’ll be taking most inspiration from, and those include Hollow Knight and the Souls series, given the fast-paced action and lack of guarding ability let’s sayuhhhhhh Bloodborne, for specificity and no other reason beyond that I like it. in HK, in a typical combat encounter, the player 1. identifies the enemy 2. determines the benefit of going in for a hit vs. the cost of taking an enemy’s attack 3. either attacks, or dodges, dodging in this game primarily taking the form of an aerial maneuver (further options diversifying your options later on in the game, most notably the shade cloak allowing you to dodgeroll Through enemies, but by nature of being such a late game inclusion I didn’t feel like it was much of a necessity beyond a couple particular bosses, namely Watcher Knights, Nightmare King, Traitor Lord of course, though overall it did introduce a fascinating change to the way I played the game as a whole). under normal circumstances, at any given moment in a fight, the options are hit or dodge, and the same is largely true for Boodblorne, though without most of the mobility options afforded in Hollow Knight. the translation of a stamina gauge limiting your dodge range to the elimination of an entire dimension of space feels like a fair exchange here, and it makes sense. of course HK doesn’t have a stamina gauge; the game would be unplayably hard if it did, as three dimensional placement singlehandedly allowing you the ability to avoid an attack is impossible, or at least incredibly more limited, in a two-dimensional format.

basically what I’m saying is: two games I like a lot with systems I wanna emulate hve a similar format. in a fight, you can attack, or you can take steps to reposition yourself to avoid your opponent’s moves. it. occurs to me that this isn’t revelatory. but it’s gotten me to think like a game developer a bit more!!! at least!! oughh.

  According to a consumer trends survey conducted by travel site Klook, Singapore (HG), Japan, and Hong Kong (HK) are the favored overseas destinations for Filipinos due to proximity and visa exemptions. Klook reported that compared to February 2019, app downloads were up 22% in February 2023. The fourth quarter of 2022 saw a 62% increase in bookings over the previous quarter. When compared to pre-pandemic levels, monthly reservations are expected to rise by 27% by the end of the year, according to Michelle Ho, general manager for Klook in the Philippines and Thailand. This growth will be driven by both domestic and international travel. At a conference on March 14, she stated, "Locally, the usual suspects like Manila Ocean Park, Sky Ranch Tagaytay, and Boracay packages would continue to push the development. In order to better digitalize local tourism and promote recovery, Klook also announced that it would be stepping up some of its more recent initiatives to focus on emerging locations in addition to well-known ones.
