Chapter 5, Part 1 Word count: 961
They ate their fill of honey bread and peanut-butter-crackers and then set about transferring gasoline; using rubber tubing ripped from a dry gas pump, they managed the job with no more sweating and spilling and bickering than absolutely necessary. Shasta plopped onto Bree’s seat, wiping oil across his uniform.
“You’ve covered your tracks?” Bree asked.
“I’ll hide Emeth’s bike,” Aravis said, patting the fender wistfully. “No point in leaving it out to draw attention.” She hauled the motorcycle into the broken-down gas station and emerged with dust-covered boots. “All set.” She climbed onto the bike behind him. Shasta tapped the nav screen and the engine sputtered, then died.
His heart skipped a beat. “Bree?” He thumped the bike’s side and keyed in his fingerprint again. The engine roared to life. He let out a sigh of relief, wrapping his fingers around the handlebars, and they shot out of the gas station’s shade into the burning sunlight. 
“What just happened?” Aravis demanded, peering over his shoulder.
“The engine’s output is uneven,” Bree said. “I’m running diagnostics, but--”
“But it’s probably no big deal?” Shasta guessed.
“I wasn’t going to say that.” There was a pregnant pause. “Anyway, it’s 10:28 now. To arrive at the capital gate the day after tomorrow, we can only spend about three hours not-driving. That’s three hours for all our stops.” Shasta gave a low whistle. “Pay attention to whether you’re getting thirsty, hungry or tired. Aravis, you know more about the dangers of exhaustion and highway hypnosis than Shasta.”
“I’ll keep him awake,” she said. “Are you sure I can’t drive?”
“Sure, just let me override my programming for you.”
“That sounds like a no to me,” Shasta said. “Pass me a cracker?”
time 10:31 “Make sure you’re shifting your gaze every few minutes,” Aravis instructed, crunching on crackers behind him. “What’s your favorite color?”
“What does that have to do with driving hypnosis?”
“Talking keeps you alert. That’s why speeders are always jabbering away on their radio. If Emeth hadn’t been trying to be stealthy, you can bet he would have been gossiping with his co-workers when he found you. Favorite color?”
He squinted at the sun-drenched road ahead. “Maybe… a sort of honey-gold?”
time 10:35 “Would you rather live in the mountains or by the ocean?”
“Mountains,” he said immediately.
“That was a stupid question, wasn’t it?”
time 14:03 When Shasta returned to the bike after their first stop that evening, Aravis spat out a mouthful of uncooked pasta.  “Don’t eat that,” she advised, sticking her pasta-specked tongue out when he grinned. “Are you ready?”
He splashed water over his face, hiding a smile. “Good to go.” Then they were off again. The sky faded from blue to gold to gauzy pink, and then the light seeped away and stars began to emerge, softening the jagged silhouette of the mountains rising on the horizon. Back home-- back at the seascraper-- he rarely had the chance to just watch the sun set. Daylight wasn’t for the wasting, the fisherman said. What a lovely thing, to be able to waste time on sunsets.
He yawned. The white thread that wound across Bree’s nav screen looked like it would take them to the foothills of the mountains at least. A cool wind pulled at his sleeves; the heat of day faded quickly from dry inland air. It didn’t smell of brine. He hadn’t noticed where the breeze stopped carrying the scent of salt.
time 15:48 “Uh, fifteen or sixteen, I think? The fisherman took me in almost fourteen years ago, but I was already a year or two old by then.”
“Do you have any memories from before then?”
He thought back to the earliest sounds and shapes he had filed away. “The first thing I remember is... the ocean, I think. All glittering and smelling of fish. When I was little I kept crawling into the water when the fisherman wasn’t looking. If I hadn’t been such a fat little baby I probably would…” A memory surfaced: scraps of deep green, darker than algae or swaying beds of kelp. He tried to focus on the image and it vanished, scattering like a shoal of fish. He couldn’t think of anything that color.
“You probably would what?” Aravis asked.
He shook his head to clear it. “Would’ve drowned. The fisherman didn’t like babies much.”
“He adopted you, didn’t he?”
“Because he would get promoted for community service, not because he wanted a kid.”
“That’s awful.”
“It’s life,” he said, shrugging.
time 17:15 “No, it’s definitely a real place,” Shasta insisted. “I had that picture pasted next to the hammock for years. When the trap door was open a square of light slid across it at sunrise.”
“Maybe it was. But it had to have been an old picture. There aren’t that many trees in one place anywhere, now. They disappeared with the coasts, and the reefs, and the oil fields.”
A shadowy sea of branches rippled in Shasta’s memory. “Bree, is that true? There aren’t any giant tree wilds left?”
“Forests,” Bree said. “That’s what they called them.” Shasta’s chest felt hollow, all of a sudden.
“They’re gone?”
time 0:00 “It’s midnight,” Bree said. Shasta startled to attention. “We’ve made good time so far. I’ve been processing environmental input slowly; I suspect the speeder’s override attempts when I was captured are the cause. Otherwise, all functions seem to be holding up. Have you both been staying hydrated?”
“Yes, sir,” Shasta said.

“Probably, like, two,” he said.
“Pshh, coward. I could fit at least four.”

Introduction to Compression Moulding

Moulding is the process of shaping liquid or soft raw materials by using a fixed frame called a mould or a matrix. The mould is made of a metal container where liquid, plastic, metal, ceramic, or glass is poured. The goal is to create multiple uniform copies of the product as the final product.  The liquid cools down and takes the shape of the mould or the container. The product is removed by using release agents or ejection pins.
A product can be moulded in different ways. The different types of moulding methods of:
Injection Moulding

Injection moulding is a manufacturing process in which molten material is injected into a mould.  A lot of materials can be used for injecting. For example, metals, glass, elastomers, confections, thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers. The material is placed in a heated barrel, mixed using a helical screw, and injected into a mould cavity. This material is cooled and hardened to the shape of the cavity.
Blow Moulding
Stretch blow moulding is a manufacturing process in which a hollow plastic tube is stretched radially and axially to give it the shape of the final product, which usually is a hollow bottle or container of round shape or other complicated hollow shapes.
Thermoforming
Thermoforming is a manufacturing process in which a plastic sheet is heated to a flexible forming temperature, to mould in a specific shape as a usable product.
Roto-Moulding
Roto-moulding or rotational moulding is a manufacturing process in which a heated hollow mould is filled with a shot weight of the material. It is rotated around two perpendicular axes, leading the liquid material to disperse and stick to the walls of the mould.
Extrusion Moulding
Extrusion moulding is a manufacturing process is used to make fibres, curtain tracks, rods, pipes, hoses, and drinking straws. The melted granules are forced through a die to form a long tube-like shape. The shape of the die determines the shape of the tube. This extrusion is then cooled and formed into a solid shape. This tube may be printed upon, and cut into equal pieces. Optical fibre is one of the most famous extrusion moulding products.
Compression Moulding
Compression moulding is a manufacturing process in which the moulding material is preheated. The material is placed in an open heated cavity. The mould is closed with a top force or a plug member. Pressure is applied to the material in the mould, while heat and pressure are maintained until the material is converted into the final product. Plastic bottles manufacturers in India use compression to manufacture plastic bottles.
Different materials require different types of compression moulding. For example, Melamine wear is a thermosetting plastic product that requires compression moulding whereas auto parts require the application of compression moulding.
Application of Compression Moulding
The application of compression moulding is mainly used in manufacturing automobile parts like spoilers, scoops, fenders, hoops, and many such small and important parts. The Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody gives Dodge something no other American rival offers: a full-size sedan with astronomical horsepower. Ford is getting out of the sedan business altogether and Chevrolet is trimming back its portfolio, with both companies shifting focus towards crossovers and SUVs. Thankfully, Dodge isn’t following that lead.

The new-for-2020 Widebody adds 3.5 inches of width compared to the standard Charger. In addition to the fender flares, the Widebody gets a unique front fascia with a mail-slot grille providing more direct route radiator cooling, as well as a new rear spoiler and side sills to better blend with the added width. The result is a more menacing design that gets many nods of approval wherever this sedan goes.
Besides a more hulking stance, the wider exterior shell allows for the installation of thicker wheels and tires. In the Hellcat’s case, the previously standard 20-by-9.5-inch wheels wrapped with 275/40-series tires are replaced by 20-by-11-inch wheels covered in 305/50-series rubber.

A new wheel and tire package also means the engineers had to rework the Hellcat’s suspension, resulting in new tuning for the three-mode Bilstein adaptive dampers, 32% stiffer front springs and larger anti-roll bars. Other chassis tweaks include a multimode electric power steering system in place of the old full-hydraulic setup, as well as brake upgrades with six-piston front Brembo calipers biting down on 15.4-inch, two-piece rotors.
What’s the result of chassis revisions and meatier rubber? A much more competent Charger that instills more confidence through corners. With Track mode activated, steering response is nearly immediate, and the dampers keep the 4,587-pound big boy from being clumsy in turns. The Pirelli P Zero tires’ wider contact patches give the Charger commendable stick before the fronts begin plowing forward, and brake muscle is stout, quickly getting the car slowed down. Where the Charger’s size can’t be disguised is under braking and side-to-side weight transfers, but avoid slalom exercises and you’ll be fine.
The Hellcat Widebody is stiff in Track mode, transmitting impacts from every road rut into the cabin. Additionally, in Track mode, the steering weight is on the heavy side for street use — unless you want Popeye-sized forearms. Summon the Hellcat’s Sport setting for the best balance of performance and comfort. You’ll want Street mode for the gentlest behavior, but be forewarned that ride quality isn’t magic-carpet cushy and the steering still has quite a bit of weight with a small dead spot on center.
A wider body allows for the installation of wider tires.

Visual and handling changes aside, the main reason anyone buys a Hellcat is for the 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V8 under the hood. It still makes 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque for 2020, but hold out for a 2021 model and you’ll get 717 hp in the Hellcat and 797 hp in the new Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye. 
The more powerful 2021 SRT Chargers won’t arrive in dealers until Spring, meaning if you want a Hellcat now, it’s going to be an example with 707 horses, which is difficult to pooh-pooh. Not with a 0-to-60-mph time of 3.6 seconds and a 10.96-second quarter-mile run. The Charger Hellcat is a brute that makes the right noises burbling at idle, which becomes supercharger whine during acceleration with a menacing exhaust note to boot. Throttle response is nearly instant, and a tidal wave of power is available at all parts of the rev band to forcefully push this sedan forward or spin the rear tires for smokey burnouts and donuts.
The supercharged V8 is still the star of the Hellcat show.

Power is routed to the Hellcat’s rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission that, in Track mode, rips off rapid but not completely seamless shifts. You can shift it yourself with the steering wheel-mounted paddles, which offer respectable response to commands and rev-matching on downshifts. My advice is to let the computer do all the shifting, though, because the transmission is nicely programmed. 
For the times you aren’t trying to find a nice piece of pavement on which to perform smoke shows, the Street setting gives the drivetrain a more mellow personality. Gearbox shifts are smoother and slightly muted. Not surprisingly, the biggest strike against the Charger SRT is poor fuel economy, which is apparent with how rapidly the fuel gauge needle drops. EPA fuel economy estimates have this 707-hp beast returning 12 miles per gallon in the city and 21 mpg on the highway — numbers low enough for the Charger to be slapped with a $2,100 gas guzzler tax. Does that matter to a typical Hellcat shopper? Not likely.
Same as it ever was
Inside is where the Charger is showing its age. It’s roomy, with a straightforward layout and clearly marked controls. The front bucket seats are comfortable with generous side bolsters and trimmed with nice leather, while lots of soft-touch surfaces, an optional suede headliner and real carbon fiber trim bring some premium touches to this test car. There’s also a nice big trunk in the back with 16.5 cubic feet of space. Unfortunately, the interior design is a bit stale now and there are some budget-rate areas, such as the hollow window controls and flimsy plastic lower door panel compartments.
The cabin is getting long in tooth, but the infotainment technology is still on point.

What isn’t stale is the Uconnect infotainment system with its crisp-looking and responsive 8.4-inch touchscreen controlling a bumping 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio setup, navigation system that quickly calculates routes, Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And to keep anyone phones or tablets from going dead in the Charger, there are numerous USB and 12-volt outlets within easy reach of people in both rows of seats. 
Sadly, anyone looking for a big driver-assistance tech menu will be disappointed. The Charger Hellcat comes with the federally mandated backup camera and standard blind-spot monitoring and that’s it. Things like adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning and forward-collision warning are not available.
Big performance bang for your buck
Really, when you think about what the 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody brings to the table for $73,590 (including $1,495 for destination and gas guzzler tax), it’s a performance bargain. And that’s even truer with the Widebody, which allows the Charger to take corners in a respectable fashion thanks to its suspension changes and bigger tires.

Yes, the Charger Hellcat Widebody has plenty of shortcomings, but when I walk towards this menacing machine in the parking lot, I don’t think about them. When I engage launch control and let the supercharged V8 rocket me forward, I also don’t think about them because I’m too busy laughing with glee. The Charger Hellcat Widebody is an immensely entertaining machine.

Luuc Muis redesigns the Moto Guzzi V85 TT for Vanguard
Moto Guzzi’s V85 TT has a lot going for it: a motor with tons of character, a capable chassis, and a look that mixes ‘adventure’ and ‘retro.’ But with such a unique aesthetic, we wouldn’t have a clue where to even begin customizing it.
To make an impact with the V85 TT, you really have to go deep. So that’s exactly what Luuc Muis did with this custom V85, built for the Dutch menswear label Vanguard Clothing. The young custom builder has a background in product design, a fresh outlook and one hella sharp eye—as evident by this wild Indian Scout bobber that he built last year.
Luuc landed the V85 TT project after winning a design contest run by Vanguard. They’d picked a handful of custom builders in the Benelux region to each create a concept, then asked the public vote for their favorites. Luuc took gold against some seriously stiff competition.
Pretty soon he had a brand new V85 TT on the bench, and the daunting task of translating his outrageous design into reality. A part-time builder until now, the win also convinced him to finally ditch his day job, and go full time as LM Creations.
Step one: research. “When I received the Moto Guzzi,” Luuc says, “I immediately rode it to the first dirt road I could find (it was raining at the time) and tested all its capabilities. I wanted to add a bit more fun factor into the bike as well.”
“It was quite tame, and the bike’s reliable ECU system takes over a bit too much for my liking when you’re trying to break out and slide trough a corner.”
Once Luuc had washed all the mud off the Guzzi, he stripped it down and started ordering in parts. On went a set of grippy Pirelli Scorpion STR Rally tires, and a fully tunable custom rear shock from TFX Suspension. Next, Luuc fettled the electronics to switch off the traction control and ABS.
With that out of the way, it was time to start on the heavy lifting. Surprisingly though, Luuc only had to make minimal changes to the back of the frame to nail the lines he was after. “95 percent of the frame is still stock,” he says. “It now has a bumper-like look, which is a great brace to pull it out of the mud if necessary.”
Floating just above the subframe is a custom seat, upholstered by the go-to guy in the region: Jeroen at Silvermachine. It has a cutout for a key release, so that you can access the fuel tank, which now sits under the seat. Luuc fabricated a steel fuel cell from scratch—rubber-mounting it to the frame, and repurposing the OEM fuel pump.
That left him space to go wild up front, where two plastic panels previously covered the stock fuel tank and air box. First off, the intake was flipped around, and throttle bodies relocated to between the cylinders. Then Luuc built a wireframe and paper template, before shaping a set of new faux tank covers.
The design is striking, with a hollow section right through the middle to add more visual lightness. It sports a pretty unique finish too—an inlay of oak and walnut chips, and bits of carbon fiber, set in a resin.
“The idea behind the wood is that this was part of the new product line of Vanguard,” explains Luuc, “and had to be integrated into the bike. On the inlays you will also find two bronze handmade Vanguard logos, made by Lisa Stolle—a friend and local jewelry artist.”
The body kit’s finished off with a sharp headlight nacelle and front fender, designed to match the Guzzi’s original hand guards. Luuc shaped the parts out of clay first, then 3D scanned them, drew up a model in Fusion 360 CAD/CAM software, and 3D printed the final parts. He also 3D scanned the motor’s rocker covers, designed new ones, 3D printed prototypes, and had Vinco Racing mill the final parts.
Other upgrades include new handlebars and risers, grips, a Motogadget speedo, and LED optics for the headlight.
All the Moto Guzzi needed now was a decent exhaust—so Luuc reached out to Akrapovič, who sent him a modified prototype of their new V85 TT muffler. He made up new headers for it, then built a skid plate to protect them at the bottom.
Luuc kept the rest of the Guzzi’s finishes simple to complement the effect on the ‘tank.’ So everything was done in either black or white, with some subtle logos on the skid plate. To add those, Luuc polishing the part, laid down decals to protect the polished finished, and sand blasted the rest of the surface area.
We love Luuc’s interpretation of the V85 TT because it’s completely unexpected, and wholly exciting. He’s somehow taken an already attractive adventure bike, and turned it into an even better looking scrambler.

This Versatile ’55 Chevy Bel Air Can Do It All
Cool cars wind up in our garages for lots of reasons. Some are functional transportation, some only drive a quarter-mile at a time, while others are rarely seen outside the show circuit. Toby Jones has always been intrigued with the ’55 Chevy and dreamed of creating a uniquely versatile version of this popular classic. Self-employed and owner of TJ Plumbing in Holly Hill, Florida, Jones has been a longtime enthusiast even though this is his first full custom vehicle. Purchased way back in 2006, the car has received a series of underway upgrades designed to make it the perfect long-haul cruiser. He enjoys traveling to distant car shows around the country, including one 3,200-mile jaunt from Florida to Michigan on the Power Tour. Each long trip suggested more opportunities for improvement, culminating in a car that is loaded with style, handling, power, and a raft of elegant details.
The story begins back in 2004 when the search began in earnest. It took almost two years, but he finally found a ’55 in fairly good shape. With a few bolt-on parts, it was the perfect ride for local cruise events. Before long, however, the 60-year-old technology reared its ugly head and it was time for an infusion of modern aftermarket improvements. It was a major undertaking. Working in his garage, Jones separated the body from the chassis and began comprehensive revisions to the frame. His efforts would make the car handle like a slot car while his attention to detail would make the underside of the car as photogenic as the top. The original factory crossmembers were eliminated and replaced with 1.5-inch tubular K-members, followed by a double framerail and tubular torque box. All the holes were filled, the body mounts boxed in, and the frame was painted a shiny silver metallic.
Since autocross-level maneuverability was the goal, the long list of high-performance handling upgrades began with Global West tubular control arms up front along with drop spindles and power rack-and-pinion steering. A NASCAR Cup Series 1 1/4-inch splined front sway bar with 1/2-inch plate arms teamed up with a Sportsman Series drag race rear bar to ensure flat cornering. The bars were augmented with QA1 adjustable coilovers on all four corners.
To handle the planned powerplant, a rebuilt 9-inch Ford rear was fitted with 3.55 gears, 31-spline Strange axles, and a Currie center chunk, all held in place by a RideTech parallel four-link. Since brakes are an important part of going fast, stopping power was guaranteed with Wilwood discs using drilled-and-slotted rotors and six-piston calipers.
A Rock Valley stainless steel fuel tank with a fuel-injection pump inside feeds the new engine. Transforming the chassis into a roller are the Billet Specialties Grand Prix 18- and 20-inch wheels, polished with brushed centers and wrapped in Nitto rubber. One glance will convince you that the underside of the car is a work of art.
With such a high degree of sophistication in the chassis and suspension, an equally impressive powerplant was a must. Jones started out with a 355ci Chevy small-block, decked and align-honed by Express Racing Engines in DeLand, Florida. Internally, it is fitted with an aftermarket crank, machined and balanced connecting rods, and TRW flat-top pistons. A Crane cam with a double roller timing chain bumps the stainless steel valves in the Holley aluminum 20-degree cylinder heads using Crane Cams Gold series 1.5:1 rockers. Sending fuel to the ACCEL 36-lb/hr injectors is a polished Holley Avenger EFI Stealth Ram system, which is fed fresh, cool air from a custom intake screened by a pair of K&N filters. ACCEL EFI electronic ignition lights the fire with Hooker silver ceramic-coated headers dumping spent gases into a black ceramic 2.5-inch exhaust system. The Pypes mufflers announce the car’s arrival with an impressive performance rumble.
Jones chose a PRC radiator and A/C condenser combination along with an aluminum mechanical water pump and two 12-inch electric fans to ensure temps stay in the green. Powering all the accessories is a polished Billet Specialties V-drive belt system. Unique items include that hand-fabricated air intake with a pair of K&N filters and carbon-fiber tubes as well as custom-made valve covers for the perfect finishing touch. Glass-smooth inner fender panels and the recessed firewall add to the eye appeal of the beautiful V-8. Added up, the combo delivers 475 horsepower to the 4L60E four-speed automatic, upgraded with a ProTorque billet 10-inch converter. Jones gets lightning shifts (125-milliseconds) thanks to the Twist Machine Shrifter paddle shifters managed by a Compushift II trans controller.
Throughout the many improvements, the “complete, but never finished” car would be pressed into service, heading off to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, for the Grand Rod Run or North Carolina’s Tail of the Dragon. In 2011, Jones took the car on its longest adventure, the Power Tour from Florida to Michigan, driving 3,200 miles in 10 days. Mechanically, the car was a pleasure and handled the long distance ride without breathing hard, but traveling took its toll. Cosmetics became the next rejuvenation concern. Chips and dings, coupled with repair efforts by previous owners meant it was time to give the old girl a new look.
In 2012, he went back to the garage, beginning a two-year effort that included new quarters, new rear pan, and new fenders, all designed to perfect the exterior. At the same time, mediablasting, PPG epoxy paint, and Ballistic Hollow Point sound deadening got the interior ready for its new look. Jones built his own panels for The Upholstery Man in South Daytona, Florida, to wrap in a combination of saddle vinyl and pleather. To monitor the high-performance engine, he redid the dash using Haneline 4-inch analog gauges inset into a carbon-fiber housing. The combination of a Billet Specialties wheel, paddle shifters, and ididit column keeps the driver in close touch while Vintage Air A/C ensures occupants stay cool during warm summer adventures.
Concert hall level entertainment during those long days on the Power Tour comes from the sophisticated Alpine 7-inch VGA touch screen monitor in the center console that teams up with the Command unit in the armrest and the Alpine Pro VPA-B222 brain mounted in the trunk. In addition to satellite radio, CD player, Bluetooth connectivity, and rearview camera, the Alpine controls the ARC Audio amp, also in the trunk. It powers the ARC Audio speaker mix consisting of a 12-inch sub, 6x9s in the rear package tray, and 6-inch components in the kicks. The trunk was upholstered to match and now holds a pair of Optima batteries hidden behind the rear wall with the rest of the stereo electronics. The final step in this years-long process was the striking Axalta Orange Metallic Sunburst paint.
Toby and his wife, Sheri, enjoy taking the car to local cruise-ins and car shows. Has it become too pretty to drive? Hardly. Plans are afoot to participate in the Pigeon Forge Grand Rod Run in Sept 2018 and Toby would like to do another Power Tour. Now that it’s once again complete, he is more than happy with the results. “I wanted this car to be like no other and I wanted people to see a different approach to custom work.” We think his versatile ’55 does just that!
