Today we celebrate our Venerable Father among the Saints, Gerasimus of Cephalonia. Saint Gerasimus grew up a pious young man and travelled to Mount Argos to become a monk. He then visited the Holy Lands, where he became an attendant at the Holy Sepulchre. Here, he was ordained a deacon and priest by Patriarch Germanus of Jerusalem. For forty days, Saint Gerasimus struggled in the desert beyond the Jordan, just like his namesake Saint, and then requested a blessing to live a life of solitude on the island of Zakynthos. Having spent much time in prayer and fasting, Saint Gerasimus felt a calling to travel to the nearby island of Cephalonia where he lived in a cave. He built a women's monastery where he lived in asceticism for thirty years. Here, he achieved the heights of spirituality, being granted the gifts of wonderworking and healing. At the age of 71, the venerable one reposed in the Lord on August 15th. Because this is the feast of the Dormition, his celebration was moved to August 16th, but is more commonly celebrated on October 20th on the uncovering of his holy relics which were found incorrupt. Slowly posting my journey through the Holy Land still... Venerated the rock on which Jesus was placed after he was taken down from the cross and prepared for burial. We celebrated High Mass outside of the Empty Tomb, where Jesus was buried. I was one of the first in line to venerate Mount Calvary, where Jesus was crucified and died, so while everyone else was still upstairs (atop the mountain), I made my way down towards the tomb for some alone time to pray. I made it down just in time to enter the tomb before they closed it to prepare for mass. I was able to enter and actually spend time inside the tomb without being rushed like everyone else was. God knew I needed this moment. After Mass, we all lined up and I was able to enter the tomb a second time. This time was rushed as everyone else was lined up to venerate as well. That first moment inside the tomb was meant for me alone and I'm grateful to have had that. PS photos aren't allowed in the tomb; I'll answer to God later. 😬 Before leaving the church, we ran into a childhood friend of mine, Father James Arriola. It was great seeing him after all these years. Months after the pilgrimage, the spirit remains with me still. Praying at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre: My Experience

Despite temperatures touching 90 degrees, prayers don’t stop at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Christian Quarter of the old city. It is hard to believe that these modest walls house the site where Christianity’s four most important events — the crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, are said to have occurred.

Today we celebrate the Righteous Martha and Mary of Bethany, sisters of Lazarus. Saints Martha and Mary were two of the women that followed Christ and attended to His and the disciples’ needs. They gave themselves entirely over to Jesus Christ and even risked their lives by travelling to the Holy Tomb of Christ early in the morning to anoint His holy body with myrrh and spices. For this, they were counted worthy to be the heralds of good news and the first to hear the joy of the Resurrection. The very spot on Mount Calvary where Jesus was crucified and died on the cross for the sake of all mankind. Being in the very place where Jesus died for us, after just walking the Via Dolorosa (Way of the Cross), was a very powerful moment. Amazing love. 2021 was a hard year for me. A year of loss. I lost a few people I loved deeply. Grieving these losses really got the best of me. But in this last year, I've done what I felt was take care of my mental and spiritual health - I've strengthened my relationship with God, went on trips for my mental clarity, and visited and prayed at many holy sites. I did what was necessary to take care of myself. Since then, my burdens have lightened and life is beautiful again. No therapists, no medication, just the little faith I have in God. I pray that God sustains me always and that I cling to the cross in times of darkness.
