LockBit Ransomware Gang Claims Responsibility for Wichita, KS Cyberattack
Tumblr media
The notorious LockBit ransomware gang has claimed responsibility for a devastating cyberattack on the City of Wichita, Kansas, the largest city in the state with a population of nearly 400,000. This ransomware attack has forced the City's authorities to shut down crucial IT systems used for online bill payment, including court fines, water bills, and public transportation. Wichita, a major cultural, economic, and transportation hub in the region, and home to several aircraft factories, announced the disruptive ransomware attack last Sunday, May 5, 2024. In response, the City's IT specialists promptly shut down computers used in online services to contain the damage and stop the spread of the attack, as stated in their announcement: "This decision was not made lightly but was necessary to ensure that systems are securely vetted before returning to service." LockBit Ransomware Gang Threatens Data Leak Earlier today, the LockBit ransomware group added Wichita to its extortion portal, threatening to publish all stolen files on the site by May 15, 2024, unless the City pays the ransom. This unusually quick listing of a ransomware victim, merely three days after the attack, is believed to be in retaliation for the recent international law enforcement operation that named and sanctioned the leader of the LockBit ransomware operation, a 31-year-old Russian national named Dmitry Yuryevich Khoroshev, who uses the online alias "LockBitSupp."
Tumblr media
Lockbit Lists the City of Wichita as one of its victims.
Widespread Service Disruptions in Wichita
Meanwhile, Wichita continues to face significant disruptions, with the latest status update indicating that the following services remain unavailable: - Auto payments for water bills are suspended. - Public Wi-Fi at certain locations (Airport terminal, Advanced Learning Library, Evergreen, and Walters branches of the Library). - The online catalog, databases, and some digital services of the Library. - Email communications through the city network for Library staff. - Self-service print release stations and self-check stations at the Library. - Automated materials handler at the Advanced Learning Library. - Most incoming phone call capability for the Library. - Wi-Fi and phone services at neighborhood resource centers. - Public services, including golf courses, parks, courts, and the water district, require residents to pay in cash or by check while online payment platforms are shut down. Additionally, any Request for Bid, Proposal, or Qualifications with a due date of May 10, 2024, has been deferred until May 17, 2024, and the 'Bid Opening' scheduled for Friday, May 10, 2024, has been canceled. Public safety services like the Wichita Fire Department (WFD) and Wichita Police Department (WPD) have resorted to using "pen and paper" reports, and the Wichita Transit buses and landfill services can only accept cash payments. Data Theft and Potential Leak While the City is still investigating whether data was stolen in the attack, the LockBit ransomware gang is known for stealing data before deploying their encryptors. Therefore, if a ransom is not paid, data will likely be leaked in the future on the ransomware gang's data leak site, exacerbating the already severe impact of this cyberattack on the City of Wichita. Behind the Scenes with the Maxxis Factory Racing Team
Two years ago when Maxxis Tires set out to create a new factory racing team dedicated to multiple off-road disciplines, they knew it would be a challenge of logistics. They realized they’d need a competent, problem-solving team manager, well-versed in the tools and tricks for navigating a travel-heavy multidisciplinary season (like shipping bikes and gear with Bikeflights). They found that manager in industry veteran Drew Esherick.
Tumblr media
The team, whose inaugural season was 2022, consists this year of four elite racers covering the mountain bike disciplines of enduro and cross country, and gravel. Racers Lia Westerman and Cole Peterson focus on enduro-style events such as the Big Mountain Enduro series and Enduro World Series. Racers Haley Smith and Andrew L’Esperance focus on cross country-style mountain bike races as well as gravel races such as Unbound and Big Sugar. The calendar has both sets of racers ping-ponging across the US and the world.
When asked about the logical challenges of managing a team like that, Esherick simultaneously expresses awe and confidence.
“It’s insane. It's running two teams, basically. So it's booking flights going all over the world for them, moving equipment around, making sure I've got the right spares in the van,” Esherick says.
“I mean, it can get very complicated, especially when we’re doing multi-leg flights, going from one event to the next. So it's like flying from, you know, Phoenix to Munich and then Munich to Salt Lake City.”
Tumblr media
In addition to Esherick’s duties as a race team manager, he also serves as the head mechanic, piloting a van around the country, and world, ensuring that it’s fully stocked with whatever a racer might need for a particular race. With a massive tangle of responsibilities on his shoulders, one thing he doesn’t have to waste time on is shipping logistics.
“It's just a massive help to have Bikeflights as an option for us. It just streamlined things. When I drop something off, I can see when it ships. If I send a label to an athlete to ship something back to me or to get serviced, I get an automated email anytime it moves. It's really super helpful to keep track of where everything is.”
While Bikeflights was an integral part of the Maxxis Factory Team Racing system since the beginning, the Bikeflights logo is emblazoned on their helmets this year, marking an official partnership for the 2023 season.
Tumblr media
As a team that is constantly on-the-go, often in different directions and crossing international borders, Esherick appreciates the time savings Bikeflights provides with reliably great rates and international specialists on Support.
“I mean it would just be a huge waste of time just shopping around for different rates through different carriers, trying to figure out the logistics of shipping something across a border. Without Bikeflights, it would just eat up time that I don't have.”
Esherick was eager to relay a recent anecdote exemplifying the effortless shipping logistics via Bikeflights that he employs while on the road.
“I received a couple of frames at Sea Otter. Rather than ship those home, and then ship the bikes out, I'll ship two build kits now to build those bikes on the road. And I'm leaving the van in Kansas ahead of Unbound, and I'll go home. While I'm home, I'll pack stuff that we need to restock the van – tires and other extra spare parts – and I'll ship that ahead to Unbound.”
Tumblr media
The Maxxis Factory Team might only have one season under their belts, but with logistics whisper Esherick and a roster of accomplished racers, they’re looking to make some noise.
“We've done a fair amount of racing already, but we do have the bulk of our two big domestic series still left; the Life Time Series where Haley was overall champ last year and then the Big Mountain Enduro series where Cole was overall champ last year. So expectations are high.”
To follow Maxxis Factory Team and see where they might be racing next, check out their website and follow @maxxisfactoryracing on Instagram.

Be Mindful Of 'Elderspeak' When Talking To An 'Older' Adult'
Be Mindful Of 'Elderspeak' When Talking To An 'Older' Adult'
"Elderspeak" is a special pattern of speech comparable to baby talk that younger individuals frequently take on when talking to the senior. The tone of elderspeak can appear contemptuous, express undesirable pity, and potentially foster animosity among older adults. The qualities of elderspeak consist of: Slow and cautious speech, Simplified grammar, Assumption of vulnerability, Exaggerated caring words ("sweetheart," "honey," "dear," "buddy"). Using "we" or "us" rather of "you" Numerous older adults endure this treatment daily, even when they're flawlessly qualified of recognizing typical speech patterns.
When we speak with each other, we intuitively modify our speech to better share our words. In situations where interaction could be hard, we immediately use simple kinds of speech so somebody with regarded limited ability can comprehend. While more youthful people may not deliberately purchase from older adults, they may utilize elderspeak unconsciously based upon their idea of the elderly's capability (or lack thereof) to understand as well as react.
Tumblr media
These methods in fact decrease comprehension. Naturally, older individuals in complete property of their faculties are miserable when addressed as youngsters. Elderspeak's adverse impacts can include: Anxiety, Animosity, Low self-confidence, Embarrassment, and Loneliness. Elderspeak might lead older adults to nurture increased rage and decline to work together with assisted care. A child talk speech pattern can be an assault on their dignity as well as self-respect.
Elderspeak-- Is it handy or simply baby talk? Like an automated change right into low equipment, we frequently go back to baby talk when connecting with seniors-- regardless of the person's capacity to comprehend as well as react. This is called "Elderspeak." It is usual, especially between young caretakers as well as older citizens in an assisted living facility.
How To Discourage Caregivers From Using 'Elderspeak'
Yet, the depressing point is, young speakers have it half right. Some aspects of elderspeak do make up for all-natural adjustments in the cognitive abilities of our elders. But the majority of the moment, it is actually confusing as well as even unsafe to chat this means. Elderspeak is a type of ageism that is under analysis by scientists as well as solution carriers alike.
Simplifying the length as well as intricacy of sentences. Speaking much more slowly. Making use of minimal vocabulary. Repeating or paraphrasing what has actually simply been claimed. Utilizing terms like "honey" or "dear." Utilizing declarations that appear like inquiries. This cultural behavior is additionally called "child talk" because it is so similar to the means we talk to very young kids.
Just how usual is it? Elderspeak prevails in taking care of homes, medical facilities and other setups where frail senior citizens are discovered. It seems a speech pattern based on stereotypes not actual habits because we additionally hear it used in scenarios where older grownups are clearly working well-- such as financial institutions and also grocery store shops.
Susan Kemper, a prominent teacher at the College of Kansas focusing on gerontology, guided a Merrill conference on communication, aging as well as memory. Her study checks out why young adults make use of elderspeak and also exactly how older grownups react to it. With give financing from the National Institute on Aging, she has tested the opportunity that people might change their speech patterns in response to signs that an older person doesn't understand.
youtube
Elderspeak: What It Is And Why It Can Be Harmful
The elders paid attention to the young individuals as well as did not interrupt with requests to talk extra slowly, repeat or clear up. Although the older listeners offered no sign of difficulty, the examinations documented that young speakers consistently reverted to elderspeak. Older adults do not take part in elderspeak with each various other, perhaps since they have actually learned it shares a mixed message regarding the listener's capabilities.
Is it harmful? Elderspeak suggests that an older individual is not proficient. Miscommunication is taking place and also it is his/her fault. This is the mindset that Kemper discloses through her experiments. She has actually documented the unusual discrepancy between a flawless efficiency by elders and also their records of complication. Over and also over again, older adults effectively find the location on a map as advised, but at the exact same time, they report issues that they misinterpreted their younger partners in the examination.
It may enhance unfavorable stereotypes regarding aging as well as deteriorate older adults' self-confidence. Most aspects of elderspeak really decrease understanding. It is confusing when a word is exaggerated. It is likewise difficult to comprehend a declaration that appears like an inquiry. Talking also gradually impacts an elderly's ability to concentrate on the bottom line as well as retain information.
What is helpful? Today we know a good deal about regular adjustments in thinking as well as interacting as an individual ages. Science has established that older adults experience modifications in their functioning memory. This affects the way they hear and also comprehend what is stated to them. Because of this, we know that senior citizens will certainly have better understanding if you: Repeat and paraphrase what you are claiming.
Be Mindful Of 'Elderspeak' When Talking To An 'Older' Adult'
As an example, as opposed to claiming:"The lunch, which was served late the other day, made my tummy trouble and I needed to miss out on the class that I appreciate so a lot." Try claiming it in this manner: "Lunch was offered late yesterday. My stomach was upset so I needed to miss my class. I truly enjoy that course." These 2 sort of lodgings are really various from the singsong kind of elderspeak we hear most frequently in assisted living facility.
Making use of a rich and varied vocabulary makes any type of conversation more intriguing, as well as adults are able to discover new words throughout their whole lifetime. Stay clear of making use of "honey" or "dearie"-- this keeps the conversation respectful. People with hearing loss do require amplification, but it is best to stay clear of increasing the pitch or tone of your voice because this misshapes the words.
Repeat the bottom line or claim it again one more way-- do not simply think that the older individual will not obtain it. The guideline of thumb when communicating with seniors is-- one size does not fit all. Our elders have a selection of abilities. To keep them in the interaction loophole needs a few modifications, however it's no more uncertainty to recognize what aids and what doesn't.

From  his comments I think both parties (Yes, GOP more so!) got us where we are today.  Wolff said the US capitalist success story from around 1800 to the 1970s ended for 3 reasons:1. Globalization -  Corporations exporting jobs because US wages had gone up, so businesses decided to move  production to low wage countries2. Automation - Enormous growth of automation and computerization3. Immigration -  Increase in immigrants (illegal and legal with US immigration law changing in 1965) who were willing to work for cheaper wages Results --  jobs disappeared, wages stopped rising. Next 50 years, 1970-2020, has been a time when workers have been more productive,  but real wages remained close to what they had been in the 1970s.
The idea, and a big part of the "American Dream," rising wages and a rising standard of living has slipped away over the decades.   Americans are reeling from this huge departure from their expectations. More families need two paychecks.  Buying on credit and going into debt is commonplace.  Americans: working harder, borrowing more , and then the Great Recession in 2008.  We have to stop blaming a certain person or party. It's the unchecked quest for profit that drives much of what happens”
