Homework #2: Make a fiber “painting”!
For your next homework project, I want you to consider another way your dyed fabrics can be presented, specifically, as “paintings” stretched around wood supports like canvas is before the paint is applied.
Your dyed fabrics will have a very different sensation living in the world as paintings than they do living in the world as banners/flags or quilts and I want you to better understand the variety of methods of presentation you have at your disposal so that you can choose the one that best suits your ideas.
For this homework assignment we will all explore the idea of making a fiber painting.
I have distributed wood stretcher bars for a work that measures 12" x 16" for your paintings and will demo the stretching process during class time during week 12.
Your fiber painting could be constructed from fabric scraps patched together, or your could dye a new piece of fabric specifically for this project. This project could also incorporate other materials besides dye, such as beading and embroidery or acrylic paint. If you plan to do any beading or embroidery, I would suggest you do this before you stretch your fabric around the wood supports. Any painting you might want to try doing over your dyed fabric could be done after the fabric has been stretched. Please feel free to ask any questions if you are unsure of what the best order to do for your project processes.
Plan to have your completed fabric painting stretched and ready to be critiqued at the start of classtime on Thursday, November 16th.
Images above, from top:
work by artist Liz Collins, on view this past summer in Los Angeles at Luis De Jesus in her solo show “Staring at the Sun”. You can ready more about the show linked here.
The process to stretch your fabric painting starts with having the size of wood supports you need. If you want to make a bigger painting than 16" x 12", this is okay with me, but you will need to purchase your own wood supports for this. (You can buy them in all different sizes at MC Art!)
The next two images show other aspects of the fabric stretching process. We will go over this process together next week during class….

Hi everyone!
My name is Athena Lindbeck. I am a Junior and my major is Arts Management. This means I study both art and business. I am hoping to either go into advertising and marketing, or a creative director job.
Above is my contemporary artist meme. I think my church always hears “artist” and thinks I am a painter specifically. My mom always is so impressed with my art and often assumes I am some talented painter that can whip out a mural for her house.. (I cannot LOL). I more see myself as someone who prefers graphic art, or using art as a way of professional means. Society often hears I am studying art and immediately I am thrown into a lecture about how art is not going to get me anywhere, that I will be poor and should change my degree and be a doctor. What I really do is actually not one specific thing. I do almost about everything. I paint, experiment with mixed media and combining different mediums, I enjoy photography, cinema, graphic design, and drawing. I wouldn’t say I am extremely talented in one of these specifically, but rather I create art using all these mediums depending on the feeling or emotion I am trying to provoke, and sometimes one medium carries this message over better than another.
I am super excited for this class. I love the idea or integrating faith into art, and I can't wait to experiment with this idea, and create artwork that reflects the ideas learned through this course.

Color Psychology
Colors can affect us emotionally and can be used to express these emotions and to evoke them. Red, orange, and yellow are warm colors that are considered to increase your heart rate, increase temperature, and give you adrenaline. Blue and green are cool colors that are considered to decrease your heart rate, decrease temperature, and relax your body. These colors are known to affect your behavior in a certain environment or setting. For example in a blue/green colored locker room, it can give off a sense of relaxation and calm someone down to make them feel peace while a red locker room would give off a sense of competition and anger. Color psychology is all about how people react to a certain color and how they express that emotion.
George Chaplin said that “Color is both the subject and object of my painting, and I celebrate it for its emotional and spiritual impact...I feel my way of working is directly aligned with the process of change in nature.”This concept was a remark or comment on his work “Turner” which he explains as painting space, atmosphere-not an image. Chaplin evokes conditions in nature of place rather than reference to place, “In atmosphere, there are no edges.” Chaplin also notes that, “Line can appeal to the emotion, just as color can appeal to the intellect: the edge gives itself away.” This is where Chaplin says his painting “Turner” came in to give a better explanation.

Homework #2- Color Psychology
1.) The text found in “Color” basically states that there are different ways we experience color. Color can be experienced as “warm” or “cool.” Generally, warm colors are in the red/orange/yellow family and cool colors are in the blue/green/purple family, but the way we perceive color is all relative. Saturation level can cause a color to appear warmer or cooler, as well as how a color is placed in relation to other hues. Color can cause physiological and psychological responses, and color symbolism has been used throughout history to create mental connotations to different themes. The text also talks about local and expressive color. Local color is closer to reality, but expressive color is used to convey a mood or sensation.
2.) One thing I found interesting in the reading was the idea of flowers being used as a color-coded language in Victorian times. Floriography, or “the language of flowers” is a form of communication that has been used since the beginning of time, even in the Bible. Flower symbolism is used in Psalms to reference the nation of Israel, in Song of Solomon to symbolize romance, and in Isaiah to reveal Jesus’s coming to earth. After further research, I found that the color symbolism of flowers is extremely vast and every culture has their own interpretations and traditions. In western culture, though, modern florists usually use floriography when curating selections of roses. Red roses symbolize intensity, deep romance, and religious themes (such as the crucifixion of Christ). Pink roses symbolize romantic affection, white roses symbolize virtue and purity, and yellow roses symbolize friendship. Here is a vintage infographic with more information:

Homework 2: Zoom In, Zoom Out
For our next homework drawing, I want you to create a pair of drawings on the same subject, either an interior or exterior space. For one drawing, drawing your subject from a more zoomed out perspective and for the other drawing, draw your subject from a zoomed in, close up perspective.
I will pass out paper for this project in class this week. We will be using smaller paper for this pair of drawing so that it is more portable. This is still an observational drawing that you draw directly in the interior or exterior space you have chosen for your site. This should not be drawn from a photo.
Homework #2 is due on Monday, November 1, 2021.
This deadline is later than the date printed your syllabus to not complete with the art show.

Homework #2: Contemporary Sampler Sources & Project Idea Sketches
For your next homework assignment, I want you to commit to what specific 4 sources you will have for your Contemporary Sampler project with this post. List each source and articulate what about that source is interesting and important to your work right now (about 1 short paragraph each source). Choose an image to further articulate each source to also include in your post.
In addition to these 4 sources, also take this opportunity to indicate your current ideas for the project so far. I would like to see 2 different idea sketches of what you plan to make for this project as part of this post.
Your homework is due posted to your blogs.
While this post will be graded as part of your second blog check grade, you will need this posted onto your blog by next week for your next small group meeting where you will discuss your project ideas with your peers.

an installation view of current solo exhibition by New York based artist Zoe Buckman called “Let Her Rave” at Gavlak Los Angeles.
From the press release:
“Zoë Buckman is a multi-disciplinary artist best known for her politically charged sculptures, installations and photographs. Rooted in activism against social constructs that historically and presently oppress women, her works straddle a delicate balance between notions of: masculine and feminine, industrial and handmade, craft and “high” art, personal and collective, explosive and restrained. The artist thoughtfully develops this balance in order to make her work accessible to both men and women and promote a dialogue about the underlying issues of gender equality.”
