This story originally appeared on Grist and is part of the Climate Desk collaboration.
On a 20-acre parcel outside the tiny Southern California town of New Cuyama, a 1.5-megawatt solar farm uses the sun’s rays to slowly charge nearly 600 batteries in nearby cabinets. At night, when energy demand rises, that electricity is sent to the grid to power homes with clean energy.
To make renewable energy from intermittent sources like solar and wind available when it is most needed, it’s becoming more common to use batteries to store the power as it’s generated and transmit it later. But one thing about the Cuyama facility, which began operations this month, is less common: The batteries sending energy to the grid once powered electric vehicles.
The SEPV Cuyama facility, located about two hours northeast of Santa Barbara, is the second hybrid storage facility opened by B2U Storage Solutions. Its first facility, just outside Los Angeles, uses 1,300 retired batteries from Honda Clarity and Nissan Leaf EVs to store 28 megawatt-hours of power, enough to power about 9,500 homes.
The facilities are meant to prove the feasibility of giving EV batteries a second life as stationary storage before they are recycled. Doing so could increase the sustainability of the technology’s supply chain and reduce the need to mine critical minerals, while providing a cheaper way of building out grid-scale storage.
“This is what’s needed at massive scale,” said Freeman Hall, CEO of the Los Angeles-based large-scale storage system company.
Electric vehicle batteries are typically replaced when they reach 70 to 80 percent of their capacity, largely because the range they provide at that point begins to dwindle. Almost all of the critical materials inside them, including lithium, nickel, and cobalt, are reusable. A growing domestic recycling industry, supported by billions of dollars in loans from the Energy Department and incentives in the Inflation Reduction Act, is being built to prepare for what will one day be tens of millions of retired EV battery packs.
Before they are disassembled, however, studies show that around three-quarters of decommissioned packs are suitable for a second life as stationary storage. (Some packs may not have enough life left in them, are too damaged from a collision, or are otherwise faulty.)
“We were seeing the first generation of EVs end their time on the road, and 70 percent or more of those batteries have very strong residual value,” said Hall. “That should be utilized before all those batteries are recycled, and we’re just deferring recycling by three, four, or five years.”
Extending the useful life of EV batteries mitigates the impact of manufacturing them, said Maria Chavez, energy analyst at the Union of Concerned Scientists.
“The whole point of trying to deploy electric vehicles is to reduce emissions and reduce the negative impacts of things like manufacturing and extractive processes on our environment and our communities,” Chavez told Grist. “By extending the life of a battery, we reduce the need for further exploitation of our natural resources, we reduce the demand for raw materials, and we generally encourage a more sustainable process.”
Just as batteries have become crucial to reducing emissions from transportation, they’re also needed to fully realize the benefits of clean energy. Without stationary storage, wind and solar power can only feed the grid when the wind is blowing or the sun is shining.
“Being able to store it and use it when it’s most needed is a really important way to meet our energy needs,” Chavez said.
The use of utility-scale battery storage is expected to skyrocket, from 1.5 gigawatts of capacity in 2020 to 30 gigawatts by 2025. EV packs could provide a stockpile for that buildout. Hall said there are already at least 3 gigawatt-hours of decommissioned EV packs sitting around in the United States that could be deployed, and that the volume of them being removed from cars is doubling every two years.
“We’re going from a trickle when we started four years ago to a flood of batteries that are coming,” he said.
B2U says its technology allows batteries to be repurposed in a nearly “plug-and-play fashion.” They do not need to be disassembled, and units from multiple manufacturers—B2U has tested batteries from Honda, Nissan, Tesla, GM, and Ford—can be used in one system.
The packs are stored in large cabinets and managed with proprietary software, which monitors their safety and discharges and charges each battery based on its capacity. The batteries charge during the day from both the solar panels and the grid. Then B2U sells that power to utilities at night, when demand and prices are much higher.
Hall said using second-life batteries earns the same financial return as new grid-scale batteries at half the initial cost, and that for now, repurposing the packs is more lucrative for automakers than sending them straight to recyclers. Until the recycling industry grows, it’s still quite expensive to recycle them. By selling or leasing retired packs to a grid storage company, said Hall, manufacturers can squeeze more value out of them.
That could even help drive down the cost of electric vehicles, he added. “The actual cost of leasing a battery on wheels should go down if the full value of the battery is enhanced and reused,” he said. “Everybody wins when we do reuse in a smart fashion.”
B2U expects to add storage to a third solar facility near Palmdale next year. The facilities are meant to prove that the idea works, after which B2U plans to sell its hardware and software to other storage-project developers.
At the moment, though, planned deployment of the technology is limited. B2U predicts only about 6 percent of decommissioned EV batteries in the US will be used for grid-scale storage by 2027.
“People are skeptical, and they should be, because it’s hard to do reuse of batteries,” said Hall. “But we’ve got a robust data set that does prove reliability, performance, and profitability. We’re at a point where we really can scale this.”

2021 Honda Accord Hybrid is an efficient sedan without compromise
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/2021-honda-accord-hybrid-is-an-efficient-sedan-without-compromise-2/
2021 Honda Accord Hybrid is an efficient sedan without compromise
This fuel-sipping Honda hybrid’s front end was slightly tweaked for 2021.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
The Honda Accord is like a blue-chip stock: always a smart buy. For 2021, the hybrid variant makes a strong case that it’s the best all-around model in the Accord range, building on the nameplate’s fundamental excellence by offering far greater fuel economy.
Like
Good low-speed acceleration
Excellent driver aids
Quality trimmings
Roomy interior
Don’t Like
Annoying regenerative braking paddles
Real-world efficiency can disappoint
Meh infotainment system
To keep the Accord at the top of its game, this venerable Honda was mildly tweaked for 2021. Its grille is wider, and the Honda Sensing system’s front-mounted radar sensor is slightly less prominent. Improved headlamps have greater reach and a wider beam pattern for enhanced visibility at night.
As for the hybrid, not much sets it apart from other Accords, at least visually. A blue-accented Honda badge on the grille hints that something a little different lurks under the hood. There are hybrid badges on the front fenders and trunk, and really, that’s about it. Separating it from more plebeian variants, the top-shelf hybrid Touring model rolls on stylish 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Goodyear all-season tires. Despite a tread pattern that looks optimized for fair-weather use, these rubbers handle ice and snowy slop with ease, though a set of winter tires would certainly increase driving confidence.
2021 Honda Accord Hybrid: Miserly motoring without the misery
See all photos
The Accord’s interior is as nice as it’s ever been. The 10th-generation Accord has aged extremely well, basically because Honda did such a phenomenal job from the get-go. Aside from the unconvincing simulated wood accents, the textures are rich, its leather is of good quality and all the switches and knobs feel premium. Ergonomics deserve praise, too, as nearly every control is within easy reach and is clearly labeled.
The 2021 Honda Accord Hybrid’s front bucket seats are soft and supportive, plus its rear bench offers miles of legroom. Taller folks will pine for a skosh more noggin space, however. You do sit somewhat low in the Accord, not that your butt is on the floor, the car is just very close to the pavement, which can make getting in and out a challenge, especially for older folks.
Spacious, comfortable and beautifully assembled of high-quality materials, the Accord’s cabin is tough to top, especially in the midsize-sedan segment.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
As for amenities, hybrid models come standard with remote start and a multi-angle rearview camera. Push-button ignition and heated side-view mirrors are included at no extra charge as well, while full LED headlights are standard on the EX grade and higher.
One nice upgrade for 2021 is the infotainment display. An 8-inch touchscreen is now standard across the board, complete with Apple CarPlay (which can connect wirelessly on EX Hybrid models and above) as well as Android Auto. Abstain from using either of these smartphone-mirroring systems and you’ll have to contend with the Accord’s embedded infotainment system, which looks pretty dated with its busy interface. Aside from those goodies, the Accord also gains a rear-seat reminder feature to help prevent drivers from forgetting small children, pets or other precious cargo in the back. Low Speed Braking Control is a new feature, too. Standard on Touring models, it’s designed to mitigate or even prevent collisions at lower speeds, such as while parking.
The hybrid powertrain’s small lithium-ion battery pack is mounted underneath the backseat where it eats up no interior space. This means the Accord has the same generous 16.7 cubic feet of trunk volume you get in non-hybrid models, a figure that compares very favorably to the 2021 Toyota Camry Hybrid, which offers 15.1 cubes’ worth of room and the 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, which serves up 16.
This car’s powertrain works well, providing plenty of zip without drawing attention to itself.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
Bringing this comfortable and capacious family hauler to life is a two-motor hybrid system. Doing most of the work is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, one that’s backed up by a propulsion motor in addition to a separate motor that handles starting and generating duties. Total system horsepower measures 212, while peak torque clocks in at 232 pound-feet just off idle, figures that put this hybrid between the base Accord with its 1.5-liter engine and the top-shelf version with the 2.0-liter turbo. The hybrid’s output figures won’t set the world on fire, but in everyday driving they’re more than up to the task. Curiously, this hybrid system doesn’t have a transmission since, in normal driving, the engine powers a generator, which then runs the propulsion motor. An EV mode allows the car to operate solely on battery power, but at higher speeds, the engine directly drives the wheels through a lockup clutch. Voilà, no transmission required.
This Accord’s performance is quite strong; it’s peppier than you might think for something wearing hybrid placards, which is usually shorthand for driving doldrums. Thanks to electric torque, this big sedan scoots around town, pulling with authority when taking off from stoplights and responding nicely when you give it the spurs. Yes, the acceleration does taper off noticeably after about 60 mph where the powertrain gets a bit winded, but it still delivers more than adequate performance. For 2021, small tweaks make the drivetrain more direct and immediate, with the engine better responding to throttle inputs. In fact, aside from a touch of droning at higher speeds when working hard and a bit of that rubber-band effect often associated with continuously variable transmissions, the Accord Hybrid’s powertrain feels totally normal.
These wheels are unique to the Touring model.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
Touring models, which sit at the pinnacle of the Accord Hybrid range, sticker at 44 miles per gallon city, 41 mpg highway and 43 mpg combined, impressive figures to be certain. Unfortunately, in real-world driving, I’ve only managed to coax about 34.8 out of this example, which is stellar for a large sedan, but still pretty disappointing considering it’s off the mark by more than 8 mpg. I suspect the car would do better in warmer weather, since it’s been pretty cold during my week with it. Lower-end versions of the Accord Hybrid are even more economical than the Touring model, stickering at 48 mpg across the board, which is comparable to the most-efficient versions of the 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and 2021 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE, both of which return 52 mpg combined.
Mounted to the steering wheel are two paddles, but they’re not for shifting. Instead, they allow you to fine-tune the amount of regenerative braking that happens when you lift your foot off the accelerator, which is a great thing to have — in theory. I like maximum regenerative braking for a one-pedal driving experience, however, whenever you roll to a stop, the system resets. It doesn’t hold the regenerative-braking level you’ve selected and that’s annoying. Another misstep, the paddles seem to be labeled backwards. Clicking on the minus one increases the amount of deceleration while the one labeled plus decreases it. I’m not very good at math, but I’m pretty sure that’s backwards.
The Accord Hybrid’s ride is quite firm, but well controlled. This car’s interior remains hushed at speed, and the chunky steering wheel rim feels great in my hands. This sedan’s weighty-yet-quick steering makes the Accord feel far more agile than you might expect for a car of this size.
The 2021 Honda Accord Hybrid is one of the best family sedans you can buy today.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
Honda Sensing is as good as it’s ever been. This suite of advanced driver aids is one of the best in the business: attentive, smooth and very easy to use. The lane-centering system is phenomenal, helping the Accord track as straight as a San Francisco cable car. The adaptive cruise control works effortlessly, collision mitigation braking is waiting in the wings should you make a critical error and traffic-sign recognition is always there to remind you of how much you’re speeding.  EX and higher models also come with blind-spot monitoring, while parking sensors are fitted to EX-L and Touring variants, the latter of which also gains rain-sensing windshield wipers.
Owning a Honda Accord Hybrid is a great way to save money at the pump, but it’s economical in another way, too. The base price is an eminently reasonable $27,565, including $995 in delivery fees. That makes it about $700 less than an entry-level Camry Hybrid and nearly $1,200 more affordable than a comparable Sonata. Even the Touring model I’m reviewing here with all its bells and whistles checks out for $37,590.
With its spacious interior, upscale trimmings, generous equipment and good performance, the 2021 Honda Accord Hybrid is an excellent family sedan. But its smooth-running, fuel-sipping drivetrain is what really makes this model the pick of the Accord litter.

Sergio
Yesterday, after I dropped off my baby at the San Bernardino Police station, I took off as soon as I could. I decided to drive down to Pomona to visit my family's home to see if my sister was able to give me some money. She offered to give me $5k to help buy my cousin's dad's Prius. Of course she wants to look at the condition and the mileage of the car as if I dunno how to look at the car myself. considering she's financially offered to help buy it for me, she wants to be in control in looking at the condition of the car, just like my dad would have. The only thing that sucks about hybrid cars is that their battery pack doesn't last forever. If the vehicle is out of warranty, it would cost $5k to replace. If the battery isn't in it's best shape, then I have no choice, but to look for another vehicle from a used lot or Carmax. With my credit check which still sucks because of my debt, it may be harder for me to get lower monthly payments unless I get lucky. My sister mentioned that she owes money to my brother and had to pay him back. She has to sell a few stocks in a couple of weeks in order to make some more money, by then that's when she said she can hand me the money for a car. I didn't know that, so I stuck around the area, went to Tommy's Burgers off of Central Ave., ate my lunch while I was playing Pokemon Go to collect items and collect more Pokemon. It's the only distraction I have that I enjoy doing to keep my mind off of what my ex is putting me through. I honestly should just try to forget about it for right now, but knowing that I still have to see him again in court really pisses me the hell off. The only thing I am thankful for is that at least he can still help watch the child while I'm working. I would only have to have my friend help me watch him 2 nights of the whole week since I have the baby the whole weekend. I would still feel better knowing that I don't have to be by myself when I see Ricky. That's part of the reason why I hired an attorney for court so that I don't have to fight him alone. My trauma and anxiety was really bad when I was able to reclaim my apartment and baby 3 weeks ago.
After I got back home, I decided to try to fasten the base of the baby seat to my backseat, at least mess with it to try to get familiar with knowing how to do it. At first I thought I had it facing the wrong way, but I think i got it down after watching a couple of YouTube videos on how to do it. The only thing I did wrong was fastening the hooks facing up, instead of facing them down which I didn't really know. This is the first child I have in my life, I didn't expect to be in this position as a single mom, just like how common it is now nowadays. This was a position I been trying to avoid all my life. What's done is done, anyways back to the baby seat deal. While I was trying to mess with it getting it fastened, this white boy that kinda looked like he had a gang life started talking to me and walked up to me asking me about my Honda. I kept my answers short because I kinda wasn't in the mood to talk to him or anyone considering I normally don't socialize with people that seem like trouble makers or are ghetto. He was the one driving a green pick up truck that was parked in the middle of the drive way and he was close to my parking spot and was in my way so I couldn't really park properly until he decided to park in somebody else's private spot. I noticed the public parking spot in front of my apartment was still available since I left, so I decided to just park back in there. Right when I started messing with the baby seat base, that's when the dude started asking me a bunch of questions about my car. He was supposely there waiting trying to get a hold of a friend that he last spoke to 2 weeks ago. I was a little annoyed, but I didn't let it bother me too much as I didn't wanna seem rude to the guy. He said his name was Sergio, he ended up giving me his phone number. I could've just thrown the phone number away in the trash can, but I decided to keep his contact since he supposely has 'connections'. It sounds like this dude has a bad record because of his past, and he has gone to jail more than once.
I made a choice to message him last night, but it turns out I think i made a mistake doing so. I asked him if he ever got back in touch with the friend he was trying to find, then he told me he doesn't remember who I am. I thought maybe the dude is on drugs, so I was gonna stop msging him, but then I tripped his memory telling him he asked me about my Honda. He ends up telling me that somebody called the cops on him, and that he left his truck at the apartment or something like that. He said he needed somebody with a license to pick up his truck or something for him because he didn't want to lose it or his tattoo equipment in it. It was like 1 or 2am in the morning when I was awake after my nap. I barely knew this dude and I hardly know him, so of course I didn't trust him when he asked me to hang out or go meet up with him. I decided to ignore him for the remainder of the evening & morning. I normally don't mess around with people like this, I already got my own problems and I don't need his company just because I'm lonely or vulnerable. He messaged me again after I woke up about 7am this morning saying sorry that he didn't respond. lol I was the one who didn't respond because I went back to sleep. His problems are his own and I'm not gonna worry about somebody else right now when I got myself to worry about.

Test drive: The 2021 Toyota Sienna hybrid minivan was long overdue
Test drive: 2021 Toyota Sienna
The 2021 Toyota Sienna is the first hybrid version of the minivan, but much more than that according to Fox News Autos Editor Gary Gastelu
The 2021 Toyota Sienna was destined to be.
It’s the first hybrid-powered minivan from the maker of the Prius and the tech is the perfect match for the brand’s ultimate people carrier, providing just enough power and great fuel economy for a family-friendly vehicle.
Tumblr media
Aside from the CH-R subcompact, every four-door Toyota passenger car and crossover is now available with a hybrid powertrain.
The Sienna’s is shared with Toyota’s Highlander Hybrid and comprised of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with two electric motors that put out a combined 245 horsepower in this guise. It’s the only one being offered in the Sienna from now on, but is available with a choice of all-wheel-drive or front-wheel-drive.
Tumblr media
The EPA says they’ll get 35 and 36 mpg combined, respectively, which is a better than 70% increase over the old Sienna’s 296 horsepower V6, which was rated at 20 and 21 mpg. Those are pretty outstanding numbers. Even the plug-in hybrid Chrysler Pacifica is only good for 30 mpg after its 32 miles of all-electric range has been used up.
The new Sienna can also tow up to 3,500 pounds, but it’s the stuff it hauls around inside of it that’s most impressive.
Tumblr media
Starting prices range from $35,635 to $51,653 and all models come standard with Toyota’s Safety Sense suite of electronic driver aids, including automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, but the higher end versions add so much comfort and tech, you’ll think you’ve never left the house.

Tumblr media
There’s a ceiling-mounted widescreen entertainment system with HDMI inputs for media players and consoles, a 12-speaker,;1,200-watt JBL auto system; reclining second-row captain’s chairs with leg rests; and a refrigerator/freezer built into the center console, which also houses a vacuum that has a hose long enough to reach the entire vehicle. I spent a cold winter’s night parked outside my son’s soccer practice in it fully reclined watching streaming video and wouldn’t have been happier at home. The battery pack even provided enough power that the engine didn’t need to run the entire time to keep me warm.
Tumblr media
The Sienna is smooth and quiet on the move, with ride and handling characteristics that defy its size and station in life, but aren’t quite so sporty as its Supra-inspired flared-fender exterior design suggest, but about as good as you can expect from a mini mobile home. While you’re on the move, a rearview mirror with video feed helps you see past all the heads and stuff behind you, while a pretty low-resolution 360-degree camera system provides a bird’s-eye-view for parking.
Tumblr media
FOX NEWS AUTOS TEST: 2020 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER HYBRID
The minivan landscape is pretty bare these days, with just the Honda Odyssey, Chrysler Pacifica/Voyager and Kia Sedona for the Sienna to compete with, but each has a very different character and the Toyota may be the most complete package of the bunch.

2021 Toyota Sienna
Base price: $35,635
As tested: $52,450
Type: 7-passenger, 4-door all-wheel-drive minivan

Electric Vehicle Batteries Market Global Growth Analysis and Forecast to 2020
There is a growing interest in the research and production of batteries used in electric and hybrid vehicles, owing to the high demand for fossil fuels on the global markets, along with the deterioration of environmental concerns induced by the high rate of internal combustion engine vehicles. One of the major determinants of climate change is the transport industry, with 23% of greenhouse emissions originating from this sector, second only to the industrial sector. That is why the "Paris Declaration on ElectroMobility and Climate Change and Call to Action" was adopted in 2015. The primary purpose of this policy is to minimize global warming by more than 2 degrees. This target would be reached if 35% of the overall number of cars sold by 2030 are electric vehicles.
Electric Vehicle batteries are very distinct from those used in consumer electronic devices such as smartphones and laptops or computers. Within a small space and weight and at a reasonable price, they are required to handle high power and high energy capability. The innovative battery technologies that are optimal for Electric cars all over the globe have earned substantial development efforts and funding. The United States government, through the Department of Energy (DOE), has been closely promoting its Research and development efforts in advanced batteries. Grants of approximately 2 billion to speed up the production and development of the next generation of United States batteries and EVs have been passed. Also, the European Commission and governmental organizations in Europe and the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry have consistently supported advanced battery R&D activities. BYD, Lishen, and Chunlan have acquired positive subsidy assistance from the Chinese government for its research and manufacturing of advanced batteries and electric vehicles.
Lithium-ion batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, and Lead-Acid batteries are the major main battery systems used in Electric cars. Previously, owing to their proven technology, easy availability and low cost, most electric cars used lead-acid batteries, with the particularly notable exception of some early BEVs, such as the Detroit Electric, that used a nickel-iron battery. Lead-acid batteries wind up being a large (25-50%) major component of the final weight of the Electrical vehicles. Nickel-metal hydride batteries have particular energy of 30-80 Wh/kg, far better than lead-acid, although less efficient by 60-70% in charging and discharging. , Nickel-metal hydride batteries can have an exceedingly long lifespan if used adequately, as has already been proved in their use in hybrid cars. Although, poor efficiency, high self-discharge, very delicate charge cycles, and poor cold-weather performance are downsides of Nickel-metal hydride batteries.
Batteries with lithium-ion (Li-ion) have a higher efficiency than typical rechargeable batteries with lead-acid or nickel-cadmium. This means that manufacturers of batteries can save room, limiting the battery pack's overall size. The lightest of all metals is lithium, too. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, however, do not contain any lithium metal; they contain ions. An ion is an electrically charged atom or molecule caused by the loss or gain of one or more electrons. Lithium-ion batteries are often safer than certain options, as battery makers guarantee that in the unfortunate event of a battery breakdown, protective precautions are in place to protect customers. Manufacturers, for example, equip electric cars with charging protections to secure the batteries over a limited span of time during repeated fast charging sessions.
Although the emission-reducing features of electric vehicles are widely known, batteries using metals such as cobalt, are still controversial. SVOLT, headquartered in Changzhou, China, has announced the launch of cobalt-free batteries developed for the Electric Vehicle Industry. In addition to reducing rare earth metals, the company claims that they have higher efficiency, which could lead to electric vehicles with ranges of up to 800 km (500 miles), while also extending the battery life span and increasing safety. As reported on November 17, 2020, SVOLT Energy Technology plans to construct its first European lithium-ion cell Gigafactory in Saarlouis, Germany. The proposal foresees a USD 2.4 billion investment in 24 GWh annual production capability, which would be adequate for 300,000-500,000 electric vehicles. Production is expected to commence within three years, at the end of 2023.
Presently, the Electric Vehicle Battery industry is the market is driven by organizations from only three nations, all of them in Asia: China, Japan, and Korea. In 2018, less than 3% of the total global demand for Electric Vehicle batteries was provided by organizations outside these three nations, and only approximately 1% was delivered by European organizations. Of the 70 giga-factories announced worldwide, 46 are premised in China. Europe does not have a credible industrial strategy to target large-scale manufacturing of batteries, unlike China. In September 2019, Netherlands-based Lithium Werks, which already has two plants in China, announced plans for another. The company says it chooses to establish plants in China because the infrastructure is better, and the permits required to build a manufacturing plant are easier to obtain.
The estimated demand for batteries from Electric Vehicles manufactured in Europe is more than five times the number of projects currently reported in Europe, including Northvolt in Sweden, LG Chem in Wroclaw, Samsung SDI in God, and CATL in Erfurt, for example. Either battery imports or new battery production capacity in Europe would have to fill this void. As announced on November 17, 2020, CATL, a battery manufacturer from China, has plan to spend USD 5.1 billion to build a production facility for electric vehicle batteries in Indonesia, the country's top investment. CATL scheduled USD 6.8 billion in sales worldwide making it one of the nation's biggest electric vehicle battery manufacturers. The firm supplies carmakers including Hyundai, Honda, BMW, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo with batteries. The investment shows that the ambition of Indonesia to become a major player in the global supply of green energy is gaining traction.

Future Cars: The Hottest Non-SUVs Going on Sale in the Next Year
They’re losing market share to trucks and SUVs, but traditional passenger cars are far from dead. Although some automakers (ahem, Detroit) aren’t even trying to sell sedans and coupes anymore, all the car companies remaining are working twice as hard to make their offerings sleeker, more compelling alternatives to the taller, truckier versions of the same underlying vehicles. Whether it’s sexier styling, more power, or more batteries, there’s a car for anyone not taken by the SUV craze.
Ferrari Roma
What’s New: Roma is the first car to come off an all-new modular vehicle architecture that will eventually underpin next-gen versions of the Portofino and GTC4Lusso, as well as the long-awaited Ferrari Purosange SUV. Critically, this architecture has been designed from the outset to accommodate a plug-in hybrid powertrain, though the Roma will launch only with internal combustion engine power. The 3.9-liter twin-turbo V-8 under the Roma’s hood makes 612 hp and 593 lb-ft, enough to scoot it from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.2 seconds, and drives the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Ferrari claims the best weight-to-power ratio in the class. The Roma will feature the latest version of the company’s excellent Side Slip Control, with a drift mode that uses brake pressure to adjust the yaw angles.
What’s Not: The engine is an upgraded version of the V-8 used in the Portofino and GTC4Lusso T, and the transmission comes from the SF90.
When: 2020
How Much: $230,000 (est)
Honda Civic
What’s New: Everything. If you take a look at previous life cycles, the Honda Civic has been replaced roughly every five years—and if the New York auto show had happened in April as scheduled, we would have pictures by now. We expect the 11th generation to be completely redesigned for the 2021 model year, with new styling and technology and upgraded powertrains. Given the popularity of the coupe and hatchback, we think Honda will continue to offer those body styles, along with the popular four-door sedan. Expect to see the traditional trims first, followed by the performance-oriented Si and Type R in later year models.
What’s Not: It’s likely we’ll see at least one engine carried over from the current model and parts shared with other Honda products.
When: Late 2020
How much: $22,000 (est)
Hyundai Elantra
What’s New: The new Elantra continues Hyundai’s design revolution with its odd new mug, lots of triangular themes, and an all-new compact car platform underpinning it. In true Hyundai fashion, the 2021 Elantra is available with an overload of tech features, including two 10.3-inch displays, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and phone-as-key capability. For the first time, a hybrid model joins the lineup, and it brings fuel economy of more than 50 mpg. Expect an N-Line and full-fledged N model to follow the standard Elantra and the hybrid.
What’s Not: The base 2.0-liter I-4 and CVT carry over from the previous-generation Elantra.
When: Fall 2020
How Much: $19,000 (est)
Genesis G80
What’s New: Underpinned by a new Genesis-exclusive RWD platform shared with the GV80 SUV, the second-generation G80 returns with an assertive new look. Two new turbocharged engines, also shared with the GV80, offer 300 hp or more, powering the rear wheels (or all four). Step inside, and you’re greeted with a minimalist yet stylish design highlighted by the infotainment system’s massive 14.5-inch screen.
What’s Not: The standard eight-speed automatic transmission in the 2021 Genesis G80 is an updated version of the same unit found in the G70 and G90.
When: Summer 2020
How Much: $49,000 (est)
Mercedes-Benz E-Class
What’s New: It’s basically a refresh of the current E-Class, with a new grille and front bumper, a new hood with twin power domes, new LED rear lights and rear bumper, and the latest generation of the MBUX user interface. The 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 that powers today’s E 450 is gone, replaced by the 3.0-liter turbocharged mild hybrid inline-six that produces the same 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. And the plug-in hybrid E 350e sedan joins the lineup with a powertrain composed of the 2.0-liter turbo-four from the E 350 augmented by a 120-hp electric motor that contributes to a combined output of 315 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.
What’s Not: The entry-level 255-hp, 273-lb-ft 2.0-liter turbo-four is unchanged. This engine, which shares its architecture and 48-volt mild hybrid system with the new inline-six, arrives in the U.S. with refreshes of the C-Class sedan and GLC SUV.
When: 2020
How Much: $55,000 (est)
BMW 4 Series
What’s New: Yes, they’re really going with that grille. Make peace with it, because BMW isn’t backing down. Behind it, the 4 Series will be nearly identical mechanically to the 3 Series. For the U.S., this means turbocharged gasoline four- and six-cylinder inline engines with eight-speed automatic transmissions and rear- or all-wheel drive. The M4 is expected to use the new twin-turbo inline-six from the X3 M. The manual transmission is likely dead for this market.
What’s Not: Body styles are expected to remain the same: coupe, convertible, and four-door Gran Coupe hatchback.
When:  Late 2020
How Much: $45,000–$70,000 (est)
Acura TLX
What’s New: The second-generation Acura TLX is getting a makeover to match the brand’s emphasis on performance. Previewed by the sexy Type S concept in 2019, the new TLX showcases a new design direction with a longer nose and dash-to-axle ratio. The luxury sport sedan will also see the return of a Type S model, which will come with a new turbocharged V-6 and the latest version of SH-AWD.
What’s Not: Despite its more cab-rearward proportions, the Acura TLX will continue to ride on a front-drive-based platform.
When: 2021
How Much: $35,000 (est)
Jaguar XJ
What’s New: The very last Jaguar XJ sedan powered by an internal combustion engine rolled off the line in July 2019, ending 51 years of continuous production of the iconic nameplate. Replacing it is an all-new, all-electric Jaguar flagship that will be a more conventionally styled car than the company’s groundbreaking I-Pace, with a low-slung sedan profile, though it will have a large rear hatch instead of a conventional trunk. The new car won’t share its underpinnings with the I-Pace, either, but will be built on Jaguar’s new Modular Longitudinal Architecture, which is designed to accommodate mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains in addition to a BEV powertrain. Top-spec models are said to be equipped with a 100-kW-hr battery and four motors developing a total of 800 hp.
What’s Not: Everything else is new, but Jaguar’s flagship retains the XJ name.
When: 2021
How Much: $90,000 (est)
2021 Toyota Mirai
What’s New: Every beautiful inch of this car is thoroughly (and thoughtfully) reimagined and designed (a word that scarcely applied to its predecessor) to appeal to a vastly broader audience and command a higher price tag. Longer, lower, and wider (by about 3 inches each), it rides on new rear-drive architecture and 20-inch rolling stock. We’re promised unprecedented driving dynamics apropos of the Lexus-look four-door-coupe styling. Expect a quieter cabin, a 12.3-inch infotainment system, a 14-speaker JBL sound system, and comfortable seating for five. Slicker aerodynamics, improvements in efficiency of the next-gen fuel cell stack, and a larger hydrogen tank will extend the driving range of this bigger, faster, better-handling car to about 400 miles.
What’s Not: The name, which means “future” in Japanese.
When: Late 2020
How Much: $60,000 (est)

Review: Honda Jazz Hybrid
Cast you mind back to this time last year. If you went looking for a small Hybrid car, you would have one choice. And if you were looking for a Hybrid small SUV you would be lucky to have the choice of two. Well, the crafty engineers at Honda may have just built the ideal small car that fits both.
Introducing the all new Honda Jazz & Jazz Crosstar. Both of these are exclusively Hybrid and are seriously clever little cars – and ‘little’ may be the reason that they’re going to be so popular.
Looks: Firstly, lets tackle the obvious question; why are there now two Honda Jazz? Well, the new Honda Jazz comes in two styles: the Hatchback and the Crossover. The standard hatchback is reminiscent of the outgoing car, in that the profile continues with class-leading interior space, but the design has moved forward and looks exceptionally contemporary. If this modern uncluttered flair is Honda’s new style, then the Leslies Honda team are on board. It looks like Honda’s designers drove this right off the set of a RoboCop remake. Clearly inspired by the latest smartphone products, now we’re keen to see what will happen to the rest of the Honda range.
Then, Honda threw a curveball, and also launched the Jazz Crosstar. It’s no secret that Europe and the UK has fallen in love with SUV’s. Honda have taken an already upright and capacious model, and given it the crossover SUV pizazz. The Honda Jazz Crosstar is based purely on the top of the range ‘EX’ specification, but with a higher ride height, featuring SUV black body protection, silver roof rails, and a more rugged Crosstar front grille.
Meaning there is now a small hybrid hatchback and a small hybrid SUV available– both practically untouched markets, and one that is sure to pique the interest to a lot of people.
Interior: The interior of the new Honda Jazz Hybrid is just as modern as the exterior. All of the essentials are here, but hidden within the touchscreen display to maximise the effect of Honda’s minimalism design; a smooth simple dashboard, an easy to read Touchscreen Display & Digital Speedometer, finishing with a sleek-and-simple two spoke steering wheel.
Compared to the new Honda CRV Hybrid and the (soon to be released) all-electric Honda e, you can see where Honda’s designers have taken inspiration. However, the dashboard is significantly more simple – you won’t need a degree in Computer Science to get to grips with the new Honda’s controls.
In the ‘EX’ specification, expect to have your choice of Black or modern Grey semi-leather interior with matching dashboard finishes. While the Jazz Crosstar gets a unique Water-Resistant Cloth interior, for those adventurous weekends away.
Engine: The new Honda Jazz has even less engine options than before, which makes life simple: You’re getting a 1.5 Hybrid petrol, and that’s final.
The outgoing model used a 1.3 with manual or automatic gearbox, but the new Honda Jazz is Hybrid only. They’ve replaced the efficient 1300cc engine with a larger and more refined 1500cc petrol.
Honda’s hybrid systems are different then some others on the market. While others swap back-and-forth between engine and motor, Honda uses its engine to produce electricity for the motor rather than drive the wheels.
If you were to drive other hybrid hatchbacks, you would cruise on a flat road in practically silent serenity. But, find one of the Island’s steeper hills, and the engine cuts in and shatters the electric illusion. In the Honda, the engine is running at a constant speed keeping the battery topped up, powering the smooth electric motor, and producing a refined ride unfound in other small cars.
Pricing:
The previous Honda Jazz started at £14,500. The new Honda Jazz will start from £18,980. That sounds like a lot, just to go Hybrid – But there is more to it than that.
Honda no longer makes a basic ‘S’ specification. All Honda Jazz now feature MyHonda+ App Control, Virtual Assistant, Android Auto & Apple Carplay, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Touchscreen Display with a Reversing Camera. These are the features you’d expect to find on a high specification car. And on top of that, you’ll have an automatic gearbox and Hybrid power.
The Honda Jazz has traditionally had to compete with the Ford Fiesta and the Citroen C3. And at first glace, the price makes the Honda look expensive. But, as neither of these are hybrid, once you look at what it can do for your economy compared to its competition: Ford Fiesta (44 MPG) / Citroen C3 (48 MPG) / Honda Jazz Hybrid (63MPG).
That little bit extra upfront now looks like it’s worth it, right? Thanks to all the money you’ll be saving on petrol each month.
However, considering neither of these are even remotely electrified the only small hybrid worth mentioning as direct competition is the Toyota Yaris Hybrid (from £18,745). The Yaris was launched 8 years ago, and for similar money you could be sat in the brand-new Honda Jazz with the latest features and gadgetry.
The Honda Jazz Crosstar is a similar story. After one look at the abilities of Hybrid vs Petrol, it’s not worth your time reading about how the Crosstar is going to be significantly more economical than the Ford Fiesta Active or Citroen C3 Aircross.
In reality, the Jazz Crosstar’s real competition is Leslies Motors customer’s current favourites; the Hyundai Kona Hybrid (From £22,340), the Kia Niro Hybrid (from £24,885), and the Toyota C-HR Hybrid (from £25,625). Each of these are the standard specification, and simply won’t stack up against all the features of Honda’s top of the range new Jazz. And, if you’re looking for a small crossover, it’s only real competition is the Hyundai, the others are simply too long to be worth considering. For a compact hybrid SUV, with plenty of practically, there really is only one choice.
 Business User:
The Honda Jazz is going to be a great company car. Choosing a Self-Charging Hybrid is the easiest form of electrification. Simply fill up with petrol and drive. The battery recharges itself, and the automatic gearbox takes care of the rest.
Thanks to the Hybrid motor, economy is high and CO2 is low. Meaning company car tax (BIK) is going to be lower than a lot of the traditional hatchback competition. What will really please Business Owners, is that the new Honda Jazz is set to be the cheapest self-charging Hybrid in the UK on a business lease. Monthly costs can be as little as £155 (+VAT)*.
 Island User:
Honda knows its audience. The Jazz has always leaned towards comfort, rather than a firm sporty ride. It’s one of the reasons the Honda Jazz has been so popular with Island customers. The suspension does its job, perfectly absorbing the Island’s bumpy roads. The seats are supportive and but spacious taking the last jolt out of all but the biggest Island potholes.
Honda say the seats are as comfortable as those in a premium saloon, and the back seats retain Honda’s party piece; Honda Magic Seats – They fold flat or the front bunch can be lifted vertically for taller items. Or, for a more comfortable space for your four-legged house mates.
 Choices:
The Value Choice: Honda Jazz ‘SE’ 1.5 Hybrid Automatic
The Range Topper: Honda Jazz ‘EX Crosstar’ 1.5 Hybrid Automatic
Leslies Motors Favourite: Honda Jazz ‘EX’ 1.5 Hybrid Automatic
 Verdict:
The Honda Jazz was already a class-leader in so many ways. The clever engineers at Honda have taken what was popular about the previous Jazz, and made the biggest improvement they could. By choosing a hybrid power train, Honda not only pushes the new Jazz into a practically uncontested market, but it’s a significant saving on fuel. Also, thanks to the Hybrid system, it’s quicker from a standstill, which makes pulling out of junctions safer and the smooth automatic gearbox ensures the drive is supremely refined.
Once you compare this with the competition, you won’t want anything else.
 * [12 upfront payments over 48 months, with 6,000 miles per annum.]

how we’re doing
We're doing great, thanks for asking!
Tumblr media
First off, let’s talk about the baby. You guys! She's the best. She’s smart and plump and has the most radiant star smiles. At nearly three months old her accomplishments are pretty humble (cooing! rolling! eye contact!) but it's safe to say we think the world of this girl. When I catch myself longing for the next phase, where she can crawl or talk or be held my someone other than me, I just say to myself "this could be your last one." Those are pretty much the magic words as far as an attitude change. Babies don’t keep.

I'm not sure if it's her or me, but infant care feels easy this time. Everything else is a bit nuts, though. Our orbit around the city has shrunk significantly and my living room always looks something like this...

...but on the bright side I'm finally mastering the art of lower domestic expectations. Perfectionism dies hard, y’all. My energy level is actually pretty decent, but a couple times a week I do something really dumb like burn a hole in the kitchen counter or send an important package to the wrong address and those mistakes serve as painful reminders of the very real effects of sleep deprivation. The month after my family left, dinner felt so unachievable that we ate almost exclusively takeout and Trader Joe's frozen food. For some reason I always get crazy sugar cravings during the first few months of exclusive breastfeeding, and it can be so hard to strike a balance between self care and total lack of discipline. In January I started doing crossfit at Jason's gym, and it's been very life-giving to kiss the baby goodbye and break a sweat for an hour.
What else? This happened...

^Jumping because that's a new-to-us car! Some backstory: ten years ago, my dad made a deal with me. If I stayed in public school and saved him money on tuition, he'd buy me a car. The vehicle in question was a 2006 Honda Civic and way too cool to pass up. I drove that car all around town, and later shipped her out to WA state. When I got pregnant with V, we debated getting something bigger but ultimately decided to stick with my beloved Honda. Then, on my first trip to the grocery store with all three kids, the power steering went out. It turned out to be issues with the hybrid battery that are totally fixable but too inconvenient for our current situation. Simon wanted to replace the car with a snowmobile, but instead we found a great deal on a used Mazda 5 and drove down to Olympia to buy it. It's the miniest minivan on the US market- roomy enough that we can bring my sister along when we go the beach but compact enough that we can still parallel park in our urban neighborhood. I've never named a car before, but we're talking about calling this one Goldilocks since she's not too big and not too small, but juuuust right.
Sunday was our sixth wedding anniversary, and we celebrated very romantically by going over our annual budget and making shrinky dinks with the kids. ;-) We'll do some more extravagant celebrating next month in Mexico, but for now I'll just say this: I really, really love being married to Jason.

I could keep prattling on about how we are doing, but instead I'm gonna throw down a few months worth of Keil children photo spam, because this is my blog and it’s what I do here!
