James "Buffalo Jim" Barrier
Born on March 22, 1953, in Cleveland, Ohio, James “Buffalo Jim” Barrier fell in love with Las Vegas at a young age. According to Las Vegas Weekly, he first visited the city when he was nine years old and was so enchanted that he decided that he’d one day return. Barrier made his way back to Vegas in 1971, and he soon built a reputation for himself.
Starting in 1977, Barrier put his knowledge about automobile repair to use. He began fixing cars from his van, then he signed a 30-year lease at a shop on Industrial Road that he called Allstate Auto and Marine Electric. Along the way, the gregarious, well-built mechanic earned his nickname — Buffalo — after a drunk tourist from Texas quipped that he’d once had sex with a buffalo, and Barrier could very well be their love child.
But though Barrier made friends with almost everyone he met — Las Vegas Weekly reports that his funeral was attended by a full cast of Las Vegas characters — he also made a significant enemy in the 1980s.
Rick Rizzolo was the owner of Crazy Horse Too, a gentlemen’s club next to Barrier’s auto shop. Though Las Vegas Weekly claims that Barrier tried to befriend Rizzolo, a deep animosity soon bloomed between the two men. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Rizzolo wanted Barrier to leave so he could expand his club. Barrier wouldn’t budge.
Over the next two decades, Barrier and Rizzolo clashed. Barrier claimed in a 2002 lawsuit, as reported by Las Vegas Weekly, that he found used needles and condoms on his property, had his shop broken into, and sometimes came into work to find his customers’ cars vandalized or towed away.
“I was afraid to leave anything at my lot because of vandalism or them towing cars away,” Barrier said during a hearing, as reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “It was like being under siege.”
So, Buffalo Jim Barrier fought back. With the help of his friend, City Councilman Steve Miller, he launched a campaign of his own against Rizzolo, alleging that he’d witnessed drug use and beatings at Rizzolo’s club.
With Barrier’s help, the FBI and the IRS eventually found that Rizzolo hadn’t been paying his taxes. He was found guilty of tax evasion and sent to prison for a year in 2007. But though his main nemesis was behind bars, Barrier started to receive a number of threatening letters and phone calls.
He shared details about the threats with a number of Las Vegas journalists, including Las Vegas Weekly‘s Joshua Longobardy. On Friday, April 4, 2008, Barrier called Longobardy to discuss the situation.
“They’re gonna try to do it through a woman,” Barrier told Longobardy, when the journalist told him to be careful. “Or they’re gonna try to drug me.”
Two days later, Buffalo Jim Barrier was found dead at a Motel 6. Rick Rizzolo had been released from prison the day before. So what exactly happened to Barrier?
Las Vegas Weekly reports that Barrier left home around 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, and promised his daughter, Jerica, that he’d return soon. Surveillance footage at a nearby Motel 6 captured him checking in an hour later and conversing with the clerk, seemingly in good spirits.
On Sunday, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Jerica and her sister Elise were told that their father had died. The Las Vegas Sun reports that Barrier had been found face up in bed, with his pants around his ankles. The coroner later ascribed his death to cardiomyopathy — inflammation of the heart muscle — which had perhaps been brought on by cocaine use.
But not everyone bought that Buffalo Jim Barrier had died of natural causes.
“I believe it was a homicide,” his daughter Jennifer told the Las Vegas Review-Journal a few days after Barrier’s death. “It was a murder… from everything I’ve gathered, it looks to be a homicide.”
Many of Barrier’s friends agreed.
“Nothing is adding up here,” his lawyer and friend, Robert Lueck, told the Las Vegas Sun. “It makes no sense.”
And Barrier’s confidant Miller, with whom he battled Rizzolo, darkly referenced the death threats that Barrier had recently received.
“He was my closest friend,” Miller told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “He predicted his own death on the phone Saturday.”
To Buffalo Jim Barrier’s four daughters, there are a number of strange things about his death. Las Vegas Weekly reports that Jerica and Elise rushed to the motel after hearing that their father had died and found an unsettling scene.
There were two glasses of water on the counter — but their father exclusively drank bottled water. The room was clean — but Barrier was notoriously messy. The police had found his garage door opener — but Barrier always kept it in the car. And Barrier’s wallet was missing most of its cash and his ID.
Then, there was the matter of a woman named “Lisa.” The police found that Barrier had spent his last hours with Lisa, who claimed that she had left the room after Barrier had a seizure. But Barrier’s daughter, Jennifer, doesn’t buy it. She told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that Lisa had changed her story multiple times.
“She lied,” Jennifer said. “I asked why [the police] won’t make her take a lie detector test, and they said she would have to agree to it. The way this has been handled is really not fair.”
Who would have killed Barrier? To his family and friends, the obvious answer is Rizzolo, who had suspected mob ties. Barrier even joked about it, quipping that his greatest professional accomplishment was: “Being able to stay in business while being attacked by the mafia for 25 years.”
For now, the case into Buffalo Jim Barrier’s death seems to be closed. But Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries is set to take a second look at Barrier’s story, more than a decade after Las Vegas’ “Most Colorful Character” was found dead. The renewed attention is likely welcomed by his daughters, who still wonder what happened to their father.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do,” Jennifer Barrier told Las Vegas Weekly in 2008. “I can’t live without knowing what happened to my dad.”

“World’s largest” casino resort should it be so fortunate as to land one of the three forthcoming gaming licenses.
At a recent conference at Encore Boston Harbor in Massachusetts, Chris Gordon, who’s leading Wynn Resorts’ efforts in Japan, talked about the company’s vision for what’s expected to become the third- richest gaming market in the world behind Macau and Nevada.
“The government has set goals for the next 20 years to raise tourism to a very high level. We like that,” Gordon told The Japan Times. “It’s also a society that has had an interest in gaming. They certainly have gaming now, with pachinko, horses, and motorboats.”
Japanese lawmakers are finalizing the regulations that will govern the licensing process. The largest casino operators on the planet are expected to bid, including Las Vegas Sands, MGM Resorts, Wynn, Melco Resorts, and Galaxy Entertainment.
Massive Complex Gordon refused to put a price tag on the company’s potential Japan casino resort, but said it would likely feature a large amount of MICE space (meeting, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions).
“In Osaka, it would be between two million and three million square feet. That’s probably eight times the size of Encore Boston Harbor,” the executive revealed, adding that the goal is to build the “world’s largest” casino property.
Encore Boston Harbor cost $2.6 billion to construct. Wynn opened its integrated resort (IR) on the Macau Cotai Strip in 2016 at a cost of $4.2 billion.
This would be much larger than the investment in Cotai. But the reason we didn’t put an exact number on it is it’s very early, we still have a lot of design to do, a lot to learn,” Gordon added.
Wynn Resorts has previously told investors that it would likely be looking at an investment in the $8- to $9 billion range in Japan should it win the bidding war.
Osaka Preferred Japan’s decision to legalize commercial gaming – spearheaded by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his ruling Liberal Democratic Party – is to diversify the world’s third-largest economy into more of a tourism-focused nation.
However, gambling remains largely unpopular among the general public. As a result, only two major cities have expressed public support for the properties: Osaka and Yokohama.
MGM and Sands – considered the frontrunners for two of the licenses – are respectively focused on Osaka and Yokohama. Wynn is open to either city and the Tokyo capital, should it enter the pool.
“Osaka is the most active city,” Gordon said of the integrated resort jockeying. The second-largest metro area in Japan wants to have a casino resort open in time for its hosting of the 2025 World Expo.
Yokohama only threw in its candidacy recently, Mayor Fumiko Hayashi telling her citizens that it’s an opportunity the city can’t afford to miss.바카라사이트
“I’ve decided upon an IR bid due to my sense of crisis about Yokohama’s future,” she said this week. “It’s a big national project which could become a driving force for tourism and the regional economy in Yokohama.”

You take the good, with the bad.
So it looks like I’m going to get a slice of shit cake as a project in San Antonio. Some type of fire insurance casualty at a horse racing track. That’s pretty much all I know about it right now. But I’ll take it.
Also it looks like I’m going to be spending time in the lovely state of Pennsylvania this Autumn and possibly Winter. Grantville (outside of Harrisburg) and Washington (outside of Pittsburgh). How many burg(h)s are there? I wonder if Amy and Simone at the Bar Symon in PIT will remember me?
Later on this week I should get an invite to the OAC calls for those projects. I’m smiling because I’m going to be representing the O now and my old firm is going to be the A. Knives out.
The jury is still out on the Louisiana projects. Baton Rouge - Lake Charles - Shreveport is a big ol bad triangle.
Plus there might be a Starbucks in the property in Las Vegas at the end of this year into Q1 next year.
Plus there has been rumblings of a hotel room renovation here in Colorado. Not sure how many would be slated to renovated, but that property has 536 rooms. Yikes. That could take some time in 2022.

Serenity’s Phoenix Blood: How it Came to Be, and How it Works
Okay, so I definitely should’ve made this post a long time ago, but at the same time, depression and just life in general made things very hard for me to put it down in writing. But I did have the idea for a long time, so I can finally write about it.
It’s going to be long, so if you’d like to continue, just click below.
1. The Story Behind It
So Serenity’s family were immigrants, wayyy back when, before Light or Wily ever came to be. They moved from Scotland to try and find a better way of life in what was originally known as the US (because Wily changed all the historical records, so no one really knows why it was called that; it just was), and settled down in rural Las Vegas. It was initially her ancestor, Cathal, who had settled down to start a family by wooing one of the local women, Kimama; however, their attempts for a family were unsuccessful.
The land had always had some kind of magickal properties to it, and no one really questioned it. Water seemed to always flow in a clear manner; crops never wavered under the intense heat and droughts; it was attributed to the gods of the land that still ruled there. This was something that Kimama always told him, but he was one of the very few in the minority who didn’t quite believe what he was being told.
Until, one day, he stumbled upon a large portal - he was remiss to really call it anything else. It had all the properties of what his wife had described as a portal, with the wavering edges and the soft glow emanating from the center. He was about to approach and investigate, when a reddish-orange bird came out of the portal, almost as if launched from a weapon of some sort. It skid against the ground until it came to a halt a few paces from Cathal’s feet.
And then, like that, the portal just vanished. Almost as though it were a phantom.
Cathal had always been one to tend to animals - he was from a farmer’s family back in Scotland, and helped to tend to the animals in their small village - and wasted no time in carefully cradling the bird against his body to carry it back home. For a time, he wanted to keep it a secret from Kimama, but his specialty was really with cows and horses. So he reluctantly informed her about what he’d found, and she was all too willing to help.
With Kimama’s help, Cathal was able to tend to the bird’s wounds and slowly nurse it back to health. It was a process that took several long weeks, but at the end of the journey, the bird’s feathers had taken more of a hearty shine to them, almost appearing to be glowing with the light of the sun - even when it was overcast outside.
Cathal knew he couldn’t keep such a magnificent creature cooped up in his home, so once he was certain that the bird would be fine on its own, he took it back to where the portal had been, and set it down on a nearby rock.
As previously mentioned, Cathal hadn’t been a believer in the “old gods” protecting the land, or any of the other stories that Kimama had told him. But that quickly changed as the bird suddenly changed sizes and turned towards him. Cathal was stunned into stillness, completely overwhelmed by what he was seeing. It was almost as though he was standing before one of these gods himself, and he didn’t know what to do.
The bird leaned down towards him, and he could feel its hot breaths on his skin. But before he could reach out towards it, the creature pulled back, spread its wings, and took flight into the sky. Within seconds, Cathal had lost sight of it, despite the sky being clear of any clouds.
Several weeks later, Kimama discovered that she was pregnant, and later gave birth to a healthy young boy.
2. The Powers, and How They Work
Ever since Cathal and Kimama’s son, there has been a trend of the phoenix blood being passed down through the generations. The eldest child always receives the majority of the powers, which include, but are not limited to: regeneration; revival upon being bathed in flames; ability to withstand extremely hot temperatures; and some degree of mastery over fire. The more children born to the family, the less of the powers they receive, however all of them keep the power of revival.
So long as someone with the phoenix blood in them has a child, that power will always be passed down. However, it can be transferred through other means. One common way is via blood transfusions, with the donor being the one bearing the blood. The receiver will always gain the powers of regeneration and revival, however all of the other skills are lost to them.
Serenity is the first daughter born as the eldest in a long line of McFarlanes, which marks her as an extremely rare occurrence. The bulk of the traits have, until her, fallen upon the eldest son, as the firstborn was always male. Females aren’t uncommon from being born to McFarlanes, but it’s highly unlikely that they will ever be the firstborn.
And since Serenity has had children, they have also adopted her powers. Listed in order of their birth:
- Zoe is the eldest, and receives all the normal powers as it tradition; - Zeke is the second child, and receives all but two of the normal powers (since they are both still young, those powers are yet to be determined); and - Angelle is currently the youngest, and has the least amount of powers out of the three, having lost three of the powers.
Since both Maria (Iris) and Joseph (one of Serenity’s husbands) have received blood transfusions from Serenity, they both have the powers of regeneration and revival, but have lost all the other powers.
One way for those with the phoenix blood to bypass the complete regeneration at a similar age upon being bathed in fire, is to die of natural causes (old age being the most common). That way, when the body is cremated and remains are laid aside overnight, the ashes will reform as a completely new body with no memories of the past life. These memories can be unlocked through rigorous training and meditation, however it’s very uncommon for anyone with this blood to choose this route, as they have usually had a long and fulfilling life up to that point.
The question then becomes: how many people actually know about the phoenix blood, outside of those in the McFarlane family?
And the answer is... inconclusive. People know about phoenixes from “legends and myths,” sure. But no one really expects them to be real, since the rifts popping up constantly have only been a recent occurrence. So they simply think that it’s nothing more than a silly folktale to tell children when they can’t sleep at night.
And, for the clan’s sake, they aim to keep it that way for as long as they can. No one wants to deal with an eternally young Wily, no matter who it is.

Las Vegas Park Race Track, 1953
The track went bust after just 13 days of live racing in 1953, a failure of what was intended to marry the Las Vegas gambling and entertainment destination with the Thoroughbred racing boom. The site later became Las Vegas Country Club, Westgate, Regency Towers, and part of Las Vegas Convention Center.
Joe Smoot founded Las Vegas Park in ‘49, and acquired 750 acres from the estate of Leigh S. J. Hunt at $750/acre. The architects were Arthur Froehlich and Paul R. Williams. Construction began in summer of ‘50, and by the following year the business was bankrupt.
Smoot pleaded not guilty to a grand jury embezzlement indictment. In federal court, failing to produce receipts or canceled checks for $500,000 in missing money, he said: “You ever try to pay a politician with a check?”
Las Vegas Jockey Club, a new corporation headed by Lou Smith and Al Luke, emerged as the new owner and operator in early 1953. The park opened September 4, 1953. Their only season was married by faulty ticking and betting equipment. The stables were vacated in Oct. ‘53. Joe W. Brown bought the track following its second bankruptcy.

Las Vegas Turf Club was the second organization to use the track for horse racing. Their Dec. ‘54 season had poor attendance, as low as 400. Ten years later in ‘64 & 65, Las Vegas Park was used for the last time for Nevada Racing Association’s Thunderbird Downs. (The name Thunderbird Downs was also used for the half-mile track a short distance away at the Thunderbird Hotel.)
Throughout the 50s, the track – alternately known as Joe W. Brown Race Track – was also used for convention events and automobile racing: American Automobile Association Championship (‘54), NASCAR Grand National Championship (‘55), and the USAC Grand Prix (‘59). It was the race track seen in the movie “Viva Las Vegas.”
Part of the property was sold to Clark County in ‘57 for the construction of the Convention Center. Joe W. Brown’s estate sold the remaining property to National Equities Inc. in ‘65 for the creation of what became Las Vegas Country Club. National Equities sold some 60 acres to Kirk Kerkorian for The International Hotel; 20 acres to Clark County for an expansion of the Convention Center; the southeast section was saved for what would be come Regency Towers.

As mobile tumblr no longer likes to let people click page links ( 😒 ) we've decided to drop today's preview in a post for all our mobile users' viewing pleasures!
PERDITION, NV POPULATION 1,974
Sitting stubbornly in the southern tip of Nevada, Perdition is 111 miles north of Las Vegas in rocky, sparsely habited Lincoln County. It sits in a scorched valley between the South Pahroc Range and the Delamar Range. Big Rock Wilderness stands directly north, across highway 93, so from any point in town you can see the teeth of jagged desert mountain ranges jutting up from the horizon. Its population is a small and ever-shrinking 1,974. Despite the harsh surroundings, a variety of flora and fauna surround the small town, digging out life from the feet of the mountains. Mesquite, creosote, greasewood, yucca, and more than 30 varieties of cacti dot the landscape. Sheep, foxes, coyotes, bats, wild horses, owls, tortoises and reptiles are among the hundreds of species co-existing in the rugged landscape. Check your shoes before heading out the door: three different types of scorpions live in the deserts of Nevada. Emergency rooms are also frequented by those bitten by local snakes: sidewinders, the Great Basin rattler, the western diamondback, and kingsnakes are all venomous and common.
WEATHER & CLIMATE SOUTHWESTERN USA
Perdition enjoys highs from 100 degrees in the summer to as low as 50 degrees in the winter. On average, they get 159 days of sunshine year-round. It is a semi-arid climate with very little precipitation.
NEIGHBORHOODS & RESIDENCES
King’s Canyon Estates - Home to the ever-shrinking upper echelon of Perdition, patrolled by a security guard and watched by hawkish blue bloods out of gleaming windows. The lawns are unsettlingly green and the manses are polished and opulent. Rebel Creek - Perdition residents call this run-down, burnt-out neighborhood ‘the wrong side of the creek’. Populated by shotgun houses and a few poorly maintained trailers, Rebel Creek is where the down-and-out lurk. As more of the city falls on hard economic times, more residents find themselves washed up here. It’s not advised to walk through at night. Steptoe Terrace Apartments - Close to downtown, reasonably priced, utilitarian. Nothing fancy, not run down; lived-in. It’s a step up from Rebel Creek, at least. Sunridge Court - Middle class Perdition residents live here in their modest but well-built houses and small but pleasantly tended yards. It’s close to the schools, the small city library, and most of downtown proper. Alta Vista - ATLAS employees have brought an unusual white-collar wealth to Perdition, driving up property values and forcing some people out of their homes altogether. This new development sprung up shortly after the ATLAS compound’s arrival, built on land wrenched from the impoverished hands of ranchers and homeowners on the outskirts of Perdition. Eminent Domain and skyrocketing property taxes have left a small but not insignificant portion of residents relocating to Steptoe and Rebel Creek, unable to afford to rebuild and unwilling to move away from the town their families have called home for so many generations.
PERDITION PROPER & LOCAL BUSINESSES
City Hall - The administration building of local municipal government, like everything in Perdition, has seen better days. Not many folk in town are particulalry pleased with their mayor, but no one ever seems to run against him. Sheriff’s Department & Perdition Jailhouse - Sheriff’s office, a small dispatch office, and a few jail cells for penning any rowdy drunks from the Widowmaker. Red Rock Elementary School - Pre-k - grade 6 Perdition High School - Grades 7 - 12, home of the Fighting Mules! Pike’s Food & Drug - The only grocer & pharmacy in town, owned by the Pike family, six-generation Perdition locals. It’s a snapshot in time, especially the functioning-and-fully-stocked cigarette vending machine and the soda fountain that’s still in service. Golden Oasis Casino - With the promise of a major highway to connect Perdition to the rest of the world, eager investors saw dollar signs and poured piles of money into a brand new casino in 1952. When the highway development fell through and the money dried up, it decayed into what it is today: a place for locals to pull the creaky levers on old penny slots and ignore the indoor smoking ban. Silver Strike Diner - While its silvery accents and vinyl booths are dinged and sunbleached, the food is just as good as when the Silver Strike opened in 1950. Cheap, greasy, open 24/7. The jukebox hasn’t worked since 2002. The Widowmaker - This saloon, built in 1902 and originally named The Silver Dollar Saloon, stands right on the edge of Rebel Creek and decent society. It’s an utter dive: dark, dingy, cheap, and rowdy. Look out for bar fights and pickpockets. Sandman Motel - Its peeling-paint neon sign can be seen from the highway, a symbol of bygone days (and missing the ‘T’ on one side). You have to be pretty desperate to stay here; all-sorts roll in off the highway to rent out these rooms. Last Chance Gas - Local gas station open 24/7 selling cold beer, cigarettes, essentials, and lotto tickets. It’s the ‘last chance for gas’ for the next 100 miles down America’s Loneliest Highway.
OUTER PERDITION & SURROUNDING WILDERNESS
Professor Chromium’s Monster Museum & Creature Feature! - Just off Highway 50! Come, be amazed! Mysterious creatures great and small from the world over; creatures as you’ve never seen! In the time-honored tradition of now-defunct circus freak shows, Professor Chromium’s Monster Museum is a sprawling old warehouse made into a maze of clever taxidermy, creative Frankensteining of stuffed creatures, jars of mysterious claws and limbs. Locals serve as tour guides for tourists and cashiers at the wildly overpriced gift shop stuffed with kitschy souvenirs. Some even say a few of the creatures are genuine horrors, but who would believe them? Perot Mine - There’s a saying around town, and it’s ‘all the money in Perdition comes from Perot’. The mine opened for operation in 1902 when prospectors were hunting for new veins as the mine in Delamar had been providing dwindling returns for a few years before the fire ravaged the town in 1900. William Perot founded the mine and the town of Perdition sprung up nearby. All of high society in Perdition is related to, or married to, a Perot. It employs a huge portion of the Perdition population, but its returns are now dwindling, too. Quarter after quarter, less and less gold and silver ore has been hauled out of Perot. There are whispers of lay-offs on the horizon and even the upper crust of Perdition is starting to get nervous. Perdition Uranium Mine & Mill - from 1951 to 1968, a uranium mining boom swept across America. Spurred by the Atomic Energy Commission and the Cold War, Nevada was a focal point for substantial uranium prospecting and mining. Just outside Perdition, a uranium mine and mill cropped up, employing hundreds of locals and bringing an additional economic boom to the small town in addition to the long-standing gold mine. It was shuttered in 1972, boarded up, and now stands as an ugly relic littered with radioactive warning signs all along the perimeter. Curious teenagers have gone missing inside, and sometimes strange noises can be heard across the flat desert from within its neglected depths. The ATLAS Compound - In 2015, after a flurry of federally funded construction activity behind high chain link fence, a collection of bureaucratic government buildings cropped up like a deposit of hard, shiny minerals along the horizon just outside of town, near the old Perdition Uranium Mine and Milling site. Its perimeter is gated and the gatehouse is always manned by armed guards. This government compound includes a huge lab, offices, and a medical wing. Officially, it is designated as an arm of the Department of the Interior. Delamar - A ghost town dubbed ‘The Widow-maker’ due to deadly dry milling techniques that killed dozens and dozens of the men who worked at the Delamar mine. Established in 1891, the mine operated lucratively until 1900 when nearly the entire city burned to the ground. After a difficult recovery, the mine closed in 1909 and by 1914 the town was abandoned. Nothing but the skeleton of old buildings and lingering ghosts remain in Delamar. Big Rock Wilderness - Fully encompassing the southernmost portion of the South Pahroc Range, this gorgeous national park includes steep and jagged mountains, canyons and an expansive field of large, jumbled boulders loved by rock climbers all over the state. Recreational opportunities include climbing, camping, hiking, horseback riding and hunting.
