Day 9 : The Gulaal - Jaiselmer
17th March 2023
Last night we had drinks in the garden of the Hotel which then evolved into a delicious meal, enveloped by a warm breeze, a very slight smattering of rain and courteous and attentive service.
This morning I decided I needed to exercise before embarking on our long journey to Jaiselmer, so I got up early and with Dave in tow decided to go to the gym. Unfortunately the rain had made the outside steps quite slippery and over I went, cracking my left knee on the hard stone. It was extremely painful and my knee is twice it’s size. However I still managed 20 minutes of punches and kicks before breakfast.
Before we finally left Bikaner, our guide wanted us to visit the ornately decorated Jain Temple of Bhandasar. This Temple is unique because, instead of water, 40,000 kg of clarified butter ( ghee ) was used to mix the cement in its construction.
I tiptoed around it in bare feet, not liking the sensation of grit and dirt on the bottom of my soles and the moment I got back into the van, I scrubbed them both with antiseptic wipes.
The journey to Jaiselmer was about 5 hours long and as we got closer to the Pakistan border, the green of the countryside became desert and the towns were replaced by army bases.
So we entered the “ Golden City “ which at first glance wasn’t very impressive, it was even less impressive as we turned into a very dusty, narrow, rubble filled lane, the further we went along it, the worse it became with half constructed houses, no pavement and desert sand for tarmac. At last, Jagdish took a right turn through the gates of The Gulaal and what a transformation. This hotel is truly an oasis in the middle of turmoil, a Phoenix from the ashes of poverty, its walls dazzling in the late afternoon sunshine.
We were met by out tour rep who quickly got us checked in and then Babu showed us around this hotel of just 8 rooms.
Unfortunately The Gulaal doesn’t have an alcohol license, so first things first, Mr Babu was dispatched with 5000R to buy us the necessities that are required of any good holiday.  Babu soon came back with 2 bottles of Chardonnay and 6 bottles of beer, I honestly didn’t expect any change from him, but once we were in our room, bless him, Babu gave me 1400R back and insisted on counting it out to me.
So as the sun goes down we shall go up to the rooftop for dinner and watch the lights of Jaiselmer twinkle beneath us .
