Decided to redraw a moment from On the Getaway Mile by Odaigahara on AO3/ @droidofmay !

This may have taken a ridiculous amount of hours condensed into a few days and I went through it drawing cars and car interiors, but this was an absolute blast to do :D I hope I've done the fic sort of justice.

Welcome to my secret lair!!

I spent roughly... 18 hours working on this, the majority during this week and over the past three days, so I need to share my toils with people <3

Character/car references and page thumbnails! Featuring an incorrect scene placement and bad camera position. I reread the scene and placed it properly in the actual page. I hate drawing cars!! I was actually the most worried about panel placement when I started this— I was a guy who only did non narrative/illustrative panel pages and layout-less comics, but it wasn't that bad with a script! I could separate beats into panels, note which panels should be emphasised/larger, and assembled that into a page.

If you compare the fic with this comic, you can see how much dialogue I edited and moments I cut out. I couldn't fit it all on without having to draw even more pages, I wish I could though! Poor Mumbo only gets one line here. I'm so sorry my darling man <3 I also gave him a slight cyborg design because his implants are really important for his character and I needed some way to visually show that, even if it's not canon/mentioned.

The colouring method for this was really fun! It's similar to my aggie rainbow painting method but with less steps, hence narrow value range. It looks pretty and gets the vibe across well though.

Mumbo is sitting on the wrong side and should have his seatbelt on. He's also not carrying the stolen laptop as described.

It's explicitly noted that Mumbo cannot scan Grian like he can with Scar. Whoops!

Transmissions from the Foundation are via Mumbo and Scar's implants, but I couldn't think of a good way to portray that.

Despite guns and weapons being mentioned, I somehow didn't get the opportunity to draw a single one.

I love hand lettering. I also hate it! I will continue to do it.

so, first, accountability statement: I plan on trying to finish the “zedaph steals a baby” fic by the end of the month and god is that one-line summary no longer accurate but we’re sticking to it, said here publicly so now I have to do it. obviously I also have recursive exchange and the writing I have for hotguy comics zine, but I am not SUPER worried about either of those time/inspiration-wise at the moment and also for Reasons I know it won’t be long until I have more free writing time after that, SO.

various items that are on my potential writing docket, I am curious which of these appeal most:

I dust off the supervillain support group au. two ways this could go: I chip away at the second arc of my original outline and acknowledge this will be like a 300k fic I’m not ready to feel “done” with or “ready to post” with for ages, or I re-work it into something a little more doable and less ambitious keeping the same premise (ren runs a support group for supervillains, doc pov as he starts to heal and redeem himself). this MAY honestly be a target for “if I don’t hate the first 50k on re-reading it and I can actually make my brain write the second arc, do a slower release schedule and then start releasing chapters before I’m done writing”? but this ALSO runs the risk of “I stopped writing it, which is often a sign I was having trouble writing it”.

pearl monster au, which has been cooking in my head for a long while. the basic premise is “one day, pearl, with no memory of how or why this happened, wakes up in a facility as a monster and must try to figure out how she got there, escape, and find her way home, even knowing she may be irrevocably changed”. now with bonus season 10 fish flavor to add to this creature design I’ve been iterating on in my head for forever! this one is ALSO an experiment for me in “can I write a fic where I can’t write dialogue for basically the entire first act”, which would be interesting to see from me, you know?

the related “bigb folklore au”, where after secret life bigb is woken up by Cat and Dog by the tracks of the King Snake, which bigb can recognize as the railroad track, and decides to journey down the railroad to see if he can figure out what the fuck is going on. I need to do video review of life series bigb for this one. this is my excuse to get Weird and Metaphorical and also assign everyone to various animals for no reason, along with using some very specific aesthetic I have wanted to use for some worldbuilding but hadn’t gotten around to yet in any of my stuff. man walks through the desert with animal, confronts train that might be the watchers, might be death, and might just be a train. also, realizes that “confront” is the operative word there and has to deal with that. you know how it is.

““office au””, in air quotes because it’s not REALLY what anyone going to an office au is looking for so much as an excuse to write weird horror. iskall, normal-ish software developer man in a boring office job who does game jams in his free time, goes to work one day to work in his boring downtown office on a payment system for a client. and then things, uh, Take A Turn. this would be a LITTLE me going “what if I wrote an au with a guy who works in tech but like, the boring side of tech I’m in. like, banks and consulting and manufacturing and shit. where you sit in meetings all day and tweak java 8 code even though that language is ten years out of date. but THEN. something exciting happens in the worst way possible.” I’m doing to iskall what I did to mumbo stuffed bird is what I’m saying. it’d be fun.

the latch batch of pre-orders are packed and i'm bringing them to the post office tomorrow!

i'll probably put leftover stock up in a few weeks? i'm a little worried i might've missed a charm or two in an order because my cat (love of my life. bane of my existence) decided to have play time in my pre-prepped packages and i came back to the crime scene of her having literally pulled a bunch of charms out of the packages in their little baggies, i guess she really liked them! but it meant that! i had a mess of unsorted charms that had already been packaged!

and after i packed everything back up i had (1) singular ranchers charm that didn't find a home that i Should Not Have. so someone is probably missing a rancher.

so i'll wait a tad for people to get their packages and if you happen to be missing any items feel free to reach out and e-mail me or use my shop's contact page, or dm me on tumblr i swear im friendly and do not bite.

i don't have a TON of leftover stock but i'm also not sure if i'll sell out again as quickly as last time? but either way if you do want to secure a lovely little charm and didn't before, it'll probably be around the 14th of april that i put the leftovers up.

i'll make an announcement on my socials reminding, and also i'll send an e-mail on my newsletter!

i do have more merch ideas and stuff i want to do in the future but after the leftovers i'm gonna take a step back for a few months and dig my teeth back into animating because a) i miss it and b) if i don't finish slow motion this year i will stop drawing for the rest of my life and c) the shop's been very time consuming and i need a bit of a break from it.

Hello! Do you have any plans after this event is over?

Hello!!! Thanks for the ask!!!

We do have some plans!! We will be working to organize this blog as a nice, accessible way to see what everyone made (making sure everything is tagged consistently, updating any of the promotional posts with anyone or anything we missed, making a masterpost, etc) so that this years event can be stored in a quick easy place. We are also hoping to do a final stats of the number of words and art pieces that people created in this event, stuff like that!

For people who participated in this years event, we're going to keep the Discord server up, though we will be reorganizing it to be a more functional social space rather than more of a creative space. Unfortunately, we have made the decision to keep this server limited to only people who participated, so invites will not be opened to the public. We may also have some changes in leadership for any mods who wish to step down and for any new Discord mods we may want to add to maintain the server.

Some of our mods are going on to run and participate other projects in the fandom! You'll see some familiar faces in the MCYT Co-Create Event, the HotGuy Comics Zine, and the Hermitzine!

There were a number of ideas for future events thrown around (like a hermitshipping podficcing event, fan music event, etc) by participants and mods alike, though there are no solid plans for any of those currently.

We had an amazing time running this event and we hope to do it again in the future! It's unlikely there will be a Hermitshipping Big Bang 2024 (at least, not one run by us 👀) but we're already discussing the possibility of a Hermitshipping REVERSE Big Bang 2025!! 👀👀

FAQs

As the first few application responses go out (although only about half have been responded to, so don't worry if you haven't received one yet), there have been lots of questions from contributors, most of which appear several times, so the answers and any other possible questions have been compiled here for your benefit.

READERS:

When will the zine be published? The zine will be published at some point between the middle of April to the start of May, depending on how prompt contributions are.

I missed the deadline! Can I still help? While the last few application responses are going out, you could definitely still submit an application, especially if it's just within the next few days. Otherwise, general support towards the zine and participants will be enough, and there will definitely be future zines that you can sign up to on this blog. In the meantime, the Traffic Zine, Hermit Zine, Hermitcraft Season Zine and HotGuy Comics Zine (none of which are affiliated with this zine!) are all very cool projects with a similar focus.

CONTRIBUTERS:

What size, aspect ratio and general format should my (art) contribution be? Your contribution should be RGB (rather than CMYK) and the aspect ratio will be A4 proportions, so 2480 x 3508 (aspect ratio, not pixel count). Preferably files should be in a JPEG or PNG format, but other formats should work.

How long should my (writing) contribution be? About 3k to 5k, but this is more of a rough guideline and is very flexible.

How will I submit my finished contribution? A google form will be created to submit your contribution(s) closer to the time, but you may wish to show your progress via a link in DMs for check-ins.

What are check-ins? Check-ins are a way to make sure everything is running smoothly and on track, and dispel any problems that may have occurred. There will be two within the creative time period of this zine, one on the 24th of February and one on the 16th of March.

What content isn't allowed? Completely banned content for the zine includes: anything NSFW, anything graphically gory (although a bit of blood is fine given the nature of Secret Life) and anything that violates Gem’s boundaries. As for shipping, while implied is technically allow it (as long as it is between characters, not creators, and as long as it is within Gem’s boundaries) background relationships would probably best at most.

When is the deadline to submit my contribution? The current planned deadline is the 6th of April, but this can be extended if need be.

What counts as ‘Miscellaneous’? Miscellaneous just means anything that wouldn’t go into the category of the named SMPs (which are Hermitcraft Season 9 and 10, Secret Life and Empires SMP Season 1 and 2), so could include content: from stand-alone videos; from Gem’s skyblock series; from Gem’s hardcore series; from SMPs that aren’t named (like Afterlife SMP, Hermitcraft Season 8, New Life, X Life, etc.; from her Stardew Valley streams; from her times playing MCC; or just generally about her character.

Hello sun anon!!!! :D omg you got the blackberries, IM SO HAPPY YOU LIKE THEM!!!!!! :DDDD and blackberry jam is fr one of the BEST things imo, you can use it on sandwiches, or donuts which is SUCH a good idea omg????? It makes for amazing filling. I tend to eat it on crackers with a nutty-flavoured cheese, so thats an option too!!! Its also very delicious in desserts-- people up here make blackberry cheesecake ALL the time its like a staple recipe SKDNWKDNWDNSN so you could do smth like that!!!!! Or petits fours (and this is the part where i display my rabid love for french food akdhakfhekdjwjdj) which are DELICIOUS. Either way the possibilities are endless >:]

Im doing well!!! My partner is currently visiting home so its just me and our roommates, and we just came out the other side of an ice storm that knocked our internet out for a full 24 hrs 😭😭😭😭😭 (we kept power, although it did flicker a bit). luckily tho ive got unlimited data on my phone and im extremely mobile-pilled, so this changed basically.... nothing for me PFFFTTTTT

Ive been very excitedly running the HOTGUY COMICS Zine, which has been an absolute treat, and now im also working on a fun group project with some other chronic zine mods that i cant wait to get started on!!!! And then ofc, the hunger au pre-canon oneshot-- im halfway finished with edits, and its already at 2k fjsnfjdnfjdn. Since im still working on the next chapter proper, i wanted to give yall something to chew on in the meantime!!! (And also ive been wanting to write hunger au oneshots since i first started taking the project more seriously, so this is just one fic in a series of snapshots i cant wait to make!!!!)

Im hoping to work more on that today :] cant make any promises, but i was REALLY happy with how everything turned out last night, so i wanna keep that momentum going if i can

INTERVIEWER: So, Mr. Goodtimes... what exactly would you say is your greatest strength, in this wonderful world of vigilantes?

HOTGUY: Why, thank you for the question, [REDACTED]! Y'know, I'm just soaring through it all, just flying high above the clouds, breezing through foes, out-foxing the TCG— not that that's hard; they've got pretty bad equipment for an organization that's supposed to be government funded. Well, I guess that goes to show what happens when you try to interrupt the incredible Hotguy while he saves the citizens of sweet, sweet Hermitopia, right?

INTERVIEWER: Hm... that's a pretty surprising answer, Hotguy. And here I thought flyin' around was more your sidekick's job, not yours.

HOTGUY: What? Oh, oh! Well, you know Cuteguy, he's got— well, sure, he's the one that actually flies us around... sort of, at least. But me, though— well, [REDACTED], I guess you could say I'm more of a looker.

INTERVIEWER: ... I see. So are your dazzling good looks stunning the villains then?

HOTGUY: Well of course, we all know I'm the handsomest man around! Just look at this face! Cutting edge cheeks, I tell you, cutting edge. But no, actually, what I mean is— well, I'm an archer, so you've gotta see well, right? And me? I see loads. Just about everything there is to see, I'd imagine. Nothing can escape these ol' sharp eyes for long!

INTERVIEWER: I guess you could call it 20/20 vision then, ay?

HOTGUY: I'd call it more than that; 20/50, or— 50/20— oh, no, wait that's not— look, I don't do math, [REDACTED], numbers are just— ooh, they're tricky little things, aren't they? But ever since that water supply got contaminated, I've been seeing more and more, further and further, in way more detail. You ever seen a pigeon poop from three miles away?

INTERVIEWER: Can't say I have.

HOTGUY: I wouldn't recommend it.
